2018, I started this adventure of building a house in Lagos, Nigeria in preparation for what I deemed my move back to Nigeria after almost 40yrs in the US. I initially wanted to have my cousin who is an Engineer build it for me, as a matter of fact he started it, and did a good job, but I sensed somewhere down the line if I wanted to save our relationship, I needed to take it from him. As hard as that decision was, it was the best, we can remain family and not be enemies. Even though at the time I could tell he didn't like it. Things were not going the way I wanted and I wanted to have more of a say so. Anyway, I wanted to document some things here as we are at the finishing stage now.

I mostly dealt with people outside of NL, and the experience has been interesting. Folks in Nigeria, are mostly dubious to say the least, and that is very sad to say. Frist thing they see because you live outside Nigeria is they can take advantage of you, like you don't have a brain, you are some kind of maga!

I have dealt with some people on NL, some have been very positive and some not so much. I have an enormous amount of respect for some professional on NL, some I go to there site and copy ideas and learn, believe me, I have learnt a lot since I started! Thanks to ROTECCH77, SPYDER880 (Who doesn't love Spyder?) I learnt a lot from both. Below are some of the folks I have dealt with on NL:

Topsy23 - he supplied all the wires for the house, million of naira worth, he never saw my face once and NEVER was integrity in question! I trust this guy with my money!!
ThatHistoryGuy - supplied toiletries. - Really good guy.
Adedward-hmm- jury is still out, more updates to come.

I am also hoping to work with Gbadexy for the painting, soon!

I will be post pictures of the project and say little things here and there.

its amazing, our taste is so similar with certain things, we must be around the same age. I really like what you have done here. I must visit this your mansion next time I am in naija o!! maybe we can talk off line.

From your complaints, it's obvious that he used inferior materials to do the job and that's why it started falling apart quite early.

See eh, after your numerous experience with artisans and people, I admire your resolve in still trusting people. You're a good person and I will encourage you to keep being good. at $40,000, they'll see it on the internet and expect you to replicate with Nigeria price.

My Brother, I think you are missing the point, you are good at what you do and everyone here knows that. But taking up for every Nigerian Artisan is a tall order! Not everyone is as diligent as you or take pride in what they do. Many will cheat you or cheat themselves by offering a bad product. Because many of us live outside Nigeria, we have a certain standard we are use to, and many are willing to pay for it. But the quality must be top notch. Please do not take it as an attack on you or defend anyone but yourself and your work.

I must say I am enjoying this conversations more than the whole NExt saga, both views are eye opening into what people think and how we are.

The fundamental question to ask is “why are we Nigerians so dishonest “ and pls. don’t give the answer because of poverty, there are many poor people who have integrity, but WE! I live in the part of the world where the moment you say you are Nigerian, people pack their bags, it is such a shame! If each ONE OF US can begin to deal with each other honestly, just begin from there, the narrative would begin to get better. I joined this forum to learn about building, and yes, I have learned a lot from here, even dealt with some contractors here. But the forum has become a den of thieves to catch unsuspecting victims. It is VERY DISCOURAGING! WE CAN DO BETTER!
