If China does not spare a passing thought when it comes to ruthlessly executing their own citizens for drug crimes, what makes anyone think they will show mercy to a foreigner?

In either case, I don't see how being bipolar should be reason enough absolve him. The west plays the "mental illness" card way to often and people are not made to take responsiblity for their actions.

There is something to be said against keeping your powder dry in the NFL. Thinking you can simply switch it on at will hasnt worked for most teams in the past.

@Thread, saw Avatar and loved every single computer generated image, from the blades of blueish-green light-up on contact grass to the top of the floating mountains. Though the script wasn't particularly novel (hello Pocahontas?) the delivery by the cast was superb. They managed to very successfully re-invent this wheel and connect with the audience. Very well done movie, not much to criticize at all.

Christianity EtcRe: How Do I Come To Know What God's Plan For My Life Is? by JeSoul(f): 9:25pm On Dec 28, 2009
VeriLee:
Hello JeSoul,

Thank you for sticking with me. This is the mark of a true friend. As you can see, I am going through some rather difficult emotional and spiritual turmoil and over the last few months it has affected my relationships with my family and friends and others. It has even affect my productivity at work because I seem to have lost my usual easy-going and happy attitude at work, because this is such a weight on my mind. The decision I have taken is not an easy one and I am sure that this would further disturb my relationships with my community.
My brother the pleasure is mine smiley. If I can help in any small way then I thank God.

I get devotionals from a particular pastor and in one of his recent episodes he spoke about how he lost his faith for a period of years in his life while he was an evangelist, infact he questioned everything from the bible to whether God truly exists. He spoke of how he began searching again and how he was lost and church leadership could not give him any answers. He was spent and could not function properly at his 'christian duties'. At the time he worked a construction job with a man who wasn't christian but was spiritual and they would have many conversations about God and life. Through these seemingly casual day to day exchanges, his faith in God (not in 'church') was built back up.

I guess what I'm trying to say my brother is that having a crisis of faith is not necessarily a bad thing.

It is through these trying times that you figure out what it is you truly believe and why you believe it and this is a good thing. Many men of faith throughout history have gone thru crises of faith and come out praising God for it. Just take it easy and one day at a time, not allowing it to consume you for the worse.

Unfortunately, I had to come to this decision because I felt I was getting far too many mixed messages from people I had very high regard for. I also felt that these people had been touched individually by God, so it came as a big surprise that there was no uniformity in their advice. It has felt a big question in my mind, namely; what is the point of God having ministers, pastors on earth if God cannot use these people to touch the lives of his children? Yes - I understand these are people, but I was given to understand that these ministers and pastors are people who God had specifically chosen to serve him. Is this now not true? If you pastor said to you that he has received a message from God, you you believe him or not?
Honestly, I do not accpet 'messages' from any pastor. If it were a very very close friend that I've known and trusted for years and would not hesitate to place my life in his/her hands - it would be different. And even then, I wouldn't "accept" the message, I would listen to it and then test it, wait it out to see if it was true or a lie.

What I'm saying is while God has put Pastors in positions of leadership in the church, it is important for you and everyone else reading to know that:
-pastors do not have any more access to God than others
-they are no more spiritual than others
-they do not hear from God more than others
-they are not "chosen" by God anymore than you and I
-they are no more special or holy or annointed than you or I
-pastors are not meant to be messengers or mediators between man and God, this is Jesus' job
-they are not meant to "touch our lives" and give us direction - this is the Holy Spirit's job

So many have been hurt by the prevailing sentiment that pastors are "men of God" and speak the word of God and they should be listened to and trusted at all times. But the bible never teaches that! not once. The bible teaches to test everything, test everyone who claims to be of God and from God. Even a pastor who is genuine can make mistakes sometimes, which is why you can never take hook line and sinker what anyone says. Even what I'm saying, how would you know if I were lying to you? you must search out these answers from the scriptures yourself. I'm afraid the trust you have had in them has been sorely misplaced my brother. Strip yourself immediately of the lie that "God has chosen and sent pastors". This is a teaching of men, please go and search out what the bible teaches is the duty of pastors.

and I daresay, in these dark times that any pastor or 'prophet' who goes around claiming to have heard from God or to speak for God is a false prophet. God speaks directly to us, this is why we have the Holy Spirit.

You say above that ultimately, everything rests on faith. I see you point, but this is not what constitute my biggest problem. I have taken on faith that God had a plan for me, that his ministers on earth were chosen by him, that he could reveal his plan to me, etc, etc. Should I carry on hold to these views on faith? How do I know Christianity is true? Should I just believe it is true on faith? Well, that would make it no difference from someone who believed on faith that Islam or Buddhism are true?
Those questions are all loaded my brother, lol and I will not falsely claim to have all the answers. Some answers no one can tell you, you will have to figure out for yourself.

were you taking those sayings of "God has a plan for your life" on faith . . . why? because a 'man of God' said it? or because the bible said so? and does the bible really say so? see the difference?

I believe christianity to be true because I first believed it by faith, then I saw the evidence of my faith in God's working in my life, the changes that followed, the urging and presence of the Holy Spirit, the transforming of my heart, the unmistakable touch of God that resonates within my spirit everyday and in the face of great opposition and 'rational evidence' to the contrary that still Jesus is Lord, His death was to save me from sin and that Calvary is a mystery I will ever barely be able comprehend talkless of expressing it properly to others.

My brother, I will not be so bold as to ever tell you or anyone what to believe, but I will declare day and night that I know beyond all doubt that Jesus is Lord and that God rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

You said above that you once had to make a difficult decision, so I am sure you appreciate my position. I had been in this state of indecision for many many months and it got to a point where I thought I was going crazy. So my decision to pull out of my community for some time will allow me time to think and reflect and bring some sanity back into my life. You said you had some help from the Holy Spirit - Please, can you advise how the Holy Spirit helped and how did you recognise that it was the Holy Spirit and not some other entity?

Many thanks.
At the very core, my predicament was not all that different from yours. What did I do? I spents months and months praying, 'fasted' once a week, and soberly considered the long and short term consequences and ramifications my decision would have on me and those close to me for the rest of my life. I asked the opinions of a few friends I trusted (no pastors). Like I said they gave me differing opinions BUT they did not claim to be speaking for God - this is very important.

After many many months and many tears, I made a decision. I felt so alone, no shoulder to lean on but mine, no one to hold my hand and promise me it would be okay. No one but me. But my brother I tell you, through it all, I felt an overwhelming sense of God's peace about what I chose, infact it blanketed me and became my assurance and it taught me to lean on no one but God and His word.
See Phil 4 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
This verse could not have been more evident and truer in my life during that time. Which is why I will say again, I believe in Jesus and the bible because I have seen the words jump off those pages and become real and true in my life. And even when God doesn't answer some of my prayers, the incredible things God has done in the past is where I draw inspiration and strength from to keep pressing on and believing.

I will stop rambling now . . . I feel your honesty and sincerity and I really hope you find the truth and that it arrests your soul and holds you captive forever. Godbless my brother smiley

Christianity EtcRe: The Evolution Myth And The ‘God Question' by JeSoul(f): 4:49pm On Dec 28, 2009
Jesoul, thanks for the compliments and i really appreciate your insight. I think i somewhat agree with your views (though not completely). The main problem with evolutionists is their desperate attempt to exclude God thereby spinning the theory into an unscientific myth rather than logical science. I really have no problem with mechanisms like natural selection cos it is proven science inside and outside the laboratory and like you said Dog will always remain dog no matter how refined they may get. I do not believe that evolution can create new species in the true sense. The limits that can be achieved by evolution is just permutations within a gene pool and thus variation rather than speciation. Evolutionist have attempted to decieve us by extraploting such variation (for which there is abundant evidence) to speciation.
You could not have said that any better, that is absolutely true. And you're right they've tried to draw conclusions on very shaky and flawed premises.

To me personally and as a researcher myself, good science is leaving the door open to all possibilities, seen or unseen, observed or yet-to-be observed, and definitively dimissing the possibility of an intelligent creator is simply foolishness. Anyone with such a subscription is simply allowing his/her anti-religious bias to cloud the issue and are therefore not true scientists in the purest definition of the word.

I think Justcool's entire response is just brilliant!

justcool:
I completely agree with you about the flaws in the theory of evolution. Real scientists do not deny these flaws, neither do they claim that the theory of evolution, as we have it today, has been proven. But this does not mean that the whole idea of evolution is a myth. Evolution is a reality only that scientists have not yet figured-out exactly how it happened. The major problem, like you pointed out, is that evolution is not a repeatable experiment. We cannot repeat the process in a lab and observe exactly how it happened.

But the people that do most damage to the theory are the anti-God enthusiasts. These are pseudo scientists and people feed up with religion; they use theory of evolution as a weapon against the belief in the existence of God. Hardly did science give birth to evolution did these zealots snatch it and waive it threateningly against the believers as a weapon. If these zealots had waited and at-least understood the basic things about science, they would have realized that science and evolution is not about whether there is a God or not. Science deals strictly with the physical, God is non-physical; thus God is beyond the realm of science. Science can never prove that God exists, neither can science ever prove that God does not exist.

Very harmful are also the religious zealots and fanatics who, starved of all spirituality try to offer the bible or other scriptures as scientific facts. The bible and other scriptures are spiritual books that should not be compared with science books. The bible and religious books should not be taken literarily. Once this is understood then the battle between the religious fanatics and science enthusiasts will cease. Creationism does not oppose evolution; neither does evolution oppose creationism and God. They simply approach the matter from different perspectives.

My perception is that evolution is the physical or biological process through which creatures (including man) were created on earth. Or the rather the physical or biological process through which creatures’ physical bodies were created. Although science is not yet very sure of how exactly evolution happened, but overtime and with serious researches they will someday fathom or decipher how it exactly happened. The theory, the way it is today still is not foolproof.

I think that the major problem that evolutionist have is that they don't realize that evolution was guided and did not just happen by chance. People ask questions like, “Despite all the mutations, why hasn't bacteria evolved into something else?” If one understand that evolution was guided then such questions automatically disappears. Animals (including bacteria), plants and etc on earth today are end products or fruits of a process, not necessarily a stage in a process. Thus the creature dog as we have it today is not just a stage in the journey of evolution but rather an end point or a destination.  With this knowledge one ceases to expect man to evolve in to a different creature in the future. Man is an end product, the fruit of the journey of evolution; the next phase of man’s evolution is maintenance and refinement of man but never a continued evolution towards a different creature or a new creature.

If most scientists understand this, I believe this will greatly help in their understanding of evolution. Some scientists, in the face of discoveries, have arrived at the conclusion that evolution might have been guided.

I believe that evolution was guided by the will of God. The prototypes of the creatures on earth today, already exist in higher planes (Supra-earthly planes). Evolution was guided to achieve physical replicas of these supra-earthly prototypes; and once a replica is achieved, evolution of that creature continues to refine it and maintain it as that creature is, but never a continued evolution into a new creature. I.e., in millions of years to come, dogs will remain dogs; they would not have evolved into a different creature, rather they may be more refined but they will forever (as long as the earth exist) remain dogs. So will man, lion and etc, because these creatures are nothing but physical replicas of creatures that existed in higher planes even before the physical universe came into being.
Justcool this is fantastic! simply fantastic response! by far the most well reasoned and well written comeback I've read on NL on the subject. I could not agree more and I pray every creationist and evolutionist and those in the middle read the above, ponder and digest. My favorite quote from the above is this:
Creationism does not oppose evolution; neither does evolution oppose creationism and God. They simply approach the matter from different perspectives.
@the Seeker and Justcool - many many kudos, you're brilliant fellas.

Christianity EtcRe: How Do I Come To Know What God's Plan For My Life Is? by JeSoul(f): 4:27pm On Dec 28, 2009
VeriLee:
2) Advice from Friends, Family, Pastors and Strangers. As Christian, nearly all the people around me are also God-fearing Christians and they are highly respected in the community. These people are approach by the community for all manner of problems and their wisdom is generally accepted and adopted by seekers. But in my case I had many different advice from all these people:

i) I had respected Christians friends and Pastors who said God hand a definite plan for me and that all I need do was pray had for God to reveal that to me.
ii) I had other respected Christian who said there was a plan but God cannot reveal it to me.
iii) I had advice that there was no plan at all and that I make up the plan minute by minute as I go along in life, but that I should ask God for guidance as I make these plans.
etc, etc, etc.

Basically, I have received so many conflicting and contradictory messages I have decided to no longer seek advice from these people. I have no lost all confidence about the source of these people's knowledge and wisdom of God's words. How could two different Pastors come up with two different answers about whether God has a plan for my life? This is really worrying. Could these Pastors be making up most of the things they tell us in church?

TO this end, I have now decided to look into the teachings of the pastors and the bible with a more critical eye and examine very carefully whether the teachings correspond with history and the facts about the world. To think that these pastors could have beeen lying and deceiving us all these years really HURTS me. So my second big decision is that I have decided to suspend my belief and investigate more the teachings of the bible and listen more carefully to some of the critics of religions and Christianity. There really may be something out there that we (I) have not been exposed to having be raised in a very cloistered Christian home.
Verilee, you should have been testing everything you're told against the light of the scriptures and not simply accepting it based on the person be it pastor, bishop or pope. This is why so many are led astray and held captive to the baseless, sensationalized teachings of "men of god".

Another thing you must also understand is people are people, they are not infallible. They may be honest and sincere in their advice, but they could be wrong and more often than not - God has not spoken to any of them, they're simply giving their opinion, not God's. When I had to make a huge decision years back I got differing advice from a few friends I asked - godly friends. But in the end, I made my decision myself and from my heart with help from the Holy Spirit.

I encourage you to go ahead and examine everything you've been taught. I will add this caution, be careful in whatever resources or "historical facts about the world and bible" you seek to discover, because at the end of the day, your belief in God and Christ is not based on facts and figures and statistics but simply on faith, reinforced by the hand and work and touch of God you experience in your life everyday.

All the best in your quest brother.

it would amount to nada

it would be wiser

and assuming you had a silver screen query
he could not do it sufficient justice
as if that were even possible
I know a queen
in her possesion is knowledge of the impossible
she overthrows kings, just for the heck of it
rumor has it
Wall.E breaks her heart and builds it back
She is the Max - in the very literal sense of the word

and in the very terse of words
quick and powerful
spins a wheel
without which all might just grind to a stand still
and unite in unmistakable chorus
a serenade to woo her back
a Spikedcylinder
in a world of flat-eyed cogs, she reings supreme

and then the game-change
the x-factor just walked in
Gamine
gaming
playing all the cards just right
until all are enslaved just right
suddenly friends are foe
who can win this soul of gold

and in the midst of the story
one stands unique
He says No-2 all things
that be divorced from deep reason
wisdom, he knows something about that
and what was hidden
he has sworn to make bare
and manages to do so with delightful cheer

ah yes!
fresh is in the air
cold as iice
bold as nice
the temperature cannot decide
and so it yields
blissfully
hoping it is never rescued from this predicament

consider this
all ye of little faith
all ye of wack scripts
send a delegation baring gifts
and woo the excellence of sisikill
see floor?
sit.
cross feet.
and hope to absorb the radiation she emits
and hope that you can handle it

if not

if you're in need of prescription strength medication
patient, he will be your doctor
licensed to deal in whatever ails you
legally
Justkunmi
just add nothing
and ye shall be healed completely

So went the tale of the town envied by Tinseltown
about a knight
about a day
about damsels who never need rescuing
and one thing is inevitable
just one
you will not leave the same way you came in.

While I share the opinion that the theory of evolution has many flaws, I don't think we should dismiss it as a total myth. The theory does have many plausible ideas that are worth exploring I think.

Sorry JeSoul. I'll try to pay more attention. I dunno how this will come out but I was thinking, hey, if something happens to Spike Lee, there's this dude called Gary Gray or something to keep the black folks feeling 'not left out'. I'm disappointed to find that he (or his film) sucks. And just when I was beginning to have time for Jamie. Nothing do Butler though. I just love his aura. It must have been my mistake, I'd have sworn Cloudy with a chance of meatballs was in 3D. Anybody seen Toy Story yet? I think that one is in 3D. Nice take on Cameron, Max. I'm so proud of him.
And I went to see that movie in spite of Foxx. I love King Leonidas! you're right he has an aura about him, and he's the main reason I decided to see it. It wasn't terrible in the class of GI Joe lol, but they truly bombed what coulda been classic.

vescucci:
Oh, I forgot JeSoul. I'm appalled at the adulteratino you said was fone to the Sherlock Holmes character. I mean, if there's any character that's eternal and classic, it's that of Holmes. Some adaptations need to be left as is. That's why I stick to classic films. I mean classic with respect to age. I used to watch a series adaptation of Agatha Christie's Detective Poirot and I thought it was pretty good. But that's because it was made a long time ago. Same can be said of many many adaptation made prior to, at most, the 90s. Now, the clamour for big guns and fast cars and faster women has overshadowed any real art. I'm not exactly against any of these things but let the new age look for their own ideas without overdoing it like in the delectable G.I.Joe.

See me going on and boring everybody. I think I've made a point. There should be a revolution for keeping it real.
You're boring no one jare . . . this place is way too quiet these days. Even Spiked has vanished . . .

I also loved Poirot as well and I think I watched the same series you speak of (yeah that was a long time ago). The insatiable, misplaced need to modernize these classic characters is just sad.

Thoughful words Jesoul. I think keeping intuition and spirituality alive are key.
Trying as much as possible to avoid popular practice here of getting stuck on "define this" and "define that" I think I understand what you mean by spirituality. My followup question is what is the most reasonable way of reconciling all our differing 'intuitions' on a singular subject matter? is it even slightly possible?

But I will never subscribe to jettisoning all reasoning simply on account that faith is what is required.
I am certain that a "balanced diet" of intuition and reason is possible to begin to achieve this?
I like the way you put that, the key word being "all". Do you anticipate or leave room for any time or situation in life where all reason would need to be cast aside and faith alone leaned upon to carry one through?

It's more of a problem with the flawed built-in SMF search functions; they are not strong.
SMF has always had this problem with their search code, and I don't think Seun has installed any search mods.
SMF? code-speak . . . oga please clarify?

I mentioned Law Abiding Citizen a while back now . . . pay attention people, pay!  cool I thought it started out with a lot of promise but lost steam and completely unraveled towards the end. I saw "Happy Feet" again recently - what a delightful animation!  grin

I think I am about to feel exactly like the dissatisfied Bourne fans who read the books before watching the movie. Sherlock Holmes was bar none my favorite fictional character growing up, I think I've read every single story at least 3 times. So much beloved I wrote my huge final paper in English Lit 1st college on Doyle's Holmes.

Needless to say I will be monumentally upset if whatever they put up on the silver screen is not true to the books. And from what I have been hearing, Sherlock Holmes the movie has been adulterated  angry  he is not particularly known for combative skills, nor loose lifestyle  angry  . . . darn hollywood! their motto should be "screwing up legendary characters, one movie at a time"

Huxley, please return to whatever woodwork you just crawled out from.

You have not changed one bit, still cannot exhibit any sense of decorum. This is not a topic tending to your atheistic leanings - it is for christian issues. You can scurry along to open a new thread to vent and abandon.

^^there we go again in classic Viaro style . . . no need to fog the issue . . .

I was simply pointing out you made a statement and your tone was accusatory not interrogative in nature. You weren't soliciting responses but making a definitive statement of which you had no right to make. And to me, your one-liners were indicative you were unappreciative of my criticism. But if you say otherwise, I have no reason to press the issue further.

viaro:
Now, if proliferation of churches is a 'nuisance', then we are all guilty! ALL - bar none! Why? For the simple reason that everyone's cherished denomination is a part of the equation.
No we are not all guilty! Not all of us have "cherished denominations" and want to see them expand and plant at record speed. Personally, I pledge allegiance to any and every church that preaches the unadulterated gospel of Christ.

viaro:
But instead of seeing both sides of the issue as suggested in the OP ('need' and/or 'nuisance'), it didn't seem to me that anyone was addressing the "need" of the topic of this thread, viz: the 'proliferation of churches'. Instead, it seemed that we were more happy to see this trend as a "nuisance" and kept at it along such lines. Even Mavenb0x expressed some dismay directly at yours, Jesoul, in post #10 - "your last post is heart-breaking".
Don't drag the lovely Maven into this, she expressed dismay at the description in my post, not the way I expressed it. Get it right dude, get it right  cool

viaro:
So here:

4. Even so, in the case of (b) where the word 'here' was used in the wider context of this forum Nairaland, it was due to the fact that I'd seen other threads where issues like in this thread had been raised in various other ways. I cite an example from way back in 2005 where donnie sensibly handled just about the same question in the thread:

'The Church of Jesus Christ: Object of Mockery or Object of Praise?'

I encourage you to visit that thread and try to understand where I was coming from. Just because I was reserved in returning single-line responses to your previous complaints hitherto does not mean I didn't know what I was talking about. But there are other threads along the same strain of thought/observation:

   *  Dealing With Criticism As A Christian Body
   *  On the Apparent Correlation Between Religion and Social Ills
   *  Is Christianity Truly Synonymous With Truth And Development?
   *  Should Christians Judge Other Denominations While God Says Judge Not
   *  Is Church Part Of The World Problem Or Solution?
   *  American Church Culture Immoral, Says Study
   *  10 Decades - Christian Activity To Terminate!
   *  Why Do Some People Preach Against Other Churches?

The concerns from posters here ('here', as in 'this thread') have been variously expressed in such examples of threads above - and many others. Forgive me if my comments bothered you hitherto - I'd seen such trends far too many times and that was why I just wanted to humour you with those one-liners of 'if you say so' instead of joining issues with you.

Of course, I don't expect my clarifications to make any sense to you at all - and my answer to further complaints from you on this issue would remain the same: 'if you say so'. I just hope you have the nerve to take a hint what that means: not that viaro didn't know where he was coming from (because you didn't care to even find out and discuss anything); but like I said, I've seen the trend in many other threads before now that it worries me that some of us 'Christians' are making things worse off than making good sense of subjects like this.

On my part, in addition to what I posted in #50, I think another way to look at it should be to recommend solutions to this problem rather than just honking at the fact that there is a problem. Another thread that I found to point in the direction of a solution is this one: The Christian Youth Development Center – Nigeria. That was the way I was seeing things in this thread and this subject; but if you considered that to be "entirely presumptous", I'd say again: 'if you say so', although my comments (as you can see) where not birthed from any presumption.

Cheers.
Okay, I understand where you are coming from better. In the future you must understand others don't know where you're coming from and the burden is on you to clarify, not toss out dismissive, mischievious one-liner responses.

If all you're saying is we should look in the mirror ourselves and make sure we're not contributing to the problem and instead try to come up with solutions then I agree 1000% and I'm sure others will. Again my only problem was the tone of your post. Shikena.

But I apologize if any of my posts rubbed you wrong, when I go cavalier, I'm really cavalier.

Well its for certain that Hillary would've definitely been tougher and possibly more effective when it comes foreign policy. But don't forget too quickly she had some very shady domestic ideas herself.

congratulations dear republicans, healthcare reform is finally dead. the senate has passed a bill that could well have been written by the insurance companies. this sure will make you both happy.
Lol, is that what you thought I wanted?

I have dearly loved family members without health insurance cos they cannot afford it, it affects me directly and brings me absolutely no joy knowing there is still no provision for them and they will likely still have to go without. Couple that with recent news that Massachusetts premiums are expected to jump at least 15% next year.

Why in the world would you think I would be happy? I don't care about republicans vs democrats and who wins, I care about the policies and how they affect those I care about.
