Jo Bonfere: What Super Eagles lacked that denied team AFCON 2019 Glory by Imhons Erons July 21, 2019 in AFCON, News, Nigeria Ex Nigeria coach Jo Bonfere has spoken on why the country’s national football team did not return from the continental games with the trophy. Nigeria lost to the eventual champions Algeria in the semifinal but went on to defeat Tunisia to pick up the bronze medal. Twenty members of the 23-man squad were debuting for the Eagles at the AFCON while 18 of them were either 25 years old or younger. The Dutchman, who guided Nigeria’s Dream Team to an unbelievable gold medal triumph at the Atlanta 96 Olympic Games, believe the team could have performed better. Bonfere is however optimistic that the future is brighter with the current crop of players in the team. “They lacked tactics and cohesion at the Nations Cup. They were not creating the scoring chances be expected, but the players are young, they are good individually and if well managed, yes, they can do it (in future),” Bonfrere said. “Nigeria has plenty talents. They are young and they can play together more. Yes, it will be a good team in the future”. The veteran coach, who also won the Africa Cup of Nations silver medal with the Super Eagles in 2000, was quick to admit that Algeria deserved to win the AFCON 2019 title. “The final was great, Senegal was good but, yes, Algeria played more tactics. They are the worthy champions of Africa.” --soccernet |
''No one surprised me, I knew them all very well. The progress made by Samuel Chimerenka Chukwueze is quite remarkable, a young player from Villarreal. The left-footer was also the man of the game against South Africa,'' Rohr said to German television Sport1. ''We also liked our midfield with Etebo, Iwobi and Ndidi so far. That works fine. But it is not really a surprise, it is the confirmation of the work done.'' -- Rohr |

Again! Iheanacho fires blank in pre-season, Vardy and Albrighton to the rescue By Adebanjo - July 20, 2019 SCUNTHORPE, ENGLAND - JULY 16: Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester City in action during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Scunthorpe United and Leicester City at Glanford Park on July 16, 2019 in Scunthorpe, England. (Photo by Plumb Images/Leicester City via Getty Images) Kelechi Iheanacho got another 45 minutes of pre-season action under belt, following up Tuesday’s game against Scunthorpe with Saturday’s action against Cheltenham. Iheanacho was brought on as a sub on Tuesday at Glanford Park, but got Manager Brendan Roger’s nod to start Saturday’s friendly against another League Two side. However, the Nigerian failed to hit the back of the net for a second consecutive game. He did come close though, hitting the cross bar from a close range header. --FootballLiveNG |
AFCON 2019 Ranking: How Each of The 24 Teams Finished July 20, 2019 4:52 pm The inaugural 24-team AFCON – the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations, came to an end on Friday July 19 with the Desert Foxes of Algeria defeating the Teranga Lions of Senegal 1-0 in the final to win the competition for the second time following their 1990 feat as the host nation, Completesports.com reports. With the final match won and lost, it is easy for the millions of followers of the competition to tell who finished in the top four. Obviously, they are the champions Algeria (1), Senegal (2), Nigeria and Tunisia (4), capturing the teams that reached the semifinals of the tournament. But it is also important to know who made the top 5, top 10, etc, of the historic 24-team AFCON. The detailed ranking as done by CAF presents an interesting findings, which will quite vital as both fans and pundits talk about AFCON 2021 to be hosted by Cameroon. Where are the defending champions Cameroon in the final classification table? The Indomitable Lions could not defend their title beyond the Round of 16. They met their archrivals Nigeria who dispatched them after a thrilling matchup. Remarkably, AFCON finals debutants, Madagascar, finished in the 6th position behind fifth-placed team, Cote d’Ivoire. The ‘tiny’ Indian Ocean island nation ruffled some feathers in Egypt where they won Group B that also comprised Nigeria, Guinea and fellow newcomers Burundi. The Barea reached the quarterfinals where they lost to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. The Taifa Stars of Tanzania bring up the rear of the 24-team AFCON 2019. And is it now any surprise? They played in a Group C that had eventual finalists, Algeria and Senegal, as well as Kenya. Tanzania lost all their three group games; 2-0 to Senegal, 3-2 to Kenya and 3-0 to Algeria. If Siasia were still the coach, how many of our current players will be SE players today? @ tbaba1234 |
Rorh is behind Keshi now based on achievement. That's my point. Rohr will also benefit from Manu Garba and Amuneke's efforts with our Golden Eaglets if he stays long enough. tbaba1234: |
Can we at least admit Keshi has outperformed Rohr now? |
the man sef is 66.. he can still learn a few things though darkelf: |
Garba wants early World Cup preparation for Eaglets July 13, 2019 7:16 am Golden Eaglets coach Manu Garba has stated pleaded with the Nigeria Football Federation to give the team the needed preparation ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Brazil later in the year. Garba said this in an exclusive chat with brila.net that all the team needs now is adequate and early preparations. ”We want the federation to give us everything to start preparations early and we should be camped in a country closer to Brazil,” Manu concluded. The Golden Eaglets were drawn alongside Hungary, Australia, and Ecuador. |

u talk true.. somehow: |
Most people Nigerians or not are after their pockets. The difference is that some other countries have given their citizens reasons to believe they are special, whether true or not. They tell them these stories in their school system and show them bad but true images of other countries. My question are what do Nigerians see in other countries? What stories did our parents tell us, and even if they wanted to lie to us, will the reality on ground support their story? forgiveness: |
