I think it is high time we all agree to a particular unit/system of measurement when it comes to certain issues like player rankings.
The words below average, average, above average, top player, excellent player, world class, legend etc should be well defined and where possible mathematically proofed/backed up.
Reason for this is simple. I believe anyone who has grouped our players into classes has done so using his/her personal metrics which is based on their understanding and perception which might not be generally acceptable.
The rating done in football is often on scale of {0-10} or {0%-100%} which afford the no 5 and 50 to be average mark.
A pundit who uses 0-10scale can easily group players in to 5 classes {POOR(0-2.49), BELOW AVERAGE (2.50-4.99), AVERAGE(5), ABOVE AVERAGE(5.10-7.49) AND WORLD Class (7.5-10) while any one who uses just 1-3 or will likely have (BELOW AVERAGE, AVERAGE And WORLD Class) which is limited when the pool of players is much and wide.
If I were to use the 0-10 scale,
None of our players will make it to the World Class group. I repeat none. I'll place Ndidi in the 'top' of THE ABOVE AVERAGE group alongside Mikel, Iwobi slightly below them in the same group, The rest bunch of average and below average players.
The World Class tag should only be left for the very few players that are consistently churning out great stats season in season out. The likes of Aguero, KDB, Modric, Chielini, VVD, Ramos, Kante Neymar, Cavani Suarez, Ibrahimovich, De Gea, Lloris, Mbappe, Salah, etc led by Messi and Ronaldo who occupy the very Top.) won't class the likes of Pogba, Vardy, Auba, as World Class, they might be close but they ain't.
On the other hand. The word LEGENDARY IS RELATIVE! A player does not necessarily have to be world class to be a Legend. Even Green Forest FC(smiles) have their own Legends. Legendary status can be achieved via Loyalty, No of years of service, contribution etc. It can be attained either at club level or international level. Some players are lucky to have both. Bobby Charlton, Pirlo, Maradona, Pele etc
Morgan, Vardy, are Leicester Legends but not world class, Keshi, Mikel are Nigeria legends but not world class!
I hope this proposition and examples will help resolve various misconception and also save us from series of back and forth arguments.
Afobear: Why call me to this Sunken place where all you old men do is drink beer and talk about your averageeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee frauds you calm players ? Is Iheanacho Nacho pigmouth still better than mbappe and a hybrid of Messi ,Cavani and Ronaldo ? Drunks
But did Awoniyi perform better than Osimhen this season? Based on current form who is actually ahead? Personally I don’t see why Ajayi is on standby. Osimhen should be there (if not in nacho’s place).
edi287: Oya show us where he said "Kayodeinzaghi" and "Abdulzidane Ajagun" should've made this AFCON squad. You guys will just be looking for unnecessary trouble. All he has been arguing about is the exclusion of Awoniyi and whether you like it or not - it IS a valid argument.
He is the best midfielder in the championship — some of us have suggested here.
Icon79: Has anybody been monitoring Mikel's games in the Championship? Is he still good enough or is he gonna get an invite because he's John Obi Mikel
“African player of the year” says it all. “The best African LB” says it all. If you are the best in Ukraine, then be specific. If you are the best based in Africa, be specific. But saying the Best African player in the world is just like saying the best European player in the world. , the best Asian basketballer in the world etc
Make I go back sleep. Later bro
Modified Anyway u are right, considering all the leagues of the world — in that respect
forgiveness: Why don't you just correct and let us see how the English was wrong?
Favor99: I noticed it last year. Ighalo was getting heckled by Nigerians on social media right from the first game(before he missed the shot) It got so bad that he had to disable comments. He was heckled and ridiculed throughout the World Cup, him and Victor Moses
This is the same way the Nigerian media and nairalanders rubbish Oshimhole anyhow. The way these people get heckled non stop. Oh yea all 3 of this notable figures are from Edo State
The only 2 super eagles to receive such disrespect where the Edo players Ighalo and Moses, even though the other players played poorly. Moses actually had an above average World Cup and had a goal and assist, but that didn't stop people from singling going him out
Andrew444 said what Ive been saying for the past year, Ighalo got singled out and basically persecuted because of his tribe.
You guys are way too defensive like you trying to cover up. Theres some type of tribalism towards Edo people on social media over the past year and a half.
Look how the media and bloggers reports news from Edo State. Have you heard of instablognja?
Throughout nairaland people slander our state and make ridiculous lies and accusations.
I dont know what evil you all have planned for our people. But it won't work! Praise God
forgiveness: Taiwo didn't fade away at 26. In the same 2011, Taiwo captained Olympic Marseille to win French cup, Taiwo made Ligue 1 team of the season, CAF best 11 and even joined Ac Milan despite Marseille wanted him to stay.
Taiwo played in the EPL and Seria A in 2012.
But you said Mikel Obi is still playing at top level.
Is Championship better than EPL?
Taiwo didn't fade away at 26, rather many club wanted him because he was the best African LB in the world in 2011. That was for the third time.
I hate to generalize. Just as we can use some examples of shady white coaches to say all white coaches are bad. I’ve singled out Manu Garba. I’m still waiting for a substantive claim against him. Meanwhile I will never defend coaches that we know were corrupt — black or white.
Modified I even questioned Rohr’s position on his former assistant.
Kog45: Thegoodjoe you are a real Naija and i will always respect you for your incisive views on issues not those who always castigate our coaches as if we don’t know what happened during Westerhoff/Bonfrere era.
Dosu Joseph made Atlanta 96 based on a deal between Churchill Oliseh and Jo Bonfrere.
Asked Chidi Nwanu what took him to make US94 when Westerhoff paraded mediocre like Isaac Semitoje and very averaged Uche Okafor at Tunisia 94.
Keshi won Afcon for God sake and took us to 2nd round at WC but some would still be telling us type of players Keshi took to Afcon and WC.
Do we need to go to Trousier,Vogts,Libregths era where some players invitations are questionable
Truly foreign coaches are better but when it comes to deals they are also culprits with shady deals.
Respect thegoodjoe and Bascovanvelli for always comes out to say something good about our coaches despite their shortcomings.
