Sir Alex Ferguson has told his Manchester United players not to fear the damage Cristiano Ronaldo can inflict on them before the Champions League tie against Real Madrid tonight, reports The Times. Tonight’s appearance at old Trafford will be Ronaldo’s first since he left United nearly four years ago in an £80 million deal. While joking that the best way to stop the Portugal forward was to hope that he failed to show up, the United manager told his players that worrying about him would only undermine their prospects of reaching the quarter-finals. |
“We believe that some of our users, particularly our younger users, are aware of and actively engaging with other products and services similar to, or as a substitute for, Facebook. For example, we believe that some of our users have reduced their engagement with Facebook in favor of increased engagement with other products and services such as Instagram. In the event that our users increasingly engage with other products and services, we may experience a decline in user engagement and our business could be harmed.” That is from a Facebook Annual Report. Alyson Shontell writes in Business Insider that surveys have confirmed the above. So why isn't Facebook "cool" anymore? A social media expert opined to The Verge that it has to do with Facebook just no longer being a space that serves kids, as people now tend to look for more intimate places to share items with a handful of people, like Snapchat. There's a sense of privacy there, and it meets a need Facebook has grown too big to serve. This doesn't mean teens are deleting their Facebook profiles, of course—they are just using it less. But Zuckerberg needs not worry too much about it. Teens are still rabid Instagram users. So the Facebook man can still monetise them on mobile devices. Oscar Pistorius has clocked up £200,000 pounds in legal fees in just two weeks after his arrest for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day, reports DNA. The Paralympic sprinter has already spent up to £100,000 on legal representation and put up £75,000 for bail. And that may just be the beginning. According to legal expert Professor Tom Coetzee, Pistorius is going to spend much more as he will have to repeatedly meet with his lawyers until the trial commencement date of June 4. But money is said to be no worry for the paralympic sprinter who the Daily Star reports is one of the heirs to the wealth of the Pistorius family whose business interests include tourism, farming, property, transport and hunting. PrettyCindy: All seasonings contain salt and monosodium glutamate as their major component that is why you dont need to add salt to your indomie. Next time, add the seasoning cube or satchet first before adding the salt. That way, you will thirst the soup first and decide if you need additional salt or not.Precisely. |
One of the frontrunners in the March 4 presidential election in Kenya, Raila Odinga, is not leaving matters entirely to chance—or the electorate. He has sent a two man delegation to the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Stars in Calabar, SE Nigeria, reports The Guardian. The two-man squad is in Calabar to court Leader Olumba Olumba Obu’s spiritual support and favour to enable Mr Odinga win the race. Mr Obu is reported to have considerable presence and following in Kenya. Leader of the delegation, Joseph Abeng, a priest, said Odinga has a lot of respect for the spiritual leader and believes his prayers which had helped him in the past could do it for him once again. Abeng said Odinga asked him to appeal to Leader Obu to pray and work for him the way he did for President Barack Obama. Mr Odinga, the serving prime minister, is facing stiff opposition from Uhuru Kenyatta, his serving deputy. Both candidates are neck and neck in the polls but some watchers tip Mr Kenyatta to win due to the ethnic permutations of Kenya which appeared to have determined previous elections. The Lagos State government does not recognise any structure in the state that is not registered on a database in the laptop used by Olutoyin Ayinde, the Commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development. What happened at Ijora Badia, then, was not a demolition but a clearing of a refuse dump. Those are the submissions made by Commissioner Ayinde while speaking on Channels TV as a discussant on the topic ‘Badia: After the demolition’. On Saturday, 23 February 2013, a demolition squad from the Lagos State government had forcefully evicted thousands of residents of the Badia East community in Lagos. Two bulldozers and dozens of uniformed men, and by the end of the day, hundreds of houses were reduced to heaps, along with businesses, churches and community facilities. Ugandan women can now smile—certainly those of them forced to stay in marriages even when they are not happy, fearing that the man would demand the bride price back from her parents who had no money to pay up. The East African country’s parliament has approved a bill which makes bride price non-refundable and allows for a couple to share property once divorced. Ugo reports that The Marriage and Divorce Bill has been in the works since 1960 until the Speaker decided it was time to vote upon it. Clause 13 of the Bill, which was unanimously adopted, makes it an offence to marry a widow through the practice of inheritance without her consent. Not everyone is happy, though, as some MPs walked out of parliament, angry. For more http://234globe.com/story/118/Women+Empowerment%3A+Uganda+Outlaws+Bride+Price+Refund.html#sthash.h61SRnSe.dpuf |

Bokoharam: Do we read at all?At last a cautious person on the thread! That N500,000 is insurance only. There are other payouts they get. When you add "other payouts" to insurance, it's still far too small, I know. But let respect facts. |
Michaeljones36:My thoughts! |
nagoma: All these self conceited people who think they are clever, evil plans like this happen really fast. I just pray for you that you don't come into contact with such women. Before you know it you are reduced to charcoal and ashes.Exactly. He may have been inside a toilet, lying down, doing anything. |
Ndata: One of the consequences of polygamy.Rest in peace bro!Blaming this on polygamy is calling a dog a bad name to hang it. If she was his only wife she would still have suspected him of doing mistresses and done what she did. There are countless polygamous families where no one has set any fire. There are also monogamous marriages where fire is an a staple. |
Rossikk: ^^^Why don't you spend quality time on Google? You will find the answers to all your questions there. For instance a quick search showed that at least 500 Nigerian troops have been airlifted to Mali. As for when, how, and where they will be deployed to the battle, that's for the military strategists involved in the operations there to decide. Now, rather than YOU to simply wait, study and observe, you've gone for the worst possible scenario, including regurgitating Afua Hirshes' peabrained rantings (whereas her place is more suitably a kitchen), as a possible explanation. What you have "regurgitated" from Google hasn't answered the question. I asked why no single one of our troops has been deployed when Chadians who just came into the country are already at the front. Thank you. |
Long after the Nigerian troops are supposed to have arrived - complete with soldierly pictures posted on NL - The French took on the terrorists alone. Currently, the French are aided only by Chadian troops who came in from across the border as they seek out the cowardly terrorists who have withdrawn from metropolitan areas into the mountains. Now 1. Where are the Nigerian troops? 2. Is this anything to do with what Afua Hirsh wrote in her article - did the article have some elements of truth even though it contained glaring inaccuracies? 3. Or is this due to unconfirmed reports that after that single departure Nigerian troops could not be airlifted because they had no transport - thus reducing claims made by some on NL about the Nigerian military's eminent transport capabilities to patriotic nonsense? |
Logicboy03: How foolish. This doesn't make much sense. Not being religious (whether "religious" is defined as associating with a group or as simply looking up to a divine being for direction) is not the same thing as believing there is no God or not believing there is a god. |
Logicboy03: Unite with atheists please.Lol. All sides should be wooing them - they gat numbers! |
J12: I understand you perfectly, alot of nigerians are like you. People like you let people who hold "offices that represent the nigerian state" abuse their position and privilege. That's why Nigeria is in a sorry state. No, you don't understand him. Respect for the office is different from letting it's holder abuse his position. The presidency of a SYMBOL of the country. Having the president's and governor's picture on the walls is a mere symbolism and has nothing to do with the men's politics. |
graychuks: the case was taken to court and just recently the court ruledOh, really? Got any links to any news coverage of this ruling? |

Awhile back, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, announced the change of name of the University of Lagos (Unilag) to Moshood Abiola University (quickly dubbed "Maulag" ). There were a lot of kicks, particularly from within the university itself. Some people even went to court. But the Federal Government made it clear it would not budge and the NUC said it was prepared to effect the name change. It became a matter of who would blink first. However, nothing has been heard of the matter in recent times. What has happened? Has any of the two sides - FG and the university - blinked? Is the school now Unilag or Maulag? |
xynerise: Nyam instead of YamLol. |
A lot of these things are colloquial and I think it’s hasty to declare them “errors” - although some of them clearly are. Plate number. instead of number plate. Number plate is the metal or plastic material on which the number is written. The registration number is what is colloquially referred to as plate number. He/she is my baby (babies). Instead of , it is my baby. Pronoun for baby is 'it'. Come on! The use of “it” for your baby isn’t contemporary. kevoh: This one pisses me off 'I have warned you severally' instead of 'I have warned you several times'Thank you. I am not one to go "grammar" "grammar", but this one pisses me off to no end. |
It was déjà vu yesterday as Nigeria’s president Goodluck Jonathan gave his ministers marching orders to either sit up and produce results or resign their positions. Leadership reports that there had been speculations about a possible cabinet shake-up this January, following the president’s worries about the level of performance of government and the negative perception of his administration. The president told his ministers that although most of the criticisms against the administration were orchestrated by the opposition for some selfish reasons, they must work hard on his transformation agenda to prove them wrong. A Chinese father made an unusual move to get his unemployed son to stop playing video games and find a job: he hired hitmen to assassinate his son’s character—literally. The NY Daily News reports that the father, identified as Mr. Feng, said his 23-year-old son had been obsessed with online role-playing games since high school. He brought home poor grades and later, couldn’t even hold a real job at a software development company. That was when Feng thought of a way to save his son. He hired other players for an undisclosed fee to hunt down the young man’s avatar in his favorite online games, repeatedly killing him each time he logged on. But once the younger Feng found out, he shrugged off the virtual assassinations, saying it didn’t bother him and that he was merely taking his time to find a job that suited him. The father said he was relieved to find his son level-headed. More http://www.234globe.com/story/93/Chinese+Dad+Hires+Virtual+Hitmen+to+%27Kill%27+Son+in+Video+Games.html |
Lobbying, dirty deals and even blackmail, may be behind the setbacks being suffered by the federal government’s initiative to add cassava flour to wheat flour in the production of bread and other confectioneries. ThisDay reports that an American wheat lobby group and some Nigerian wheat flour millers may have resolved that the plan does not see the light of day. One strategy is to disrupt the policy using some close aides of the minister of agriculture and rural development, Akinwunmi Adesina. The United African Company (UAC), one of the leading bread and confectioneries producers to embrace the policy, is said to have run into serious difficulties, with wheat flour millers now threatening to withdraw their credit facilities to the company for its wheat needs as a way of compelling it to rethink its resolve to buy in on the cassava flour inclusion policy. Another food processing company in Lagos, Food Concepts, which was also considering implementing the initiative, might have been scared off because of the backlash suffered by UAC. You can now sit in the bath and watch HD movies. Sony has announced a new smartphone that can be used in the shower or bath without the risk of damage, reports BBC News. The Xperia Z can also record HDR (high dynamic range) video, a facility borrowed from its camera division. The Android-powered device was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The handset has a 5in (12.7cm) screen and is said to be capable of being submerged in water of up to one metre (3.3 ft) in depth for 30 minutes. It features a 13 megapixel camera and 4G LTE data connectivity, a Micro SD slot, and a 1080p x 1920p high-definition screen that borrows technology from Sony’s Bravia TV division to enhance video playback. ALL THE AIRLINES, INCLUDING AERO, ARIK, IRS, THE DEFUNCT AIR NIGERIA AND OTHERS GOT N120BILLION TWO YEARS AGO A fresh $500 million loan said to have been procured by the ministry of aviation from China, as intervention fund for the purchase of 30 aircraft for domestic airlines, is raising dust in the aviation sector, The Guardian reports. Critics said the airlines were yet to account for the over N120 billion given to them about two years ago. President of Aviation Round Table, Capt. Dele Ore, has described the plan by the ministry to acquire aircraft through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigerian (FAAN) as “definitely an abnormality and a very ridiculous usurpation of statutory functions”. He questioned the legal powers of FAAN to acquire aircraft. A former commandant, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd), has similarly condemned the action of the government, describing it as a big misplacement of priority. He noted that intervention cash doled out to airlines in the past had been misused and diverted by some of them. FAAN spokesman Yakubu Dati confirmed that government had concluded arrangement to purchase 30 brand new aircraft for airlines to boost their operations. He denied that any money was to be borrowed from China. Full story here http://www.234globe.com/story/84/Father+Christmas%3A+Experts+Flay+Planned+Bailout+for+Private+Airlines.html |
