coogar: in sane climes, cases like this one should have been given a thorough investigative journalism. at least, get a quote that from a police officer to confirm the arrest.....The reporter did speak to the police (read again), which is the standard requirement in crime reporting. Interviewing relatives is not. That is essential when you want to do a more detailed article which can come days after the initial BREAKING of the story. Anyway, I have already addressed the point I meant to. Edited. |
biolabee: Juan de dios///The title is NOT misleading. Why? Because it says allegedly! You want to misunderstand that? Go ahead! And an average Nigerians knows what allegedly means. Anyway, I understand the point about Nigerians misreading things. So what would you have them reporters do? Stop reporting? In 2007, shortly after Ohakim was sworn in as Imo State governor a graduate sitting across from me in the office was reading his profile online. Then he exclaimed that he was impressed to learn that the governor had a Ph.D. I got up and read what he was reading: "Ph.D. Cand." At which I told him it said "Ph.D. candidate". No one can do anything about your misreading things but yourself. Except they stop writing things altogether. |
coogar: i perused the main article and there was no single quote from the deceased's brother or police spokesman or any of the concerned parties. if that's not gutter press, i don't know what it is. this is believed to be a murder case - i expect a reporter with some intelligence to do his due diligence and get at least one quote from any of the people directly tied to the case, but this is nigeria - ordinary hearsays are good enough to get someone convicted! You can question why the reporter did not dig deeper - that would be okay, at least, on the face of it. But your first post called the article "gutter press" and proceeded to premise that label on the fact someone made a "general simplistic conclusion". As "general simplistic conclusions" go, none has been drawn here. The brother reported his suspicions to the police and the reporter reported that. It's left for the police to investigate. My point is that the writer did a good job of reporting the story as it was without inputing his own biases into it. He did not draw any conclusions. If you are familiar with online reporting you will know that when crime stories break, it usually appears on the website without all the facts having come in and with hardly any quotes. As more facts come in the article is developed or a fresh one is written. This is common, even with reputable news sites, including BBC News. |
Those who auditioned them did a fantastic job - not a single ugly babe! Let the show start. I should be watching it. |
coogar: nigerian gutter press in action - how do they know for sure this wasn't a suicide case? 2 women and a husband in a love triangle, one woman died via poison. the general simplistic conclusion = the other 2 connived and killed the deceased. The Nigerian press has many faults but the above article is not "gutter press". The title says "allegedly". Then inside the article it merely REPORTS "THE Police in Ondo State have arrested a 47-year-old bricklayer, Damilare Olotu, for allegedly poisoning his wife, Mary, for being barren." The above is followed with "it was alleged...", "Reports had it..." . It then concludes with a conversation with the police PRO. The permutations you have made are in order but the reporter here has done a good job of REPORTING without writing his own conclusions into the story. I don't really know where you found the faults that made you label the article "gutter press". |
Please change the topic of thread to an NCC-themed one or something. Nairaland gets mentioned in The Punch everyday. That's no news. I guess poster doesn't read the papers often. |

Power Supply Remains Poor amid Concern of Higher Tariffs Ejiofor Alike Electricity supply across the country is yet to improve even as consumers are paying higher tariffs with fresh concern of further increase in line with the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), THISDAY has learnt. This is coming as Marubeni Power International of Japan will soon complete the contract for the resuscitation of the Unit 6 of the 1,320megawatt-capacity Egbin Power Station in Lagos, to ensure that the station realises its full generation capacity. THISDAY gathered that due to several system collapses, which damaged some transmission facilities, average supply in the past couple of weeks has not exceeded 3,437megawatts, even when the country had previously celebrated peak supply of 4,377megawatts. This deteriorating electricity, it was learnt, is coming in the wake of recent increase in tariffs, with fixed charges going up from N500 to N700 or N800, depending on the location. Apart from the recent increase in fixed charges, there is also plan to increase the energy cost or cost per kilowatt hour of electricity in line with MYTO, which requires that electricity charges will go up yearly from 2012 to 2016 until cost-reflective tariff is attained. Meanwhile, the supply situation has remained poor in most places as there had been no significant improvement in generation. THISDAY gathered generation, which averaged 3,000megwatts since 2007 had continued to hover around this figure, while there had been astronomical increase in the number of consumers. Investigation revealed that some areas that enjoyed 12-hourly supply were now being provided with eight hours of supply. A source at the National Control Centre (NCC) at Osogbo in Osun State told THISDAY at the weekend that with the dwindling supply, priority areas were always considered in allocating supply. “There has been high demand and poor supply in recent weeks. So, we have to feed our priority areas before allocating to other areas. That accounts for the fluctuation being witnessed in some areas,” he said. In a related development, Marubeni Power International of Japan is set to complete the repairs of the 220megawatt-capacity Unit 6 of the Egbin Power Station, which was awarded to it on December 19, 2013. A source at the power plant told THISDAY that the Japanese firm was in the process of completing the job, which was initially scheduled to last for 90 days. Before the contract was awarded, Units 1,2,3,4 and 5 were generating 994megawatts to the national grid, while the Unit 6’s Generator Rotor was being awaited. Marubeni Engineering West Africa Limited had earlier completed the contract for the replacement of Unit 6’s automative voltage regulator (AVR) Thyristor panel, which completion date was initially scheduled for June 2011. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/power-supply-remains-poor-amid-concern-of-higher-tariffs/154099/ |
My friend is suffering from a serious case of depression. It's beginning to affect his work and relationships. I think he needs to see a psychiatrist. Do you know anyone who handles this sort of thing? |
Another looming disaster is the potential failure of the national databases. Think of the cost involved in setting up the National Identity commission's database, Driver's Licence database, Immigration database, federal and state payroll databases among other myriad white-elephant duplications. These make-up artists and their digital Photoshop siblings are a bigger threat to National Security than that poor, misguided Snowden fellow. Imagine the multiple profile photos Nigerian women have uploaded to these databases with the potential for chaos they portend. Little wonder Britain has asked us to deposit £3000 for the logjam our women have created in their efficient processes.Falls into the lagoon laughing. |

Power cuts worsen as generation drops by 1,598MW JUNE 24, 2013 BY AKINPELU DADA Power generation in the country dropped by 1,598 megawatts on Sunday, the Transmission Company of Nigeria said. The company explained that the massive load shedding being experienced nationwide was caused by vandalism of two major gas pipelines supplying gas to eight power generating stations. The affected stations are Egbin/AES, Olorunsogo, Omotoso, Geregu NIPP, Afam IV and VI as well as River State Independent Power Station, resulting in drastic reduction of power supply. In a statement signed by the General Manager (Public Affairs), TCN, Mr. Dave Ifabiyi, the company said that one of the vandalised gas pipelines was taking supply from the Okoloma gas plant, while the other was taking from Escravos. Ifabiyi said, “With the disruption of gas supply through the lines, the Nigerian Gas Company is unable to move gas to Afam IV and Afam VI as well as the Independent Power Plant in Rivers State, resulting in generation loss of 593MW. “Also, the second vandalised gas pipeline from Escravos to Warri caused a cutback of 1,005MW in power generation from Egbin/AES power generating station, Olorunsogo, Omotosho and Geregu NIPP power generating plants.” According to the statement, with the loss of 1,598MW, the total power generation as of 2pm on Sunday is 2,290MW. With this low level generation, the company said the operation and control of the power system was a major challenge. TCN said due to the critical importance of the pipelines to power generation, NGC was working seriously to isolate the vandalised portions of the pipelines in order to effect repairs, with the hope that gas supply could be restored to the affected generating stations soonest. The company said it deeply regretted inconveniences the attendant load shedding was causing Nigerians nationwide. Apart from gas supply shortage, the worsening power supply situation in the country had in recent times been blamed on frequent collapse of the generation and transmission systems. Contrary to the claims in government quarters that the country was generating at least 4,500MW of electricity daily, it was gathered that the figure was significantly lower than that. PHCN statistics showed that the last time the country generated 4,500MW of electricity was on December 23, 2012. This means that all the power generation plants in the country have not generated up to 4,000MW since January 2013 due to consistent system collapse. For instance, power generation had dropped to 3,118.4MW on June 16, 2013, though the peak demand forecast as of that day was 12,800MW. This was 1,370MW lower than the highest peak generation of 4,517.6MW achieved on Sunday, December 23, 2012. Generation picked up again on Monday, June 17, 2013 to 3,720.50MW, but dropped to 3,507.90MW the following day. The country had, in the past five months, recorded more than 15 power system collapses. “The high rate of system collapse in recent time, which has given rise to more than 15 collapses in the last five months, calls for a critical look,” the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said recently. In view of this, the minister set up a 13-member Technical Investigative Panel on System Collapse to find the causes of the incessant collapse of electricity infrastructure across the country. The country recorded a total of 24 system failures in 2012, with 15 being total and nine partial system collapses. It recorded 39 and 42 system failures in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Power generation had dropped by 31,529MW in April, which was 33.9 per cent of the 4,517MW attained on December 21, 2012. The Ministry of Power had attributed the sharp drop in supply to general system collapse. Power generation had experienced a downward trend since December 17, 2012 when it dropped to 4,349.7MW amid fluctuating figures, finally declining to 2,987.6 on April 6, 2013.
There was no need for the emphasis, as Rawlings was not referring to just Nigeria. He was talking about Africa as a whole. The issues he raised were not peculiar to Nigeria, they are the banes to the progress of Africa as a whole. Had it been that they were peculiar to Nigeria, then, the need for the emphasis would have arisen. It was nothing but a case of twisting of Rawlings speech in order to score cheap political points against the president. Premium Times should be ashamed of itself.
I'm a fan of Premium Times, but I agree with you. There is no other objective way to see this. I expect them at Journalism schools to mass-produce this article for use as example of bad journalism. |

I think Chinedu Nebo is incompetent and is letting the crooks in that sector run rings around him. At least, Barth Nnaji was competent and we were making some progress. |
Consumers groan as system collapse worsens power supply JUNE 21, 2013 BY DAYO OKETOLA Electricity consumers have condemned the worsening power situation in the country and blamed the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for gross inefficiency. They lamented that power supply had become poorer in recent times and warned that the situation was no longer acceptable, especially as they were still being forced to pay ‘crazy bills’ by PHCN. The Chairman, Akoka Community Development Association in Lagos, Mr. Segun Adesanya, who spoke with our correspondent, bemoaned the poor power supply to his area, saying consumers barely enjoyed electricity for 20 minutes daily. He explained that the situation had got worse in recent times, and urged PHCN to improve on the situation. Adesanya said members of the CDA had concluded plans to protest at the Ikeja Distribution Company to drive home their displeasure about the poor power supply in the country. The Assistant Secretary General, Tijani Bello Resident Association, Ojodu, Lagos, Ms. Murna Danmadami, also lambasted PHCN for poor power supply, saying the situation had gone from bad to worse. “Poor power supply is disturbing our businesses, livelihood and our personal lives. You go out in the morning and work very hard, but when you come back home, you don’t have peace and quietness because of so many generators making a noise,” she said. Mr. Adewunmi Oluwole, who lives at Ipaja Estate in Lagos, said power supply in his area had become poorer lately, adding that PHCN had resorted to load shedding amid irregular supply. While consumers continue to groan, PHCN officials, who did not want to be named, attributed the situation to system collapse, which had become a regular occurrence in the power sector. Contrary to the claims in government quarters that the country generates at least 4,500 megawatts of electricity daily, our correspondent gathered that the figure was significantly lower than that. mysticgal: And the police should throw the case into river nileNo. They must QUESTION the girl. It's called PROCEDURE. They need to verify her story through a formal investigation. Once you set the PRECEDENCE the villagers want to set and which the majority of people here seem to support, anyone with a grudge can chop off the head of their father or anyone for that matter and claim they were molested since it's okay to chop off molester's heads and nothing dey happen. |

@Anita: Lol at robbery being more honourable than prosti.tution. Talk about moral relativism. @Ochi: You gotta like this guy's positivity - even though he will make a horrible police officer. |
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old woman, Anita Ekechukwu, her brother, Sunday Ekechukwu; and three others, Benedict Nwadike, Emmanuel Ochi, also known as General and George Emmanuel, aka Force Man, for armed robbery. According to the police authorities, the suspects were arrested while robbing bureau de change operators of millions of naira at different times. Narrating how the suspects operated, a source at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad said Anita would pose as a customer and convince the bureau de change operator to enter a vehicle with her only to rob him. The source said, “Anita would go to a bank and say she wanted to buy foreign currency knowing well that banks do not sell foreign currency to just anyone. “The bankers would introduce her to a bureau de change operator and they would establish contact. Later, she will call them for a huge transaction in a vehicle. “When the victim enters the vehicle, her colleagues would come in another vehicle, abduct the victim, rob him of his money at gunpoint and then throw him out of the vehicle.” PUNCH Metro learnt that the robbers were arrested while trying to rob one Sanusi of $80,000 (N12.8m). The police source said the robbers operated around a bank in Lekki and had boarded their vehicle when policemen intercepted them. He said, “They organised another operation. Already police were aware that the gang was about to operate around the area. The robbers had already abducted their victim, when the police swooped on them and arrested them. The robbers then revealed the location of the others. The police recovered the money collected from the victim.” Anita said she took to robbery because of unemployment, adding that it was more honourable than prostitution. She said it was her brother that introduced her to the illegitimate business but insisted they never used guns for their operations. She said, “I am a member of the gang but we do not operate with gun. I am from Owerri, in Imo State. I am unemployed but I live at Lekki with my elder brother, Sunday, who is a building contractor. “I joined the gang because I could not secure any reasonable employment. “I joined the gang this year and I was given the telephone number of a bureau de change operator. I told him I wanted to buy $30,000. The next day, he sent his brothers who brought the dollars. I then told the man that we were going to a bank where I would pay him the naira equivalent. On the way to the bank, we collected the money from the man and pushed him out of the vehicle.” Another suspect, Ochi, who claimed to be 24 years old, said he was a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State. He said his dream was to join the Nigeria Police but it was unclear if he would still be enlisted following his arrest. He said, “My role in the gang is to push the victim out of our vehicle but I am always careful so that he will not fall and hit his head against a stone or hard object. “I am a student of Olabisi Olabanjo University, Ogun State and I am in 300 level studying Crime Investigation. I intended to enlist in Nigeria Police Force when I graduate. I want to become a police detective. On his hope of realising his life ambition to become police detective after graduation, now that he had been arrested he said, “It is God that will decide. If I regain my freedom I will stand a chance. Even if I am jailed, I may get state pardon. Everything depends on God.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/metro/i-still-want-to-join-police-robbery-suspect/ |
I hope the accused doesn't get Naija justice and proper investigations will be carried out to ascertain his culpability. The girl could have made a mistake. |
WRITING IN THE TELEGRAPH, KAREN ROBERTSON REVIEWS A NEW BOOK WITH A BOLD CLAIM You may have to start thinking like women to be successful in the emerging world order—especially if you are a risk taker and long-term planning for you means nothing more than carrying around some condoms in your wallet. These are the submissions in a new book, The Athena Doctrine. It says we’re witnessing a seismic shift in terms of what values drive success, morality and happiness. According to authors John Gerzema and Michael D’Antonio, an increasingly social, transparent and interdependent world is the death knell for values traditionally considered to be ‘masculine’—decisiveness, aggression, resilience, pride and analysis. Now what is required to create the kind of future we all want to live in are—yeah, feminine traits—listening, collaborating, flexibility, and sharing the credit and your feelings. The authors spent nearly two years travelling to 13 countries, 26 cities and speaking to 64,000 people. More than half of the people consulted were dissatisfied with the conduct of men in their country—reckless risk-taking, inequality. In fact, two-thirds of the 64,000 polled felt that the world would be a better place if men thought more like women. If you’re wondering what exactly you’re supposed to do to cultivate feminine mind-set and be successful, the authors have supplied a list: 1. long-term planning 2. expressiveness 3. reasonableness 4. loyalty 5. flexibility 6. patience 7. intuitiveness 8. passion 9. empathy 10. selflessness But Karen Robertson does not think this New York Times bestseller is very helpful or that its subject is a useful conversation. She asks if it’s not reductive to apportion values and attributes by gender and accuses the authors of “semantic hand waving” for listing traits as gender specific and then turning around to say “… ‘feminine’ values don’t belong to one gender”. “Never mind a world where men think more like women—how about one where we all just think? End of.” More http://www.234globe.com/story/367/Why+Men+Have+to+Start+Thinking+like+Women+to+Succeed.html# |
DUO CHARGED WITH PEEPING AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY Two Georgia men grooving by secretly ogling some undressed women crashed through the ceiling of a movie theatre restroom in a peeping Tom operation gone awry, reports The Smoking Gun. The arrest warrants states that they were “invading the privacy” of female victims. Relatives Eduard Alexander Kovynev, 27, and Eduard Petrovich Kovynev, 26, apparently went into the men’s bathroom at the Venture Cinema 12 in Duluth. From there, they navigated to the area above the nearby women’s restroom, where they allegedly spent time ogling away. The situation resolved, however, when the bathroom’s drop ceiling, which apparently was not designed to hold the weight of two adults, gave way and sent the duo tumbling downwards to converge with porcelain and concrete. Gwinnett County Police Department officers busted the two Kovynevs and charged them with peeping Tom, criminal damage to property, and public drunkenness. One of the warrants states that the accused peepers caused more than $500 in damages to lights and the bathroom ceiling by “crawling around in ceiling” and “falling through the ceiling” at the movie theatre. 'SHE SLAPPED AND CLAWED ME' A 27-year-old South Carolina woman, Amanda Cantwell, has been arrested on a domestic violence charge after allegedly attacking her live-in boyfriend when he refused to have sex with her, reports The Smoking Gun. She is due to appear in court Friday. According to a Charleston Police Department report, Jeffrey Chaffin, 33, told investigators that he and Cantwell had been drinking Monday evening when trouble started. Chaffin, who has lived with Cantwell for about 18 months, told officers that she “became extremely upset when he refused to have sexual intercourse with her”. Chaffin added that Cantwell slapped him in the head, jumped on his back, and “inserted her fingers in his mouth and clawed the inside of his cheeks with her fingernails.” After getting Cantwell off his back, Chaffin dialed 911. Police responding to his call “were able to observe fresh scratches and blood inside the victim’s mouth”. In her defence, Cantwell said there was a verbal dispute and she only attacked Chaffin after he began choking her. But policemen “did not observe any marks/redness on or around the offender’s neck”. He told cops he was staying put at her place and was not in “fear for his safety.” For more: http://www.234globe.com/story/355/Woman+Batters+Boyfriend+for+Refusing+Sex.html |
