luvly3: Visa = TRV, I believe if he was referring to study permit he would have said "study permit".... These 2 terms are reffered to differently to avoid mix up.. Visa= study permit or work permit. |

mumihaja: Hello house,
My Canadian Visa expired last month "March" how do i renew it? do i have to start the application process all over again? or do i need to fill a different form to renew it? This was the original post ^. So tell me where TRV was mentioned there luvly3: The initial poster was asking about getting a new TRV and not a study permit, but you posted the link for a study permit which is very different from what the poster wanted that's why Akanni drew your attention to but u are refusing to see your mistake leading to the spamming of the thread. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 9:44pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
luvly3: Lol now we are on the same page... TRV= temporary resident visa, this is what we have all been telling you... That the stay depends on the study permit not the Temporary Resident Visa... And you need to extend/renewing your study or work permit before it expires....contrary to your suggestion. |

realone01: this is what akanni n luvly has been trying to explain to you They are not actually saying the same thing...some of them think that visa is different from permit...which is not true. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 9:30pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
blessedfavoured: Exactly the point the other brother is trying to make. As far as being legal in canada is concerned what matters is the study/work permit and not the TRV. It's funny how y'all have been saying the same thing all this time, but in different ways They are all saying different things. Your length of stay in Canada will be stated on your study/work permit stamped at POE and not TRV. TRV allows you to get into Canada to be issued work or study visa. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 9:17pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
blessedfavoured: TRV is not visa? why then do you need it to re-enter even with a valid work/study permit. For the record; TRV - Temporary Resident Visa What I meant to say that is...not actual visa, work permit or study permit is. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 9:11pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
blessedfavoured: Apparently, in Canada, you can have a valid study permit/work permit even when the original visa issued from naija(trv) is expired. and you can also renew the study permit even when you don't have a valid trv. But if you plan to leave canada and re-enter even with your valid study permit, you still need to get a trv. TRV is not visa, study permit given to you at the POE is and that is what you need to extend/renew before it expires |

Bobola86: Lol. Bro, it's not the same thing. Your visa can expire while in Canada. you just have to renew it before you leave canada if you plan to come back in. You said something earlier which I will refer to, renewing is different from extending. You extend a study permit before it expires and renew an expired visa. It's simple English. You renew something that's expired and extend something that's about to expire so it won't expire. I studied for my undergraduates outside nigeria and I was given a TRV from nigeria. Applied for a study permit which serves as my residence permit immediately I got there. Kept on extending my study permit till I completed my studies. I was given a 3 months TRV from nigeria and it expired the month I got there. I didn't renew my visa till i completed my studies And leave. You should try and learn from us too bro. Peace. Now back to the reason for this argument. Y'all should calm down as am sure you are off topic here. The person that asked this question is talking about a visit visa I think which he or she needs to renew. It's going too far. Like I said earlier, let everyone do more research on whatever Question asked here. Yes there is absolutely no difference between renewing a visa and extending it, when you send in your visa/permit to be renewed you are basically extending the duration of that permit. If you insist then tell me when you renew a visa/permit and when you extend it. |

luvly3: Well I didn't quite see your point there... However when someone is applying to study in Canada, we indirectly apply for a visa and a study permit but only the visa is issued in Nigeria while the study permit is issued in Canada .... So if u say it's the same thing it's fine by me... My point is that you are very legal in Canada with an expired visa and a valid study permit.... The same thing. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 8:31pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
yregs: Study permit is issued at the Point of Entry in Canada. When you get to Canada, you spend about 3hr to obtain a study permit. The TRV is only valid to enter Canada. I read about a guy who wasnt issued a study permit at the embassy due to oversight and ignorance, he couldnt proceed with school reg despite the fact that he had a valid Visa. He had to go back to the nearest Airport to meet with the Canada Border Immigration service to be issued a Study permit.
So for the person with an expired TRV, as far as ur Study permit is valid and u ve no plans of leaving Canada to return, u are a legal immigrant. You must apply for an extension of ur study permit if you intend to stay longer than the approved date. No story for dat one o. You lot are missing the point, visa is an umbrella name for different types of permits.....work, study, visiting etc whatever is stamped on your passport at the POE is the visa aka work permit or study permit. |

luvly3: Haha a visa gives you no status whatsoever in Canada it only allows you to enter Canada... When your study permit or work permit expires then you are illegal.. It is stated on the permit that you must leave Canada at the expiration of the study permit, when you do not leave then you are illegal... It has nothing to do with visa.. So study permit and visa are two different things? |

luvly3: Your comment I quoted.... You can be in Canada legitimately without a valid Visa... Visa is only needed to enter Canada Really? So the moment you entered Canada you don't need to worry about visa extension when it expires? |

Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 5:33pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
akanni: Justwise, common! What is the meaning of a TRV in Canada? It allows you to enter Canada right? What is the meaning of a Study permit? It allows you to study for a program. Imagine you have a study permit for 2 yrs and a TRV for 1 year maybe because your intl passport expires in a year (my case), are you saying because my TRV expires, I am now illegally in Canada even with my study permit? As long as my study permit is not expired, I can stay for as long as my study permit allows, with expired trv; as long as I do not leave Canada. TRV allows you enter Canada whenever you want to and if you are in Canada with a valid study permit, you can always renew your TRV if you plan on leaving Canada to visit another country as long as your study permit is VALID. This might not be same for other countries though but we are talking about Canada right? The cic.gc.ca site is self explanatory with regards to renewing the TRV; as long as your study permit is valid, you can always renew your TRV. Note: this is specific to Canada, other countries only issue you student visa while Canada issues you a study permit after your TRV which could be why you believe you are an illegal immigrant with an expired TRV. If after this I have not been able to convince you, I guess I will have to go for a Phd in communications, hahahahahahahahaha N.b Apologies for my earlier error on the US visit visa, I applied outside Nigeria after it had expired and it was a visit visa. You are just a master of confusion and i hope only you believe what you just written. Whatever you are holding TRV/study visa/work visa...etc ..you are advised to apply for an extension/renew 30days before it expires. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 4:49pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
akanni: Emphasis on the bolded "your current temporary resident status is still valid, and your existing visa counterfoil is expired or was valid for only one entry, and you need a new temporary resident visa to return to Canada in the near future".
Your existing visa counterfoil is expired or valid for only one entry! Even visit visa for the US, i renewed it after it had expired, why would it be a big deal renewing after expiry really? As long as you are legitimately in Canada, TRV is only meant for re-entry so it really shouldn't be a big call to renew after expiry plainly speaking. Bro you are confusing things here. Nothing like being legitimate when you are holding an expired visa/TRV. In any country the moment your visa expires you becomes an illegal immigrant. Visa extension is done while you still have valid visa in that country else you leave and reapply from your home country. |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 4:21pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
akanni: you can renew after it expires bro, not extend i added the link from the CIC site. check renew TRV inside Canada, it is possible as long as your status is still valid i.e your study permit is not expired as a stduent. Renewing and extending are the same thing, there is no difference. I don't think you read and understood that link hence your post above and it did not mention anywhere in that link that you can renew after it expired |
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada Part 7 by justwise(mod): 4:13pm On Apr 22, 2015 |
akanni: Not true justwise, for TRV, depending on where the person is, if he/she plans to travel out of Canada, that is when the TRV comes in and it si expected that the person applies for the TRV before travelling out of Canada, say 2 months before. Apply for a new temporary resident visa from within Canada If you are a temporary resident in Canada with valid status (that is, you have a valid study permit or work permit), you can apply for a new temporary resident visa to return to Canada before you leave.
You can apply in Canada if:
you are a legally admitted student or foreign worker in Canada with a Canadian residential address, your current temporary resident status is still valid, and your existing visa counterfoil is expired or was valid for only one entry, and you need a new temporary resident visa to return to Canada in the near future. If this does not apply to you, see our general instructions on how to apply.

JohnSnow008: Good evening. I just submitted my online application and paid the visa application fee but just discovered that I made a mistake with my passport number on the form I submitted. Is there a way to correct this without having to start the process all over again bearing in mind that I have already paid for the application and booked a date to visit the embassy. daramolavo: @ Johnsnow008, I believe the only way to make corrections is on the hardcopy of the form. I made a mistake on my form too but corrected it on the hardcopy on my way to VAC at Ikeja. Just make sure you sign it off. I even made i mistake with the date of Church marrige during the interview. All well and good i still got the settlement Visa 3 weeks ago. Just make sure you sign off your corrections. You got your answer here ^^ |

redmist: Good evn Justwise, I want to apply for a family visit visa on the 4th of may as my father permanently resides and work over there in UK... I already have an invitation letter from him, a leave approval letter from my company stating how long I'll be away and when I'd be expected to resume work. I am a seafarer and currently I'm being owed 5months salary so my question is do I stand a good chance if I submit a sponsor or guarantor's bank statement in place of mine to cover the whole travelling expense. I have previously traveled to Togo and Ghana... pls @justwise I need your wise response... thanks Your chances in that situation is very slim. With visiting visa application as an adult...is either you have the money to sponsor the trip or you don't. |
