@2buff (thanks 4 spicy up the section wt ur post) as a programmer, tryng to create a product one thing u'll notice is There isnt enough time in a year! A year has about 8750 hrs. A product may require 5000+ development time, coding, testing, fine tuning. Thats almost a year. So wat do i say, hit the streets and start to sell, most solo developers in naija hav no funding to hire hands (lawyers etc), you'll learn dynamically as you make your mistakes. (this is how eric sink learnt), by the time your selling your 3rd/4th product or starting a company u'd hav picked up some ideas of business gotten lawyer buddies and friends and developed a sense of direction but it starts from making the hit solo green eyed and wet behind the ears. I'm talking of 1man programmer enterprenuer here. For guys starting full blown gigs, i.e making a programming idea into a corporate entity like facebook, google etc. Stick with your technical side and hire best of breed ceo's analyst lawyers also carvort wt big boys in the industry. You'll need their insight and support (zuckerberg was taken under the wings of peter theil , founder of paypal, the character played by timberlake in the movie, *forgotten his name*, contributed also to making facebook take off, the financial ground work was laid by eduardo saverin (somebody help wt the names) so zucker boy had a full team to rob minds with ) . The value of the combined team knowledge compensates for the programmers business knowledge shortfall. Besides a programmer who wants to make money the corporate route make far more than the solo coder. Paul graham, built a product with 2 other programmers, sold the product to yahoo for millions, retired from the rat race got into venture capitalism, all business acumen needed to succeed has come from the streets rather than from a formal school taught programme. Dan brinklin, creator of visicalc, the app that turned apple from a toy to a major domo, lost his opportunity by failing to patent his innovation u may say because he businness savvy but not so fast , his co-developer, that wrote the editor and assembler on the system he used was a harvard mba! . As an mba he was supposed to be conversant wt the legal implication of not building a thorn bush around their creation. So what am i really saying! Some programming ideas can only b fully realized by the owner of that idea, when bricklin talked to other programmers abt his plan , most didnt see the big deal about it. Bricklin, zuckerg, shawn fannings, had to work their behind off to create a working prototype only then , with intense marketing, meetings etc did the business side take. Note:: shawn fannings, creator of napster, is a hard core enterprenuer. How did he get the spirit? From his experience with napster. None of these guys deserted their technical talent by trying to get a business degree. And theyre still innovating (paul graham is creating a new dialect of lisp, fannings has created so many tech startups) the mba/ thing is usually the path of the corporate coder. Because of management pressure (and contempt for programmers) and job loss threat from outsourcing. Corporation building programmers (like zuckerberg, paul graham, joel (founder of fog creek), eric sink, bezos) . Learn on the street and from their non techie teams(lawyers, accountants , industry vets etc).
ProgrammingRe: Your Future As A Software Developer by kambo(m): 5:33am On Jan 31, 2013
fact is on a more serious note most of the advice given here is disaster and nonsense.
for the guy that wants to make tech enterprenuers out of developers what do you mean!
- you want to make them into business men. do you guys know that software is a calling and a field?
okay the word field has been thrown around for so long,so let me explain.
a field is like trying to drink the ocean! - you will never drink it all up but you will
sure do well if you can gulp a lake full in your life time.
you cannot be drinking the ocean and eating the forest (another field) at the same time.
you can only b and do one!
i mean do it very well.
The comments here can lead to dastard influence - most of you guys should go sleep or
come back in 10 years to comment.
fact, softwre development WILL NEVER BECOME A LAYMAN'S AFFAIR. NEVER.
even if they write tools that can produce ms office - complete with ms word, excel, etc-
at a press of a button , developers will only use to write more MILLIONS OF LINES OF CODE!!
@poster, please re-read the histories of all major software startups thoroughly.
there's isnt enough hours in a day to implement a really decent software.
do you know that using present technology that one really innovative software can
take you 5 - 10 years to code!! where is the time to go learn the business side?
see.
Bill gates. - correction.
Gates wasnt thinking of writing or selling operating systems.
He was a techy, But he met the creator of the then selling os cp/m - garry kindall.
kindal had a phD in c.s - note this. he trained fully in his field , this phD knowledge
gave him the intellectual capital to make contributions that would change the face
of OS history forever!!
(and to think a poster here is wondering what the value of a C.S degree is! angry angry
)
when kindall's company got into full operation - BUSINESS GUYS took over the handling
of the business SIDE!!
- kindall still continued to make innovations and expand on the cp/m Os until his death.
- the business side will be learned on the job! -
first come to market with the bacon - not empty handed.
bring the pig to market and sell -
By the time you're making sells in the hundreds of thousands of usd or selling to
1,000 people, you'd know by trial and error what the business side is.

Gates hired a Business expert to run the business side when microsoft got off the ground.

>> Google:
Sergey and larry page - honed their technical skills.
When google went of the ground the hired a business guy, with strong technical backgrounds, Eric Smidth or so (last name wrong)
. Without the product, page rank, they'd be no google.
sergey and larry didnt go get mba's to run the business. which is what most of the
poster's here will be thinking of doing.
note, as you have 10years+ in programming , so the business guy will be having on the business side , a 1 or 2 year mba programmme wont impart that experience.

>> facebook.
zuckerberg, liaised , had a track record of innovating.
his previous app, synaptic caught microsoft attention , so much that they wanted to
hire him.
(people here a posting , immediate pragmatism over dreaming-!!
note while synaptic was intensely practical - its a practically that was borne out
fantasy - fantasy cuz zuckerberg was thinking in an untypical manner,
much in the same way the guy that sold a pixel for a dollar was thinking.
this defeats the "useful to society viewpoint" because that viewpoint says
that if you dont have immediate value from your coding you should change.
this is bunkum. explore your fantasy- it may have future pragmatic value.
in the 19th century- a mathematician , Hardy , said they were carrying out
research that had no "practical value",
guess what? - that no "practical value " mathematics formed the bedrock for
modern day cryptographic systems!!
heard of Markov, a mathematician, he toyed with a mathematical tool for
making smarter random guesses, guess what?, that toy tool he invented
is so indispensible in finance, economics, biology etc that
a crater on the moon was named after him!. what if he discarded the idea for
want of "pragmatic value"!)
what you should say is - innovate but engage in practical immediate jobs - for
immediate pay.

>> you heard of the story of youtube etc.
some of the programmers there were standford graduates,
you've heard of paypal! the lead programmer that created the paypal application
core is a russian,
you've heard of intuit(makers of turbo tax, quickbooks) - the core programmer who single handed coded the application was a stanford undergraduate.
what's the point here. stanford, harvard, yale,M.I.T (how come they produce
some of the most innovative minds in software history)
i'll tell you- the students here are not trained in java! or made to take java certifications! they are not taught how to be immediately practical -
they're taught to innovate to the max!! (pragmatic - near-time- usefulness is suspended)
so that they think futuristically ahead of the low scanning majority.
we need more innovators in software.
there are still software's not yet made!!
and tonnes more to maintain.
you mentioned steve wozniak- his singhing intellect propelled apple to the height
of the industry, spawned extreme innovation that eclipsed the competition making them
play catch up - but then steve couldnt care less about an MBA or accounting statements
why! he was sold out to the technical side- how was he deficiency resolved!!
by balancing it out with a guy who could handle the business side.
answer: steve jobs.
point. programmers need to team up - the synergy of two experts complementing each
other has been the secret to success not one trying to play both roles.
infact, read - eric sink , joel of software, the best brains should be given the most
conducive environment to work in. the utter most best.
joel says the programmers have it all set up for them to work in, right down to the chairs they sit on? why?! cuz their brains create the product.
infact the manager in the company mentioned is a dummy like most managers.
they despise programmers and techies and try to coerce them away from their calling!
at microsoft , it is rumoured that the programmers there have executive offices.
at google - technical departments are headed by programmers /technical distinguished engineers.
Its only in nigeria this trash and disdain for programming talent will bubble and its
apparent in this sick replies i see posted here.
please guys grow up.
The nigerian industry is plagued with nonsense mediocre products. and ignoramus managers try to dictate how software should be done all because they got a stinking paper (Mba,msc)
from where?! some ivy league or such.

last example:
heard of xerox . the copier machine manufacturer?
xerox started out a product creatd by a nerd- he was a nerd and that was his nitch.
he had an idea . no marketing/business acumen.
inventor met uber marketer, who help make the copier profitable and appealing.
the inventor could never take the place of the marketer or vice versa.
the worked as a team.
geeks, need to work with a partner who can handle the business side while the
produce the bacon.

the goog thing is he implemented his idea without seeking validation frm any so calld xpert or guru or professor. Only God knows the number of ideas that hav been rejectd by so calld xperts cuz they didnt fit into d conventional mould. Sorry, but ivy league education is over tooted crap here is sombody who saw sth. Millions were blind to. So much for "prestigious mba's" and the attendant stinking snootiness trailing it. Naijans perennial copycats , billionaira website! Yet to find any original web concept from naija just cheap imitation and poor innovation. Some whiteboy has an idea implements it then like lemmings naijans rush to copy and dominate the field!. Wetin do our own brain sef? Ths country sucks.

hmm... Old predictable slew foot at it again hunh? If he cant get u to bend he tries to force u dwn if that's not enuff he tries to kill u. Satan again. In the garden of evil he got man to bend - with cain and abel it was snuff out . With JEsus he first tried to get him to bend (didnt work) so he moved to snuff him out (using the political regime of the time. JESUS WAS TRIED AND SENTENCED AS A POLITICAL CRIMINAL! But to God b the glory Jesus death sealed satan's eternal defeat) AND HERE in iran he's playing the political card again. So so predctably Satan. It always comes to force and threats at the end the day. Boko haram cannot dialog because as satans proteges they must mimic their father, they must kill to make their point. Al qaieda must snuff out lives to send a message. Islam a religion of peace or satan's mouthpiece!?
ProgrammingRe: Your Future As A Software Developer by kambo(m): 8:31pm On Jan 29, 2013
hmm... Thoughtful. I once read some write up sometime ago along the same lines. The essay generatd a flame war wth respondents affirming/disaffirmg tht software dev is a no future occupation. Theyre actually two sides to this issue. One side considers software dev as a calling, and decampment into management as treacherous infidelity. Like the man in your example, management may pay more (and management frwns on older employees still doing "grunt work" aka programming ) but if these folks really had their way programming wud be it. The other side, are more pragmatic, or more enterprenueral . They'll ditch programming for the next big thing (higher pay perks status) . To them its all abt wats in it for me?. Truth is it depends on ones priorities, financial incentives, job prospects, technical depth and so on. In a company that creates mundane typical software in an equally typical industry, that services a blase market innovation and research may b unwelcome the devs there will hav to move over to the busness side to hold down their jobs. This kind of companies are rife. On ther hand, those who work in the truly tech companies can retain and groom their passion with less fear of castigation. But this kinda companies are either elitist old concerns or raring juvenile startups. Think ibm, google, microsoft, fog creek,fb etc. Here industry changing machines are being created. A phd is a must have to work on the most interesting projects. Voracious intelligence and allegiance to the software cult is the currency for earning your colleagues respect. People at this level are self-actualized money aint the primary motivation, actually this bunch dont dream management. They consult, create startups to pursue an interest network with other geeks so they could stay employable or retire into teaching technology. Fact is this sets seem to shrinking and are threatened with extinction cuz as they automate more and more the less tech manpower the industry needs. Their efficient tools is leading to job losses. E.g the efficiency of wordpress and its likes created by uber geeks make professional website creation by novices possible threatening jobs/revenue of professional web designers. Similar trends are occuring in accounting etc. But IMO such companies arent here, naija, and most developers arent on that level here. There's no incentive to aspire so high if there's no industry demanding or appreciating ur skills. Mere "java/c++" programming is hard enuff wt no gaurantee of job security / stability so i guess most people ditch the idealism and go for the career security even if it means retiring from programming!
CareerNIGERIAN CAPITALISM Necessitates Poverty by kambo(op): 2:20am On Jan 29, 2013
Abuja:
sometimes after work hours when passing by certain junctions i see a

flood of people.
They're waitng for transportation to take them home.
home to where?
interesting question.
to the slums.
needless to say - these sets of people who make up the main labour

force of
the city and keep the bulk of the cities industrial machinery

functioning
live in the hinther parts of this artificial metropolis.
Question then is - who lives in the decent parts!
typically the rich! or near rich.
infact, because of the high cost of accomodation in the city,
any thing that looks decent, i dont mean opulent, just decent (read:

not too filthy environent, no paints peeling off the wall stuff. blase

structures )
is rented at exorbitant rates.
With the cost of accomodation out of the sight of the poor man's

binoculars
they've have to go to where it can be affordable.
There's an exception though, those who live in government monitized

buildings.
Now, these sets of people, are the necessary accessories of any

capitalist system.
no doubt.
labour is needed in the conversion process - of resources to products

to revenue.
But why nigerian capitalism to blame for the poverty?
first, these sets of workers give their life for the enterprise they

serve.
what do i mean, they wake at 5am, or 4am to prepare to beat the

pereniall traffic jam,
the work away at their place of employment spending all their prime

time,
then - this is how the poverty trap is created:
they receive PITTANCE WAGES -
taking home pittance wages - they're faced with HIGH AND ESCALATING

COSTS OF LIVING-
oops. SOME BILLS can be avoided , dodged, substituted, postponed but

others cant.
welcome the set of needs called NECESSITIES.
here in the capital city the costs of necessities keeps climbing

higher and higher
a trap and vicious cycle results.
To pay for life's cost they need money.
to get money they go to work,
The work pays them pittance with little increment,
there is barely anything left after living costs has taken its toll.
All workers prime time is used up to service the employer so time for

job hunting is nil,
time for self improvement is also nil,
time flies by.
Rich gets richer cuz they can set prices for the products they sell.
A hotelier can review room rates, and so on.
worker incurs more needs like having children, more school fees etc.
With these trends in place - poverty is inevitable.
in short - most so called rich people who run local or regional

businesses
are doing nothing but hiring slave labour.
And sorry, after a particular age job mobility is impossble so the so

called
worker become tied to the employer l ike a willing slave . the

pittance pay
becomes life support capsules.
Capitalist on the other hand are under pressure and greedy influences

to
pay as little as possible . why, because worker remunerations

constitutes a
cost. the less the better, besides he/she still wants to retain her

position on
some spying index. that index could be forbes or fortune-that's what

the capitalist
mainly lives for.
Exceptions -
there really no exceptions - except those who'll receive bashings if

they underpay.
or those trying to have a more than regional presence. Think banks.
and what proportion of the nations labour pool do the better paying

establishments
absorb? I guess more like 0.0001%.
i mean less than 1%.
what percentage does Government employ? maybe 20% of the labour pool

and government is
a terribly poor payer.
As a matter of fact, the cycle of poverty is such that, it dooms a

particular set of people
perenially to remain poor - because of the haunting needs/ pittance

income dilemma.
Say a worker wants to take the ican exam and needs N1m naira for

training.
he earns N100k/month working as a security gaurd in a hotel.
in 2 years he can bag his educational trophies and move on.
easy. he'll ditch his employer.
but say he earns N30k - which is what the most of these places pay

even less -
that educational dream is gone! in fact he wont even have such

aspirations with
such poor pay.
if cant find better paying job - he's doomed to a cycle of poverty.
like i said they're exceptions but within context the exceptions

better payers
are ultra nitpickers with exhorbitant requirements.
The cropping needs:
children education - education of any decent quality runs into

millions of naira
those of mediocre value easily swallow typical take home income.
note also - the rich own the factors of living!!
so while paying the masses with one hand, they collect double with the

other hand.
perpetuating the poverty cycle.
example:
that school that charges N500k for tuition /yr may pay the security

man (N30k )
>> housing:
if one doesnt want the child to live in a slum he'll need to

shell out(
some 6 - 7 figure amounts)

the list goes on.

Now,in the nigerian context, this is really obtuse - infact the owners

of the factors of living charge such unconscionable prices for their

goods - while paying such
poor salaries that the ration of take home pay to living cost (i mean

barely decent living cost)
is highly negative.

e.g
say the N30k security gaurd salary = 360K take home a year,
is placed against barely decent cost of living of say N3M year.
which means the security gaurd will need to work for 10 years
at the current rate to enjoy some things.
how many 10 year bundles does a typical young worker have?
very few,like 2,3,4.
on the other hand - the cost of living versus salary in western

nations
isnt so high.
another way to look at it.
most of the regular cars sold here in nigeria go for $10K+ to $50K in

the u.s
in that country, a security man like i mentioned can earn $15 - 25k

/year.
so in a year or two his total take home is equal to a new car!

to earn such equivalent salary in nigeria, the average security man

would need
to earn a 6 digit figure! not likely ever. no nigerian capitalist will

allow it
even if he the capitalist earns trillions of dollars a year.
with the situations so in western nations, a security man there can

enjoy the
basic decent necessities of life without needing to bag a degree!
so many of them dont send school!?
but over here to escape the poverty trap people need to earn more

(going via the job route)
and more pay is usually only awarded to the elites in the educational

labour force.

The situation wont change except a serious crack down is made against

slave labour and pittance wages dished out by the rich and their slave

yard factories.
CareerThis Ageism Thing .. by kambo(op): 1:17am On Jan 29, 2013
in a whacked world as nigeria why is there so much unrealistic
criteria for employment.
somebody suffered jamb , got admission school,
thru thick and thin completed a 4/5/6/7 year programme.
As if that wasnt enough the effing school system has to
create criteria for determing brain power,
student doesnt mind they struggle and swot it out.
Through hook or crook some make the grades -
but that's not enough,
in the job market yet more unrealistic and un necessary criteria
has to be set up.
if the classification of intellectual ability into classes is not
enough insult,
at least it is based on an intellectual criteria,
one has to scale thru anoda completely unrelated criteria.
its just that some people have made their marks in their field
already, but if these folks were to seek a job and yet be age X+Y,
they'd be automatically rejected . i mean,
if philip emeagwali , was still a nobody,
and soludo was still a nobody,
and wale soyinka was still a nobody,
and they applied for jobs in "reputable places"
but their age was above the radar! na so they go just
reject them! and recruit sub pars that are not
even up to 1/10 of the gems they cast aside!
man. how optimal/logical are this age based decisions!?

how intellectual is it.
Why are this nation's corporate think-tanks so myopic.
no wonder we've been third world so long those that were
beneath us have long since over taken us.
We've adopted and entrenched stupid silly third world thinking into
our system.

Do employers in western nations discriminate on the basis of age?
i think not.
What does an age X (X is a number the employer likes)
do that an age X+Y (y is an integer (whole number) greater than zero) cannot do?

okay.
This age thing-
By not considering a large pool of people able and willing to work,
their inevitably damning an entire class of people to sub optimal
careers.
Say age X+Y could work in a company that paid 5 times any salary he
could collect otherwise,
he'd use his work experience as leverage to build up his career,
he'll have a successful career but no.
those jobs are for age X.

The age thing is fostering the belief that there's something chronically
wrong with age X+Y bunch!
this is psychological insult on a bunch of hard working and
capable people.
This country is screwed.
So an age X+Y should feel ashamed of nothing else but their age!!
what!!
okay, with no millionaire father and no business acumen,
with an aversion for menial work (which is the option in this country)
most people want the office work (what's wrong with that!?)
they want the corporate work (what's wrong with that?)
they want to work in a cool posh environment (what's wrong with that?)
and they got paper to show (why not let them in?)
but no.
they sell land and assets and bag more papers (man nigerians are hyper educated)
still when the chips are down?! my o my (the yard stick has to
be some mindless unintellectual criteria!?)
what the *4 letter word that doesnt start with f*!!?

So some age X person that qualifies will look down their snooty noses
and age X+ people!? why?
everybody needs a job?
why cant somebody go to school at any age , graduate and
get the same job opportunities as an age X?
why isnt the play field level?
what a *4 letter word that doesnt start with f*
nation this is.

The best opportunities are open only to age Xers!
is the labour force made up only of age xers?!
besides on the priority scale who needs a job more?!
age Xers or age X+Y ers?
cuz the age X+Yers have less working life?!
fact.
But they're the most discriminated against.
Why doesnt the national assembly - with all their
time spent panelbeating this nation straight not
make the age thing illegal?!

why should be looked down/insulted/castigated/
because they're not age Xers!.
why ?!

This is not ideal world.
the so called stewpid requirement setters couldnt forestall
the bank collapses and failures , they forgave themselves,
yet somebdy is held to ransom and rejected for no other reason but
X?!

Why should somebody have to lie about his age!?
to get employment!?
and why should somebody feel special about his age - for employment!>
in ancient britain, when in the industrial age,
they're was a fine blending of work hands of all ages,
13 year old work hands worked along side 40,50 year olds.
what's this senseless move to purge the nigerian work force -
of so called matured folks!?
- this country is driven by retards i tell you.

Why havent the youths of this nations affected adversely by this
policy protested - this inhuman law should be pulled down.
Much in the same way that it is illegal to employ under aged
children in factories in the u.s.

all the arguments for ageism is borne out of whacked minds.
they dont hold and dont follow.
The work place isnt a beauty show- its not about models.
and theyre models of all ages mind you.
its not a sport contest - its not a physicality employment - like
the military and football and sports - those criteria applied to sports dont
apply here.
The old can get along side the new . that's life.
but nigerians reason like moles - the are blind in both eyes.
if high glamour professions like acting , can engage veterans
and youngi's why not work places.
And for crying out loud who are the set of people being snobbed,
youths!!

man . this nations stinks.
when i see those adverts i wanna rain curses down on them.
cuz its so damn wickiedi.
damn this retarded nation and their thnking.
for all their stringency they're yet to even produce a world class
company!!
its no the local level they're so stringent.

If as they say , the thing is done to weed out the many applicants,
can candidates be selected pro rata?!
the number of vacant positions will not change - nobody is asking anybody
to employ more than they need,
just give others a chance . morons!

This nation has no respect for its human resources and you know what?
there's a law that says what you dont value leaves you.
Any wonder there is and will always be a huge brain drain on this nation,
even if the brains dont leave physically, they're hearts aint no more here.
Because some fools decided to reduce human worth and competency to
an unrelated subjective number.

sex tries out the kitty right? 250 mates later experimenter is yet to find the right one. Are u aware that most relationships degrade after and wt sex? Most times it degenerates to a hollow tango whn sex sets in!? And wt often nothng but cheap sex to bond the parties, it dies out after marraige. Many marraiges are facades because the sex aint so sizzling and both parties are more of strangers. It first starts wt sex, then petty arguments, then fights and eventually a breakup ,short periods of fallowness and cussing of the opp. Sex b4 the cycle repeats itself. - i'v witnessed this trends enuff to know its a vain cycle. How many contracted relationships lead to any conclusion i.e marraige (if marraige was the goal) few. But after a breakup what is the womans regret and the man's consolation (sex!). That's why women want some down payment (heavy spending, commitment) from the man as surety. Point is many women want regular sex but under the guise of a relationship. Men want it anyhow. But if the contract were presented so starkly most women will get into moral mode, feign shock and anger and stump out! They want the sleazy package presented in a gift wrap a red ribbon and a scented card with some colored lines of insincere nothingness. It's a 4king fvck world. Gimme my sex u say or i'll shoot u. Its a fvck fvck world and people will have their candy whether God pastor imam mama papa say no.

Much like doing it for the love of doing it rather than for the destination. On the other hand i thnk ths marraige focused b's will put up artificial behavior accelerate their process as if the relationship isnt to continue in marraige. And this behaviours can be so uninspiring, dull dry and fake. Babe go giv 10 watt smile act so polite but at home she's sth else. Fact is nigerians think typically. I dnt think you'll find some1 who shares this sentiments. Attraction and dating for its own sake that is cultivated and nurtured by two and allowed to ripen without a preset date, that can die without parties pulling daggers but rather shrugging it off shaking hands and remaing friends, i can add where there's no pressure to impress with money as if the guy is buying affection etc but this kind relato exists only among teenagers even some late teens think like u-owe-something cuz i laff with you. If he's giving you rules now, u bet more rules will follow and since you will hate being reigned in , friction will b inevitable in the long run. Think divorce no. 3!. Tell him to instead make his relations adjust to you. Your not marrying his mum or grand mum but him. You're not startg a family wt his relations. The bible says man and woman will leave parents (father n mother) to cleave together to become 1 (pardon this if u aint christian). I dont even know any verse that talks abt parental seal of approval 4 marraige. Compatibility shd b btween you and him,cuz that affects the survivability of your marraige. Every other party should conform to ur union not dictate it! Many wives are continually in a triad try to b all things to all groups of people apart from hussy:: mother-in-law, relations etc. If u have a loud mouth let him tell his relations this and let them prepare for this not the othrway round.

i'll run the code on tuesday (2 days hence).
had a nasty experience last time i tried using ubuntu - had to do with documentation - how to perform basic tasks on windows on it like - how to install a new software( this was twisted), how to play music, videos , how to uninstall and the directory structure of ubuntu was un-natural . booting into ubuntu was ugly - i quickly got fed up and switched back to windows problem was the partitioned section of the drive i hosted ubuntu on was invisible to windows! .. linux , unix systems are terribly poorly documented for lay end users.

I couldve quit using windows long ago but both linux distros i installed were terribly hard to use imo, i saw Sudo in ubuntu with no explanation on the meaning. However, theres no denying it this black nation of ours is a cesspool of pride. Stinking pride. FamilyRe: Why Feel Sad That You'r Not Married!? by kambo(op): 7:35am On Jan 25, 2013
theyre some undeniable facts about marraige in the nigerian society. Women esp./men get insulted , no respect, no equal treatment or acess to opportunities, if she not married at or after a certain age. We rarely stop to ask wats the rationale behind this we just believe society is right. So the unmarried is barrage accusingly wt such questions as "why are u not married!?". From the pulpit older singles are preached against, flayed and castigated for not being married. Unmarried folks of a partclar age feel inferior to their married counterparts-thanks to social propaganda. Because marraige is highly rated as an acheivement on its own right, a teenager will dream of gettg married early and havg a big belle . That she is a grandmother @40 is reason to disdain the unmarried contemporary or the one who married "late". A lady of 27 that is not engaged begins to feel desparate! Why!? "all her mates are married!/she's gettg old" when sb gets married society says "now u are a man/woman". An unmarried man/woman is prone to promiscuity etc most marraiges are me-too-istic , if most couples had their way they'd marry later or somebody else but their choice could have angered vested parties so they had to bend over and capitulate. In a bid to meet the imaginary deadline, some folks hav settld for the wrong person. The breasted the tape are deemed outwardly successful but their marraige was an imiscible union from the onset! But u see they just had to get married! To which i say marraige is nice and great if u really find your right choice but if not dont and time isnt on your side dont beat urself up .there is more to a fulfilling life than getting hooked up!

FamilyWhy Feel Sad That You'r Not Married!? by kambo(op): 4:19am On Jan 23, 2013
[moderator re-valuate where to put this post: rommance/religion.
thank you.]

in an ideal world - everything we want would happen.
money riches marraige would come easy and on time.
But when it doesnt come - wahala dey.

Women especially get worried.
Men get worried too.
Women get desperate and over reach.
they become the pursuers rather than the pursued.
People ask questions like "why are you not married?" accusingly.

i do wonder why so.
here are my points on why i think it dont matter.

spouses are not sold in shops.
-------------------------------------

you just cant go out and pick a husband or wife the way
you go out and buy a pet - it takes time to relate with ,
and find out if the person it the right one for you -
it takes a long time for people to show their true colors
for one to make an accept/reject decision.
And some are expert chameleons they'll hide their
nastiness until they get what the want.

2.) marraige, typically, is not as exciting as people make it

i dont know any couples that are all smiles from day to day.
over time they treat each other like just another person.
the specialty and flavour goes.
it becomes as mundane as any other relationship .
Though some outwardly make a big deal of it - but
i've nver seen close hand any romantic flame burning
in any long time relationship. things just seem to
chug along.
or to put it another way- at the onset the couple paddle
furiously with oars but as time goes on they pack the oars
and the boat floats by the force of the currents-no spark no
fire!!
( i maybe wrong! - but this is the norm)
The woman finds solace in her children (who are full grown or on their own)
the man -- hangs around for sex and a steady help .
marraiges kinda loose their elasticity over time!
just like human skin. But these need not be your portion-
just reporting what i know.
if you want something better work at it - soup wey sweet...

3.) in the long run it doesnt matter?
Long run here means when your life is over!
i know this is untypical thinking.
but nobody is known for being married..
if you feel sad that people are talking that at age X your not
married , remember that when you do get married people
will not give corresponding notice to the event,
your being married will be as exciting as saying
that the newspaper man sells magazines too!!
so why bother!!
if people do notice - its to criticize and judge -
e.g if the man is really above the typical age by say 20years+
then people will talk!?
he got married at this age!!" - they'll shrug their shoulders
in disgust!
that's society for you.
Instead of celebrating that at last he got married ,theyre
complaining.
when your life is over-you'll be mainly recognize for your
achievements and only those acheivements that impacted on others (good/bad).
your life is important to people only to the extend that your life impacted them.

4.) In retrospect, there was nothing worth worrying ,fighting about.

i'm writing here from the perspective of the the married folks.
i think after they've settled into a marraige they were frantic about, if they had to do it all over again they
wouldnt break their neck to marry in record time or advocate
worry.

5.) you can only do your best that is all you can do.

it reminds me of an athletic event, the winner isnt known,
but whether an athlete wins or not all the athlete can
control is his training. and within the time
alloted for the training.
after that - it's all over.

6.) there's more to life than getting married

In a society like ours - this statement will get one
flames but this society is a myopic one.
the summary of many peoples lives is that -
they got married had kids spent the next 30 years
raising the kids and died off.
So people's expectation and life revolve around
fulfilling this hyper exciting role!
they think it is a calling.
More to life here means you can live a much much much richer
life without being married!!
singleness is not a curse and will never be!

7.) The period of singleness is a gift

Oh!! i dont know how much people have been told they're
a shame and stigma because they're not married.
The time you have as a single man/woman is a block
of time that you'll never have again forever.
free time+youth(great gift)
most people will abuse this period-
the wise ones will use it to develop themselves fully
into the person they could be and grow into their full
potentials so that when they eventually hook up they
will come into the marraige with something to offer!!
Think of a woman who didnt use her single period to learn
how to cook!? - is it during honey moon she'll learn!
think of a woman who never developed a love for reading
, when she starts raising children what gift will she impart
a love for reading to them?
.
more singleness is even a greater gift - i know i'm stepping
on toes - but c'mon.
someone who is sad at being single is saying in other words
that his/her happiness lies in the hands of another human!.
There is always so much to do! i dont mean frivolous
fun but there is so much work to be done - more hands on deck.

8.) you could live a decent life and be an example

in that period of singleness- most women go beserk
and throw their values to the wind - c'mon co-habitation
is the norm to hook the man.
Most who wouldnt give sex before relax their morales to keep the man.
lucky,men- they chew the meat, spit out the bones then call "next".
some cry every day they keep a good posture outside but
cry everyday at night-wet their pillows with tears!
boo cry baby grow up.
if a person said ok , i want to marry but the marraige aint
coming, i'll keep my dignity and not co habit,
i wont become desperate for the man ,
and i wont lower my standard for the man,
i'll maintain my dignity come what may.
if they pull it of - come marraige or no marraige -
they'll be sending a strong message that will send help
many and shut the mouth of many.
a woman has got to develop the resoluteness of a suicide
bomber! stick to your ideals dont let society push you around. no!

9.) Good things take time -
i'm not advocating celibacy or singleness here -
but just saying if it dont come dont worry your heart out.
even if it dont come for all of life dont worry. live out your life and enjoy your days.
but while hoping and wishing-- aiming for the best-
know good things do take time.
you may have to sample lots of relationships to decide on
the one- dont get desperate and jump into any joe/anna's arms.
it all takes time.

10.) you're life is nobody's business

I think the shame in not getting married on time,
stems from the fact that the shame is externally generated!!
from society.
some posts are not available to un married people.
e.g
Governorship, presidency, etc.
But I believe some people are better of being single.
some people love solitude, dont connect well with
anybody,
and find social situations burdensome.
why can't these folks live their lives!!
why can't they just be!!
outside they look odd but inside they are live a fully
satisfied life.
some notable scientists and mathematicians were single:
they just couldnt accomodate the baggage of a spouse and
kids into their lives!
you'll say they were lonely but loneliness was not in their
lives.. they lived their lives to the fullest and acheived
their full potentials.
some people's potentials were cut off after marraige!
they could advanced into the person they wanted to be! because
of an influencing spouse - who was insecure or domineering.

Society in 3rd world countries is usually as mentally advanced
as their economies.
Singleness should be recognized and respected and accepted-
there's nothing abberant about it.
People should be given the right to enjoy full career priviledges and respect without having an acronym before their
names! its so foolish and idiotic
to insult a hard working staff because she's age X and single.
that's stupid! - does marraige confer sainthood on a person?

11.)
If some people had their way, they would nt have gotten married

some of the worst kinds of human abuse have been perpetrated
by spouse to spouse. verbal and physical insults and wounds
have been the romantic touches most people have meted out to
each other.
some have been whores, misers, tyrants in the marital home.
is this what some many rush into in the name of wearing a ring and answering a title?
mess society and its conventions - its not worth it.
But this is looking on the bad side - when its good its better than being single by exponential degrees. but that is when it is good.

think of these example,
a man beats wife to death!! ehn! it has happened m any times.
but when that woman was getting married she had met the society's criteria for respectability if she could turn back
time would she be so hasty to rush into the marraige just
to please some amorphous society?!
wife baths husband with acid - because she suspected that
he was calling his girl friend.
wife denies husband sex! - sex now becomes a power bargaining tool. prostitution in the home.
wife and husband dont agree on money- they both hide their
bank account information from each other!
perennial nagging - huh - its another thing when one was managing his life on his own but to come home to the
a nagging spouse is hell not bliss.
A life time of insults,abuse,bashings.
some people had the happiest days in their lives BEFORE they
got married after marraige they met a monster-
INSULT AFTER INSULT AFTER CONTEMPT AND DISRESPECT for all
their marraige years - worth it?!
MARRAIGE TO A secretive person. this one is pathetic-
they never open up or reveal themselves to you.
you have to prod and prod to pry information from them-
worth the endurance in the name of marraige!?
sometimes , life would have been better off in singlehood
than spousehood (marraige).

commercialize? (a question not a suggestion) full blown ? - your app is showing features of evolution. More features are being added/requested And your talking of sponsors. Doesnt that mean you're intent on a feature rich product!? If you get sponsorship a full blown product will b xpcted not a utility. If u giv a utility users will keep asking 4 feature x y z until unwittingly uv created a full product! The user asking for x y z could b u!

interesting.. I actually worked on a file manager like application sometime last year circa. July/August but abandoned the code base to pursue other competing engagements. Code is in java and has 40+ classes. I dont know when i'll return to it. I mention it cuz i see the interest you project has garnered . Good luck. Keep up the good work. Actually, i think a comprehensive file utility has been sore lacking in OSes. But are u planning on commercializing it when done? Can't contribute cuz i'm not into c++ (bad experience wth the compilers i've encountered: mingw output mb's of code for very small programs i write . Etc. So till i lay hands on a good windows compiler no c++ for now). Here are some functions that would be nice to have. Find+(fileAction) - where fileaction== copy, delete, move, count, synchronize synchronize by criteria (date, size etc) like when a textfile has more than two copies and user wants to bring them up to date by replacing smaller file with larger file . Resumable copy - e.g after an interruption in copying a folder copied files are not recopied. Folder sorter- think you've already handled this, periodicity: idea here is to make an operation run at scheduled intervals e.g every 1hr, 30mins . Useful when lotta disc state changing activity is going on e.g during internet download sessions .periodic find+delete could serve as a crude antivirus. There more ideas but i'll stop here.
