I think the title of the post should be on what type of maths a software
developer needs to learn to excel in this field.
after a while learning "how to use" a language becomes boring.
curiosity to know more about being a "client user" bites- you now want
to dig deeper under the hood of your language and tinker a bit , but
the ignorance of mathematics is a barrier.
Then, its not really about the tool - the language - but rather the software you want to make.
like using a pen - has nothing to do with what you can write- its not about the pen then,its about your writing skills.

-- some people think its easy ( cuz they see u typing at the machine )
to them its just typing , they can do it - especially if they're the
type who think their work is harder.
others think is hard:
-- tried to program once (almost bust a vein their head)
talk of software and you get different opinions.
the question makes sense.

what do non-programmers think of u?!

some misconceptions.

1.) that you can programme anything?!

they gape when you tell them you can't (if u ever tell them so)
some think software is written overnight

2.) they think programming is "easy"
- is it not "only" programming.

3.) they think they could have done a better job than what you did?



4.) they think programming is hard - very hard like mathematics.
- actually this is not relatively true in the sense of how to learn a language not in the sense of the problem you want to use the language
to solve. some languages are ,admittedly terribly cryptic,but such languages are fast losing out to mor readable ones.

5.) they think you did everything!!
when most of your code was calling sb elses code. API's here.

6.) they think software comes with the computer or should cheap because they download it for free on the net.

7.) they think large software should come in large media!
stark users here.
[and you showing them just a cd!]
they wonder if a pdf book will 'enter' a cd or flash drive.

8.) some think programming means knowing how to use ms word or excel or softwares on a computer.

9.) some think programming is a low brain work - for artisans in the class of work for - hairdressers,tailors,carpenters, tellers etc.
this view is typically held by academically advanced people.


10.) they think your software may not work well if it doesnt look
well. like what they get internationally.

11.) they think all software should be very cheap -
like at the price pirates sell to them.
they're unfazed with laptop prices but not with software prices.

the whole OOP thing is about Objects and u can't operate on group of Objects
without Collections (data structures ) so its fundamental learning - though most platforms come with sophistaced data structure libraries.
at least KNOW the basics. write a stack,write a linked list,write a hashtable, write trees , learn what makes trees desirable (fast insertion,fast deletion etc) learn what makes them undesirable ( complex to write - for newbies just starting out )
infact. learning about trees alone - one can understand how xml,xslt parsers are written! again, this is for hobby programmers i'm talking about . the computer science aspects can be very ugly - lots of maths ,jargons - and i'm not university trained or formally taught so my advice is from the DIY - do it yourself - route.

for those who want the christian view on this thing. here is it.
this whole thing makes the ranting of atheist nothing - cuz in a negative way
the word of God is validated by cultists.

the whole soul travel thing and spiritual world intercourse i.e mystical activities is again, born out of man's rebellious nature - To try to gain more power, do more things, know more OUTSIDE of submitting to God who made heaven and earth.
I'd submit to you, that any one who dabbles into this kind of things know that atheists and agnostics are some of the most deluded and blinded souls on earth.
and in a later form the will know that GOD is really real. i.e the God of the bible.

on the other hand - get ur head banging on some data s - data structures. knowing this singular topic alone will get you writing more intelligent programmes - this is where i almost threw deitels book into the gutter . and most books on data s are too theoretical or too shallow.
on the basics - take time to learn how to - write most of the data s - u use. it will build character in you.

many people pick up the deitels java how to program book?
why? cuz every beginner is recommending it and that's what the market got. for serious programming - try - Learning java for a change.
its not as bulky as the deitels - which is so cuz of the prize tag ,more pages more dollars - try java in 24 hours for the absolute newbie.
question to ask yourself is - how much can a beginner know to recommend a book on programming for me?! deitels are bad. they're one highly touted dry book. but don't get me wrong - they'll get you thru the basics. then, mess you up. i was there as a beginner and if only i got a hold of 'learning java' don't make the mistake i made.
stay away from 'thnking in java' if you are absolutely virgin in this things. it will screw you up - but when u a bit mature - its cool.

i've conversant with one programming language- java.
and i'm wondering if i need to be scj+(anoda alphabet)
to make a good living or if i can tell employer "i can programme"
and get a job.
i hate exams and well,i don't like selling so if i want
to do this thing- i need a fat paycheck.
so please tell me which certification points to the gold mine.
need to scoop some for me and my peeps.
my only certification is presently - ebooks + lots of outflow to
related expenses.

sin is a serious issue in every society- whether you are religious or not? its a huge problem. The bible says that - man has a sinful nature and to cure the problem of sin that nature has to be taken off and replace by a new nature. the bible says sin leads to spiritual death.

modern society says: man can be trained to not sin by obeying the law but so far all form of penal punishments has not curbed sin in society - u can read of greedy politicians looting the treasury, legalisation of prostitution etc. it all goes to show man doesnt have the POWER in himself to make himself PURE.

the need for a saviour - GOD took mans place and died for him and for all that accept him ,HE gives the POWER to become a child of GOD and power over SIN.
SO the crux of the matter is that man needs a saviour and power over sin.
it is because of sin that BLOOD was shed in the old testament bu in the old testament the blood shed ,the blood of bulls and rams , COVERED sin .
the sacrifice of a lamb POINTED to the perfect SACRIFICE foretold to TAKE AWAY mankinds sin.
so christianity is a SOLUTION to a PRACTICAL problem. have you seen the effect of sin in society. YOU DON'T NEED TO BELieve in God to feel the impact of sin.
people dying from taking fake drugs
people killed by kidnappers
people killed by dictators
pain from adulterous spouses
people unknowingly infected with hiv aids
living in a country where elections are rigged
living in a country where there is no electricity
being the victim of racism
this things should be. GOD SET RULES for living ,so that this things shouldnt be.
e.g THOU SHALL NOT KILL ,
but the rules God set could not be obeyed by man.
THE BIBLE says man couldnt obey them because of THE SINFUL NATURE IN MAN.
the sinful nature is like an entity in man that makes man SIN.
the BIBLE SAID God did this to show man - how terrible sin is.
and the wages of sin is death.
so man needs a saviour.
what does your religion say about the salvation of man's soul from sin?
man can't save himself.

i don't want to write much. but if christianity is a false religion then scoff at the claims it makes:
1.) God and man have been reconciled thru the death of Jesus- its all up to you and anyone to accept the salvation provided by Christ death
2.) so anyone who doesnt accept that salvation makes a choice to remain in spiritual death and as such will end in everlasting torment- if christianity is a farce- then the warning about hell fire is a joke.
3.) coming world events:
the rapture -
the unification of world powers leading to one world religion and one world currency
(this will temporarily make the resources of some nations evenly distributed ,rich usa or europe subsidizes poor africa)
4.) the judgement - every living soul will appear before the judgement seat of christ.

again, if these events are false then christianity as a religion is thought up.

Not to discourage you but wouldnt you be more useful being a certified accountant
and a core programmer ?
that way you can contribute software services to accountant i.e be a player in two fields.
Accounting software industry is very large and lucrative but most programmers
can't grasp accounting but accountants would feel at home with a fellow who talks
their language- solid business grasp with an I.T edge.
but just my contribution

I should add here that life is graver than the we make of it.

how would u process an array with a zero subscript element using a for loop?

this worked:
int x=0;
for(x=0;x<10{
x++;
System.out.println(x);

}

the print out start from 1 but exceeds 10 before it stops.

or u could try this:
for(int x=0;x<9{
System.out.println(++x);
}
subscript exits at 10.
so u get it?
skip implementing the third part of the loop signature.
rather increment x within the loop 'body' i.e between the {}

i've not tested this yet
but i think maybe code could be different if u tried this:


for(int i=0;i<10;++i){

System.out.println(i);

}

typing from a public pc tell me if it gives u what u want.

u'll need more than one book to learn 1 programming language from . many books balance ur perspectives.
personally, i find the deitel book to be excessively verbose and this is not un-deliberate.
a 1500 pg book on programming ( u can use it for pumping ur biceps in the morning) is more convincing than a 400 or 300 pg manual which is what u need.
Try this book by herbet schildt - Java 2 the complete reference . it blows the deitels to bits.
[at last price - cms bookshp it was 12k ].
