hello funky and co ur not getting my point . I m not advocating unionism it will stiffle innovation i'm advocating long sitedness . If u charge 10k for a website the market will force this expectation on most developers and most would want a site like nairaland (sth as complex as this ) for at most 50k no thanks to you developers that charged cheap. But if you churn out 100 jobs a month (i doubt!) if you like you can charge 10k because the total sum is large. Its the same as if one person paid you 1m/month. This is the approach blackberry microsoft uac dangote nokia use they sell cheap but rake in Billions. If ur a developer not working on such scale ur price can damn you perpetually. So that 5years from now ur still grovelling because u live on pittance. To illustrate, Mcdonalds was run by 2 brothers they charged "10k" , metaphorically,per burger and sold to their community dooming themselves to perennial smalltime . Enter uber marketter Ray , he knew the price was set and didnt try to change it . What he did was Sell to many at that small price thereby raking in Billions. Most of this 10k guys cant give clients job quotes N500k because theyve been thinking in 10 - 30k range for too long. This is what i'm attacking its hurting you and killing the prestige of the field. Have you noticed that web design is regarded as a poverty "alleviation" field! Why isnt software engineering accounting law regarded as such! If you design a site you:: use a machine, use transportation, pay rent , pay electricity bills, use your health, strain your eyes and wrist, pay call cost , incur internet cost, and need to make a profit . Do your charges meet these cost? Moreover your market share is shrinking because the every secondary school kid and unemployed is jumping in too. Re educate the 10k client to know that a website is their international identity so they shold pay well for it-if they can tote a blackberry they can afford a few thousands. A union can fix this malady but i'm not advocating it. All i'm saying is be more professional dont slave on 50 websites a year to make 500k (baboon work) when you could earn the same at less effort. We are not cheap asian sweat shop labourers .

If it is not free then answer my next question- if the company employs developers how do they pay per annum? How many copies of the software is sold per year and at what price? FYI softgiants like microsoft have been able to survive and expand their product line because they charge well. They billions of dollars in cash that they can create a search engine to rival google. They pay their developers up to 500k usd and they attract the best talent , would b more productive with 5k dollars /year or 50k dollars? Life is not survival but thriving . so much bashing against mtn! I use mtn 4 night browsing and its very ok. Very reliable. I've lost money money when they switched to per kb after 6am. But compared to glo i was using i'll say mtn was a welcome relief. Glo network was highly erratic. Mtn also has the cheapest night browsing plan @ N833 / Gig no other i know comes close. Multilinks could @ 3500 /20g night but theyre dead where i b at and their quality of service is unverifiable to me. Etisalat is more expensive for calls cuz i made a call to a landline with both networks and etisalat was quick to tell me my tank is empty. Lastly i had a nasty experience talking with an abrupt and snappy etisalat customer care rep. I've never such on mtn . Left a bad taste,as it should, to be dished such ugliness from sb who should have been a professional. From my past experience though glo had the most instant customer care no long waits to get served.

i understand and sympathize with the poster's view point. As a matter of fact the prize should be set to much higher amounts because it will command respect from clients . In the corporate world low prices are only offered because the buyers number in millions. If microsoft can charge 5k dollars for a software why shouldnt a professional charge well. i wrote "hello work" in 2005 , and i've been coding ever since. On the sidelines never commercially never for money but fact be that the years have passed like a week rather than like stretches! I am an intermediate programmer to advanced (in some aspects) but my code size for most of my projects is usually btw 1k+ to 2k+ very few exceed 3k. I write software i use. I never run out of something to code so i am always busy. The issue now is typical popular software contain lines of codes in the tens of thousands. Wordpress has i think 70k+ lines of php code alone, phpbb has 100k+ lines, ant 70k+, when i use this apps i always wonder what they put inside to make them so big cuz the 'core' of my app seems to level of at a small size. At the interview i'll b selling myself thru my works but i'm wondering if the general notion of software is 10k * n + v lines of code where n is a variable greater than 0 and v is less than 1000. I'd need to know the expectation in commercial software world. P.s : The lines of code i mentioned are for the 'core' i.e the model not including gui or input (boring stuff). ((I've suffered usual setbacks like lockouts from nepa outage, no productivity when i travelled earlier years when i had no laptop etc ).I became interested in my l.o.c after i wrote a counter utility with file type filtering capability, that's how i counted the wordpress, ant , phpbb and others. Java se has 6M+ l.o.c. I lose interest and concentration falters after coding for a month!!. The interviewer called me and we spoke for about 10 minutes but i want to know what expectations code and size wise will b for some1 with my span of experience dont wanna come across as unserious or inept.

i'd say programming is way harder. the only comparison i'd make to programming would be esoteric physics or rigorous mathematics.
with programming - the programmer takes an idea - often with no idea how to solve it,
solves it in the abstract ,decomposes it to its components, maybe using physical diagrams and schemas. using mental tools like mathematics and logic .
proves that the logic is correct so that the programs do what their suppose to do,
then codes it in a programming language , works to remove all bugs.
what a user may take to b a simple software may cost several thousands of lines of code. every line is a logical argument that builds up on other logical arguments like a block in a house ,all must be true else the program may fail. guys- programming aint for dummies.its really challenging- though some folks settle for the trivial sides.
think, how many medical doctors can understand the components of a complex system like an operating system? they assume this things just come with the computer or grows like weed
