Sincere 9gerian: With all due respect to the writer of above article, it would appear he set out on a FAULT-FINDING mission and to ridicule the govt. Definitely, anyone who set out to find faults will definitely find faults. Just some quotes from the article to buttress my point. The writer, even before embarking on the train ride, wrote:
"I have read so many false claims by the government and based on this some misinformation without any corresponding reality when investigated"

I will not be surprised if a writer that started off with such biased mindset exagerates and garnishes a bad experience on the train to suite his predetermined goals.

The after the train ride, the writer stated:
"If a minister of the federal republic is so proud to call this torture an achievement, I think the minister needs to be checked. I pray one day, the president and the minister would have to board the train and enjoy their transformation as enjoyed by the citizen. Based on my experience on the brute railway, I can conclude that the railway is an one of Nigeria's latest affliction bythe federal government, which is afflicting or causing pain and miseries to the people.....but after the government had claimed to spend so much money on the railway, this hell is what can be presented as a result"

A fair minded person would not have arrived at the above conclusions after just one train ride. But I'm not surprised considering the fact that the writer had predetermined goals.

Anyway, it is clear even from pictures from some of our national dailies that the trains in SOME routes are usually overloaded. But the story of sleeping at a train station, IF TRUE, should be an isolated event, possibly due to mechanical fault of the train. If the commuters COMMONLY sleep at train stations, I DOUBT if people will still be trooping to train stations. May be by now, the trains would have been running EMPTY.

Poor services by low cadre NRC workers has always been an issue. The top management of the corporation should find away to amelorate the situation.

However, these issues takes nothing away from the transformation going on the railway sector.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika

A group of concerned Nigerians at the weekend alleged high-level plot by some elements to blackmail and distract the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, from the renewed fight against terrorism in the country. 

The group alleged that some disgruntled elements who are not comfortable with the level of re-engineering in the Army by the Ihejirika now accused him of lopsidedness in the recruitment and posting of Army personnel. 

A faceless group was quoted to have recently accused the Army Chief  of  favouring the Igbos in his  recruitment and appointments in the army.
But the a group under the umbrella of ‘Information for Democracy Development (IDD), in a statement made available to journalists yesterday in Abuja, dismissed the allegation as another plot to distract the Army Chief and mislead the general public on the  happenings in the army.

The IDD, in the statement signed by its national coordinator, Mr Joshua Yahaya, described those behind the attack as  ‘fifth columnists of Boko Haram who are presently feeling the heat of the war against them by the army and so feel that the only way out is to create disaffection within the army itself.

“They may as well be people who have twisted the fact for to mislead members of the public and distract government in the fight against terrorism. Or why is it now that insurgents are at their tether’s end that this propaganda is surfacing? The allegations of nepotism against Lt General Ihejirika, coming at this time, are indeed diabolic and a calculated attempt to distract the army leadership from its laudable counter-terrorism campaigns which have already started bearing fruits to the praise of all patriotic Nigerians and the international community.

“We feel, therefore, as patriots to rise to the defense of the army under the present leadership even though we know that the Army Chief  is perfectly capable of putting up a better rebuttal himself.  We believe that the Nigeria Army of today follows guidelines in its recruitment and promotion. Apart from the principles of quota and federal character, we believe that the army being a professional body must insist on certain minimum qualifications. For example, although we are desirous to build an equitable institution, we needn’t sacrifice merit on the altar of expediency.

  “In the past we heard of some areas presenting illiterate truck pushers and itinerant shoe-shiners for recruitment all in the name of filling quotas. This practice had been to the detriment of professionalism.

“Lopsidedness in access to public organisations in Nigeria many of the times reflect the lopsidedness in educational attainment by the various zones same as it is reflected in public school enrollment annually.  Once ineligible candidates are presented at recruitment points they are screened out not because of their tribe or religion but simply because they do not have the required minimum qualification.  In building a virile army, tribe and religion should count for naught beyond the requirement for equitable spread. This has been the reason why some states which did not present qualified candidates lagged behind and not because they were discriminated as the authors of the deceitful and malicious publication tried to portray.”

LAGOS — The Lagos State Command of the State Security Service, SSS, has arrested two suspected fraudsters who have been masquerading as Directors with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians and foreigners.

One of the suspects, Azeez Bello,was discovered to have  contested for the Kogi Central senatorial seat in the 2011 general elections, on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

Bello, said to have impersonated the EFCC Director of Operations, Mr E.A  Adegbite, in his confessional statement, reportedly admitted to have  collaborated with one Nelson Ndukwe and one Chief Okafor, currently on the run, to defraud the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs Mercy Orji, pretending to be investigating her on trump-up financial offences.

Parading the suspects, yesterday, Director, SSS, Mr. Ben Achu-Olayi, said: “Acting on intelligence report received from Abia State that one suspected fraudster was impersonating Adegbite to defraud the first lady, we trailed and successfully tracked and arrested him at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.”

He further explained that his partner in crime, one Uche Onwuka, on his part, lured a Nigerian based in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates to the country, to invest in a $7 million real estate belonging to business mogul, Mike Adenuga.

On arriving the country, their client identified as Livinus Yakubu, was  reportedly urged by Uche to bring $30,000 for them to purchase chemical with which to wash and print some materials into currencies.

The twist in the supposed business proposal, according to the Director, SSS, Mr. Ben Achu-Olayi, arouse Yakubu’s suspicion, following which he reported to SSS on January 7, 2013.

Achu-Olayi  explained that  Yakubu was encouraged to play along, while his men placed surveillance on him. The suspects, he said, were arrested around Camelot Hotel in Victoria Island, at the verge of collecting part payment for the purchase of the chemical to wash the dollars.

During a search at the suspect’s hotel room at Travel House Hotel, Ajah, Achu-Olayi disclosed that 12 fake internet super-imposed pictures of the  suspect in the midst of eminent  Nigerians and documents purportedly signed by President Goodluck Jonathan, were discovered.

He said: “The suspect had several fake internet super-imposed pictures with different highly placed personalities like the late president, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua; former president Olusegun Obasanjo and business mogul, Aliko Dangote among others.

“The worst is that the suspect super-imposed several pictures where he was with President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential office. He portrayed himself as a member of the inner-caucus or kitchen cabinet of the president and close ally of prominent business moguls in the country. He has used such gimmicks to lure his victims.”

Warning Nigerians to be wary of the likes of Uche and Bello, Achu-Olayi said the latter would  be handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and subsequently charged to court.

THE need to regain the control of the party structure, his hold on the government by giving political patronage to his supporters, it has been revealed, are some of the real reasons behind the recurrent attacks launched against  the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Sunday Tribune exclusively learnt that the ongoing undercurrent war between the former president and his protege was fuelled largely by what some leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West called the insatiable urge of the former president to control the machinery of government, even after being granted the privilege to nominate some key member of the present administration, which, it was said, he tactically used to deny the South-West region of the expected share in government positions.

Sources revealed to Sunday Tribune that President Jonathan gave his benefactor the honour to nominate his “people” into the cabinet.

The former president, it was stated, brought in some of his men in the guise of their being “technocrats” which did not go down well with some party elders, especially in the South-West.

The South-West elders, many of who worked hard to ensure the victory of President Jonathan in the 2011 elections, felt  short-changed as the positions that should have been reserved for them were said to have been cornered by the former president’s men. A situation that has given rise to the shout of marginalisation in the South-West.

“You cannot blame the president for the marginalisation of the South-West; blame Baba for it,” a powerful PDP chieftain told Sunday Tribune.

“Even when the position of Federal Civil Service Commission became vacant, an important position which has always been occupied by the North, the president gave it to South-West.

But rather than allowing a person with the requisite experience to man the position,  Baba again took it upon himself. He single-handedly nominated a woman to fill the position. There are many other such instances,” narrated the source, who also cited the Speaker of the House of Representatives post zoned to the South-West, which was supposed to be overseen by the former president, but was later hijacked by elements in the opposition with support from PDP members.

Even on the issue of Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) nominations, it was claimed that Baba wielded his influence, such that it almost created a big problem in his home state, Ogun.

“Those who had been pencilled in were removed on supposedly  the orders of Baba, before the president waded in.

“That is the situation. Now, the president wants to be his own man. He has started building bridges of communication, because he realised that there is a disconnect between the governed and those expected to be representing them in  government, especially against the background that his own men are working hard and are being applauded by the people.

“That is the major thrust of the conflict. The president will forever be grateful to Baba. But he should just allow the man to work and not continue to distract him,” the source said, adding that efforts were ongoing to rebuild the cracked PDP machinery in all the states of the federation and that the president’s men were ready confront some cronies of the former president.

They claimed the former Minister of Ediucation, Oby Ezekwesili, was acting on the orders of the former president by launching a tirade against the government.

Accordingly, it was disclosed that the president was not indisposed to the idea of compensating the South-West for the glaring marginalisation of the region is currently suffering in the scheme of things.

“Plans are ongoing to redress the imbalance,” said another source.

“We are positive that something would be done on it,” he said, adding that the former president’s attitude had helped to isolate many key PDP members in the country.

US electric company, General Electric (GE) and Nigeria’s Geometric Power Limited, have signed a joint development agreement for the building of a 450 Mega Watts power plant in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State at a cost of $500 million.

The agreement which was signed in Abuja on Thursday, by the chief executive officers of the two companies, states that the 450 megawatts power plant will be completed in three years.

The chief executive of Geometric, Professor Barth Nnaji, who was Nigeria’s former Minister of Power, described the agreement as a demonstration of GE’s commitment to working with local players in growing Nigeria’s power sector.

By this agreement, GE is initiating a full realisation of its plan to work with Nigerian companies in building up to 10,000 MW of power in Nigeria.

The CEO of GE, Me Jeff Immelt, was present at the event and signed on behalf of the company.

Geometric Power Limited, a pioneer private sector provider of electricity in Nigeria has completed several major power projects in the country, including the 140 MW power plant also in Aba. This has reportedly improved the electricity distribution network with new substations and power lines to the commercial city.

Professor Nnaji noted that the focus remains power development and investment in projects that have economic and social value within communities.

For the full realisation of this project, the team will employ GE technologies and the project is expected to be the first of other power projects to be jointly developed by GE and Geometric Power Limited.

An Abuja High Court has dismissed the objections filed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu  Tambuwal and the former chairman, House Ad hoc Committee on fuel subsidy probe,  Farouk Lawan, seeking to dismiss a suit by Mr. Femi Otedola, seeking N250 billion in damages against the officers.

Otedola had asked the court to award him the said damages on the grounds that he  was harassed and intimidated by the defendants and that he also suffered business losses as a result of the harassment.

Rather than dismiss the case, the trial judge,  Justice Peter Kekemeke, ordered Tambuwal and Lawan  to file their defence immediately.

Otedola had sued the two lawmakers claiming the sum of N250 billion as general and exemplary damages for acts of intimidation, harassment loss of goodwill, patronages, oppressive and arbitrary actions carried against him by the two defendants while allegedly demanding for $3 million bribe.

The  businessman is also challenging the move by the two lawmakers to re-enlist his company among the indicted companies for subsidy scam by the Lawan committee. 

Tambuwal and Lawan had objected to the hearing of Otedola's case on the ground that they were protected by legislative immunity and, therefore, cannot be taken to court for either civil or criminal matters on any of their actions on the floor of the House.

They asked the court to dismiss the suit for being too hasty because the House had not adopted the report on the subsidy probe and that there had been no White Paper yet on it.

The two defendants also contended that being agents of the House, they could only be sued at a Federal High Court because the House was an organ of the Federal Government and as such no Abuja High Court had jurisdiction on the suit.

In the objections argued by Chief Mike Ahamba (SAN) for Tambuwal and Kehinde Ogunwumiju for Lawan, the counsel claimed that Otedola freely gave out the bribe and could not  turn around to allege harassment and intimidation against himself.

Besides, the lawmakers said Otedola's case was not sustainable since he did not join the National Assembly and Clerk of the National Assembly as defendants.

But in his ruling, Justice Kekemeke upheld the submission of Chief Babajide Koku (SAN), counsel to Otedola, holding  that Tambuwal and Lawan could not  use legislative immunity as escape route to shield themselves from legal action for wrongful acts carried against the plaintiff  outside the confinement of the House.

The judge agreed with Koku that it was not part of the terms of reference of Lawan's committee to source for bribe from anybody and as such could not hide under the immunity conferred on them while on the floor of the House to void the case.

Justice Kekemeke also refused to void the suit on the claim of being in a wrong court adding that the complaints of Otedola were against alleged harassment, intimidation and acts of arbitrariness by the defendants while demanding for $3 million and not an attack on the Federal Government revenue or any of its agency which would have made it a case for a Federal High Court.

• S’Court rejects EFCC’s appeal in Ibori’s case

THE Federal Government Thursday finally filed a seven-count charge against the former House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee Chairman on fuel subsidy regime, Farouk Lawan and his alleged accomplice Boniface Emenalo at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

Besides, the Supreme Court Thursday threw out an appeal filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori on the grounds that the assignment of cases was purely an administrative matter.

While striking out the appeal, Justice Mahmud Mohammed said that the appeal had become a mere academic exercise and therefore of no consequence.

Lawan and Emenalo are alleged to have sometime in April 2012 or thereabout in Abuja within the FCT under the jurisdiction of the court while acting in the course of their official duties as chairman and secretary respectively of House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on monitoring of fuel subsidy regime conspired between themselves and with each other to corruptly obtain $3 million from Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited.

The charge continued that this amount was an inducement to remove the name of Zenon from the committee’s report and did cause the House of Representatives to remove same from the said list and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 26(1)(C) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. The charge said the offence was punishable under Section 8 (1) of the same Act.

According to the prosecutor, Mrs. O.O. Fatunde who is also the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lawan who has four of the seven-count charge also corruptly obtained $500,000 from Otedola as an inducement to remove the name of Zenon from the report. She said that the offence was contrary to Section 17 (1) (a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and punishable under Section 17 (1) of the same Act.

In the fifth count charge, Emenalo was alleged to have corruptly asked for $3 million from Otedola to remove the name of his company from the list of companies indicted in the fuel subsidy scam, thereby violating the ICPC Act, 2000.

NIGERIA Thursday recorded a milestone in her investment drive as the Federal Government and General Electric (GE) company of the United States (U.S.) sealed a $1billion (N158 billion) deal to boost the power sector in the next five years.

And the growing profile of Cross River State as a preferred investment destination was underlined with a plan to establish a manufacturing/assembly and training facilities in Calabar.

At a ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Trade and Investment Minister, Olusegun Aganga, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Federal Government while the Global Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GE, Mr. Jeff Immelt, led other top executives to endorse on behalf of the company.

Aganga explained that GE’s proposed investment in Nigeria was based on the country’s positive macro-economic indicators.

The new deal also takes care of additional investment in the service workshops in Port Harcourt and Onne in Rivers State.

The deal, which comprises $250 million capital expenditure and over $800 million incremental spending on local sourcing of goods and services, is expected to create 2,300 jobs and make Nigeria the regional hub for GE’s manufacturing, service and innovation in Africa. It will also support the company’s power generation, oil and gas production and exploration activities.

GE has also taken concrete steps to actualise its recent promise to work with Nigerian companies to build power plants to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity in the country.

Also yesterday, the firm sealed a landmark agreement with Geometric Power Limited for the construction of a 450mw power plant in Aba, the commercial city of Abia State for $500 million.

The joint development agreement was sealed by top management of both firms in Abuja led by Immelt, and promoter of Geometric Power Limited and former Power Minister, Prof. Bart Nnaji.

Immelt said the investment was a demonstration of the company’s confidence in the Nigerian economy.

The company says it intends to provide one-year to four-year training programmes locally and internationally for repair engineers, welders, fabricators, machinists and special processing.”

The President and CEO of the company in the country, Lazarus Angbazo, assured that Nigerians would make up 90 per cent of the staff and management of the manufacturing facility.

Cross River State’s Acting Governor, Efiok Cobham, gave the commitment of the Calabar government in ensuring that the investment takes off as soon as possible.

He described GE’s decision to site the facilities in Calabar as a development that would be mutually beneficial.

On the Aba project, Immelt said: “By this agreement, GE is initiating a full realisation of its plan to develop with Nigerian companies up to 10,000mw of power in Nigeria. Both companies will bring their respective strengths to achieve synergy in reaching financial close for this project as quickly as possible. Under this agreement, the team will employ GE technologies in the full realisation of the project.”

if u bought fuel 120 does not mean others bought it for that price if u stay in the east fuel has alway been more expensive there even before GEJ came on board.
