@OLAADEGU

If the distance between us in earth and some other planets in the universe is over a million light years away and we can see their light reflecting, isn't that proof that the universe or the earth is not a couple thousands old?

Christianity Etc › Re: Similarities Between Evolution And Religion by Kay17: 8:48pm On Apr 17, 2011
The major problem evolution has is the direct opposition to major monotheist religions and usurping God's power of creation. The ideas are simple, living organisms largely depend on their environment and interactions among themselves to survive, if poorly fitted then their chances get simpler and with competition from other organisms could eventually drive them to extinction.

First comes mutation, which are random changes in the transfer of genes from the parents to the offsprings and accounts for the uniqueness for every organism even humans. Both parents contribute half of the chromosomes of their offsprings and yet they all look different, with different fingerprints, even in some traits. Mutations could either be advantageous or disadvantageous.

Little drops of water makes a mighty ocean, these changes though are not dramatic could eventually result to a completely different organism. A pool of genetic changes could easily give rise to new species.

Evolution explains why rabbit, human, cow, lion fossils are not found dated about 100million years ago. The connection among all organisms. . .

As a religion, it confronts religions and shakes their foundations. But it method is still on falsification and verifiability, conclusions are drawn from a compilation of evidence and surprisingly this simple idea a 19th century has prevailed against all odds.

@OP

You started well, mentioning the proliferation of religions and their attempts and claims to seek monopoly on the passage to God, their subjectivity in their methods, but the train derailed and was lost when threw Jesus into the picture without a justification or explanation. It was like you were more or less guilty of the same crimes of Religion.

If Jesus was the son of God and he died for us in form of a human sacrifice, is it possible for me to discover that 'fact' independently without you talking me or a means of verifying your claims?

People are some shade of brown, because we all have a brown pigment in our skin called melanin. This is what makes us the shade of colour that we are. Some have a lot of melanin and they would be very dark and some don't have as much melanin which would make them lighter in complexion. Adam and Eve must have had a medium brown amount of pigment. From such 2 medium brown folks, they would be able to pass on their genes to produce a very dark child or really light one. We all do have the same type of skin colour it is just that the amount of melanin varies from person to person.
I must commend your efforts.

The kind of variations i had in mind included not only skin colour but facial differences, general body sizes, disease resistant, . . .

Christianity Etc › Re: Science Confirms The Bible by Kay17: 7:17pm On Apr 16, 2011
Plants according to the Bible was created on the third day while the Sun was on the fourth. A big problem here, someone failed to consider the fact that plant rely on sunlight for survival. A primitive bronze age man wouldn't have known.

The Bible claims also that the massive universe, was created within a week! and the omnipotent and eternal God rested! after so much labour.

Also, amazing or rather ridiculous stories include Adam and Eve being the founders of humankind, and surprisingly, there descendants today include the mongoloid(Chinese, Japanese&Korean) dark-skinned Negroes, Caucasians(Europeans), the South Americans and the Native Americans. How these people with these wide variation and differences came from monoethnic parents without evolution is amazing and requires serious explanations.

The manner which the delicate insects of the Amazon Forest managed to cross the Big Pond to arrive somewhere in the MiddleEast to enter Noah's ark is yet to be explained by our Christian apologists or how kangaroos from faraway Australia got to MiddleEast. Also how freshwater creatures survived when their habitat was was diluted with seawater and viceversa.

In Job 11:9 it says that heaven and hell's measurements are "Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea". How long is a sphere? There is no length in a sphere. Now a flat two dimensional object would have a length.

Isaiah 40:22- It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And it's inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
But anyone with a basic grasp of geometry knows what a circle is. It's a flat, two dimensional object. According to these scriptures, the earth is shaped like a CD. Again, as much as many people want to believe this proves that the world is a sphere, they are only proving the Bible talks of a flat earth. There are many who say "it says circle, it got the shape right". But this was also a common mistake of the day. People thought the earth was shaped like a plate. They got this belief because if they pointed at the horizon and they spin while tracing the horizon, it appears that they live on a flat circle. And they could travel 1000 miles and do the same thing and they got the same result. It made sense.

In Genesis 1:6-8 God created a firmament (which he named "Heaven"wink to divide the water on earth and the water in the sky. Do we really have a solid sky holding water over us? How the heck did we get to the moon? Does the space shuttle have a "firmament opener" on the front of it? This would explain why every time it rained in the Bible, that God had to "open the windows of heaven" (Gen. 7:1 and Isa. 24:18 are examples). These openings allowed all the water above the solid sky to leak out. Maybe we broke a window on our first space mission, and have flown out the broken window every time since.

"Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;" - Job 38:6
This leaves off the impression that the earth is stationary. Foundation connotes a structure to hoist a building, to give solidity and not fluidity, why would there be a reference to a foundation with our modern knowledge of the earth? A cornerstone? where? pls apologists explain this.

In Genesis 1:16 says "And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also." According to this, the moon is a light source just like the sun, only not as bright. If this was the case, we couldn't land on the moon, it would be too hot. It is also strange that it took God the day to make the sun and the moon, but the stars are portrayed as an afterthought of sorts. "He made the stars also", this is a definite sign that the Bible is inspired by man. It is clear that man could not have perceived that the stars were the same as the sun, but in most cases much larger. Naturally they thought that these specks were just thrown about. The verse should read "God created the stars and planetary objects, he also made the earth, sun, and moon". But man, in those days, would have never seen it that way.

There are also demons and spirits responsible for sicknesses and diseases and how blood cures leprosy!

Christianity Etc › Re: What Do You Think Of This Action? by Kay17: 4:26pm On Apr 10, 2011
I disagree with this. There are major differences between inciting ethnic violence and burning of one's copy of a book.
Religious ideas are simply ideas like others which in a free society must be open to criticism and discussion. Criticizing a religion does not violate a person's right to religious freedom because a criticism does not stop the person from practicing their religion.
And unwarranted respect and regard for some religious views can lead to murders, child abuse and discrimination.
Wrong Wrong! As long as they preserve their religion as a private affair/sacred, Criticism will be unwarranted, and unnecessary. The idea of personal freedom is to create a dome or an exclusion zone from other humans and their interference. But if provisions of the Quran are made laws, then the Quran is being opened up as public instrument thus attract whatever critique or criticism.

Of course I'm not justifying the murders, even if Terry Jones was murdered. It was like Terry Jones was playing out a 'Christian vs Muslim' contest.

Christianity Etc › Re: What Do You Think Of This Action? by Kay17: 6:03pm On Apr 09, 2011
Freedom of speech or expression, if left unguarded and absolute could be harmful to the rights of others. Such inciting ethnic violence or hate speech towards an ethnic group or religious group. Their right to life is threatened, like religious freedom. Unwarranted disrespect and disregard for people's religions violates their right to religious freedom.

The Quran is not placed or open to a public contest, rather it is a personal symbol of their sacred faith.

Pharoh:
Do you honestly think it is easy to fight crime anywhere in the world and do you think the work of a security chief is that easy to do that you have to compare it with that of the INEC's Job. Have they been able to solve all the crime in united states, do you see what is happening in Mexico because they want to fight the drug mafia. Columbia is there to show you when they tried to fight the drug mafia as well.

Sister with all honesty i am not exonerating the security chiefs but if we don't tackle the root cause of our problems then we are going no where with security issues in this country. We have not even moved beyond the question of why and we want to solve how. Tackle the security of why first because now we are jumping to how to solve bomb blast in the country. Why should there be bombings in Nigeria because i live in a country where there has not been a bomb blast ever since i was here.

Let us start asking ourselves sincere questions because when you do the right thing then we would have solve half of our problems. When i was a little boy we used to leave our doors open in the village and nobody even needs to fence their houses. Now we even live behind glorified prisons, please let us tackle the hatred between us as Nigerians then we would have solved half of our security issues. We also need developments both socially and technologically to fight crimes as well.
Therefore we should celebrate this, PDP GEj more bombings pls. Since we can not solve or prevent all the crimes

Back to the topic.

Archaeology confirms the Bible again!

The Bible makes more than 40 references to the great Hittite Empire.  However, until one hundred years ago there was no archaeological evidence to substantiate the biblical claim that the Hittites existed.  Skeptics claimed that the Bible was in error, until their mouths were suddenly stopped.  In 1906, Hugo Winckler uncovered a huge library of 10,000 clay tablets, which completely documented the lost Hittite Empire.  We now know that at its height, the Hittite civilization rivaled Egypt and Assyria in its glory and power.

Dr. Nelson Glueck wrote that:

"It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference.  Scores of archaeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or exact detail historical statements in the Bible.  And by the same token, proper evaluation of Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries."

Dr. Joseph P. Free also corroborated this by saying:

"Archaeology has confirmed countless passages which have been rejected by critics as unhistorical or contradictory to known facts . . . Yet archaeological discoveries have shown that these critical charges . . . are wrong and that the Bible is trustworthy in the very statements which have been set aside as untrustworthy . . . We do not know of any cases where the Bible has been proved wrong."

"But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?" -- Matthew 26:54
No denied the Hittite Empire or Egyptian kingdoms, the problem is over 5 million people travelled in a desert for 40yrs and yet let nothing behind, no marks, no manna, no pots, not tents, just left nothing!

OLAADEGBU:
Scientific facts recorded in the Bible

For ages, scientists believed in a geocentric view of the universe.  The difference between night and day were believed to be caused by the sun revolving around the earth.  Today, we know that the earth's rotation on its axis is responsible for the suns "rising and setting."  But 4,000 or more years ago, it was written, "Have you commanded the morning since your days; and caused the day spring [dawn] to know his place? . . . It [the earth] is turned as clay to the seal" (Job 38:12,14).  The picture here is of a clay vessel being turned or rotated upon the potter's wheel.  This is an accurate analogy of the earth's rotation
You have still not provided evidence that was proffered at that time to prove the flat earth
