You still need to upload your photo oo. If not your application will be delayed. It is clearly written on your confirmation page.

Thanks so much, in the past you can simply work in with a passport photograph.

They simply need to make remove the option of submitting the form online without uploading a passport photo.

Thanks a lot for your clarification. I was refused early 2015. We are in October 2016. It's more than a year plus. Isn't it enough time to try again? My Indonesia trip was in October 2015. Is a year plus not enough to try again?

Avoid saying your friend will sponsor the trip, even if he will.

You should be the one to sponsor such kind of trip.

Even the VO's sometimes are too fast in taking decisions... and can likely make a wrong decision.

Many times , the VO always make judgement the way they feel like at that particular point in time. And as human they could judge wrongly too.

So if you think all is well with you, just give it some time, and apply later.

As much as it's being said on here that having a close family member in the States doesn't deter u from getting a US tourist visa but unfortunately otherwise was the case this morning. Transcript as follows.;

V.O: Good morning (with all smiles)
Me: Good morning ma'am ( def filled with smiles too)
V.O: Why and were are you going to in the United States?
Me: To attend the Unconventional Resources Technology Conference 2016 in San Antonio, Texas and would also be visiting my wife after the conference.
V.O: What's your residential status in the country?
Me: Student
V.O Duration of the Conference?
Me: August 1-3rd
V.O: Do you know anyone in the United States?
Me: Yes! My wife.
V.O: What's her status in the States, what does she do and were does she live in the States?
Me: Registered Nurse, LPR and lives in Atlanta
V.O: How many times have you seen each other after she left your home country
Me: Twice
V.O: Where else have you being to?
Me: United Arab Emirates, Nigeria and Netherlands and Greece
V.O: I am very sorry and I need you to understand what am about to say. Looking at your information you seem qualified for a visa and I would have loved to issue you one but your wife’s presence in the United States had cost you this. IT WILL BE VERY HARD for you to get a tourist visa BECAUSE YOUR WIFE is in the United States. Please kindly tell her to put in your papers for the IV.
Me: *cuts in* I do understand but this trip isn't majorly on visiting my wife. The conference is much needed to meet up with a Professor in relation to my forthcoming internship.
V.O: I do understand but like I said your wife’s presence in the United States ........... Go ahead and put in for your IV.

This is my second time. First application was in 2014 also for a conference and btw then and now, a lot had changed in my situation. There was actually no intention to stay after the said stated date in the ds160 form.

Having a family member especially spouse in US makes it more difficult to qualify for none immigrant visa , but definitely not makes it a blanket no! some people with a very strong ties at home still get granted.
its expected that it ll be more difficult if you have a spouse than siblings.

hello everyone. new on this trend.
i have been to the usa twice, first with hubby, next visit alone cos of tight husband schedule. now i wanna take my kids for the next vacation but without hubby cos he is always busy and wouldnt be available to travel with us. want to apply for visa for my kids for a 2 weeks vacation sometime next year. need your advise pls. Are my good to go. i am scared cos i read the post of a lady whose baby was denied visa. will give it a trial though but i need your advise and suggestions. children are 8yrs, 6yrs and 2 years and all girs. work in a reputable organisation and very well placed. will be having my dropbox bfore applying for the kids.
await your responses pls

You have a very good chance of your children getting granted.
Just be prepared to explain confidently why and places you want to take the children to visit and Why your husband will not be traveling with the family. once you can explain that convincingly you are as good as been granted.

Be confident and pray for favour, if possible take along copy of you boss visa and itinerary with you.

Getting B1/2 visa generally is a 50/50 thing. The more confident and upright you sound , the better your chances!

To the best of my knowledge,I think I know where the problem of this barcode lies. When I was scheduling my appointment, I almost clicked the last button,I now remembered the complaints of nairalanders about the barcode, when I checked,lo and behold,I had another code entirely. This different code was the code I used last year when i wanted to attend a friend's wedding who sent his IV late.
So I edited the barcode sha.
Lesson - pls always check every detail before clicking next or finish or send as the case may be.
Love you all.

Very correct. seems the barcode of your last appointment if you have made one b4 will always first appear on the new appointment (happens to me) you will need to change it to the current one b4 submitting!

Always double check before ticking that submit button, I dashed them money without been able to appear for interview due to a small error.

I was refused today. These Americans really don't like Nigerians. Yellow papers everywhere. A woman was shouting on top of her voice that they must let her go see her daughter who just gave birth that they deny her every time she applies. Well mine was sour aswell. Travel history I guess. Was gonna go for a vacation(first time travel). Good job, single.

Transcripts below
Me: Good morning
VO: pass me your passport
VO: why are you traveling to the US.
Me: Going on a vacation from work
VO: what do you do?
Me: told him and where I work.
VO: That's really a good Job
VO: how long have you been with them
Me: 3yrs 4 months
VO: have you traveled out of the country before.
Me: No
VO: where are you going in the US
Me: Bronx, New York
VO: do you know anyone in Bronx
Me: yes, A family friend
VO: Tell me more about the relationship with your family.
Me: Told him
VO: typing vigorously.... Hands me yellow paper and spoke the usual english.
Me: Thank you and there I go.

These guys are mean.

Sorry dear. They are actually not mean. They are just carrying out their responsibiliies. They have to set some high standard in granting visa.

You can always try again later when things get better!( borrowed from a VO)

The only thing I fear about VOs from my past experience , they ll make you feel so relaxed that all is going on well with your interview until .......... the I am sorry you are not qualified now statement will show up from no where!

Since you have already submitted and appointment booked ( Although there is a way you can still get it changed) all you need is to be confident. #250 k job is a big tie too. people with lesser salaries and still single gets visa daily.

All you need is to sound confident, upfront and positive. You are good to go!

Hello All,

Please I need advice on how to go about my interview. Am a 24year old single lady. I applied for a B1/B2 visa last year June (my brother in law invited me) and was rejected on the basis of no strong ties I filled myself as my sponsor, I was earning 120k as at that time. This time around I filled my dad as my sponsor, my monthly income as 250k (it has truly increased) and I also indicated I was gonna be traveling with him in my DS-160 application. I have never travelled before. What do you advice?? Should I go with an engagement ring?

Being engaged or not ll likely not affect the outcome of your interview.

But at 24 and earning about 250k. I don't think you need to say your dad is sponsoring you. Apart from sponsoring for academics or medicals , an adult traveling on another individual sponsorship ( excluding spouse ) for a tourist purpose will usually get refused a visit visa.

As u see me, my daughter is a US citizen. I'm waiting till she turns 21yrs in 20 yrs time so dat she can file for me. If ur sister starts now, before 21 yrs they will answer you

Add 20 years to 30 years. That means she ll be close to 50 years then. grin

Thanks for your sincere reply, but why did u think my chances are slim if invited?and if she becomes a citizen will that hasten d filling process?if true ,should she just start her nationalization before starting the filling for me?thanks

Your chances are slim because you have a wife that is a permanent resident in US, there is a very strong likelihood that you ll decide to stay for good if granted the visa which is an abuse of d visit visa.

They have different classes of Visa , they try to avoid people abusing the visit visa route to stay in US.

I think the process of a Citizen filling for spouse is shorter than if it was a permanent resident doing the filling. So if the process of becoming a citizen is not too long its better she start the process immediately and latter file for you.

But It ll not do you any harm to try the visit visa first before she file for you, you can't tell you might be lucky to be granted. So that you will be able to have the opportunity to visit her as much as possible while you are still waiting for your residence permit.

I want to thank everyone on this thread and also on the "Give Birth in the US" thread. You guys have been fantastic. I had my interview this morning scheduled for 9am . The queue was not as long as it usually is. My interview was very brief and straight to the point (about 3 mins). The VO refused the two people before me .

In the spirit of giving back and clarification of different notions, here is my transcript:

VO: Good Morning
Me: Good Morning
VO: Why are you going to the US?
Me: To witness the birth of my child and vacation with family
VO: Oh! Your baby - Congratulations
Me: Thanks, a baby XXXXX to be precise.
VO: Nice - Congratulations
VO: Is your wife already in the US?
Me: No. She would travel on the XX of XX (hands over a copy of DW Visa)
VO: Looks through the Visa and hands it back to me.
VO: You are going to Houston right?
Me: Yes
VO: What do you do sir?
Me: Work with Bleep as an XX (explained my functions in the office)
VO: How long have you been working in your office?
Me: XX years and XX months
VO: Okay. All your information looks good. ( then types for like 30 seconds)
VO: Hands me the white paper and circles where to collect the Visa. Then he says we should ensure we pay all our bills, collect zero balance payment and ensure we do not collect any form of insurance.
VO: Congratulations on your baby once again and enjoy your trip.
Me: Thank you and have a nice day.

P.S - The VO did not talk about my refusal in 2014, my bank statement, my ties to Nigeria or my pending immigrant petition. He was God sent! I give all the glory to God!

Good afternoon, and thanks for the response and comments so far,,i just have a little problem that im seeking your advise.i applied for a conference visa sometime last year and i was denied,my wife who is a green card holder and a citizen last year decembe(dow she hasnt started filing for her citizenship, but she is eligible) now decides to file for me,i learnt the filling takes time, say a year atleast and could extend to 3/4yrs.now my question is,should she invite me and try our luck or she should just go on with the filling, don't want to stay away from her for 3/4 yrs,cos she may not be coming to Nigeria anytime soon, she has phobia for flying.please your advise is seriously needed.thanks

To me let her invite you first, although your chances of being granted is very small but it worth the try. If it come out negative , let her start d filling for you process , you can still try your luck a year after again (#32k visa fee at risk) will not kill a person of your status and it ll not definately affect the outcome of the petition negatively. So use the visa fee to risk not staying too long without seeing your wife.

Hello all, silent reader here, decided to do my bit and drop my transcript

I had been very nervous before this interview ‘cos of the many fantastic things I heard about the US consulate e.g it is not by where you have travelled to, or the rumour that single people don’t usually get visas, or should I mention how you read some transcripts and you wonder how on earth they got denied? Hmm.

Anyway. I applied with my mum. Our appointment was for 9am so naturally we got there at 7.15 (LOL). Dressed business casual. Went armed with our DS160 confirmation forms, I took my last 3 months statements and a letter from my employer. Mum took her bank statements.

We got in and went through the various screenings . Eventually, we got to the interview window at about 9.15AM.

Q: What’s the relationship between you and her (looks at me and mum)
A: She’s my mum Mum: She’s my daughter LOL ( Both answers came out at the same time!)
Q: Where are you going in the US
A: New York
Q: Do you know anyone in New York
A: No, but we’ve booked a hotel. My mum and I like to go to places together and we went to France last year (I don’t know where that answer (though true) came from, I blame the millions of transcripts I read on nairaland - LOL)
Q: Where do you work
A: I work at ……
Q: What do you do there
A: Well basically we blah blah blah blah blah
(Interviewer cuts in - I mean, what’s your position)
A: Oh! I’m a Manager
Q: (To Mum): What do you do?
Mum: Well I’m retired now but I own my own business blah blah blah blah
(At this point I can’t really remember what she asked my mum about the business but my mum answered confidently)
Q: (To Mum): Are you married
A: No, I’m a widow
Q: (To Me) How much do you earn
A: I answered down to the last naira!
Q: How long have you been working for….
A: 4 years.
Then this is where I got questions I did not expect:

Q: Where did you go to school?
A: Do you mean university? In the UK
Q: What did you Study and what university
A: I studied blah at Masters level and blah at Undergrad
Q: Have you travelled before (to mum)
A: Yes to Germany, Rome in the past, but I go to the UK a lot
Q: Why did you go to all these places (to mum)
A: For vacations
Q: Have you travelled before (to me):
A: Yes, to the UK and France
Q: How old are you (to me):
A: Answered accordingly

Interviewer: OK, your visas have been approved, collect your visas here (hands over white paper with circled address) in 3 days

Woo-Hoo!

Meanwhile common misconceptions

1. If you successfully uploaded your picture on the DS160 you do not, I REPEAT, you do NOT need to take any passport photographs there. If you doubt me, take some but please do not patronise those useless touts at the beginning of the street. Find a studio to take them. I wasted 4k today for pictures I will never use!
2. So many people went holding only their folders (you are actually allowed a bag, just don’t let it be too big and make sure all electronic devices and risky items are removed
3. Photocopy of passport data page is not necessary
4. As much as you can, IGNORE THOSE TOUTS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE STREET
5. All you really need is your DS-160 confirmation, GTBank Visa receipt and appointment confirmation, but you may carry other supporting documents.

You live and you learn. Thank you all for your contributions, helped a lot on what to expect.

Congratulations! I can see that the VO really drilled you very much.
About the passport photograph , on my on appointment day, one of CGI staff that did the first screening insisted that I must go snap another pix that I must present a hard copy apart from the uploaded photo. Those guys outside collected 1k from me. on getting inside the main embassy , the lady doing d second screening told me I do not need any hard copy if I have uploaded one. At the end no hardcopy needed.

This one that you are a she , single and with this beautiful profile , it ll not be a bad idea for me to track you down in NewYork to protect. you from other Hawks o!

if you have a pending immigrant petition, then you have an immediate relative in the US.
only people with immediate relatives can get petitioned (employment too, but thats irrelevant cos it is always current or almost current.).

@kennycanny, Ambode's wife will use A1 visa

unfortunately i wrongly assumed people here will just get it that i was not referring to some few exceptions like your Ambode's wife, people referred by US chamber of commerce, wole soyinka and others who obviously dont have problem getting visas.
i forgot to spell it out.

so sorry I didn't spell it out too. ANYBODY with strong ties to Nigeria can get granted visit visa even with immigration petition pending. A lot of people have got it and a lot ll still continue to get it.

Immigration petition will not lead to automatic denial of visit visa , it ll only make it more difficult but not impossible to get if you have a great tie to Nigeria!
