Sweden, which organized its nuclear weapon research program in 1945, began to step back from the nuclear threshold in the mid-1960s and later formalized its nonnuclear status by becoming a signatory to the Nonproliferation Treaty. For some reason they gave up on the idea and upped their defense spending at one being the 3rd highest defense spender per capita after only US/Israel ahead of Russia! They topped at 4% of GDP in the 60s and have been decreasing ever since.

The result was world class platforms! The Draken Saab 35 first flew in the 50s,incorporating a design still seen today. The Saab 37 Viggen followed in the late 60s specifically designed for low turn around times,high sortie rate and good STOL ability.

A thrust reverser allows for the Viggen to land within five hundred meters, the airframe is designed to touch down without flaring at low speeds to minimize damage to expedient fields and roads.

Smart design also meant the Viggen could rearm extremely quickly, turnaround times were clocked at under twenty minutes with conscript ground crews, maximizing the rapidity to which the Swedish Air Force could respond to an attack. It was estimated that aircraft could fly upwards of five sorties a day.

The Grip still shows the original 60 year old design. These Scandis were good designers-after all they're Germanic. They had a turretless tank which was highly rated. Luckily,Russia never took them on but I suspect they'd have received a bloody nose had they done so.
