Beaf:
Improve the system and you kill corruption. The sharing of free money at Abuja is the number one reason for our shabby values. We need true federalism that will allow the people to actually generate money. Nigeria is a total embarrassment as far as development is concerned, we are an absolute disgrace.
You are not lying bro!
So when he harasses you for that N50, in theory you don't have to pay, right? But he'll just waste your time if you do not. He'll waste your time asking for papers X, Y, and Z. And if you don't have them, then he'll want to take you to the police station, basically waste your entire day.

It isn't like they are just pointing a gun to your head asking for money, is it? At least as a general rule, that is not how it happens (from what I've seen.) They'll just find some permit/paper that you are supposed to have, which you do not.
My brother you are indeed very naive about Nigeria, You probably lack the experience to understand. Have you lived in Nigeria for a stretch of time before? say 5 years w/o leaving?

They can kill you bro! They will kill you and no one will investigate.

But, come o, You cannot be that naive, you've seen the videos right, the Boko haram videos? oppression is a national culture in Nigeria. Oppression aggravates our corruption. There is little to no respect for the egalitarian principles they taught you in America and Europe.

In Nigeria, might wins every time. No hope for the little man,

To answer you, Yes Your family will pay, because it goes beyond time wasting. Hahaha I wish that's all it takes to not pay bribes,  time wasting? LOL.

Take my advice, visit those places I mentioned.
Look, from my perspective, in both situations the authorities set up unjust laws (55 mph speed limit on a road that can easily take 80+; power to detain drivers on the silly pretext of looking for documentation X, Y, and Z, making sure not an armed robber, etc) to extract cash from commuters.

Both are government shakedowns for cash, are they not? Setup an unjust law to extract money. Yet one is viewed as OK, and the other an example of prime evil  huh
You are now having fun undecided

Agree or disagree with the speed limit law, point is; it went through due process.

The Policeman harassing you and your family for N50 is not acting on any process written in law. no process to it at all, it is haphazard, it is corrupt, it is blatant dehumanizing oppression. It happens too much in Nigeria!

You are enjoying this too much. People die everyday because of Nigerian Corruption, silly avoidable deaths.

Eku bear, ever been to a Nigerian Public Hospital? Or a Nigerian prison? or even a Nigerian Police Station, I'll recommend a visit to those places for you on your next trip, just visit as an observer.

Why did you guys disenfranchise us?

We have no Manual Voters register, talk less of Voting Machines. Millions of People can't vote in our "local Govt" because you failed to add us to your plan, we remit Billions to the Nigerian Economy every year. Why Una dey do us like that now?

Why you dey shake your head?
Hmm, I just had to shake my head so I don't spit too much venom, It disgusts me. especially when you look at the stats and see that most of the people they kill look like them and probably share the same pain and struggle they often try to claim.

I have to simply shake my head at these senseless acts sometimes, it's kinda cathartic enough for me. I know You will prefer to go further than that. I will oblige you on this one. lol

It really baffles me to hear adults encouraging this teenager to stand by her friend's decision, just because they are 'good friend'.
Both girls at this point in time are confused and any of the decisions taken will change the course of their lives.
They say 'stand by yr friend', suppose she tells you she is going 4 an abortion and wants u 2 keep it secret and eventually dies in the acts, do you think u will remain thesame?

@Atreides
I strongly stand by your decision, she either tell her parents or you will do it 4 her, in that way, its no longer a secret. Secrets could be damaging!
Thank you Mengi, I surprise too o! Thank you to Chaircover also.

I don't come here too often, but I hope the adults who interact with teenagers on here understand that the teenage brain is far from fully-developed. This is not a diss, it's supported by science, decent Peer reviewed science: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124119468

@OP, if you both of you do not have parents I probably will understand, but you both do. You cannot deal with this issue. You cannot do it. I know the teenage brain thinks it can handle everything but we know it's a lie. Tell your Parents, Period.

Also try to read the link I posted, it's not a very long read and I can sense you like to read, you will find it interesting also.

Finally, Please scrap that No snitching mentality, You live in Nigeria, You are Nigerian right?  WE SNITCH!

You are not an American, blank! you are not even African American sef, Astreides, We Snitch!!

Quit listening to every ideology on MTV. We snitch in Nigeria.

Snitching is the right thing to do, I can guess You are probably from a decent, well to do Nigerian family, not from some gangster-drug-dealing-Police-abused environment.

Tell your friend you have to let your father know, That is where your final allegiance should lie at this age(not even 17 yet!). It is the right thing to do when you see something wrong, It heals and protects the community.

Here's an excerpt from the above link for those who are interested; My $0.02

Teenage Brains Are Different

She learned that it's not so much what teens are thinking — it's how.

Jensen says scientists used to think human brain development was pretty complete by age 10. Or as she puts it, that "a teenage brain is just an adult brain with fewer miles on it."

But it's not. To begin with, she says, a crucial part of the brain — the frontal lobes — are not fully connected. Really.

"It's the part of the brain that says: 'Is this a good idea? What is the consequence of this action?' " Jensen says. "It's not that they don't have a frontal lobe. And they can use it. But they're going to access it more slowly."

That's because the nerve cells that connect teenagers' frontal lobes with the rest of their brains are sluggish. Teenagers don't have as much of the fatty coating called myelin, or "white matter," that adults have in this area.

Think of it as insulation on an electrical wire. Nerves need myelin for nerve signals to flow freely. Spotty or thin myelin leads to inefficient communication between one part of the brain and another.

I just don't get it when some women say their man should never hit them 'no matter what'. That is just ridiculous. Every human being has a breaking/boiling point. Aggravating a man with all sorts of despicable behaviour, nagging and verbal abuse and expecting him to remain 'mature' and 'calm', no matter what you do or say to him is impossibly idiotic and selfish. It's easy to say in theory
You used the right adjectives! It is also very sexist!

it is an issue of vision. I wrote a book. go and get it and read it.

Look everybody who have read my post about removing edo, delta ,bayelsa and yorubas into Benin republic. Have called me every name in the world. But they do not know I am trying to help them.

I am trying to help an igbo man and I am trying to help an hausa man. you see over here we go and borrow any amount of money in the banks without security. I can go and borrow $500,000  to buy a house if I want. a 21 years can go and borrow $500,000 to buy a house. Why, because they have a system in place. And it is that system. I want to bring to Nigeria.

You have all abuse me and call me name from tribalist to , foolman, olorire. not-so-smart person etc  the reason why you call me names is that you are all ignorant. your senators and house of members are ignorant. I use the word ignorant.

You see when you get abroad, they ask you, do you have canadian experience. If you dont have it they dont give you a job.
And I have a canadian experience. And with my canadian experience I can change the life of nigeria. because I have had canadian experience for decades, I am smarter than Jonathan Goodluck. except he can do wayo pass me. Because he lives in nigeria, where wayo plenty. he has gain more wayo experience more than me.

But when it comes to making your life better. I can change the future of nigerian by what I know. that why I would love to be president. So that I can make change. we all came abroad because we did not have leaders who could make change.

And because I have canadian experience I am a better president that Jonathan Goodluck or Nuhu Ribadu or Buhari. it is an issue of knowing North america secret and doing the same in Nigeria. if it worked for them. It would work for nigeria.

First of all, if I was president of Nigeria. i would force every nigerian to build only prototype house with the same colour. What I would do is get people to design about 30 different prototype houses  with colour and nigerian would not be able to build a house, if the house does not march this prototype homes and  colour.

Politics › Re: Why Acn Imposes Candidates – Akande by Kilode1: 10:42pm On Jan 20, 2011
DK, I understand, but we are not exactly practicing parliamentary democracy like they do in the UK where you essentially vote party and ideology, not necessarily individuals, I mean, parties basically assign those positions even the PM. That is the tradition and they are used to that.

I'm afraid opponents will use this against the ACN, they probably can get away with it in the SW because of the nature and tradition of SW politics. But it will be an hard-sell in other regions.

Although I'm more worried about the SW in this election, I still want the ACN to make good in-roads in other regions and become a formidable opposition party.
Politics › Re: Why Acn Imposes Candidates – Akande by Kilode1: 10:00pm On Jan 20, 2011
Missy85 and DK made good points. But, I want ACN to take more steps toward being more "democratic" though.

We cannot continue to expect a few leaders to determine and impose candidates in a democracy. No matter how good their intentions are, they will not always get it right and it may breed avoidable discontent.

I understand the need and circumstances surrounding Akande's comments as described by Missy85, that is the reason why we need to manage public opinion better and communicate effectively to our people.

EX: I did not see any candidate that would have defeated Ribadu in the ACN primaries, they should have gone ahead to conduct it and let folks vote anyway. At least for the public relation/perception benefits.

There are better ways to promote good candidates than outright imposition.

I remember those AD adverts and promo that ran across the SW in 1999 featuring Bola Ige and Pa Adesanya endorsing candidates, they can do the same internally, side with candidates promote them vigorously and let the delegates and people choose.

We can do better than this.

In politics, public perception is as important as numbers. My $0.02
