I would say head defers! Some get to school get assistantship most especially in the STEM programs through some research works with profs. Others go through installment payments by that work their ass out. That is why you need to get people who you can follow through paths. Once you arrived you can get some sort of scholarships that would waive chunk of the tuition. Besides, graduate school is well funded in the states than Canada so graduate students have more options for funding. That is why people here advise graduate school more than undergraduate. Yankee is a place of opportunities, once you arrive, keep your heart and sights at greatness, you will be covered!
Charles61: I really want guru who are in united state to help me with this information please. A friend of mine who is doing his master's in Canada finds it tough to pay his tuition fees, accommodation and other living expenses, even with his part time job. And his tuition fees is 14k CAD.
However, this 40k, 50k USD fees even after tuition fees waiver, some total tuition fees still remains 25k usd. am really curious about how would one pay the tuition fees, when we all sincerely know that 60% of people traveling are sponsoring themselves. Are people dropping out of university?
Even with 1k USD dollar job per month can't still balance the 25-50k USD.
Please I just want more understanding before taking a step or advicing any other person
America itself na real fraudster! America would makes her things like it's the best while portray others as inferior. Once someone has never been convicted by any court of law the person is innocent. So, if I take gifts from someone people projected as a fraudster does that make me a fraudster as well? the celebrated cop may have taken something from hush ofcourse. Did he tell him to make his money in a fraudulent way? Irrespective of how anybody makes his money, such individual has the right to be heard and right to free association. My question to America court that issued the arrest warrant is this: did the cop take part in the fraudulent activity, I mean like being an active part of the fraud? Anyone can get anything from anybody.
limeta: This one pass bad belle he should go talk to them is he not a top cop any more.
I would say the guy in question 'Fairheart' proposed a lot of hypotheses here which some of us wondered what would have been the reasons behind some of his bad and devilish gestures. For instance, he has come here severally telling people to hide their name of school and programs. He would always want to give advices that would give the newbies longest and complex routes to solve problems that seems obvious and easy to solve. I was forced to object some of his demonic thought about people searching for programs. I know how nairaland has made my life way easier considering the fact that I am a researcher in one of the hard sciences in the states. I was forced to analyze his thoughts on many of his opinions about people searching for schools and programs in the states with my methodology as a researcher and I just can't find some of his opinions making any sense. hence, I objected them so strongly but little did I know that he has some primitive and selfish interests that he is pushing. I would propose that his antecedents are thoroughly checked.
walepepe21: As Much as I don’t love to engage in brickbats or controversies among people here due to the way we air our minds on any issue that arises but I have learnt a lot here which paved ways for me to be In USA Today and to be a mentor and leader to many people, prospective students who aspire to come here to have their Msc/PhD. I am grateful to Nairaland!
On Fairheart Saga. I have keenly followed how Prexy1999 and others have insulted, challenged his credibility, subjected him to all sort of things to know his intention etc. All I can say is that I didn’t know him at all until he chatted me up himself once back in 2018/19 if I ever need help and I told him I’m fine which I really appreciate his kind gesture for reaching out to me after my closed friend shared my number to him to help me. Thank you I really appreciate that gesture !
But Guys, Mentioning his names doesn't make him a thief let us get it right at the back of our mindset please guys as we have never see anyone reported him here of any wrongdoing. Those paying chose to pay. I don't know why we are taking it so serious. Though i am not in support of billing people as the aim of this thread by the founding fathers was to ‘’HELP ONE ANOTHER FREELY WITHOUT CHARGING KOBO’’.
However, But if he (fairheart) have billed anyone, you went as far as going to their PM, if not, the person should have asked the question here. Some people don't play with their time as we are all busy here 24/7 with our lives which is cleared to all and if you want that time, pay for it. Else ask your questions here and The purpose of this thread like I said earlier before is to get things done yourself, so if at any point you are reaching out to people to help you hunt for schools then the purpose has been defeated.
Therefore, It was then I realized, though there are lots of people on this thread that are genuinely helping people selflessly like ME as I helped many people to come to USA and have a good life, All glory belongs to God Almighty! I must say but one or two people are here to make there presence known, so as to get there potential "customers". A sorts of business strategy.
Furthermore, I dislike the act of condemning people's time and effort. Fairheart has contributed in his own way on this thread which I believe some have gained from him . One may think the information one has is the most correct, another person can come out to counter it by giving another with better points with which the former commenter may learn from.
Finally, We all have our flaws. We should learn to tolerate one another as brothers and sisters. We can disagree on some issues then agree to them later. We learn everyday. ‘’Let's learn to be grateful’’.
The percent of people who earn $100k annually is less than 40 percent. about 60 percent American earns less than $15 an hour. Many Americans end up working for their wealthy individuals. They work all through their whole life working just to pay bills and loans. Some would claim they (Americans) get government reliefs which I would argue that it's the mediocre among them that need the government relief as those reliefs would always make them useless in their society because the American system has a lot of check and balance as the system is designed to be well dynamic and it's something like a give and take thing. Life in America is great for the very hardworking dudes or the smart individuals. Americans live most of the life on loans and can't afford not to work if they really want to live their American dream. Nothing is virtually free because they would pay back indirectly. Mehn, the way American systems work is somehow complex and it would take a great observer to really decifer the system. Americans end up working so hard than the europeans. Atleast, I would say if their (American) government makes their education somehow free-cost to bachelor degree would reduce the level of the poor in their society just how some European countries did, my observation though. Thanks and God bless some founding fathers in Nigeria, the likes of Awolowo giving the South-westerners access to free education. I just hope soon that God will get rid of our corrupt leaders, though it might not be in this current generation but I still believe what God can not change does not exist! Disclaimer: all said here are my personal research and/or opinion not fact because they are not yet proven! Thank you.
Baba, I take a lot of objections in your points of view. Doing research in real world require some forms of mentoring, that way students can get well ahead in their research. I would imagine how you would take on your research students if you happen to be a faculty. The place of mentoring in life is huge not even to talk of the united states. Shadowing is part of jobs training... We all need mentoring in every stages of our life. It's called being smart!
fairheart: There are people on this thread with negative opinion on things they do not understand, and I feel if they see things from another angle, it will help their journey.
On revealing school or not, nobody was forced at gun point to do it. I only advise those who are in touch with me and they see sense in that advise. We have seen 0ver 1000 approved f-1 transcripts from this thread as they continue to grow. One thing is certainly not useful to any student on these transcripts: the school name. Instead, picking up schools from transcripts here is part of the reasons some of you are not getting your visa and that you will still not get it until you change and do your home work.
WHEN YOU COPY SCHOOL When you copy school and only rely on transcripts for this purpose, you CHEAT YOURSELF of potential opportunity for your own school and perhaps, good scholarship and funding. I am of the opinion that if your Dad is not so rich that he could pay about $30K cost of attendance X 2, you ought to take the path of strength and self-sufficiency: getting good scholarship or assistantship. I understand that there are people on this thread with intention to merely use the F-1 visa to migrate. My advise are for those who actually wanted to study and secure a better future for themselves. These are the people that are required to do their homework--as part of the price for future success. It is not suffering!
When you copy schools from here, you deny yourself the opportunity to find schools that can offer you better opportunities. There are hundreds of schools for your program and that will fund you if you have a good profile and you apply early. All you have to do is explore those schools! But when you copy school from here, chances is high they will exhaust their funding due to high volume application and stop funding subsequent admission. WIU was used as a case study. They may give you admission, but always remember that every school has number of international students they wish to take, and every department has number of GA, scholarship, fellowship they award to admitted students. Bombing a school someone got admitted into always cheat you of opportunity to get something better if you had applied to a school that is not like a pure water on Nairaland.
The better your financial opportunity and unique your profile, the higher your chances of approval. Your friend might have done it and easily get their visa, but it doesn't mean it will work for you that way. This thing is case by case.
I have shared ideas on doing the work in the past. Sometimes, people assume because I am experienced on F-1 application that I know all the school that funds and easily give admission. And when I tell them I have no idea, they assume I am selfish or doesn't want to help them. The truth is that, I don't have schools in my head, except the ones students on and off here recently got approved with, and it is a matter of time before you forget them. Because of this, I feel those who did not understand should be made to understand.
There's nothing hard is finding your own school, and it is not a crime to keep it only to a small circle of friends. It doesn't mean selfishness or greed. By keeping it away, you give others the opportunity to work and find a school that works for them. But if anyone feels they want Nairaland to know their school, I have nothing against it. Who am I to be against such?
HOW TO SEARCH AND FIND GOOD SCHOOLS FOR YOUR PROFILE.
1 Google is the first place to start. And cost of attendance and profile of the school should be on your mind as you begin. First, you want to go to a school your sponsor can afford. Secondly, you want to be considered for funding that will come with monthly stipend to offset living expenses, so that you will not worry how to survive (especially if you can't get adequate support from home while in the U.S). Thirdly, you want to study at a school that offers courses that will equip and prepare you for the next phase of your career. You need specialty, broad knowledge, internship opportunity, etc. Remember, I am talking to students who genuinely want to study in the United States and are willing to do the work. Now, the three points should be in mind before you begin your school search.
1a, Be creative about it. Use search strings that is worded with your wants, i.e affordability, funding, good course., etc. Let me give you a list: AFFORDABLE UNIVERSITIES IN THE U.S FOR MASTER'S IN CHEMISTRY (For blog posts and sites that catalogue affordable schools for chemistry). BEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE U.S FOR MASTER'S IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS (For top ranking, research-driven universities for the mentioned course) UNIVERSITIES IN THE U.S WITH ASSISTANTSHIP FOR MASTER'S IN MATHEMATICS (For schools offering assistantship for mathematics).
As you would see, search string contains what you want Google to show you, and that is what you will see. The more creative you're, the better. Your search result will bring up blog posts and sites that discuss and list universities for what you want. Then, you visit site by site, and from there, make a list of the schools you see, and keep away. When you are done, visit those schools one by one. You could make a list of 20 schools, or as much as you want.
1b, Get your schools by choice of U.S States. If you were to go to the U.S which state would you like to study? California? Texas? New York? Tennessee? Etc! Select best 3 states of your choice or that you have a family member or friends. Go to Google and type, for example, ALL UNIVERSITIES IN TEXAS. Google will bring up sites and blog posts with list of these schools. I advise you look for Wikipedia page for all the schools on the list. As a study-abroad consultant, Wikipedia page for all schools in each U.S state seems the most resourcesful. There, private and public schools in the state you search is catalogued, so you get to see list of public and private schools in that state. You see their acceptance rate as well. All you do is open those schools in new tab, then read about it and get the school website directly from them. It is simple, except you are not computer literate.
2, CHECKING FOR ASSISTANTSHIP: When you open the school webiste, go straight to academic and you will see undergraduate and graduate programs. It is always under academic. Click the one that applies. Check list of programs offered and pick the program (s) you are interested in. Check program courses, and look for assistantship/scholarship. Every program page has information for assistantship/scholarship. If your master's program department offers assistantship, you will see the information there. Read it and understand condition for selection. If that school is okay, make a list on a paper and keep. You can do for as many as you want.
2a, Immediately you review your program webpage, look for the "Graduate Coordinator" or "Program Director". These are the faculty members with information on funding. Your duty is to contact each school before you even apply to them. I always advise my students to contact their program coordinator before they apply. Get the email and name of this person. Take your time to write a 3-5 paragram message detailing your course, undergraduate GPA, that you are interested in the program for so, so admission term, and that "what is the chances of being selected for a graduate assistantship or departmental scholarship if admitted into the program."
ALWAYS CONTACT YOUR POTENTIAL SCHOOL BEFORE YOU APPLY THERE.
2b, If you compose your message well, your program coordinator will be compelled to tell you what is obtainable according to your profile, GPA, experience, etc. They always tell you what is obtainable. You can then use this information to decide if you will apply or not. In December last year, a student followed these step and the two schools he contacted promised --right in their response to her message--that based on his profile, if he apply, he will be considered for admission and assistantship. He did, and both schools admitted him and offered him assistantship. He got his visa last month with deficit of $1K.
If the response from the person in charge of department seems favourable, go ahead and apply right away. The earlier, the better for you.
2c, Don't underestimate your potential of getting into top schools. Explore those too. Make a budget on how many schools you plan to apply to. Be principled about it. Be creative. Use initiative and push yourself and do your thing.
RESOURCES YOU NEED. A LAPTOP--You need a laptop to do these search well and for better result. DATA FOR INTERNET-- plan how you will always have data for this task. TIME--Decide which day of the week you will use to explore schools (put off things that won't add value to you for this task).
It is funny that some of you who complain that people are hiding their schools and so you couldn't apply their and get the same opportunity carry expensive smart phone but don't have a computer, and you say you're a student in 21st century? What exactly do you want to sacrifice to study abroad? As a youth, I was fortunate to start using computer at 17. By the time I was 21, I own a brand new laptop as a gift. I didn't ask for shoes, no jeans, but a laptop. I was hungry for knowledge. Even when I clock 30 and I needed a new laptop, I deny myself a smart phone and used the money to get a UK-USED laptop. I was using a Nokia analogue phone for 15 months, using laptop for Whatsapp, email works, and others. A silly person would say "O, you must have suffered." This is not suffering! This is sacrifice for a better life and a glorious future!
Some of you have rich parents but you never asked them for things that will help you advance your career. It is either expensive wig, phones or shoes. What happen to asking for laptop, books, and things that the beautiful future you want required?
Going to America to study is a worthwhile dream. It is a dream that both young people from the grassroots and the upper class can achieve. Last week, a student from this thread called me that he got an internship of $10000 per month. He sacrificed a lot to get his visa. Look at him today? Sacrifice paid off! I have seen young people that sold their stuffs to make these dreams a reality. Today, they are richer and more successful their their peers with rich parents.
You must gift yourself what your future demands! Get a laptop, keep money for data and make this task of getting a good school for you a priority. Enough of Netflix that add no academic value! Enough of using social media to waste quality time. If going abroad to study is your dream and you have no rich parents, listen to me and you will remember this message 10 years to come. If you really want to study abroad and become your best, get yourself a laptop, create time for the work involved. You have no business carrying iPhone 12 if you don't have a personal computer you can go to, to do the things that are better done on laptop.
The school search I just shared here needs a working laptop.
I know some of you already hate to see the name Fairheart , but well, I know my people and my people know me. Those who needs the message I preach will take it and use it. And for that, I am blessed!
Why won't my blood gets hot when I know that no sane human would believe a ship to have two captains. And being a good son of his linage and hard working dude, I want to be a man enough to head a home.
sapphiere: It beats my imagination when I see some women reject the movement. Like they are so comfortable being opressed. SHM
Why are Nigerian men so so insecure? Once the hear the word "feminism" their blood get hot.
Not only Nigeria... Almost all African countries. The world is changing the mode of doing things; AI and green energy are taken over but African continent still don't understand that their sources of survival and their operations are fading out so fast!
allwell51: Superstar singer, D'banj has narrated how God blessed him with two kids after he lost his first child three years ago.
The singer who gave the testimony at a Christian concert in Abuja, started off with affirming that he is "born again". He added that his Christian faith makes him give honor to God in all his albums.
I would say what is realistic... tell people how the way look like and don't sweetcoat it. Japa na survival... more than 50% International students don't have funding. How many foreign students fit pay the tuition with 20 hours of $10 on campus jobs? Hence, most international students resolved to work their ass out. This way na hustling things and nothing is sure.
Predstan: Working outside the university is not permitted. Uber needs your SSN and it’s also frowned at. So what skills you talking about?
Yeah, start from Python... It is more user friendly and interactive. I promise you gonna like programming when you are into it fully. Just make sure you are not in a hurry; learn a piece at a time. Another is to look for a project you want to solve that would require you to use a programming language and that would increase your curiosity.
nwikpab: Good tips. I don't have a skill and still have many things in my head. I have tried to learn Java but just can't understand nada. I am planning on looking forward to python. I am really really confused. My head no just want carry this programming of a thing.
Don't conclude on what you know little of! GRE is generally used for program/school accreditation but pandemic was seen as a waiver. So, the 2020/2021 admission cohort is a special one!
Izanghi: That's true my brother, especially during this covid 19 period, if you have publications, did conference presentations, have a very good cgpa (>4.0) with masters with a good SOP, you'll be taken before GRE students, many of the professors i have spoken to don't take that serious, they want to know if you can do research which GRE will not tell them alone. When i was about to applying, i searched for schools that waived GRE and mailed their graduate admission officer that i want to applied for phd and told them my condition that i don't have finance to do the GRE (lols) but showed them what i have to offer the department, to my amazement they said they will not consider GRE for me and told me that they will waive it for me, am talking about tier 1 universities. In fact, by God's grace, two faculty members of that department have agreed to supervised me. Have seen international students with no GRE that got admitted to duke, Ohio state university without that exam for this 2021 fall admission and got admitted with funding in my course forum. N.B: there's no rule to it, each school has her our style of admission. Oregon state university (tier 1) asked students to send mail for GRE waiver. UCLA, University of Tennessee, Iowa state university, university of Washington, Ohio state university, etc (dem plenty) which are great schools. So do your research and talked to their admission officers, they will gladly reply if they'll waive it for you or not but give a convincing reason for not doing it. But if you don't have those experience I wrote up please do GRE
Tinubu miscreants and the media with their lies! Which Yoruba leaders would attend a meeting to champion Tinubu's course? I won't even believe the likes of Gov. Makinde or Fayemi will attend such a meeting.
Awe, thanks for your response. Sometimes, the admission committee decisions are not too straightforward I guess.
Molly90: I got admitted for an Engineering PhD program at Michigan Tech Uni. Had a 2.46/5 for my B.Sc and 4.54/5 for my masters. I do not have an Engineering background but got admitted.
Hi, a friend told me that is PhD application to Michigan Tech university was denied due to low GPA. But to my surprise he has a GPA of above 3.5 out of 4.0. If there is anyone who have been admitted or knows anyone that has been admitted into the engineering program should please share their profile. Thanks
Both chem eng and chemistry depts of university of Utah waived GRE and application fees. Good location, good program and huge stipend. But, early app bird though.
Molly90: Quite a number of schools are waiving GRE even for Engineering programs. Also I notice it's easier getting full funding for chemical engineering programs. Check University of Alabama Tuscaloosa. Do your research on different schools and apply early as deadlines are fast approaching.
Being denied Visa does not really mean someone should be heartbroken because it is just the beginning of the adoption of the new normal.Travelling abroad is just giving you the opportunity to work hard and see your rewards as against Nigeria system where hardwork is rarely rewarded. However, travelling abroad has uncertainties attached to it. I would say it is the process of adoption. So, get use to it; rekindle , restrategise and bounce back!
Loloking: I understand this feeling well enough but I didn’t cry even though my interview was based on the VO subjectiveness. I replayed everything in my head till the next day. My family were all calling Nd texting I love you to me all day. They were my reason for getting out of that sadness. You will be fine and remember better data ahead.
Better days ahead I mean. Please reach out to your family. Talk to someone. You will be fine in Jesus name.

“A big birthday shoutout to my dearest husband @peterpsquare. What a year it’s been. I am grateful to God for your life,” she wrote.
“May God Almighty continue to bless and protect you, may you continue to have good health, may you have long life, happiness, peace of mind and prosperity.”
You correct on this. US govt actually had influence on our 2015 election. They thought that would bring an end to Nigeria but God showed up for Nigeria and make them to be fooled. same with this COVID, God has really made their werd prediction about Africa against them. The US govt. is not a savour as against how many do think.
BabaOwen: If GEJ did what Trump is doing, the whole of Nigeria would have burn. What is happening in the USA right now would have been a child's play to what would have happened in Nigeria. It might have even lead to the fall of Nigeria.
