ODSG Spends N13.4B On Road Projects, Warns Contractors Against Shoddy Jobs. … As Mimiko Flags Off N2.8bn Arakale Dual-Carriageway Project Monday 1st Nov 2010 The Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko on Monday in Akure, the State capital, flagged off the N2.8billion NEPA-Arakale dual-carriage way with the disclosure that the State Government has in the last twenty months paid a whopping sum of N13.4 billion on Performance Certificates on various on-going road projects in the State with a warning to contractors hoping to do shoddy jobs to be ready for stiff sanctions. The governor described the project as long-overdue as well as one of the biggest steps ever taken since the creation of Ondo State in 1976. According to Mimiko, “Dualization of this road is aimed at resolving the chaotic vehicular traffic on the road and to further relieve the Oyemekun-Oba Adesida road of its high vehicular traffic. The contractors and all the parties involved in this project should ensure a timely completion of their jobs and for same to be in accordance with expected specifications and best standards. “This dualization is costing the state government the sum of N2.847 billion, cost of compensation inclusive. It is instructive to know that we have paid all compensations to those already cleared and we shall pay as soon as the clearance for payment is completed. It is expected that a total sum of N1 billion would have been paid at the end of the exercise” the governor stated. On the impact of the project on the socio-economic life of the people, Dr Mimiko explained that the dualization job was part of an on-going exercise at both the beautification and infrastructural transformation of Akure into modern capital. “I am aware that some of my predecessors in office must have looked into the desirability of dualizing this road, but must have been put off probably because of the enormous political capital and social goodwill that might be expended to see it through” the Ondo State helmsman reminisced. The governor equally appreciated the uncommon accommodation shown by the traditional leadership and the people of Akure for the structural demands of modern urban planning as well as indigenes and traders who relocated to pave way for the project. “Let me reiterate that all on-going road contracts both inherited (51 road projects in all) and those awarded by this administration will be seen to completion. I hereby enjoin all road contractors operating in this state to make maximum use of the coming dry season” Mimiko declared. Earlier in his address, the State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Gboye Adegbenro, an Engineer, disclosed that the NEPA-Arakale road dualization project has a total of 2.25kilometers and would be a dual-carriage way of 9.2 meters with of asphalt pavement on each side as well as a 2.4 meters wide concrete pedestrian walk way on either sides. He disclosed that in order to make way for the road project, over 360 buildings would be demolished along the right of way while another 15 building would give way for the establishment of two motor parks. He also disclosed that over 980 traders were affected and would be re-allocated. In his short remarks, the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida expressed the gratitude of the Akure people to the State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko whom he described as the Architect of new Akure saying that the spate of transformation projects being embarked upon by the Governor in Akure was unprecedented. While calling on the people of the town to persevere while the project lasts, the Deji equally enjoined the Governor to ensure that funds were made available for the completion of the project in record time. |
A NEW TOLLED ROAD THAT WOULD REDUCE THE JOURNEY BETWEEN AKURE- LAGOS BY 45 MINUTES WINDOW of respite may have opened for travellers who ply the Ore route, with the emergence last week that three multi-national firms are bidding for the proposed N10billion Ondo Township-Ajegbende Road (Ogun State) dual carriageway. Promoted by the Ondo State government as public partnership scheme, the road project design has been completed while the state authorities are studying documents submitted by the investors who are likely to be one of the contractors. Those already showing interest are two Chinese firms- Messrs CGC Nigeria Limited, CRCC and Strabag Construction Company. Proposed as a joint venture between the government and the contractor, with the two partners contributing equally, the road project on completion will have a tollgate. The 36 kilometre dual carriage way is to link Ondo Township with popular ?J4? and to traverses Laje-Ajegbende area in Ogun state en-route Lagos. Other details, according to senior officials of the government would be unfolded after the contractor is selected. Coming under the state?s urban renewal development, which has taken root in Akure, the state capital, Okitipupa and Ikare, other projects associated with the scheme and completed are ?The Caring Heart Auto-mart Complex,? (CHAC) an ultra modern auto market, located along Owo -Benin Road, Akure, the Akure Ultra Modern Park, the Okitipupa and Ikare modern parks. Similarly, the multi-billion Arakale Road expansion project was kick-started three months ago, other developmental efforts are the expansion of Oba Adesida Road, Akure, and the proposed Ikale-Ajowa Road and Owo township road dualisation, which beneficiaries include the southern part of the state such as Ikale, Ajowa and Ikaramu, up to the border of Kwara State is also to benefit from the project. The contract worth N4.7 billion has been awarded to Borini Prono Company. Another project for the dualisation of Owo township Road, stretching about nine kilometres has also been awarded to CGC construction at the cost of N4.3 billion. The state?s Commissioner for Works, Mr. Gboye Adegbenro, said that the idea to embark on the dualisation of Ondo-Ajegbende Road was to ease the burden of the East and Southeast bound travellers, who, by necessity, had to go through Ore Township. ?Initially, we were contemplating on having overhead bridge at the Ore junction, so that travellers going to Akure, Ondo-Owo Road would take the overhead bridg, but the Federal Government didn?t give the approval. Besides, experience has shown that if the state embarked on such project without approval, it would be difficult to get the money back.? He said that government viewed road as a necessary infrastructure that people of Ondo State were yearning for, ?because socio-economic activities cannot thrive where there is lack of access road. ? Presently in Ondo State, we have almost 46 consultants that are supervising our road projects, while N10 billion was earmarked for the expansion, reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads in Akure, the state capital.? Complimenting the various road projects is the auto-mart complex, located along the Owo-Ilesha Expressway. The complex was designed to accommodate the auto dealers displaced from the heart of Akure Township, where road expansion, beautification and other environmentally related projects are ongoing. The complex that sits on two hectares of land designed to accommodate 1,200 vehicles. The project worth N246 million is sandwiched between two transport related institutions; namely, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Sector Command Office and NNPC Mega Station. Speaking on the project, the Special Adviser to Governor Olusegun Mimiko on Direct Labour, Mrs. Mobolaji Tunde-Suara, a town planner, said two commercial banks; namely, FirstBank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), had indicated their interest to open branches at the complex. On the space hitherto occupied by the traders in the central Akure, he said that the government had decided to redevelop the area by widening the road network, make the necessary provision for right of way, (ROW) while future desire is to turn the areas to Akure Central Business District (ACBD). The Ultra modern park situated along the Ondo Road, valued at N100 million, Suara said that the park would accommodate those that were affected by urban renewal programme while the Akure Park project was designed to have 30 lock-up shops, and had the capacity for 40 vehicles at the loading points. The project that commenced in August 30, 2010 is expected to complete next month, March 2011, while the automart is due for commissioning next week. |
The planned expansion of the Arakale Road in the middle of Akure, the Ondo State capital, into a dual carriageway, will lead to the demolition of 890 shops and 338 buildings, the Chairman, Arakale Relocation Committee, Mr. Akin Adaramola, has said. Adaramola, who is also the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ondo State, however, added that displaced people had been paid compension in August, while some shop owners had been relocated to vacant shops in other markets within Akure. Adaramola said that the state government was looking for a permanent solution to the worsening traffic situation on major roads in Akure as a result of the activities of traders in building materials. The Arakale Road project, according to the state government, is meant to contribute significantly to the beautification and infrastructural transformation of the city into a modern capital. The project, which will cost the state government over N2.8bn, is also aimed at resolving the chaotic vehicular traffic on the road and further relieving the Oyemekun/Oba Adesida Road of traffic pressure. The 7.5-kilometre Arakale road is the fourth major road project embarked upon by the Dr. Olusegun Mimiko administration, following in the footsteps of the rehabilitation/asphalt overlay of the Oyemekun-Adesida-Mobil junction, dualisation of the Mobil-Oba Ile Town-Airport Junction road; and the dualisation of the Itanla Junction-Ademulegun-Yaba-Akure Motor Park in Ondo town. - that bit is in Ondo TownMimiko explained that N2.8bn had been budgeted for the project, out of which N900m was earmarked for the payment of compensation to property owners, who would lose their properties to the expansion of the road. Being handled by Messrs Fountain Construction Company Limited, the project has provision for the installation of street lights, walkways, median, two major car parks and gardens. The governor said that some of his predecessors had looked into the desirability of making the road a dual carriageway but were put off because of the enormous political, capital and social goodwill that were needed to see it through. The governor expressed gratitude to the traditional leadership of Akure for accommodating the structural demands of modern urban planning, and to the indigenes and traders, who had to relocate as a result of the exercise. Mimiko said, ”It is our expectation that the contractors and all parties involved in handling this project will ensure a timely completion of their jobs and for same to be in accordance with expected specifications and best standards.” He gave the assurance that all ongoing road contracts inherited and those awarded by his administration would be seen to completion, noting that, between February 2009 and now, the government had paid about N13.5bn for performance certificates on various road projects in the state. He admonished contractors handling road projects in the state to make maximum use of the coming dry season for the completion of their projects. The state Commissioner for Works, Mr. Gboye Adegbenro, explained that the reconstruction of the Arakale Road into a dual carriageway would give the state capital a face lift and contribute to making it a mega city. According to Adaramola, the government has directed the committee to look for a suitable site for the construction of a building materials village in the outskirt of the town. He added that the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development was already looking into that possibility. |
GOVERNOR Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has flagged off the extension of Owo township road into a dual carriageway. The flag off of the project, which will gulp N3.9 billion out of which N814 million has been paid to the contractor, CGC Construction Company Limited to facilitate the timely completion of the project, is in continuation of the activities marking the second anniversary of the Mimiko administration. Speaking at the ceremony, the governor said his administration's commitment to the provision of infrastructure would be further demonstrated in the next two months with the rehabilitation of more township roads in Owo Local Government Area. He said: “The asphalt overlay of surface dressed roads is ongoing on many of the Owo township streets while many had even been completed, costing N537 million. The decision to dualise this township road is to resolve the chaotic vehicular traffic within the metropolis to bring relief to road users. “We have reiterated our election promises to transform the infrastructural landscape of this state and this is a pointer to our resolve to extend this gesture to all towns of this state. Let me again assure you that we shall not relent in this effort as many more roads shall be constructed and upgraded to befitting status.” In his address, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Gboye Adegbenro (an engineer), said the 14.8 kilometre Emure Ile-Iyere Road would be completed in three phases. Mimiko also commissioned five other developmental projects in both Owo and Ose local government areas including town halls and local government legislative quarters, Owo |
This man should get the accolades of the best Governor in Nigeria without a shadow of doubt. On like most Governors that spend 90% of the income accrued to their state on the state capital and yet “at that” nothing to show for, Mimiko is going about it in very holistic and admiringly way taken every community, town and villages along with him. The 4 big towns of Akure, Ondo Town, Owo Town and Okitipupa Town are all having and experincing a face-lift and a new lease of life with huge dual-carriage roads tearing open the heart of those town’s narrow roads that has been a pivotal part of the terrain of these provincial towns from time memorial, the roads are widened the towns are all wearing a new modern look. He is also building a new modern tolled Dual Carriage road from Ondo Town to somewhere in Ogun State, this new road would shave 45 minutes from journey between Akure and Lagos. What Mimiko is doing is commendable and inspirational, bringing and spreading development and the proceeds of democracy all around, to be sincere this kind of development is unprecedented in the annals of the state in particular and in Nigeria in general. I love his style, surely he deserve the name he is called and known as “Iroko” which means some sort of rock of “ Gilberter”, he is his own man and he is developing the whole state as one unit in unison. More Kudo’s to Mimiko I hope the new Governors coming in within the next two weeks can borrow a leaf from this strategic thinking and a true democrat. |

You feel like critisizing for critisizing sake em? I thought you knew all. this time you displayed a dismal performance and gallivanting ignoranceThank you sir, |
Mr. Knowall can you tell us more about the "forensic" way they should have looked at it? Sounds new to meSince they have gone the way of the tolls, the only way to avoid a gridlocked VI is to start building multi story car parks around VI and charge commuters and I am sure that would hit a lot of workers wallets more because they would not only be paying for petrol to drive down, they would pay for the tolls, and also be paying to park all day. On a second thought, I suppose it makes more sense for the Government to go down the toll road way because of the peculiarities of the Nigerian terrain, it is impossible to enforce congestion charge in Lagos when there are no valid and authentifiable database tying a car to a particular person in a particular address and location. |
I don't see a rail line happening on the Lekki Axis in the next 30 years.I agree with you. The toll gate has defeated any valid reason why a a train line should be constructed between Ajah-Lekki- VI. But what the govement failed to realize was the income stream generated from the trains with the complimentary income from a congestion charge scheme at VI would be more than any income they hope of realising from toll gates. Of what use is the tolls if say 50,000 cars travel everyday from Lekki to VI without adequate parking facilities for those vechiles, obviously that is a prime ingredient and recipee for a gridlocked city around VI. I think the decison to hurrily construct those toll gates in the first place was a poor and hasten strategy that was not looked at forensically. |
FG should descend on them heavily with all the military power available.Military can only fight an enemy they know and can see. This is an intelligence war, we need to step up our game in the intelligence community of nations. |
Any group that can hold a state or country into ransom means that state or country is a failed state. Can you imagine a Spartan group of individuals killing people at random in America or Britain and the culprits have not been caught? We in Nigeria should change our security approach; we need to have a very strong under-cover intelligence gathering service independent of the Army, Navy , Air force and even police. They should be able to go into any of the services and investigate. For instance someone bombed Abuja, the culprits are still at large, we need a hands-on intelligence gathering operatives that would nip any trouble in the bud b4 it becomes a currency. Strong Intelligence force Their job is to go into trouble spots blend in, discover and monitor all the activities of various nefarious groups and their sponsors and report back to base. Operatives may pose as road side cigarette sellers, suya seller, an imam or even okada rider, no country in the world can win war against terrorist without a robust intelligence service. Bin Ladin was taken down after the Americans had observed him for 8 months in Pakistan we need a superb intelligence service. |
Can someone seriously tell me one project the FG has completed since Yardua / Goodluck took over. 1. Yeah I just remember one “Amenesty” Are there any others.? ![]() |
Odili should cover himself with shame. Amechi is doing wonders, at times it is better to massage the egos of our leaders so that they can perform and not think of themselves all the time. |
He put the performance of 2009 and 2010 at 30 and 31 per cent respectivelyIt simply means most Governors are effective in the first two years of their regime. Year three they start thinking of second term and by year 4, they down tools completely, saving all money’s for the election battle ahead. Looks like what we have in most cases is a responding Governor for 2 years. |
The Mono-rail Project that bit the dust by the man who promised Nigerians power in 56 years time. Calabar, Nigeria. A 12-km monorail is being planned for Calabar, a city in south eastern Nigeria. The Cross River State government has signed a $25 million contract with the Africa Export Import Bank to build the monorail. The line will link Margaret Ekpo International Airport with the new Tinapa Business Resort and Free Trade Zone. Governor Donald Duke stated "This monorail link is being put in place to ensure continued free movement of vehicular traffic within the Calabar metropolis regardless of the expected inflow of over 3 million visitors annually to Tinapa." If successful, it is hoped that the system will be expanded in the future. Calabar has an estimated population of 1.2 million residents and the number one tourist destination city in Nigeria. |
Custodian of Imo State treasury na go hear wen, when the man finnish with una!! |
I've gone through the article. it is not that inspiring. Aliyu Modibo was more favourably disposed to the Boulevard Project. That was why he cried openly when he received his sack Letter from Mr President. Media People blamed him then that it was because he will be jobless after relinquishing the plumb officeThe Boulevard is on hold at the moment, the number one priority in Abuja are as follows 1. CCTV - after the bombings cctv cameras installed in different parts of the city has assumed priority number one. 2. The Mono –Rail is the 2nd priority 3. The Boulevard if private finance is forth-coming |
see information regarding Abuja Bolulevard, looks like the gist from this article some Americans from Dallas are ready to invest. http://allafrica.com/stories/201011160727.html |
Those 2 are idiooots if you cannot win in the ward in front of your house how is it possible for u to win anywhere else in the state. All over Nigeria I think Akala has the most loyal following and he should capitalise on that, I see him going to the senate if he so desires in 2015. |
I thot Lagos also had it's own rail project. Or does it not cover VI / Lekki axis?No it does not cover VI axis at the moment. Probably stage 2 of the development cycle which only God knows when that would happen. The only way to decongest a city is to tax people from bringing-in their private vechiles into the city. Everyone in London has a car but nobody in his right mind would dear drive into central London. |
Whilst Rotimi Amechi and the authorities in Abuja are going about their mono-rail projects steadily without hindrance, it appears Messers Fashola is more interested in building a phantom airport at Lekki, a project 95% of his constituents would never use or ever bother to use in their life time. Why Can’t Fashola think of a train link between Ajah- Lekki and VI. He should implement a policy where a congestion charge would be applicable to all cars that drives into VI thereby encouraging thousands of commuters to use the train. I think that should be the way forward as per transportation on the Island. |
In less than a year of his tenure, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Sen. Bala Mohammed has shown a deep commitment to three major projects in the Federal Capital. The first is the Abuja Boulevard project, the security-enhancing CCTV project and the Monorail project designed to ease the growing transportation gridlock in the nation’s seat of government. Why he should be commended for taking the decisive step towards the realisation of the long-delayed Abuja Boulevard project, the business and entertainment hub of the Federal Capital whose benefits are multi-faceted, he also needs to be applauded for his decision to fast-track the installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system in Abuja inorder to check the activities of criminals, following the security challenges posed by the bomb blasts of October and December 2010. With his recent pronouncements, it is obvious that the Abuja Light Rail (ALR) project which it is hoped would provide the long term solution to the capital city’s transportation problems, is set for determined execution afterall. There is no doubt that he attaches priority to the multi-billion-naira project which he has assured that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration is committed to completing on schedule. Already, the tempo of execution on the project has been intensified considering its importance to the economic turnaround of the entire Federal Capital Territory and the country at large. Under the watch of Senator Bala Mohammed, land acquisition enumeration and compensation of economic trees as well as building structures on the Right Of Way at Idu Depot/Dry inland container port area; Ring road I, Idu, Gwagwa/Dei-Dei, Kagini and about 4 kilometres into Kubwa have been completed while laying of tracks are expected to begin in earnest as rail tracks have started arriving at the Idu depot. It is reassuring however, that as many as 125,000 concrete sleepers have been produced, which experts say are sufficient for 25 kilometres of double tracks while 120,000 square meters of ballast standard rail track gravel have been produced which is sufficient for 35 kilometres of track right of way. To underscore its seriousness in tackling the challenges in the transportation sector, the FCT Administration has concluded arrangement to organise Transportation Investors’ Summit to take care of other transportation facilities that are part of the integrated transportation programme of the Federal Capital Territory. The Abuja Monorail project would be the first of its kind in West Africa. It was developed for mass transportation within the Abuja metropolis and the satellite settlements. It will not only help solve the mass transport problems in the city, it will also create job opportunities. It is similar in concept to the Port Harcourt Monorail project introduced by the Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration in Rivers State, which will run on the Intamin P30 Monorail Train, an electric driven train designed and most suitable for commuter services in cities as seen in some parts of Europe. It is characterised by modern design, spacious cabins and is equipped with large doors for easy access for all passengers particularly those with luggage. The monorail railway system in Abuja was originally conceived to be executed as a partnership involving the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Intamin Transportaion Ltd and Ponet Nigeria Ltd. To ensure quick take off of the system, a committee chaired by erstwhile FCT transportation secretary, Mr. Segun Awolowo was set up, with the directors of engineering, Sylvester Ugonabo, Development Control, Yahya Sani, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Kenneth Okafor, co-ordinator, Abuja Infrastructure Investment Centre, Hassan Muhammadu, Managing Director, Abuja Investment Ltd, Dr. Abdul Mukhtar and Director , Urban and Regional Planning as members. The rail system which will drastically reduce problems of transportation in the Federal Capital Territory, is designed to have stop stations at Katampe, Bwari exit, Kubwa, Dei Dei and Zuba for the convenience of the passengers along Kubwa road, while the Berger to Gwagwa Karmo route would also have similar substations along the routes. What started as a promise in 2007 by former FCT minister Aliyu Moddibbo followed in 2008 by his successor Adamu Aliero, appears to be gathering steam after-all. Aliero had in 2008 declared that the city’s road traffic problems were about to be solved through the provision of LRT and that the line would be operational by 2013. The ex-minister had promised after the $US840 billion contract was awarded, that the main metro station is to be located around the national stadium, while other sub stations would be in Kubwa and Gwagwalada. Two years down the road, the project is now about 20 per cent completed, with over 90 per cent of detailed engineering design including aerial and ground control survey, bridges and culverts completed, with an assurance that Lots I & III of the project would surely be achieved on or before 2013 as envisaged in the work plan. Again, it will not be out of place to commend the Bala Mohammed administration for once again taking a bold step to open up an issue many were already writing off as an abandoned project. Considering its strategic importance in the socio-economic well being of the FCT, the rail project can be regarded as priority. One hopes its realization will be pursued with the same zeal that he has revived it. http://www.leadershipnigeria.com/ns/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=26413:fct-minister-and-the-abuja-monorail-project&catid=86:opinion&Itemid=181 |
