Politics › Re: Foi Act In Trouble by KnowAll(m): 5:24pm On Jun 12, 2011
Why is it that things that work so simply in other climes are always made complex in Nigeria? I am completely disappointed at SERAP and have lost the little respect I had for them for this shameless request for information, FOI laws have been inn existence in other nations for so many years so I expected to learn how to make requests for information if they had no idea how it is done. No law, including the FOI gives you the power to issue ULTIMATUM to the government over an information or to go about WARNING the government to release any information to you. Indeed, FOI requests are to be kept as simply, concise and as clear as possible. You simply request for the information you need and allow the government or relevant body to decide whether they want to release the info or not. If they refuse, you go to court. so why issue EMPTY threats?
Mr Poster there is a time line on FOI request. I did the course about 3 months ago in my organisation. In the UK you must acknowledge the letter on receiving the letter and then reply within 2 weeks. If you require more time you must inform the petitioner for more time.

T
he article clearly states that the petition to the Vice President was dated March 15th 2011. That was a long time before Bankole's defeat at the polls. For someone with the moniker 'KnowAll' you certainly don't read articles in detail.
Do you know how many petitions I have written, your suggestion Nigeria authorities would confront a man who is a sitting legislator over some spurious allegation after winning his election is laughable. See how you betrayed and discredited your already flawed write up.

These clowns are using Awolow's legacy and the Tribune to attack and call people names everyday and they got a single response from one writer and everybody is rolling on the floor.

What about the people they attack everyday? Who's standing up and yelling fairness on their behalf? I guess we we should just sit and take their attacks, get called all kinds of names because they are the privileged Awolow family.

They really are lucky that's all the got from that writer.

The only reason they get a pass for their BS is because of Awolow, but they are not going to hold the SW hostage because of that name.

About the silly FCT position, that's non of our business, that's between him and his crooked and corrupt friends in Abuja.
My write up cannot be more flawed than Mr Omatsheye's who wants to justify the pittance Tinubu is paying him and obviously probably wants a pat in the back for throwing the dirt on the Awolowos, I am sure Tinubu would have thanked him enormously for a job well done. And I am also sure the Awolowos must have severely warned their wards not to approach Tinubu for any favour by the matriarch less that person would be humiliated like the Abiolas when one of them sought out Mr Oshoba to seek his approval and blessing to run for the House of Reps, but to the Abiolas shock he was summarily and unceromoniously turned down in favour of Mr Oshoba's younger and inexperience son.

Mr Segun Awolowo has a job like millions of poor Nigerians have a job and if for any reasons the powers that need be wants to promote him to ministerial level all well and good. He would and I am sure like millions of Nigerians embrace it with open hands after all what is the point of working in a place if you cannot get to the zenith of the place, nobody wants to be stationery in Life. undecided

The Death of MKO has made his kids political orphans. We all saw how one of the Abiolas was played out during the last election, the Abiola son lost the ACN nomination ticket for the house of reps to a young single boy who happened to be Mr Oshoba's son.  The Tinubu selection style was used in all its efficacy to exclude those in their deluded minds were believed to be enemies of the new status quo.

I have a feeling Tinubu and Oshoba have a kick unnerving the Abiolas and the Awolowos,  anyway one should not be surprise many of us would do the same thing if given half a chance to humiliate someone who we have looked up to for years

If we are having Ecowas let us have proper Ecowas with all the benefits. I can go to france and buy my cement and nobody would hold me or charge me descriminately. If cement is N700 Naira in Cotonu, Nigerians should be allowed to go to that country and purchase it for that price without attarcting any tax or a minimal tax let say N50 Naira for every bag bought thereby costing the importer N750.00 FROM Cotonou.

This would force Dangote and other oligarchs to drop their prices saving everyone these unecessary hassle of over-inflated prices

To be sincere you would never know the true worth of anything in Nigeria if you keep on plucking figures from the air. Let the market forces determine the price, how many people have these kind of money banded about in a poor country like Nigeria. Well I don't blame those people going about and snapping up properties at ridiculous prices when our stuupid banks would borrow them the money at the end of the day if the banks are not making money CBN would come and bail them out.  undecided

I know how much I have lost in Oceanic Bank and despite Sanusi's clamp down are our stuupiid banks are still not borrowing state goverment's stupendious amount of money. We can't continue running a country like that.  huh

Secondly how come the owners of the property only came out now shouting" blue murder" medicine after death I would say, if Mr Bankole had won his election and returned to the House of Reps would all these drama be unfolding. I beg, how come we are not hearing anything from the Senate end of things, do you people seriously think the SPEAKER OF the House of Reps would unilatarally go and collect loans without the Senate President doing like-wise, if they don't let this lye it would drag every one of them down from Mr Senate President , to Mr President unless Bankole wants to take the flak and protect the others.  lipsrsealed

We should stop giving people positions because of their names, their father came from obscurity to become the best leader yorubas have ever had, what is sauce for the midas should be sauce for the mendicant. We need true federalism, we need to be able to control our destinies within the country called Nigeria, we do not need handouts, they can give those positions to other tribes, as long as we can develop at our own pace and with the co-operation of all the ethnic groups we have welcomed in our region we are okay. SW o ni baje oooooooooooo.
Forget SW for a moment and put yourself in that man's shoe and forget about his surname for a moment. If you were the one working in that kind of environment what would be your short term goal in that organisation. Obviously without mincing words and not been a mind reader every aspiring worker would like to take over from their oga one day. I suppose Segun Awolowo would not be any different having such natural aspirations and damn right he has a right to have such desire whether he is an Awolowo or not. huh

Akala obviously is not in my wildest imagination close to any of the performing Governors like Fashola, Amechi or Apkabio but when u compare him against those who have ruled Oyo State since 1999, he is the best of a bad lot. Don't forget many of the past Governors did not have the chance of having a second term. One was even impeached half-way through in his first term.

Sold for 4 fricking billion ? Painting that building alone costs more than that amount. These guys have stolen so much from this poor country

Because it is skyscraper don't be deceived. 1. it is not a modern building, 2. it would need a lot of work on it to bring it to the 21st century. N4 billion is about right. I wonder why can't we have a public auction houses carrying out such sale. A place where people would bid openly for government and ANY other asset openly without fear or favour. Our transactions in Naija are always shrouded in secrecy. We should embrace open bidding, it is more democratic and transparency is clear and concise to all concerned.

A minister should be appointed based on proven track record and the ability to deliver and not because his name is Awolowo or Ogendengbe!
Don't you think it is a two way street I mean your position. What makes you think a man just because his name is Awolowo is not over-qualified for the post of Minister for Abuja than someone who is not in the system at all. The guy has learned his trade and it is only natural for someone to get a promotion sooner rather later. If he is interested I don't see any reasons why he can't throw his hat in the ring.

IF Ojukwu's wife that resides in Nigeria can be diaspora special adviser to the President why not Segun Awolowo that has been in the same place for almost 6 years now

Politics › Compensate Awo By Giving Fcta Ministerial Appointment To Segun Awolowo by KnowAll(op): 10:41am On Jun 12, 2011
Note- I am not holding court for Mr Awolowo, neither have I met him b4 or seeing him in flesh,  becos I know our people on NL, they would start asking silly questions of how much did he pay u, this is  just a thought from an independent free thinker.

Mr Segun Awolowo has served 2 or 3 Ministers as a commisioner in the FCTA, I think it is about time Mr Goodluck compensate these young man( not too sure wheter to use that term as the gentleman in question is knocking on 50 years) with either the Junior Minister Position of the FCTA OR THE  FULL Minister position, I would prefer the latter thus,  beacuse I believe a Southerner should be the next Minister of the FCTA and administering a supposedly neutral City like Abuja should be every Nigerians right irrespective of tribe, religion or race.

The man has done enough apprentice in that region, he served in differnt departments and to the best of my knowledge would be quite on the know of what that city requires going forward. The second reason is the Awolowo family has really gotten A RAW and BAD kicking on the teeth by that recent write up by Mr omatsheye with his diatribe,  misplaced and one-sided rantings about this holy grail Yoruba family.

His article lacked objectivity and can only be viewed as a loyal servant who does not want to un-ruffle the hand that feeds him perhaps he might get a pay rise by getting himself embroiled in an un-charted and controversial territory. The fact that some well known Awoist and even siblings of that family would not stoop low and beg Tinubu for party nominations does not make them all  shallow, un-ambitious and un-motivational people.

Mr Omatsheye said that since papa Awolowo died nothing good has come out of his siblings. In any other democracy when someone has been in an organisation for sometime(Mr Awolowo has been working for the FCTA for sometime now)  the likelihood of promotion to the next level would be the natural progressive thing to expect but for some reasons every Nigeria leader has always nominated a Northerner for this post of the Minister of the FCTA, thereby forgetting that in the 1960's Yardua's father was the Minister for Lagos and nobody raised a ruse or riot over that, so what is the big deal a Southerner heading FCTA.  huh

I think to prove Mr Omatsheye wrong and to make Southerners and especially SWesterner's perceived loss in the speakership race a more bearable and Palatable pain(not that I feel any pain about what happened in the House but some do and to placate those dissenting voices)  Mr Awolowo's promotion to that of a full Minister should be a welcome development. This Promotion more than anyting cannot be seeing as favourtism or nepotism but a promotion of a person who has learned the trade of administering Abuja by paying his due to society by serving 3 FCTA Ministers diligently without discord, I hope Mr President is taking note and would be brave enough to make an informed decision and put Mr Omatsheye's theory and thesis to shame.  undecided

1b?
This figure sounds incredible. Is/was that in a single account in a single bank?  Isn't that over N1.5trillion? How much is the House' budget for all the years he headed it
That was the figure banded about, every social gathering I went to people would start "did you hear how much was found in Bankole's protégées account", in fact when I first heard it I felt like jumping into a plane and fly to Nigeria armed with a fully loaded AK47 to do honours of emptying the whole hot lead on him. I am a bit amused by some of the charges read out in court detailing what Mr Bankole has being up to whilst at the helm of his speakership. one of them read as thus" buying 25 flat screen TV for N520,000.00 per peice when it should be about N250,000.00."  undecided  What the fuccck  is that all about, what happened to the N1 Billion Dollars discovered in UBA that made my blood boil with uncontrollable rage. One would have taught that would be the first item on the charge list because such a charge would make any Judge's jaw drop not this little inflated prices that most Nigerians are accustomed to. Our Igbo brothers are always buying something in China and sell to us at  X4 the price, "that one no be thief na business" . embarassed

I am hoping, this early charges are just pre-ambles or testing the water or better still salivating our apeptite for the biggie. I hope so, even the N10 Billion loan he took he has given a rather weak but plausible, reasonable and probably not acceptable way of how the money was disbursed. The money was meant to be supplementary increamnet on the allowances the legislators have penned down for themselves, obviously this increase was not captured in the budget hence the reason why he had to go the loan route and he did mention that his allowances and those of his deputy where not increased in tandem, his remained at N100 Million a quarter whilst that of his deputy stood at 80Million per quarter.

So why is Bankole still apprehended, looks like there is no case here, nobody is talking about the $1 billion dollars abi "Mr President get intrest in this amount"  lipsrsealed  ,  looks like everyone has gone silence on the meat of the matter concentrating more on a useless bone and caracas.

I beg Judge let him loose tommorrow, not guilty as charge.  huh undecided

Zoning is cruel. Since Mr Tambuwel won the speakership on behalf of the NW, what that means is, he has an added task of not only representing the views, yearnings and aspirations of the NE but also of the SW. We should be seen to encourage our leaders not to look at elective stewardship and responsibility from the narrow gauge prism of one's region but from the wider perspective of collective responsibility. If our leaders cannot shoulder this mundane and expected responsibility then on what basis should we call ourselves Nigerians since we cannot be our brothers keeper.

I do not have a qualms and neither would I worry myself about his election what I and millions of Nigerians care about is Mr Tambuwal needs to be indoctrinated and made aware that the position he has won carries with it a weighty responsibility of an "ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary" if he is found wanton when carrying out his responsibility or he is found to be undermining one of his core constituents which in this case would be the NW, NE and SW he risked being removed from the post.

We need to grow up in Nigeria and more than anything our political leaders needs to grow up fast.

What is shameful there, let us talk the truth there is no point hiding under a tribal cloak of being my brothers keeper because he is a Yoruba man(me self I be Yoruba man). The man has the best Hotel in Lagos today as it stands, he gets enormous cut from taxes in Lagos, Hi-tec the company that infamously built roads in Lekki for 1 Billion a km is inextricably linked to Messer’s Tinubu.

God Knows how much the FG gave him for throwing in the towel or a license to rig election during the Presidential. No doubt about that, Tinubu is a billionaire in dollars, if Otedola can be a billionaire from his father’s one stint as Lagos State Governor (Not Saying his Father made him a Billionaire) how much more Tinubu and Fashola with their 12years stint and still counting, they own all the prime lands in that city, you see “ Eko Atlantic City” if other Nigerians from the EAST and North don’t invest a Penny in this project, Tinubu and his boys would build it no shaking. I think that kind of ivestment is good for Nigeria. What of IBB that has an estate in Egypt Sham-ul-sheik or whatever that place is called, I would have preferred he invested in Nigeria and not some foreign country.

The guy is already a billionaire in Dollars it just a matter of time he would surpass Dangote. No wonder Dimeji won still $1 billion dollars.

Alao-Akala: The making of a new Ibadan city

| Print | E-mail
Written by Israel Asaju
Sunday, 19 September 2010

HAVING lived all my life in Ibadan , the Oyo State capital city, I am convinced to say that I understand Oyo State more than any other state in the whole of Nigeria .

Although not an Ibadan person by blood, and neither can I claim to be a citizen of Oyo State – given our rigid definition of citizenship in Nigeria – but, if the saying that home is anywhere one lives is anything to go by, then I am a son of the soil.

As a primary school pupil, I attended a school called Pupils Primary School , somewhere along the New Adeoyo Road , in Ibadan , and from there proceeded to the prestigious Government College Ibadan for my secondary school education. My university education took me to the University of Ibadan , where I had my first degree and a Masters degree.

Even now, I work with a company based in Ibadan and I have been living in the city all the days of my life.

So, even if I am not an indigene by blood definition, I am a native of Ibadan by socialization, which makes me qualified to pass a commentary on the development of the state (perhaps more than some other indigenes who merely rely on media commentaries to have a feel of what is happening in Oyo State.)

I also need to mention my age in order to give perspective to whatever I say on this public forum.

I was born in 1976; incidentally the same year Oyo State was created.

As a kid in 1979 into the early 80s, I could recollected that there was a popular face on our TV set at that time, and I grew to identify that face as that of the late Chief Bola Ige, who I also knew from narration, was the first civilian governor of Oyo State.

Throughout my growing up in Ibadan , development in the city was rigidly stagnant.

Without any fear of contradiction, I can confidently say that anyone who left the city of Ibadan in 1990 for instance, and returned in say, 2005, could not find any difficulty in reconnecting with the city, fifteen years after.

Reason: there was no physical development which could have redefined the outlook of the city. It was that bad.

The roads in Ibadan used to look the same boring way without anything new being added.

Not only that. There were no beautiful public buildings around town to suggest that the business environment was also flourishing.

In the entire stretch of the Ring Road where I spent my childhood years for instance, there were only two edifices which were the Crown Trust Building and the Capital Building, which is now a zonal office of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). But now, things have changed, tremendously too.

For sure, it will be impropitious to credit one political administration for all the changes that have come to Ibadan particularly since 1999 to date.

But the truth of the matter is that put on the same measuring scale, I think the present Alao-Akala government has out-paced the previous two administrations of Governor Lam Adesina (1999-2003) and Rashidi Ladoja (2003-2007) in developing Oyo State, and Ibadan particularly.

While one cannot deny the fact that other previous administrations too did laudable projects especially in the area of road construction; neither of them, however, ever made a conscious effort in opening up the inner roads in Ibadan city, and by so doing, establish a nexus between infrastructural development and socio-economic regeneration, like the Alao-Akala administration is doing.

The first point of reference is the construction of the outer Ring Road which connects Oluyole Estate to New Garage, down to Apata, and Eleyele. The plan for the construction of the outter Ring Road had been there ever since the creation of Oyo State , but previous administrations have cleverly kept the plan in the folder.

The significance of this road is to reduce the burden on the first Ring Road, such that cars coming from Apata, for example, will not have to go through the Odu-Ona, Akinyemi juction.

Now, it is possible to connect New Garage from Oluyole Estate without coming out to the first Ring Road. That was the intentions of planners of the Ibadan City.

Apart from constructing the Outter Ring Road, one other road of significant importance in Ibadan is the dualisation of the Molete-Oke-Bola-J.Allen-Queen Cinema-Adamasingba road.

The importance of this road is that the colonial settlers in Ibadan had designed this route which links to Lebanon Street as the commercial nerve-centre of the city. This is because the Lebanese were the major traders in the early days of cosmopolitan Ibadan city.

That is why that all the major indigenous markets in Ibadan like the Agbeni market, the Ogunpa market, the old Gbagi market, all cluster around this route.

In contemporary time too, many commercial banks and federal institutions like the Ibadan Branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) are sited along the route.

Apart from these two critical road network, there are lots other road projects in Ibadan such that I often tell my friends, who reside in Lagos, that there is no luxury they enjoy as far as good road network is concerned that we in Ibadan are deprived of. That is the plain truth.

Apart from road construction, the Alao-Akala government has also refurbished the major public hospitals in the state like the Old Adeoyo Hospital , the New Adeoyo Hospital and the Oni and Sons Paediatrics Hospital. In many of these hospitals, especially, the Old Adeoyo Hospital which was established over a century ago, nothing new was added to it until now under the Alao-Akala administration.

Another significant change in Ibadan is the gradual and steady phase off of old mass transit buses known as Danfo. Now, all over Ibadan we have city cabs, some of which are solely private sector run, while others are in form of partnership between the public and the private sector.

In all, Ibadan may not yet be like the Mega City of Lagos, but a lot is changing in the development of the city of Ibadan , much thanks to the Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, who is also often referred to as the Uncommon Governor (Oyato Governor).

That is a son of the soil TALKING, ALTHOUGH like myself not an Ibadan Indigene but just like this WRITER, I did MY primary, secondary and Uni in that City, including Service, so this gentleman has given what I can call a fair assessment of Akala's stewardship, we would hope Ajimobi would raise the goal post further, otherwise Akala would do a " Kwankwoso" in Oyo State.
