lol i thot as much too. I noticed his penchant for looking out for fellow whites too.
The problem is a white man sticks out like a sore thumb in Nigeria. Nigeria should be proud of its uniqueness in Africa where the Nigerian runs everything from small scale businesses to large scale conglomerate like Dangote Industries, the same cannot be said of a lot of African countries.

The Chinese are involve in petty retailing in Ghana and Cameroon but not in Naija we should be proud of our independence, ours is a proper independence and not some neo-colonial outpost to Brits, Chinese, sysrians, Lebanese OR Indians

There is so much disorganisation, hence if you offer some semblance of order, people would pay a fortune for it.
That's what the Eko Atlantic City is about. The initiators of the project see an opportunity to offer an oasis of order in the midst of all the chaos.
All the lovers of order would spend a fortune to live in the orderly new city.

Seeing Nigeria for what it is could be relative. One person(Optimist) sees a cup half full, the other person(Pessimist) sees it half empty.

I agree with u on this point.

Eko Atlantic City would be an oasis of normalty in disorganise Nigeria. Even though 99% of us will not be able to live there, it would be something to savour, and boast to the world that we have a first class city compared to the best on any part of the world. This will bring a degree of satisfaction even to the poorest Nigerians when discuss of the prevalent squalour and filth is talked about. I don't suppose the poor will need a visa to go their hence it being ours as the poor will man the bars, the hotel lobbies and be cooks in the luxurious flats built there. There would be house boys and house girls, gate men and porters to tend and pamper their bosses every wish.

The new city will be a healthy juxtaposition of the down and trodden living with the high and mighty, albeit the down and trodden occupying the boys quarte's and other servant abodes. The city will not funtion properly with a strata of society going it alone, both the poor and rich will have to work in unison and I am sure both are looking forward to this development with anticipation of something unusual and spectacular.

Nigeria in general and Lagos especially surely needs Eko Atlantic City.

Ohakim over to you, na your capital the man dey yap like, shame on you Mr Governor. shocked

I found myself in Owerri, a city of more than 225,000 people on the northern lip of Nigeria’s Delta Region.

Massive piles of stinking, rotting garbage lined the middle of Owerri’s main road. These half-dozen piles were the size of tractor trailers, and now a bucket-loader was laboring to remove them. The odor was piquant and nauseating, like diapers and death. The thousands of people crammed in proximity to this Third World urban landfill seemed oblivious, or at least resigned, to the stench.

At least Calabar representing well. I find the highligted really funny. grin

Calabar was, though, a decided step up from Abeokuta and Onitsha and Aba and the other cities. We entered the city two days earlier, down a broad and handsome four-lane boulevard that looked almost Western. I would see municipal trash baskets and streetlights and police directing traffic and a fast food outlet called Mr. Bigg’s, with relatively good food. But these niceties were not to be found in the center, where we lodged, full of lunatic traffic and garbage-filled open sewers.

IMG_2627From Marina Resort, we hopped another set of moto taxis for a 15-minute ride to the outskirts of town. Out here, I would see a handful of old, rusted signs on each street block for all sorts of churches and religious congregations. Other signs for little eateries advertised bush meat. Jerry led us to a hotel and resort where he did odd jobs. I couldn’t figure out why, until I learned he lived just a few blocks away. He wanted to introduce us to his family.

We made our way down a dusty street to a low, concrete building full of passageways. This was Jerry’s unassuming home. He opened the door to a tiny bedroom. A shirtless man and a woman in a nightgown were lying in bed. An air conditioner was running and they were watching TV. They got up to greet us, and I thought, What the hell am I doing in this guy’s bedroom?!

Nigeria, with 140 million people Africa’s most populous nation, struck me as the black sheep of the continent. The description of the country in my Lonely Planet guide didn’t seem far off: “As a travel destination, Nigeria seems more a place to avoid than book a flight to. … Challenging yet exuberant, this is Africa in the raw – there’s nowhere quite like it on the continent.”

A FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR OUR CORRUPT LEADERS AND THOSE WHO WANT OUR VOTES NEXT YEAR.  undecided

Outside Abeokuta, I saw a man sitting in the middle of a huge pile of garbage. Just sitting there. I saw another man, unclothed and slack-jawed, sitting at the edge of a city street. Cars and trucks and buses and motos edged uncarefully around him. His expression was completely vacant, catatonic.

***
IMG_2567It wasn’t just the highways and cities of Nigeria that didn’t make sense. The whole country was a knot of contradictions -- upside down and inside out, like the black and white negative of an old Kodak filmstrip. Nigeria is crisscrossed by more power lines than a Godzilla movie, yet electric service is sporadic across the nation. It is Africa’s largest oil-producing nation, yet fuel stations were often empty of gasoline and diesel and kerosene, or jammed with long queues of waiting vehicles.

This na real Yabbing oh cry

in Abeokuta, I looked in vicarious horror at hundreds of people jammed onto a narrow strip of pavement, between a wall and an open sewer, and the absurdly coagulated traffic at sewer’s edge. The people just sat there, perhaps hoping for a coin to be tossed from the stalled traffic. My God! I thought. Why are those people crammed together like that, so wretchedly, in such filth?

Nothing in Morocco or Burkina Faso or Ghana, nor any Latin American city through which I had ridden, was comparable to the chaos of a Nigerian city. It was unreal, and made all the more unreal by the incongruous sight of Migo and his sleek, loaded adventure bike inching along in front of me, traffic and people crushing him from all sides. He looked as out of place here as a supermodel in a leper colony.

People stared at us. Young men, swarthy and broad-faced and shirtless, their muscular black torsos glistening with sweat, hooted at us with a macho verve I had not heard in countries past. Men on motos gave us leering smiles, as if in satisfaction at the shock we were experiencing. Some wore the silliest little blue hardhat helmets, which, unstrapped beneath their chins, would fly off at the first hint of a collision. “I want your bike!” a moto dude would holler. “We trade, huh?”

I felt as if I was in an alternative universe devoid of sense and reason and order and decorum. It seemed imperative to get through and get out of this vortex. Though I would regret it later, I took no compelling photos of the chaos I observed in urban Nigeria. If I did so, I reasoned, I would have lost Migo, and we would have the hassle of reuniting. I would be instantly surrounded by people; the idea of taking of my camera seemed wholly inappropriate, to do what – document the miserable conditions in which they spent their days?

IMG_2652It wasn’t just Owerri. It was each large Nigerian through which we passed – Abeokuta and Ijebu Ode and Benin City and Onitsha and Aba. I had read guidebooks that even average-size Nigerian cities were monstrosities, but that benign description did not prepare me for what I would see.

There is a difference between beating and discipline, beating with evidence of self infliction has no place in any mordern society, even thus I went through that maybe once OR twice during my childhood and the fact that I can count it with my finger tips the number time this kind toture was inflicted on my being, speaks volume it simply justifies the irrelevance of this kind of brutality in today's world, it is evident this kind of vile bullying and outright cruelty should be halted and discourage in all it ramifications. ( half the time adults who cannot hold their own with their mates vent their fustrations on their poor kids)

The one that did the trick are the subtle displine antics like putting up your hands or kneeling down and closing your eyes, these are the drills that actually imbibe the do's and don'ts and how I should conduct myself in society not Koboko. In fact Koboko's should be outlawed.

and that is why RIbadu is a bit cautious. His political career would be dead on arrival if he runs and fails in the first hurdle in 2011. He will not get a look-in come 2015 OR 2019 especially if he decides to jump ship and join PDP after miserably failing in 2011 with AC , that would be tantanmount to political prostitution, we all know political ashewos don't have a future in Naija.

Argentina getting walloped by Germany and England oblitrated by Germany, the Nigerian Presidency has either realise his folly in banning a team who only loss because of indicipline and not for their lack of skill.

One can see the wonderful wide roads built in Benin by Oshimolue, kudos to him, but one thing I found rather worrying is the level of poverty as portrayed graphically in that picture, for every 20 Okada's on the road there is just one car, who are those wide avenues for, it can surely be for those macrbe men on bikes, it has to be for the very few elites, perharps the Governor and his entourage. huh

Citizenry empowerment is one menace, every goverment should address, and the first step at archieving this universal and civic right is by giving those working what can be termed livable wages. Even if there is draught of un-employment in the region, those working, should not also be on slaves wages, they should be on good livable wages. This ignored fact is almost always the reason why there is a middle class in most developed Countries but one area the Nigerian Goverments both States and the Fed's have ignored for so long.

The Middle Class are the engine room of any country OR City, you destroy it, you destroy the soul of the city OR country thereby creating a swathe of slums as far as the eyes can see. Evidence of this loop-sided development abounds in our polity. Some of our Cities when u drive into them u have a de-javu feeling something dire and nasty has happened here, in most cases and the reality of it,  is the soul of the city has beung gutted out by the NON-Exitant of the middle Class.

There once bouyant neigbourhoods have being turned into graveyard of unpainted duplexes, that are grey and dirty , not any different from the old poor quarters they once look down on, the wholsome effect of these sudden transformation of the economic power of the middle class is the creation of a huge expanse of unadultrated heaven of mixed squalor and misery, superstion and desperation. (Edo girls going abroad to solicit for sex)

What Oshimule has done is put gloss on that misery, his actions are a million times better than those of his predecessor who will be shocked beyond believe next time he cruises  his chauffer driven sedan on the streets of Benin, for once the sights will remind him of those he marvel over in the white man's country, it is then it would dawn on him that such replication is possible, there and then he will albeit silently to himself will come to terms with his own failure at even patching the old narrow roads of Benin city, this guilt he will take to his grave, and I am doubly glad that the ill gotten wealth he yanked off from the poor will not go down to the grave with him.

I say Kudo's again to Oshimule, u chose to take a different route from your predecessor when u could easily have follow suit.

Since we have not done anything spectacular in 16 years, If FIFA likes they can slam us for another 10 years, at least that will be less than the 16 years of toture being part of the FIFA Family.

To be sincere it will spear a lot of Nigerians heartache for some years, maybe more Nigerians might even live longer during the period of the ban,  it will be a good therapy for our nation, we can focus on those dire infrastrutural facilities that we need,  instead of watching some old men playing a young man's game.

We need young forward thinking Yoruba men to grasp power in Oyo, Ogun, Oshun States, men in the mould of Fashola and papa Awo who will be able to draw a comprehensive development plan for the region. A development strategy that would encompass regional rail links between Lagos and every nook and cranny of the old Western States.

The way forward is for this 3 states vote AC, and I hope Jega will be bold enough to protect our votes. This divide and rule where some States vote PDP and some AC is not good for the Yoruba nation. It is destroying the soul of a progressive nation, rigging over the years has made inept and un-intelligible people seize power in the these States, thereby turning a once upon a time sacred office into an institution of delinquent bickering, the prestige that comes with the position of Governor has being eroded as these dimwits who are not any better than motor park urchins misuse and misappropriate public funds to the detriment of all.

Half the time the present Governor’s spend the State’s scarce resources like drunken sailors, at a whim, without thinking it over, should one blame them, Capital NO, what do one expect from men who believe serving the people is a guaranteed lottery ticket and an unending overdraft to do the most obscene and despicable thing they can think off, the thought never crosses their silly weak minds for a moment whether the state can afford their shenanigans.

( or how else does one view the Ogun Governor’s unilateral believe that a N100 Billion Bond is the mother of all bail-out required by the state, a sum that the bloody Billy goat in his convoluted mind believe will set the state up for phenomenal development, the man must have forgotten he has already spent 7/12 year in the Job without a clue of what is going on, now he want to saddle his poor state with a huge debt burden, I guess he wants to leave with a huge bang, by drawing down his highest “ Egunje” b4 the curtain closes.)

These inglorious touts should be routed out of Yoruba land in the next dispensation and genuine forward thinking people should take over from this lot. Forward thinking people in Yoruba land are everywhere,  I come across them on a daily basis, the earlier this set of goal getter’s realise next year's  election is open to everyone the better, except if Jega’s  promises to us all, in which he insisted  that next year's election will be the freest in the history of our nation is a fluke which should be discarded without an ounce of sincerity, a position which will be at odds with his earlier stance.

Unfortunately Ondo and Ekiti will have to wait beyond 2011 to choose their next Governor’s, Mimiko of Ondo State is an action man the type we want in Oyo, Oshun and Ogun State. Ondo and Edo State are set-up for great things to come, Edo has taking the stake further by being the first State to introduce a biometric card for her citizens and residents of the state, kudos to Oshimeule on this visionary move, a similar proposal is on Mimiko’s table awaiting approval I hope that will be approved ASAP.

they wouldnt even borther passing this law in the first place, simple freedom of information act, they cant pass
It would have to be a private bill with 100,000 Nigerian signatures on it. The second step would be supporting candidates in 2011 that would make this bill become law. We all know this house will not pass a bill that will come back and hang them,  neither would they want a pay cut from N40 million a quarter to N4 Million a year.

The best bet would be for new candidates to fill both the House of Reps and Senate in 2011 who are prepared to accept N4 million as a Salary and pass the firing squad law. The power lies with the electorate, if Jonathan has promise us all a free and fair election, I don’t see any reason why new candidates from all over the nation cannot run against the incumbents using these pointers as their election manifestoes

First and foremost there should be a general amnesty to all politicians and their cronies, the black-board SHOULD be wipe clean, everyone should be giving a second chance to start afresh and clean up their acts.

If we have hope of seeing the promise land this steps must be taking with immediate effect. I promise Nigeria would be a developed nation in less than 15 years if we can pass this resolution into law.

Firing Squad – If you Embezzle, steal, misappropriate N5 Million and above.

20 years imprisonment – If u steal between N3 and N4.99 Million- banned from politics for life

10 years imprisonment – If u steal between N2 and N3.99 Million- banned from politics for Life

5 years imprisonment – If u steal between N1 and N1.99 Million plus 2 years political ban

2.5 years imprisonment – If u steal between N100,000 and N999,999.00 Million plus 5 years political ban

Suspended from all political appointments for 3 years for any amount between N1000.00 and N99,999.00

Salaries of House of Reps and Senators: - N5million for Senators and N4million for Reps men this amount should include all expenses.(Although a luxurious Apartment called “ Assembly Apartments” shall be provided for all members at the expense of the state)

A full audit of all merchandise and stock in all Apartments would be taken before a member assumes tenancy and after term ends or failure to return occurs in the electoral process, this would reduce cases of abject blatant theft and outright brigandage to the barest minimum.

Governors shall be paid N4 Million a year including perks, Mr President would be on N7 million a year and VP on N6 million a year.

Britain has already made 25% cuts in its expenses I don’t see a reason why a developing nation like ours should be paying our House men more than the President of America, yet we cannot even produce a needle. This issue should be address now,  let some common sense prevail at least for once in our life.

For the law to take root the forecast would be as follows :-

5 Politicians to be shot by firing squad within 3 years of the law becoming operational, this would taper down to zero by year 5 and 6.

20 Politicians to fall within the 20 year imprisonment category within the 1st 3 years.

40 Politicians to fall within the 10 year imprisonment category within the 1st 3 years

80 Politicians to fall within the 5 year imprisonment category within the 1st 3 years

150 Politicians to fall within the 2.5 year imprisonment category within the 1st 3 years

300 Politicians to fall within the N1000 – N99,999.00 category within the 1st 3 years

By year 10 we should have a complete zero corruption especially corruption running into millions and billions of Naira.

El-dorado that fictional utopian would be a reality rather than a pipe dream. In our time we have shot, hanged some good men, Maman Vatsa, Dele Giwa, Ken-Saro Wiwa, why not sacrifice some of these gluttonic thieves for a better Nigeria.

The issue discuss here must be entrenched into our law, how, I don’t know how,  but it is something millions of Nigerians would want as part and parcel of our Identity.

The Chinese shot bent and crooked business men for corruption, today they are without a shadow of doubt the most liquid nation on Earth, with untouched funds going to about $300 billion.

China can pay of the UK’s debt in a year, this is the kind of nation we should be trailing and not the old Western Democracies.

Do you know what a REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME is?
If you don't, then leave this thread and go back to the zoo.

You are intellectually inept, redevelopment is a term use for the whole sheban, obviously that includes the cost of erecting the high rise, how can the goverment reclaim and build high rise for private individuals. Did u type b4 thinking OR think b4 typing, I suspect it is the former. I advise u go back to your Ojukwu topics where u excel admirably, but this stuff here is way above you.

My friend do you know the meaning of the term "redevelopment scheme"? If you don't, why are you here posting blindly?
Why are Nigerians incapable of normal reasoning? That is how we have quacks and politicians ruining our football. Anytime the NFA elections come around, all manner of quacks and thieves line up. That is how they killed our football.

Are you a professional in environmental design, planning or management?
If not, why are you here then? Why not go to other threads?

I am still waiting for actionable information on this project, hopefully from a professional.
What is your position Mr man are u saying $3 billion dollars is too little or too much for the 1st phase of the project which is purely re-claimation. Considering labour cost is next to nothing in Nigeria. What is your position?

Baro is a river port on the Niger River which is being dredge as we speak, this port can have a train link between Baro Port and any industrial Estates built in Bida, Minna, Suleija AND Abuja. I think the region has everything going for it, they just need a governor like Fashola at the helms of affair who would co-ordinate all these plans into one huge development plan.

he North suffers from desertification and flooding, much as the south suffers from erosion and flooding. Obviously you know little of the different environmental concerns in Nigeria.

The middle belt areas of Nigeria have the best weather, they don't have excessive rains like southern states nor the dersertification of the far north in fact they are bread basket of the nation.
