PoliticsRe: Nigeria Among Nine Most Illiterate Countries In The World by kodewrita(m): 2:32pm On Dec 09, 2010
This article is not specific enough.

Illiterate in what language.

Visit the south west, there are people who are illiterate as far as the english language is concerned but hand them a yourba KJV Bible and see them do wonders. Its biased towards english literacy. besides by virtue of population size, we'll have more illiterates than say Ghana.

Solve local problems like power shortage or water shortages.

Help cities like Port Harcourt by providing truly affordable transport.

Knock out nipost by creating a low-cost speedy alternative without using government subventions.

provide high tech security solutions to wealthy people.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria & Wikileaks - The Real Story Of Wikileaks Has Clearly Not Yet Been Told by kodewrita(m): 3:08pm On Dec 08, 2010
This is a form of intellectual arrogance. I guess King David went to Harvard university and Genghis Khan attended Sandhurst military academy.

These "illiterate" arabs grew up in the world's hotbed of terrorism. Some have family members who trained not only in Afghanistan but also in Bekaa valley (another core hotbed of terrorism). They have so much knowledge to draw on.

Besides using a plane to hit the US was a creative plan (forgive the fact that it killed people).

No country in the world is invincible otherwise the US would not be bribing Mexico to solve its drug problems. If they could stop the inflow of drugs so easily DEA would not exist.

Lets stop being partisan and see wikileaks for what it is: A revelation of how truly corrupt the world's governments and ruling authorities are.

As for assange, he's only mysterious to people who have never seriously considered becoming hackers. Back in my early IT days, I read a book called "Underground" which chronicled the different hackers from Australia who terrorized the IT world then. Australia because of its large distances both from the world and within itself has always had to rely on advanced communications networks hence the existence of guys like Assange and the famous 8LGM (Eight Legged Machine) hacking team (Brits actually who collaborated with guys like Assange).

The media is painting him many colors to satisfy their leftist or rightist tendencies. that he hates the US is not new, the only difference is that he has more power to do something about it now.

You should even be laughing at how nigerian the american/world reaction is. Instead of tackling issues raised, they are chasing him around on trumped up charges of rape and doing it so brazenly. We (the whole world) know that he's innocent, we know he's being framed but somehow everyone seems to go along.

That is the truly scary conspiracy of silence and collaboration with the establishment that is going on before our very eyes.

enough said.

Finally, we readers of Go Rin No Sho (The Book of five rings) meet. Nice to know other followers of musashi and sun tzu. I use musashi's techniques too when programming.

"Do nothing that is of no use"
— Miyamoto Musashi (The Book of Five Rings)

"Whatever the Way, the master of strategy does not appear fast….Of course, slowness is bad. Really skillful people never get out of time, and are always deliberate, and never appear busy."
— Miyamoto Musashi (Book of Five Rings)

and of course the favourite quote of all polymaths and wanna-be geniuses:

"It is difficult to realize the true Way just through sword-fencing. Know the smallest things and the biggest things, the shallowest things and the deepest things."
— Miyamoto Musashi (The Book of Five Rings: Miyamoto Musashi)

^^^ Never underestimate a guy who had the foresight to be in the right place at the right time with the right software. Just like myspace and the others were around when facebook came on the scene, faceoffestac was the biggest but faded away when NL came on scene and so many others. same goes for all those nigerian communities that came before him.

I believe he still possesses the ability to suprise.

await the upcoming restyling of nairaland. 2011 is going to be a really hot year for NL and several upcoming nigerian apps.

ComputersRe: A Nigerian Youth Has Built A Search Engine by kodewrita(m): 6:05pm On Dec 06, 2010
please search nairaland, there are at least 6 or 7 "Nigerian Googles" on the site.

Candid Advice: If you are not relying on google but actually using a REAL crawler, then focus on Nigerian sites and build up your index fast otherwise (if you are just echoing google) forget it.

Question: What exactly do we gain from this besides national pride? If its just basic search with no extras then Google is a better bet then. just my 2 cents worth.

I have had issues with spam originating from using nigerian social networks hence the precautions (still trying to verify whether the naijapals guy sells mailing lists or his site is phishing paradise. in progress).

Hi,

I have failed in this respect before.

I launched a web app with the belief that I would iterate the design and development rapidly based on user comments. However we never got out of the gate.

the app was plain-looking and decidedly unattractive ( according to my unbiased younger sister). suffice it to say that we had total 20 users with two of them being test users for testing the features of the site.

I would like to do things differently this time.

I have built from scratch a social platform that fits my specifications exactly.

the social network OS behind it (   grin ) would probably be termed as Facebook inspired (profiles, comment-liking, friend requests, ajaxy effects etc ) but rigidly in line with the site's targeted aim (will keep that for now).

As of now, the 1.0 version of the application is complete but I would rather release something that looks real good than risk the social whipping i recieved last time.

Better to be humble and make a good CSS/UI friend than risk failure.

I dont mind rebuilding again as we can simply consider 1.0 as a live mockup. but it is definitely production ready and all necessary design/development compromises/decisions have been made and concluded.

NB: An indian Jquery expert friend of mine just signed on to the project so I guess your javascript skills may not be so stressed up. Ownership of the application can be shared based on funds invested and of course some sweat equity. i have other innovative payment strategies that will not hog-tie you to something that might not succeed. And I have the funds to pay if you decide you want to do it as a contract.

Please list your skills and your portfolio will be of use too. If you have any web applications done (preferably failed ones) list them too, they will help me assess how useful your past experience will be to me .

To be concise, I need:

JQuery: someone to cleanup all the jquery code already on the site. knowledge of php(specifically codeigniter 1.7.2) will be useful. Ultimate task will be to unify all the code conveniently in the form of plugins and objects. Said person might also help refactor the Ajax gateway already coded. [Taken]

UI: Refactor the current design. Use of CSS frameworks is acceptable (restricted to Blueprint or fluid 960gs). Ability with photoshop will be a great advantage.

SEO: not yet but you can drop your contacts.

PHP: Codeigniter 1.7.2 coder [ability to implement PHP design patterns in Codeigniter syntax (Observer, Registry) is an added advantage].

If this thing gets off the ground, I assure you we will get to play with all the nice toys the big boys get to play with (fb and twitter) e.g EC2, Hadoop etc. funds available. all I need is great coders.

Please dont let me have to go it alone again.

Lets share the glory.  cool grin
PoliticsRe: Chad Basin Oil Exploration Critical To Economic Growth – Nnpc by kodewrita(m): 5:36pm On Nov 30, 2010
the delusion continues. get any competent nigerian geologist well versed in geological basin analysis to explain to you why a place with such a recent volcanic origin (like the Chad basin) will not have oil. sediments baked at thousands of degrees destroy any organic matter talkless producing oil.

be fooled at your own peril.

@dan1luv, i said touche because you proved his point. he put forward an intellectual argument and instead of reading it you asked him to summarize, essentially saying you dont want to read a long post. thats anti-intellectual in a way.

From what I can understand, his fictitious posts or the ones he deliberately creates (for the sole purpose of shocking or drawing in people) gather more people while the serious ones dont even draw any attention.
