Some things were not expected to be done anyhow

Did he tell you he will do things 'anyhow'. He intends to do it differently and cost effective. I cannot begin to tell you how much my builder wasted on my project to lintel level. To the point that his oga, the structural engineer told him that he does not need so much columns for a one-story duplex.
However, I still gave him the green light to construct it like that. It will only make my house stronger. I did not manage costs in the construction of the foundation and the pillars. He designed and built.

The 4in slab is optional. I can decide to go for besta boards or use 0.7 guage stucco Aluminium and do a 4in concrete slab over it.

A 20' 150mm H-Beam costs 13k. For a slab of 150m², I won't use more than 18 lengths. The purlins are in the range of 2.5/3k per m. By the time I sum up everything, I should be fine with 800k for the reinforcement minus the cost of woods and props and carpentary works cos they're no longer needed. Sorry woodworkers!

Trust me, it's cheaper in the long run. Im already planning to knock off the idea of running electrical pipes inside slab. I'm planning to go high on my ceilings and having cable trays installed for various services.

As far as safety of a building is concerned and as a matter of law, it is not your responsibility. The responsibility is to the structural engineer and the approving authority. It is your structural engineers professional stamp/ seal that must appear on you drawing plans. He is responsible for your safety.

It is left unto you to convince him and its left onto him to convince the approving officer both who assume responsibility for your safety.

The only way you take responsibilty for your safety is if you as the client donot engage the services of the structural engineer as the project supervisor and he relinquishes that role usually written on his documents. You as the client and the Builder/contractor take that responsibility.

Structural engineering is not scary business but scientific with proofs. If you cant proof it, you cant do it.

What a ridiculous postulate within the Nigerian context. I will never rely on a Nigerian structural engineer civil servant to guarantee my safety in my own house. A house that i intend to live in with my children.
I have seen some of those so-called structural engineers at Alausa. With 10k people like you will get anything approved just to rip off your clients.
I will surely employ my own structural engineer and will NEVER use a structural engineer brought by the builder/contractor. He is an accomplice if you know what I mean.

Thanks, a 4inch layer of concrete is more than enough for a one story duplex. It would get approval anywhere in the world except in Nigeria with very corrupt govt approval agents.

I am always with he school of taught that looking for cheaper alternatives that works is the best way to go. But my issue with @koning is not his desire for alternatives, but his inability to come to terms with the fact that no matter what means you wish to use in archiving your your structure, there are codes and processes that must be followed. Because something is done like this somewhere doesn't mean it will work somewhere else. There have to be steps taken from the foundation to ensure that it works. The one that baffled me is the fact that he sees a possibility of using 4inches thick slab for the deck. And ontop of his deck he will then use block works to partition his rooms and put a roof. Who knows he might them just put a parapet ontop.

If he feels 1.5m will do his slab. I wish him well. Lets see which slab collapses at the end. Wether u wan use labourers for free take work for ur house, we shall see. Let me not also jump into ideas sha. It's possible he has bought wood and other materials already sha.

With a very well calculated spatial arrangement of the steel construction, mixed with some concrete and loads of good quality cement, a 4inch slab would hold a sky scrapper. I never said the usual materials will not be used, but the quantity required should be drastically less for a one-story residential duplex. Besides using anything bigger than a six inch block for the upper floor partitions is sheer madness. I would use a 4 inch thick block if I could find such. Or maybe red bricks.

I'm a little bit disappointed with this your response. You of all people should know that I'm talking about your regular wine glass cup. Glass has the capacity to be made thicker and stronger than cement. No matter what the specs are, it's still glass though. That's my point.

But if you're convinced that you don't need to load all that steel on top of the columns, Why not come down to Nigeria, design your decking by yourself, Employ iron benders and do the job yourself.. so that if anything happens, you will be held responsible

That is exactly what I intend to do. It's a house I intend to live in. Let me worry about the safety. Loading 2 tons of steel on a decking is a very scary thought to me.

Thank you. Some of these so called builders just do not think. Do they ever stop to think why it's called a 'Decking' or 'Upper floor slab'. That's exactly what it is: A FLOOR FOR THE UPPER ROOMS. It just needs to be strong enough so that you don't fall through it. I have seen deckings made of Glass. You can even see it in some Night clubs and people dance on it.

Go back to my earlier comments. The upper floor decking adds nothing, nada, zilch, to the reinforcement. It will just rest on the beams which will be carried by the columns. A solid foundation and pillars/columns is all you need.

iron 12mm and 16mm will cost you aprox.=400,000
Wood=300,000
Granite= 350,000
Piping eletrical=60,000(No water piping in the decking)
Sharp sand= 125,000.

Above is just an insight. I did my decking in port Harcourt in October for a 4BR deplex, 3rooms up with Study room and small palour with abt 1.8m. And this is due to the fact that granite in PHC is very expensive. All thank to my Ogas here from Hajji, Spyder, brabus(evenly though im confuse abt him i still hail his contribution), Segcymoor and to all my ogas here on Properties section.

Well, I'm still awake after watching the match. So I can reply you. Please do not focus on the N1.5m, but focus on my fears of overloading the house. I personally consider the usual ways you guys deck houses to be a lot more dangerous. Have you ever wondered why so many buildings collapse in Nigeria. The TB Joshua church that collapsed was purely due to excess and unnecessary load on fragile columns.
My suggestion is actually the right way. I just need a good structural engineer that can carry out the plan for me.
Of course if I use 70% of the current materials you guys use in the usual, but very dangerous way you are used to, it should cost me less. Hence the quotation of N1.5m or thereabout.

Are you guys even aware that most American houses are built with wood, including the upper floor decks. I'm throwing this as a challenge to the Nigerian builders here. Seek out ways to build efficient, strong and light houses. All a house requires to be strong is a solid foundation and enough pillars to hold everything up. The rest of the building can be made as light as possible. That's why we are able to build high rise office blocks.

There is absolutely no need to load all that steel on top of the columns. It's just a platform to stand on. Or are you building the house for Elephants ?

You will have to work out the exact quantity required for a light, but strong upper deck before quoting prices.

The poster didn't say anything about type of decking. Whether it is RCC, Steel floor or Wooding Decking.

Don't know the full meaning of RCC, but I mean a normal concrete decking with some iron rods, concrete and cement. Besides it must not be 6 inches thick. 4 inches could serve. There is also a voided part in the sitting room area.

3.2 million naira ! Any builder that charges that much is either a thief or he is simply incompetent. Nigerian builders are fond of overloading a building. The building in question is fortified with extra columns. All I need is a surface that will serve as upper floor. The British used to build 3 story houses with wooden upper floors. There is absolutely no need to load an upper floor decking with steel rods.

It could be done with that amount. I just seek a builder with the same vision as me. You guys should learn to think outside the box. Avoid building collapse through unnecessary overloading.
