A presidential aspirant, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that the former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and other aspirants cannot outspend him during the upcoming All Progressives Congress presidential primary election. He said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, adding that Tinubu isn’t a hindrance to his becoming next president. Asked if he sees the former governor as a threat, Kalu answered, “No! and I am not a threat to his ambition. By the time we meet in Eagles Square, this issue will be settled. “Mind you, politics is not only about money; it is about the people you are going to govern -the people of the North-West, the people of North-East, the people of North-Central, the people of the South-East, the people of the South-West, and the people of South-South, and we have the people. I can move the people and the people are with me.” On why he decided to run fr president after an initial denial, Kalu said the situation of the country made him make a U-turn. Apart from boasting that he has support from all regions in the country, Kalu also said as a “recognised billionaire”, there’s nothing others can spend that he can’t spend. He said, “It was circumstance from the South-East, South-West, North-West, North-Central, and North-East that made me decide to join the race. I was governor with him (Tinubu), there is nothing difficult in challenging anybody. “We are all going to meet at the Eagle Square, and we will square it out there. There is no difficulty. I am the only political businessman that is first recognised as a billionaire, and I am not sure that there is anything those people can do, in terms of money, that I cannot do. I don’t think they can speak to anybody in Nigeria or in the world that I cannot speak to.”

Leke Baiyewu The National Assembly has reviewed the amount a sponsor can donate to a party and how much a political party can spend on a candidate’s electioneering in the Electoral Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill presently before it. This is just as the National Assembly is ‘cleaning up’ the electoral bill before transmitting it to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for the second time, it was reliably learnt on Saturday. In the bill that is scheduled for transmission to the President for assent anytime from now, the Independent National Electoral Commission is empowered to set ceilings for donations and expenses by donors, sponsors, candidates and political parties for electioneering under Section 90 titled, ‘Power to Limit Contribution to a Political Party’. The new Section 90 of the Act reads, “(1) The commission shall have power to place limitations on the amount of money or other assets, which an individual can contribute to a political party or candidate, and demand such information on the amount donated and source of the funds. “(2) Any individual, candidate or political party, who exceeds the limit placed by the commission in subsection (1), commits an offence and is liable on conviction to (a) in case of a political party, a fine not more than N10, 000,000.00 and forfeiture of the amount donated; and (b) in case of an individual, a fine of five times the amount donated in excess of the limit placed by the commission.” The current Section 91 of the Electoral Act, 2010, titled, ‘Limitation on Election Expenses’, prescribes that the maximum election expenses to be incurred by a candidate in a presidential election shall be N1bn; governorship election, N200m; Senate and House of Representatives membership election seats, N40m and N20m, respectively; state House of Assembly membership election, N10m; chairmanship election for a local government area or area council, N10m; and councillorship election in an LGA or area council, N1m. However, the National Assembly has raised the figures by about 500 per cent, especially for the presidential election. Clause 91 of the new electoral bill reads, “(1) Election expenses shall not exceed the sum stipulated in subsections (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) and (7). “(2) The maximum election expenses to be incurred by a candidate at a presidential election shall not exceed N5, 000,000,000.00. “(3) The maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate in respect of the governorship election shall not exceed N1, 000,000,000.00. “(4) The maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate in respect of senatorial and House of Representatives seats shall not exceed N100, 000,000.00 and N70, 000,000.00 respectively.” “(5) In the case of the state Assembly election, the maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate shall not exceed N30, 000,000.00. “(6) In the case of a chairmanship election to an area council, the maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate shall not exceed N30, 000,000.00. “(7) In the case of councillorship election to an area council, the maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate shall not exceed N5, 000,000.00.” The National Assembly also raised the fines and jail terms prescribed for individuals, groups or organisations, who flout the proposed law. Lawmakers raise individual donation from N1m to N50m In the current Act, Section 91 prescribes, “(9) No individual or other entity shall donate more than N1, 000,000.00 to any candidate. “(10) A candidate who knowingly acts in contravention of this section commits an offence and on conviction shall be liable in the case of (a) presidential election to a maximum fine of N1,000,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of 12 months or both; (b) a governorship election to a fine of N800,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of nine months or both; (c) senatorial election to a fine of N600,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of six months or both; (d) House of Representatives election to a fine of N500,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of five months or both; “(e) A state House of Assembly election to a fine of N300, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term of three months or both; (f) in the case of chairmanship, to a fine of N300, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term of three months or both; and (g) councillorship election, to a fine of N100, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term of one month or both.” Section 11 prescribes a maximum fine of N500, 000 or imprisonment for a term of nine months or both for any individual who knowingly acts in contravention of Subsection 9, upon conviction. Section 12 further prescribes, “An accountant who falsifies, or conspires or aids a candidate to forge or falsify a document relating to his expenditure at an election or receipt or donation for the election or in any way aids and abets the breach of the provision of this section of this Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction for imprisonment for a term of 10 years.” However, the electoral bill raised individual donations from N1m to N50m in Clause 91 (9). The amended Section 91 reads, “(9) No individual or other entity shall donate to a candidate more than N50, 000,000.00.” On contravention of the proposed law, the section further reads, “(10) A candidate, who knowingly acts in contravention of this section, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of one per cent of the amount permitted as the limit of campaign expenditure under this bill, or imprisonment for a term not more than 12 months, or both. (11) Any individual who knowingly acts in contravention of subsection (9) is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of N500, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term of nine months or both. “(12) An accountant who falsifies, or conspires or aids a candidate to forge or falsify a document relating to his expenditure at an election or receipt or donation for the election or in any way aids and abets the contravention of the provisions of this section commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N3, 000,000.00 or imprisonment for a term of three years or both.” Meanwhile, the National Assembly was still proofreading the bill as of Friday. A senior official of the National Assembly told our correspondent that after the political arm of the parliament – the Senate and the House of Representatives – amended the bill, the bureaucratic arm was proofreading the legislation before it would be transmitted to the President. The source disclosed that the National Assembly was being careful about the bill to prevent another rejection by Buhari. According to the official, the parliament is especially working on the issues raised by some civil society organisations recently. A coalition of 12 civil society organisations on December 30, 2021, said its review of the electoral bill had led to the discovery of cross-referencing errors in five sections and grammatical errors in two sections. Also discovered were duplicate provisions in three sections and conflicting provisions in one section of the bill. They, therefore, called on the National Assembly to carry out a comprehensive review of the bill to ensure that all editorial, drafting and cross-referencing gaps were addressed since the President had declined his assent to it earlier. The CSOs comprised Yiaga Africa, International Press Centre, Centre for Citizens with Disability, The Albino Foundation, CLEEN Foundation and the Institute for Media and Society. Others are the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism, Partners for Electoral Reform, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre and the Nigerian Network of Non-Governmental Organisations. Speaking to our correspondent, the official said, “That bill deserves a thorough clean-up, so we are taking time to do just that after which it will be transmitted. We are trying to prevent any error that may warrant the President declining assent to the bill. We are taking our time to cross the ‘T’s and dot the ‘I’s. The National Assembly had last Tuesday amended the bill for the second time by concurring on consensus candidacy and setting fresh conditions for political parties in the nomination of candidates for elections. The President had vetoed the electoral bill and sent it back to the National Assembly over the restriction of political parties to direct primary, insisting on the direct and indirect as well as the consensus options. The House had amended Clause 87 of the Electoral Act, 2010, which is Clause 84 of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, by inserting the indirect primary option. The Senate, however, not only added indirect primary, but also consensus adoption of candidates for elections by a political party. By passing different amendments to the bill, the Senate and the House will have to refer the versions to a conference committee to harmonise the differences and report back for final passage and transmission to the President for assent. However, both the Senate and the House of Representatives took a shorter route by rescinding their decisions on the amendments last week and re-amending the electoral bill. This time, the House concurred with the Senate on the consensus, while both chambers passed the same conditions set for the option. Copyright PUNCH.

Mostafa Mohamed of Egypt has been arrested after asking a friend and neighbour to stand in for him for an exam. A teammate of Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed is studying for an Information Technology qualification at the Higher Institute for Management and Information Technology in Giza. Egypt is through to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Cameroon, where they will face Morocco on Sunday. Mohamed has played in every game at the tournament so far for the Pharoahs, too – most recently completing 90 minutes against the Ivory Coast before he substituted ahead of extra-time. Since the striker is otherwise busy at AFCON, he asked a mate who lives down the same street as him to take the computing exam for him, which police are now investigating. Local outlet Youm7 says that Mohamed has had three previous exams completed by a replacement – despite the stand-in in question having apparently claimed this is a one-time arrangement. He is my friend and his future is going to be destroyed if he doesn’t take the exam,” Mohamed’s neighbour said. “I just wanted to help; this is the first time I do it.” Mohamed, 24, currently plays for Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig, having begun his career at the Egyptian side, Zamalek.

On Thursday, January, 2022, there was a security breach in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State. Fighters suspected to be from the Islamic State for West African Province, ISWAP, attacked Pemi Ward, which is about a few kilometres outside of Chibok town. There are about six political wards across Chibok with the same name ‘Pemi’ as called by the locals. The insurgents looted food items and belongings of the people. It was learnt that Thursday’s attack was the 97th time Chibok and its surrounding villages would be attacked by the insurgents since the abduction of the 276 girls from their dormitory on April 14, 2014. Residents of Chibok area of Borno State in northeast Nigeria had fled their locality for fear of further attacks. These people had continued to ask, “why Chibok?” Currently in Chibok, only the older generation are said to be at home and taking care of the upcoming generation. The teens and young adults have relocated to cities across the country like Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt to seek a new beginning. DAILY POST spoke with Dr. Allen Manasseh, one of the sons of Chibok land, who had been in the forefront calling on the international community and government to deliver his people from the frequent attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP elements that lay siege to his beloved town.

By Ochogwu Sunday Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that he would never return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying he has retired from partisan politics. The ex-president, who renounced his membership of the party in 2015, stated this when he received the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu; and other stakeholders who paid him a visit on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. According to sources, the visit was targeted at returning the former president to the opposition party ahead of the 2023 general elections. But, Obasanjo, while addressing the stakeholders, said he had vowed to remain as a statesman. He, however, said PDP would always be part of his life. He said, “I’m no longer in partisan politics and there is nothing that can bring back. Anybody who wants my advice, I will always be there in the best interest of Nigeria. "Whatever I do in my own life…because I became president on the platform of PDP, PDP will continue to be part of my life. "Since the day I tore my PDP card, that was the day I ceased to be a member of PDP. That day I vowed not to be a member of any political party. I will continue to be a statesman.”

The Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, maintaining peace in Plateau and parts of Kaduna and Bauchi states, has trained 103 youths on armed combat and intelligence gathering. The training is part of efforts of the military aimed at tackling insecurity in southern parts of Kaduna state. The graduation ceremony of the trainees took place at the OPSH Sector 7 Command in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area, Kaduna State. Speaking at the graduation of the trainees on Saturday, Commander of the sector, Col. Timothy Opurum, said the formation and training of the civilians was informed by the displacement of some communities by bandits in 2021. He said, “What brought about this training is the displacement of people living in Jankasa and Kachechere villages under Ungwan Gaya District. “When I took over, I discovered that there were no people living in those areas because of an incident that happened in that place last year. “Based on that, I drew these youths from among all the indigenes that had been displaced from that place and gave them basic training. “This is to enable the people to retake their lands, especially as we are approaching a new farming season,” he added. Opurum noted that the issue of security is a collective responsibility, hence the necessity for the locals to be involved in the fight against crime. “Security is everybody’s business and no one individual organisation can have monopoly in ensuring security. “It is on that basis we felt that there is the need to carry the community along in creating a secure environment for socio-economic development. “We may not completely eliminate crime, but if we work together we will be able to reduce crime to the barest minimum,” he stated. According to him, the civilian joint task force comprises youths selected from different ethnic groups and religion. Members of the civilian joint task force will work together under the control and supervision of the command.

By Gowon Akpodonor Thanks Nigerians For Their Supports Coach Augustine Eguavoen has assured Nigerians that the Super Eagles will throw everything into tomorrow’s Round of 16 matches against Tunisia as if it is a final game. Nigeria topped Group D with the maximum nine points, while Tunisia came in as one of the best losers, after finishing last in Group F with just three points. Speaking with The Guardian yesterday at the team’s hotel in Garoua, Eguavoen said that they will approach tomorrow’s game at Stade Roumde Adjia with ‘everything’, knowing fully well that there is no room to make amend. This is the knockout stage, and you have to deploy every tactic to win. If you fail, you go home. We are not ready to go home now, so we have to win,” Eguavoen stated. Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles to the semifinal at Egypt 2006 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, hinted that the players are fully aware of the ticklish nature of all North African teams. “We are ready for the task against Tunisia, from the players to the technical crew. We are all aware that an opportunity like this hardly comes. When you have it, you take it. That is our gospel in this tournament.” He revealed that his dream is to lift the AFCON trophy once again, haven did so as a player at Tunisia ’94. Eguavoen hinted that their training yesterday and today would determine whether or not to use the same team that played the group matches against the Pharaohs of Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau, or bring in new players. On if the players, coaches and other officials had been paid, Eguavoen said: “Things have changed, and mode of payment has equally changed. Now, we have to submit our bank details, and your money goes into your account unlike before when you get your money by hand. The Federal Government wants things done properly and accountably too. I must praise the players for their discipline, and I also commend President Muhammadu Buhari for his morale and financial support for the team. I also thank the Sports Minister and the NFF for believing in us. I also thank my old teammates, Austin Okocha, Victor Ikpeba, Kanu Nwankwo, Sunday Oliseh, Emmanuel Amueke, Samson Siasia and others for their words of encouragement.

It has not been the best of times for the residents and business owners around Okporo, Ihioma, Umutanze, Orsu Ihitteukwa, Mgbidi -Awo, Nnenasa, Okwudor among others in Orlu senatorial zone of Imo State since the security unrest in the area rose to an alarming level. Some residents of the areas, who spoke to DAILY POST, said people hurriedly rush home before 6pm to avoid being caught in what has become a regular occurrence of shooting in the zone between unknown gunmen and security operatives. They said since the guns began to boom in the state, the once bubbling council areas have become ghost towns as persistent attacks and kidnappings have forced many residents to relocate to safer places. Mr Chidozie Okereke, a shop owner at Banana junction, Orlu, Imo State, while speaking on the ugly development said the fear of unknown gunmen in Orlu is the beginning of wisdom. He said the current security situation has affected businesses, schools, nightlife and transportation in Orlu zone and the entire state. He explained that the situation is bad to the extent that people sleep with their eyes open so as not to be caught unawares by unknown gunmen. ”I have not opened my shop on any Monday or disobeyed the IPOB sit-at-home order for fear of uncertainty in the air,” he said. Okereke said there have been reported and unreported cases of abductions in several communities and ransoms were paid before the victims regained freedom, so I can not risk my life for Monday sales. A senior staff of the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, IMSUTH Orlu who pleaded anonymity told DAILY POST that most staff of the institution and several others located in Orlu do not go to work on Mondays. ” There is palpable fear everywhere and people are scared of losing their lives. People now find it difficult to even hold public events because they won’t get the needed attendance and this development is affecting the local economy. When people no longer feel safe coming home for fear of kidnap. Our people now think that security operatives who should protect them are not even secured. Visit the Njaba police station beside a once functional commercial bank along Orlu road, you’ll agree with me that it’s in a sorry state.” He said the indiscriminate arrest and killings of innocent people by the security agents is also a contributing factor why the people still obey the seat at home order even though IPOB has called it off. Some business premises are visited often by security men looking for people the owners don’t know, while parents now warn their children to stay at home. The situation, according to him, is worrying and affecting businesses and the educational sector. Also Mrs Chika Amaka who also runs a popular joint at Iheoma road told DAILY POST that things have really changed. ”Business is no longer booming. Most young men and women who come to my joint mostly in the evening hours to wine and dine no longer do so for fear of the unknown. She said “ I open in the morning and close before 6pm. Sales have dropped and people no longer come to the joints in droves like before. Everyone is scared of stray bullets which have killed many people. So we only pray the situation improves so that business can pick up. Before the security breaches, I used to sell more than 25 cartons of beer and other drinks in a week, but since the security situation went of control, you hardly see anyone here beyond 7pm. Business is really bad. Sales have dropped drastically. Another resident, Mr Nnamdi Ogwazuo said the situation is almost the same in other parts of the state. When asked to give reasons why people in the zone still adhere to the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) despite its suspension, he attributed it to fear. He warned that if the situation does not change, the economy of the Imo State will be affected. He said only recently passengers in a commercial bus heading to Lagos from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital were kidnapped when unknown gunmen intercepted the bus in Isiala Mbano, Imo State. Ogwazuo said just last week, a former speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Lawman Duruji, a businessman and many others were also kidnapped in the state. He said, ” Apart from the businessman, popularly known as Ezzybee, others abducted are the wife of an ex-chairman of Okigwe Local Government Area, Frank Onwunere and an identified person at Okwelle junction in the Onuimo Local Government Area of the state. However, the Imo State government has continued to promise that it would improve the worrisome security situation in the state. The Commissioner of Police CP, Rabiu Hussaini has also appealed to Imolites for support and collaboration by giving security agencies, especially the Police, credible and timely information.

From Ighomuaye Lucky, Benin The chairman, Wheelbarrow Pusher Association, Edo State chapter, Otunba Adebayo, yesterday, called on the state government to investigate the issue of alleged extortion by individuals in the name of ticketing at the Oba Market, saying that they are not slaves. He made call during a protest march against extortion and multiple taxations of members of the association in Benin City. Adebayo said the recognized ticket by the association was N50 but suddenly, various levies started to emanate from nowhere, culminating to the sum of N1000 in a day. “When they started, they were collecting N50. From N50 it is now N700. We are not slave. That is the reason for the protest. “The money they are collecting from us is too much. government does not ask them to collect N700 from anybody. government did not also tell them to fight anybody, injured people in the market. “The embarrassment is too much. If you go to hospital now, you will see a lot of the wheelbarrow pushers lying in hospitals. Some of us have given up the trade. “How much are we working? Some will rent wheelbarrow for N300 and work at most N3000 while some will not work as much as that. That is how we have been sustaining ourselves in the business. Those that work between N700 and N1000 a day, if you remove N300 how much will now be left for the person? Nothing”, he said. He added that “My people don’t want to steal, kidnap, yahoo (Internet fraud) but the only yahoo they know how to do is the wheelbarrows they are pushing for a living. “The problem is that there are too much people collecting ticket from us (ticketing). Among the ticket people are those without ticket. They go about with marker. In the marker group, they are about six in groups”. He said the protest will from today last to next week if government does not answer them or do something positive about it. For Abdualli Samata, from Kano State, they pay N200 for community chair, marker, N200, painting, N200, all this money, according to him is too much for them to pay. Also, Paul Okoh, called on Edo State government to come to their rescue noting that since the banning of bikes by the past administration in the state, they decided to take to pushing of wheelbarrows as a means of survival. THE United States and the British Government have turned down a request by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to send representatives to observe the his trial holding at the Federal High Court, Abuja Division on January 18, 19, and 20. While the US said it was limiting its employees from attending public gatherings, the UK explained that it does not normally attend a court case involving a British national. The US Embassy and the British High Commission said these in separate responses to inquiries from The PUNCH on Friday. Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, had last Wednesday, written to the US and UK missions in Nigeria, stating that the presence of their representatives would ensure a fair hearing for his client. The IPOB leader is facing a seven-count amended charge preferred against him by the Federal Government. The letter titled, ‘Request for delegate(s)/representative(s) to observe court proceedings …In Re: Charge NO. FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, Federal Republic of Nigeria V. Nnamdi Kanu’, read in part, “May we, gratefully, please, request you to send representative(s) to observe the proceedings of the court on those adjourned dates and on any other date to which further proceedings in the case may be adjourned until the matter is disposed of. “The need to ensure that our client is given a fair trial has compelled us to make this request. The instant request is compelling in the circumstance, to ensure that the whole process of our client’s trial is fair and just in all circumstances. It must be remembered that his purported indictment on criminal charges has a political undercurrent.” Ejiofor argued that the FG has a profound interest in the criminal charge pending against his client and the outcome of his trial. But the US Mission, which disclosed that it is following the trial closely, declared that its officials would not attend the court. It stated, “The US Mission Nigeria is following the trial of Nnamdi Kanu closely. The US Department of State is limiting employees from attending public gatherings.” In its response, the British High Commission acknowledged Kanu’s status as a Briton, but stated, “The FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) would not normally attend a court case involving a British national, but where we do consider it appropriate to attend, our consular staff would do so in an observational capacity only.” When asked to clarify if the commission would send observers to the trial which begins on Tuesday (today), the British High Commission’s spokesman, Dean Hurlock, said, “We can only offer you this as our response.”

2023: Ohanaeze Sets Aside N10bn Support Fund For Igbo Presidency, Seeks North’s Support Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said it has set aside N10bn in support fund for the actualisation of Igbo presidency in 2023. This is just as the Igbo socio-cultural organisation started its negotiations with other regional leaders and stakeholders. Leading a delegation, Secretary General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, met with the National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, in Kaduna on Monday. In a apparent move to solicit support for an Igbo president, Isiguzoro said that Igbos believe in dialogue and negotiation to produce the President from the South-Eastern extraction. He noted that Igbos in diaspora have set aside a N10 billion fund to support any candidate of Igbo extraction in the 2023 presidential race. Isiguzoro remarked that the Igbo delegation had met with some religious clerics in the north over the presidential project. The Ohanaeze scribe pointed out that politicians like Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, amongst others are presidential materials. We are begging the north to give us the opportunity. You should help us because we know that the North plays the role of kingmaker in politics of this country. “We are here to ask you to support an Igbo man for the presidency. There should be no more abusive words between North and South-East as we used to read on pages of newspapers. “What happened to the cordial relationship between Zik and Tafa Balewa? What happened to the good relationship between North and South-East? We must bring back the good memories of old days for the unity and development of Nigeria “Igbos have one trillion investment in the North. We are for one Nigeria, we are not for Biafra. We need somebody that is of age that can unite Nigeria. We believe in one Nigeria. We have abundant human resources that can take over from Buhari. “We have people who are committed to serve Nigeria. We have seven states including Rivers and Delta States where we have Igbo speaking brothers. We have politicians like Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Rochas Okorocha, among others that can run for the presidency,” Isiguzoro said. While responding, Shetima told the Ohanaeze delegation that it was good to negotiate when seeking for power, adding that nobody achieves a good thing through threats. “I have always believed in pan-Nigeria. I believe in the unity of one Nigeria. I have been part of many struggles. I am not happy that Nigeria is where it is. “People who don’t have an idea of history of Nigeria resorted to abusive words and threat. They resort to champion the cause of Biafra. Gone are those days you use threat to look for power. “It is a welcome development that you are here to discuss the 2023 general election. Politics is about negotiation. You need to rise above board. Nobody will trust power to you if you resort to threat. https://tribuneonlineng.com/2023-ohanaeze-sets-aside-n10bn-support-fund-for-igbo-presidency-seeks-norths-support/

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 election, Peter Obi, has urged a supporter not to sue him over alleged refusal to declare for the 2023 presidency. He said this in a response to a tweet by one @FakeBuhari, threatening to sue the former Anambra governor if he fails to declare for the presidency in 2023. @FakeBuhari tweeted, “Sir, if at the end of this month and you don’t declare interest for the presidency in the 2023 election, then be ready for legal action from me. Leave #AFCON2021 for Orji UZOR Kalu, that’s his calling, not yours. Your calling is excellent economic leadership. Congrats #TeamNigeria.” The fan had made the comment while responding to Obi’s congratulatory tweet to Super Eagles for defeating Sudan 3 -1 on Saturday in the ongoing African Cup of Nations. But Obi pleaded with the fan to give him time to consult, saying that he had no money for a court case. Obi, in a response to the tweet, said, “I wish I knew your real name. But the truth is, I don’t have money to spend on a court case. Give me some time.” The politician had in October 2021 denied having hands in his campaign posters being circulated both offline and online, and on different social media platforms. A statement made available by his Media Office and signed by Mr Valentine Obienyem, said that the office had been lately inundated with clarifications on Obi’s Presidential posters being circulated through various media platforms. According to the statement, Obi was not in any way connected to or authorised anybody or organisation to promote such on his behalf. It further noted that Obi was not the one to jump the gun on a matter the party was yet to give final directives. The statement said, “As a faithful party man, Obi will abide by the final position of the party on the issue. We frown on people’s preoccupation with the next election when the situation in the country urgently calls for all hands to be on deck towards the restoration of security, eradication of poverty, creation of jobs and provision of other productive ventures for the country’s teeming unemployed youths, improving education and making health care accessible in the country. “These are precisely what Obi is concerned with right now.”

By Daniel Kanu Prof Monday Igwe is the medical director, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu. In this exclusive encounter with Sunday Sun, Igwe who also lectures at the Department of Psychological Medicine, Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, speaks on the disturbing stimulant, Mkpurummiri, the danger, the challenge, and what needs to be done to checkmate it. The erudite scholar also gave President Mohammadu Buhari kudos for the efforts of his government in the health sector, particularly since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Excerpt: Let’s have a brief explanation of what Mkpurummiri is all about and why the issue is prevalent in the Southeast? Mkpurummiri is the local name of amphetamine-like psychostimulants such as amphetamine (also called speed) and methamphetamine (also called Ice). The problem of substance abuse is now recognized as an emerging epidemic and is seen across all communities and cultures with some variations. The commonly abused drug within a community is related to several factors such as availability and cost. From available research evidence in Nigeria, alcohol and cannabis are still the most commonly abused licit and illicit drugs, respectively. However, it appears that the wave of social media is popularizing “mkpurummiri”. Notwithstanding, it is still a huge public mental health issue. I assume it’s everywhere but just more awareness in Southeast. What are the implications of its use on the health of the user? The health implications may be classified as immediate or short-term and long-term effects. It is known that following the inhaling or ingestion of the substance, it may produce a number of effects such as euphoria, increase attentiveness and concentration, feelings of high energy and wakefulness, and quicker reaction time. However, after some period of use, the individual may develop paranoia (i.e., being suspicious and distrustful), hallucinations (i.e., a perception in the absence of a stimulus), cravings for the substance, compulsive drug-seeking behaviour, and convulsions. In overdose, severe mental disorders such as psychosis may emerge; dangerously high blood pressure, chest pain, stroke, heart attack etc, may occur. Apart from the medical implications, there are social consequences of dependency on psychoactive substances. Does Mkpurummiri have medical value? Clinicians use methamphetamine for medical purposes. For example, psychiatrists commonly prescribe it for the treatment of such conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy and sometimes for weight loss. How can its abuse be checkmated? Prevention of substance use disorders requires a multi-sectorial approach with interventions across lifespan. Addiction is a brain disease and preservation of the brain early in life is a necessary step. Quality obstetric and neonatal care is the bedrock of health neural development. Strengthening family values and resources, good neighborhood with community cohesion, the church, and other institutions of socialization are very important in the prevention of addictive behaviour. Law enforcement must be balanced with a public health approach to substance use problems to achieve the desired results. Emphasis on drug supply reduction without addressing drug demands through evidence-based treatment approaches may be counter-productive. What type of help does a drug abuser need? It is good to understand that drug use disorder is a spectrum ranging from use to abuse/harmful use to dependency syndrome. As earlier stated, persons having drug-related problems require humane medical attention at various levels. Various levels of care ranging from counseling to motivational interviewing and to in-patient care depending on the degree of use and other medical and mental health co-occurring conditions. The current community approach of using punitive measures, is that the correct thing to do? Well, as stated earlier, a multi-sectorial approach is needed to address indices of social disadvantage such as poverty and unemployment. Punitive measures are oftentimes based on the moral theory of addiction which emphasize that people having problems with psychoactive substances brought it upon themselves and so should not be pitied or even treated. Those who hold this view tend to use punishment as a deterrent. However, it is known that substance use disorder is a disease with recognizable signs and symptoms that has evidence-based treatments that are cost-effective. Treatment of persons with drug use problems has several advantages. One example is that a treated drug user is less likely to recruit another person and this reduces criminality associated with the use of drugs. The use of punitive measures is successful only when it is targeted at the drug producers and dealers, but not users as the current approach to the drug war focuses only on supply reduction which drives increase on demand. To achieve the much-needed supply and demand reduction, punitive measures should be targeted only at the drug producers and distributors and this should be coupled with the treatment of users. What is the state of healthcare in the country presently? The current government in Nigeria under the leadership of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari has done marvelously well in the health sector. With the advent of COVID-19 disease two years ago, the Federal Government has done so much to improve the infrastructure in the health sector. In essence COVID-19 is a blessing in disguise. The government has provided and equipped isolation centres, Intensive Care Units, molecular laboratories in all Federal Government tertiary hospitals across the country. Also, personal protective equipment was supplied. Unfortunately, there has been a massive migration of health professionals to other countries for better remuneration, bringing a shortage of manpower in some critical areas. I plead with the relevant agencies to quicken the process of replacement for these staff that have left the system.

Former Kogi West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has cautioned Nigerians against allowing other politicians with poor leadership quality like President Muhammadu Buhari to become the next president of the country. Recall that since the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tiubu declared his intention to run for the presidential position in 2023, other top politicians including the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi had followed suit. Dino, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, said “Nigerians can not replace Buhari with Buhari Pro max”. He also rubbished the presidential ambition of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, describing it as Papa Ajasco’s TV series. The post reads, “Yahaya Bello’s dream of becoming President is a continuation of Papa Ajasco’s TV series. Meanwhile Nigerians can not replace Buhari with Buhari Pro max. SDM”.
