Greetings to elders in house, am sort of new in nairaland and need u guys help. Am a HND holder finish my NYSC June 2012 and applied for US student Visa for fall 2013 but was denied. During d course of interview d VO asked for my SAT and TOEFL result but cud not provide it, reason being that d school I applied for waived it for me bcuz I had GPA above 2.5 so I did not kia to write it. After d whole stuff I was given a leaflet and after reading it all I cud hold was that I don't have a strong tie.

So now, have sat for d toefl and scored 71 and want to apply again. The question now is can I change one or two things frm what I used initially, then also can I claim am working? Having it in mind that initially I claim I was not working reason being that I want to focus my education serious. Pls kindly help am seriously confused
Thanks
Got some questions for you bro, are you going for Bsc or Msc, change some things like what n what. Adding work experience is very important but if you are adding work experience make sure you have your appointment letter, I'd card, pay slip n if possible study leave letter with you. Kindly answer the questions.

xandy84: @bigfrancis21, @ kunlebal, @ imperiouxx, and the rest that i cant mention that took time out to help my cgpa problem..

How do i go about having my CGPA convert to the scale of 4.0 by WES...? thanks
I don't really get your question, do u want to convert it yourselves or you want World Education Service to do it for you. If your answer is yes to the second question, Kindly register with WES on www.wes.org
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by kunlebal(m): 8:01pm On Oct 14, 2013
bigfrancis21: Yea. Sure I'm getting set for classes. Can't wait to show 'em indians Naija pepper. grin

I see this CGPA conversion thing is really confusing. Each 5 point-scale GPA has its own equivalent on the 4-point scale. As the 5-point GPA reduces so does the 4-point GPA. And no, the credit units are not reduced or increased during conversion. The only things changed are the grades and grade units.

For eg, FOR WES translation,
our A is their A = 4 points.
Our B is their B+ = 3.5 points.
Our C is B = 3.0 points.
Our D is C+ = 2.5 points.
Our E is their C = 2.0 points and
Our F is F = 0.

For WES' conversion list, there are no Ds and Es on their US 4-point scale. All our Ds and Es are converted to C+ and C respectively thus adding extra points to the person's equivalent new CGPA. That's why WES is considered the best.

Now, the higher the CGPA, the lower the add in extra points to the final because the 5-point GPA is likely to have more As, Bs and Cs than Ds and Es(the very two which add extra points to the overall). And the lower the CGPA the more the add in possible points from Ds and Es because the person's transcripts is likely to have more Ds and Es than the first example, thus adding a little more points to the person's 4-point CGPA since the many Ds and Es will be converted to higher C+ and C.

I'll give you a quick break down of Naija GPAs I've seen converted by WES to the 4-Point scale so you can quickly place for yourself where 3.08/5.0 will land.

Nigeria. US
4.10/5.0. 3.53/4.0
4.08/5.0. 3.52/4.0
3.73/5.0. 3.37/4.0
3.68/5.0. 3.29/4.0(Your own conversion. wink
3.20/5.0. 3.06/4.0(Kunle's conversion)
3.12/5.0. 3.05/4.0
2.99/5.0. 2.99/4.0
2.33/5.0. 2.50/4.0

Look above and see the linear relationship. Notice the falling pattern of the 5-point scale and its equivalent falling pattern on the 4-point scale. Its a linear relationship. Now look at the scale and estimate the range 3.08/5.0 on 4-point scale will fall on? Your guess is as good as mine.

@Kunle: remember when you sent in your transcripts to WES for evaluation and you were waiting for it to come out, I told you on bbm that your new CGPA will between 3.05 to 3.10? And when it came out and it was 3.06? You told me when it came out and remember I told you I wasn't surprised that knew it would fall within that range. This was because before then my friend who had 3.12/5.0 had converted his own and got 3.05/4.0. And because your own 5-point scale CGPA, 3.20/5.0 was higher than his 3.12/5.0, I definitely knew your 4-point equivalent will be higher than the 3.05/4.0 which my friend got.

Likewise, 3.08/5.0 will be lower than 3.05/4.0 but won't fall below 3.0/4.0 since 2.99/5.0 fell on 2.99/4.0. The range will be between (3.0 to 3.05)/4.0.

Observe that its a linear ratio thing. I guess the confusion comes from the fact that the CGPA 3.08/5.0 is second class lower and its 4-point equivalent, 3.0/4.0 is considered second class upper on the 4-point scale. That's how it is. Kunle's 3.20/5.0 is second class lower but also turned out to be 3.06 which is higher than 3.0/4.0 and which is second class upper on the 4-point scale.

3.08/5.0 isn't much different from 3.20/5.0 and should give something close to Kunle's 4-point 3.06/4.0 in accordance to the law of linearity and mathematics. Hence, I don't expect such a huge downward plunge in the new CGPA equivalent, such as 2.5/4.0 to 2.60/4.0 as Kunle projected.
Got your point bro, I remember the cgpa stuff on bbm.

babyosisi: Nigerian accounting degree holders with a CPA license do well here (certified public accountant)
In know a few
I think that is similar to ICAN in Nigeria
I know two with their own businesses, getting jobs from govt agencies etc and doing extremely well.
CPAs also get hired by firms and virtually every establishment needs an account executive
Hospitals
Engineering firms
Government jobs
Big law firms
Etc
It is a good field no doubt
With further education here and the examinations to become a CPA you should do well
Thanks sis, i will work on that immediately i touch down in the state. really appreciate your response.

bigfrancis21: Don't forget that if he had more Cs than Bs as you said, he would definitely have gotten a much lower GPA than what he has. I guess his number of Bs and Cs are fairly almost the same with your own.

3.08 CGPA WILL never go below 3.0/4.0 on the 4-point scale. 3.08(or approximately 3.10) isn't much different from 3.20, likewise the 4-point CGPA won't be much lower than yours. Definitely not below 3.0/4.0.

Let him go ahead and convert it, let's see.
Till then bro.

imperiouxx: Hey there, hope you're getting set for classes?

So do you mean if someone has upper division on 5 point scale, the conversion takes significant effects than does for someone with lower division? Well, all his 4 and 6 unit hours when converted to 2 credit hours will have effects on the total CGPA. The new grade ranking always has effects 5.0 scale. I have some As, many Bs, few Cs, 1 D and 1 E but the conversion was fairly ok in many case.

I'd like him to give us feedback after his conversion but I'm affirmative that he is going down below 3.0
ME TOO
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by kunlebal(m): 9:53am On Oct 14, 2013
bigfrancis21: Your estimate is a bit too low. The 2.60 - 2.80 range you mentioned there is for 5-point CGPAs of between 2.50/5.0 to 2.60/5.0. Another friend of mine who graduated with 2.33/5.0 converted his CGPA and got 2.50/4.0. So a 5-point scale CGPA of 2.50/5.0 to 2.65/5.0 will fall around that your 2.60/4.0 - 2.80/4.0 range.

I have a friend who's in Texas currently who converted his CGPA using WES. He graduated with 2.99/5.0 and when converted by WES he got the same 2.99/4.0. He really wished his CGPA would reach up to 3.0 over 4.0. So 3.08/5.0 which is higher than 2.99/5.0 when converted to the 4-point scale WON'T go below 3.0/4.0. wink

When converted to the 4-point scale, there isn't much difference between your 3.20 and 3.08. The current difference of which is 0.12 when converted to the 4-point scale will further be compressed to say, 0.05. The guy's new CGPA will not be far much lower than yours(3.05/4.0). 3.0 is a fairly accurate guess. smiley
That can only be possible if he as more C's that can be converted into B's, cos during my own case i have lot of B's which they can only convert to B+. i wish him the best.

xandy84: bros no vex.. What is 3.08 in naija GP going to be in scale of 4.0? Thanks
Your GP will be from this range 2.60-2.80/4pts. Cos when I evaluate mine from 3.20/5pts I end up at 3.06/4pts(WES)

babyosisi: I missed the question
MBA is a field that that every tom deeeek and Harry is getting from any and any university
If you want to excel with your MBA try to get into a big name school
I am talking the Harvard business school,Wharton in Pennsylvania,Stanford in Cali ,Sloan at MIT
Those folks get recruited by A list jobs from all over the world while still in school
There is a young man that is now a top shot in Nigeria
We grew up in the same neighborhood
I knew when he was at Harvard business school, gained admission from Nigeria
Many months to graduation he had offers in London and Ny and was deciding which one to take
If you want your MBA to make meaning, get into the top schools
There is a huge difference in the school you went to for an MBA
Thanks for your advice, if I can't go to top schools in the state what do you think I can do to make it in the USA. I only have bsc in accounting from nigeria and considering coming to the state towards dec/jan, kindly advice me asap.

Just go to any Gtbank and make payment for student-academic visa fee, but I got one question of you why bsc again when you have better chances of getting your visa through msc.
You need to explain to the VO what you have been doing all this while(fill the Gap)

firstly work on the bold part is not allow here, secondly your cgpa is not bad bro. you need to do more research cos some school in the state accept cgpa of 2.5/4pts or 2.7/4pts. when you are sure of the school you want to apply to ask them if they want you to evaluate your transcript or not, cos not every school will ask you to evaluate your transcript.

Pally why bsc again when you have bsc already, it will be very difficult to convince the VO that you remain undergraduate for the past 9 good years. The gap is just too much but all the same nothing is impossible.

Ricky Rozay: That's NOT a good idea bro... Let him go to a good Studio and take the appropriate Passport Photograph Size...

Don't you know they look at many things in a Passport Photogrtaph.. US Passport Photograph has Requirements and if you DON'T meet that Requirement, you can get Bounced.

It is NOT something you can just take inside your Cupboard.. Excellence really matters.. Do things Orderly and in a very Good Manner in other to send a good Signal and Impression to the VO..

@Kunlebal go to a Good photo studio, Like the one i gave you today @ Ikeja and take your Passport Photograpgh there..

Be careful bro so you DON'T get Bounced @ the US Embassy due to Wrong Passport photograph you submitted @ the Embassy..

1k won't Kill you.. Choose Wisely bro... We are talking about the US Embassy which will determine the Next Level you advance in your Life and NOT a job interview at a Palm wine Joint....
