Thanks for all the contributions on this topic, It has been very rewarding and expository. I have enough information now to help me make up my mind on the way forward. And for the cynics who thinks its all hoax, you can make cool money here in Nigeria (legitimately) if you know your onions.

Friends. I am desperately in need of some advice here. I am doing very fine here in Nigeria, my Telecomms business generates me over N15m profit annually, but I am faced with pressure from my wife who thinks relocating to UK or US will not be a bad idea.

I have been to US before briefly but it never crossed my mind to stay back and live there. What are your advices, will I still be able to maintain my business tempo and have a better life abroad or should I just stay back and develop my business further.

Lets be hopeful, lets stop being cynics. Lets just say its one of our regular problems of handling projects. I believe the registration will eventually go round. Lets all be patient, whats the point in rushing to have another voter's register imposed on us. We need to get it right otherwise, going back to the regular registration options will take us 5 decades backwards.

Hi Gridlock, The cost of your CPE will be determined by the wattage of radio and the antenna gain you intend to use.

Your best bet is to have enough gain at your base station so that you can have less power requirement at the CPE end. Use sectorial antenna and a powerful radio in the range of 1 to 2 watts, you can achieve this using amplifiers.

With the above, a 65mwatts and 14dBi antenna will go as far as 3km while a 200mwatts of the same configuration. Note also that some modern antennas comes with pouches which houses your radio and allows you to make it outdoor. That saves you the cost of IF cables.

If you care, I can provide you with 65mwatts CPE radios(ethenret radios with POE support) of the above configuration for only N40,000.00 and 200mwatts with 14dBi for N50,000.00

Increasing price will not necessarily drive out the poor consumers. You will be shocked to know that 90% of the power produced by PHCN goes to 10% of their customers, these 10% customers are the big industries and government. In fact, majority of PHCN debtors are government institutions. Increasing price will not in anyway deter this big users because it will still be more economical for them compared to running their generators. It will only make life more miserable for the poor users. Remember also that price is not arbitrary, it is a function of the cost of production.

In my opinion, NEPA's major problem is their inefficent billing system. It leads to wastages and leakages. They allow themselves to be owed huge debt and do nothing about it. They should focus more on an e-billing system (they have started on this anyway). If I have a prepaid NEPA meter, It allows me to control my consumption, obviously, an AC user will pay much more than a FAN user. We all have learnt lessons from the GSMs, now people are a better able to control their calls because they pay in advance. Even with NEPA's present tarriff, if they are able to collect all their bills monthly in advance, they will have enough to expand their power genaration. businesses will thrive and we will all have light at our homes.

I thought I was over critical of the quality of Elendu's reportings until I read the views of other people.

I cant substantiate this fact, but i believe Elendu is making money from the sensationalism and "arm-bushing" king of journalism. If you read his story about the Sokoto State government before and after his visit to the state (God knows what transpired during the visit, i hear journalists too collects brown envelopes) you will wonder where his objectivity lies.

He also seem to be partisan in his views of the nigerian politics. I suspect he might be on some politicians's pay roll going by his write ups

Genverters (Generator + Inverter In 1 Piece) Solution To Power Problems In Nigeria

Genverters: By coupling an existing generator to a battery charger, battery bank and inverter, efficiencies are increased and costs are decreased.

The most common power source for homes off the utility line is a gas or diesel generator. As long as this generator is run close to its rated capacity, efficiencies are maximized and costs are kept relatively low. However, this is usually not the practice. Many generators without battery banks are run 16 hours a day or more at only a small fraction of their potential power. The result is that the cost per kilowatt hour of electricity goes sky high.

Now consider the addition of a battery bank, a battery charger which operates whenever the generator is run, and an inverter which powers the AC loads from the battery bank whenever the generator is off. MTN is a fraud to say the least and they are very arrogant like we already acknowledged, i think this South Africans are just out here to cheat us.

I was shocked to read in trhe dailies that they already did a turn over of N116Billion in 6 months for this financial year, gosh !!!, Nigerians pays one of the highest rates for calls internationally and gets the least quality for it, and they will be fast to tell you its because of NEPA, NCC to me seems a lame  duck and the House of Rep are already compromised, they get their regualar monthly graft that comes as phone credit from MTN ( i don't know if it has stopped now).

I think we should revolt somehow to stop this fraud from continuing. To me, they are a major contributor to the poverty Index in Nigeria because nigerians now spends most of their disposable income on calls that hardly go through. N116Billion Naira in Six Months is just too much
