Gbawe:

Take your own advice first because you need it far more than I do with how you think I care for anything other than debating views I have. When I stepped up things a notch , with real points, and then ask you to dispute what I write , if you can, you start rambling , like a market woman, about "getting groove back", "tiredness" et al . You should concentrate on real argument or get lost. Am I the one who makes it a point to respond to your posting with contrarian argument that is actually empty when put to the test of logic?

Do you know what the NGF is? Do you know what it is set up to achieve?

Why don't you point us to the section of the Nigerian constitution that recognises the functions and powers of the NGF as a starting point ? If you cannot then you and others should accept that in normal times , with a stable and non-threatened Presidency in place, the NGF is automatically forced to live within the parameters of its existence as , more or less, a lobby group for the articulation of specialist interests. many such group exist and they , and others , cannot go around claiming to have influence they simply do not have by virtue of how their is no legal powers ascribed to their group. The NGF , for the avoidance of doubt, is effectively a lobby group.

You ridiculously continue to point to fashola's praise of the NGF as some endorsement of your argument as to why Fashola may desire to lead it. You simply misunderstand Fashola because he is only praising the notion that Governors can come together to gain a common voice to lobby the Government with on issues that matter like state policing, revenue allocation formula, linkage federal roads etc. Unlike you , Fashola understands what the NGF can achieve for Nigeria in terms of the push for development . He is not looking at things from a political angle. Fashola know that the principles behind the NGF is good but the reality is very different with how it is those who fervently want to preserve the status quo (PDP Governors) who will carry the day by being in the majority. This , at least in part, is precisely why he would not be interested in leading the NGF . Giving the NGF any other role or power than that it is historically limited to , when the polity is not troubled, is conjecture.

Thank you !!! I really don't see why many are blinded to this fact as one reason for Fashola not to show an interest in being chairman even if many back him for the position. Fashola is also smart enough to know that he will be damaged (as Saraki now is) if the NGF does something he will have to accept responsibility for.

We all saw how easily , like a fly , Saraki was brushed aside in his limp attempt at becoming PDP candidate because many blamed him for how the NGF scheming , selfishly and unpatriotically, held Nigeria to ransom during the Yar Adua health saga. Saraki will probably never head anything in future. I doubt the PDP would ever let him near a position of real influence like , for example, the senate Presidency let alone the Presidency.

Can anyone good come from an opposition Governor leading a majority PDP forum with all the implication of backstabbing and deceitful majority gang-up Fashola would face? Some must imagine that Fashola will just talk and all Governors will comply. Fashola may have an agenda of development but same cannot be said of many other Governors.

Brother mi, my take on this is that the GF is a good place to spread influence and reach out to others . I am only analysing this isssue in the context of Fashola having an ambition to be president in 2015. Saraki could not make it based on wrong timing , power of incumbency and his joinging the northern consesus rubbish. Saraki still commands influence among his fellow governors rogue ones and the good ones alike. Saraki did not lose the PDP primaries but chose to support GEJ when the consesus told him he was not a core northerner but still managed 2 votes among the 9 wise men while IBB had 3 and Atiku had 4.

Fashola as the GF chairman has nothing to lose but more to gain. Fashola as it stands cannot be the president of Nigeria under ACN as it stands. If Fashola does not have any ambition then , he might stand to lose more than gain anything from the GF. We can only speculate and neither opinion is wrong or right because we are only speculating.

The governors hold the ace in elections and we saw how they all rigged for GEJ in the SS SE and NE. If Fashola contests an election today to be president he will lose in a big way and that is a fact. Our people are not politically mature enough to vote for quality candidates but they will vote on regional lines, vote based on instructions of their leaders and all other useless reasons. It is only in the SW things are bit better .

Buhari failed because he had very limited incursions in the south and Fashola needs to move into the north and SE to spread his influence. The GF is a good way to start , it is only a means to an end and not the ultimate means if you know what i mean.

dejavus:

if you ask me, all the current Political Office Holders should be shot, end of!

I got it from a recently elected ACN Rep Candidate that the order from Tinubu is that out of the £120,000 quarterly Allowance of the Reps, 50% of the Figure goes into ACN's Pocket indirectly Tinubu's Pocket!

I have no doubt in my mind at all abou this. The point is the ACN reps and sorts spent limited amount of their resources campaigning. In fact in many parts of the SW majority of the people did not know the ACN legislative candidates but just voted the party.

The reps never had any serious structure on ground but all rode on ACNs structure , the guys have to pay something back to the party which is a cut of their salary. I am not sure if this is just Lagos or the entire SW but what i am sure is in LAgos , Tinubu single handedly picked the reps and whatever he asks them to do they will do as they owe him their allegiance and not the people.
Politics / Re: Group Warns Jonathan Against U.s. Military Base In Nigeria by Lagosboy: 3:48pm On May 24, 2011
Citing a US base in Nigeria is like opening your house for snakes to move in.

We stand to gain nothing from the move and the US stands to gain loads from the move. GEJ should understand the complexities of Nigeria and we do not need any outside meddling in our affairs at this point in time. The US perefers a disintegrated Nigeria so they can concentrate on the ND where the oil lies and the rest of Nigeria can go to hell for all they care.
Politics / Re: Amaechi New Head Of Governors Forum. Fashola Not Interested. by Lagosboy: 9:43am On May 24, 2011
I personally think Fashola would have been interested in the position but did not fight publicly for it as he feared the PDP dominated forum would not vote him in and vote one of their own. The old rule says never fight a battle if you are not sure of winning.

Ameachi for me is a wonderful governor and i will rate him at par with Fashola and Chime which means we have a good GFN leader with a focus on development.

If Fashola really has the political mettle to be the president of Nigeria then becoming the leader of the GF is a good start. If fashola cannot lead the moronic governors in the forum then how will he lead the thousands of moronic cabals existing in Nigeria. LAgos is not Nigeria and i presonally think Fashola should have tried to lead the GF.

Fashola leading the GF would have spread his influence outside the SW, it would have freed him in some ways politically from his godfather, it will be a nice way to begin 2015 struggle because i see no way Fashola can be president in 2105 under ACN , it will just be a wild goose chase and end up another Ribadu IMO.

Fashola needs to reach out , spread his tentacles , spread his influence. Bukola Saraki IMO was the smartest GF leader to date because he knew how used the GF to spread his influence. BS is a smart guy and did well for Kwara but he represents the old order of pro staus quo politicians.

Having said all these, i wish Rotimi well in his new role and the best PDP governor emerged chairman kudos to them they voted based on merit.
Politics / Re: Bankole For Ministerial Appointment ! by Lagosboy: 3:44pm On May 23, 2011
If my memory is correct OBJ spent billions on the 4 refineries under the then TAM scheme (Turn around maintenance) of all the refineries. Guys like Sir Emeka Offor made a killing in terms of money as nothing tangible was done to the refineries.

GEJ ordering NNPC means GEJ voting money again for the refineries to work which means some guys will "jeun soke and jeun si apo" again. Same old story same old song again.

I voted GEJ, I did not vote PDP grin
Politics / Re: Bankole For Ministerial Appointment ! by Lagosboy: 2:36pm On May 23, 2011
Gbawe:

Thanks my brother. I will read it and respond.

As per the topic of the thread , assuming Bankole and other recycled crooks become Ministers, all I can say is "we told you so" . I remember that many of us , including yourself, stated tirelessly that GEJ is "more of the same" . We argued that the most ruinous hands in Nigeria are not behind GEJ for nothing. Jonathan , of all the Presidential candidates, is the least likely to deliver the type of bold, dont-care-whose-ox-is-gored, rigorous and sincere reforms that will set Nigeria on the path of rapid development .

Already we are seeing hints of the deciet and lack of political will many of us accused GEJ of repeatedly . We are told he has directed the NNPC to ensure Refineries are working optimally within 2 years. Moribund NNPC? Madness IMO . This is GEJ simply pandering to his "owners of Nigeria" friends who want an inefficient status quo to remain in place !!! Whatever happened to what is very obviously needed? I.e the transparent concessioning of the refinery into competent Private hands that will always be pro-performance because of the incentive of profit?

As for the power sector , I can only advice Nigerians not to dream of selling their generator. I raised the alarm about how odd it was , a few months back, that the FEC were approving a raft of Power contract when all spendings on the sector had previously been halted till a holistic privatisation plan was in place !!!! That , to me , was clue to how the "privatisation" talk is really deception and insincerity.

We are quickly receiving signals that we may be in for another 4 years of profligacy, inefficiency, sheer indolence and callous corruption. Already Mr. President , knowing how fundamental the issue of recurrent versus capital spending is, has stated that a leaner Government not possible for now when he did not have the sincerity to make the same argument before the election !!!!

My brother, Nigerians have chosen "fresh air" for the next 4 years. Lets hope many won't choke on "fresh air" .

The sad and scary thing is seeing FO around GEJ all the time, i am not aware of any president in the modern world that allows himself to be photgraphed without any caution with a top businessman in the country. We know western presidents cut deals with CEOs and other guys but to be seen in public everyday with a priovate citizen that has substantial interest is just calling the bluff of Nigerians.

We are being told we are stupid and we cannot do anything about it. FO has interest in diesel hence electricity will never significantly improve in the next 4 years. FO imports diesel hence the refineries will not still function after 4 years except he buys the refineries himself.

I grieve for Nigeria.

We are also being told 5 billion naira is budgeted for a mere inaugration party at a time where a country like spain cut 10% of govt ministers pay, 5% of public servants pay and other costs. Our president is using 20 million pounds to party , i wonder how much he has stolen if he can use that amount to party.

Bandit C.:

Sorry but i have to say that your write up is the biggest pile of c.rap i have ever read. Is it really so difficult to get it in your head that Nigeria is a secular state and that in no circumstance should anything religious define the runnings of the government affairs. Religion does not belong in government!!! get it? Nigeria is not Britain, so desist from comparing UK to Nigeria. Since muslims in the UK are measly 3 million in population, they pose absolutely no threat to the UK since they can easily be crushed should they attempt any islamic revolution, so allowing them to operate small scale islamic banking would mean little and also gives them the impression that they are welcomed in the UK.

Nigeria on the other hand has a large islamic population and any penetration of their islamism into the affairs of goverment would be viewed with sceptism and fear of islamic domination would set in since other religion are not getting the same treatment. Thus therefore Nigeria remains a strictly secular state and your silly islamic banking nonsense has no place in anything fedetral especially CBN. If you want to enact such laws, go to your islamic states and do that and not with laws that affect all Nigerians.

We also know how radical nigerian muslims are and the extent of what they can do is not in doubt and therefore they should be strictly monitored.

Objectivity is a virtue in intellectual discourse, if you dont have the tenacity to read, digest and analyse opposing opinion then you should not bother coming to NL. If my post is crap you should simple walk over it and you need not respond.

For you to say the boldened simply means i cannot engage you in any meaningful debate as it would be a sheer waste of my precious time. Have a good day buddie  wink
Politics / Re: Row Over CBN Clause In Banking Rule - Sanusi Requiring "Sharia-Compliance"!!! by Lagosboy: 11:00am On May 23, 2011
We Nigerians are the worst religious bigots and hatersin the world.

Islamic Banking is based on islamic principles which is not just inteterest free but other islamic financial transaction which can only be explianed and regulated by islamic finance experts. About 3 to 4 universities in the UK offer masters in ISLAMIC FINANCE and it is a wide field.

The fact that there is no such thing as christian finance or Bhuddist finance in academic discourse should not be a reason to hate islam for such. In the UK, we have islamic bank of Britain who have a SHARIAH COMPLIANCE ADVISORY COUNCIL comprising of islamic scholars well versed in financial issues. HSBC, LLoyds TSB both have Shariah Advisory COuncils. The is a Semi Christian or secular state and we have no fuss about it.

This propagamda is just being peddled by the Ibrus, Atuches of this world who are bent on destroying Sanusi who is respected in the whole world and celeberated worldwide for his good work.

The earlier we shed our bigotry and islamophobia the better for us as a nation.

Back in 2007 , 2 gentlemen were disqualified by Iwu to contest for an election on this basis and they went to court and one the case. One of the guys was from Canada and the judge ruled clearly that the rule is subject to Section 28 and applies only to anyone who is not Nigerian by birth of whose parents are not Nigerians.

Ajimobi will win this case as there is precedence for it. Many politicans have dual citizenship and this is a non issue and a wild goose chase by Akala , except he has bribed the judges already.

A ranking member, now a senator-elect from the South-South geo-political zone in the country, who made the disclosure in an interaction with Peoples Daily at the on-going NASS retreat in Markurdi, also disclosed that he was worried that some of the new members-elect are not prepared for legislative business but have begun to ask him which of the House committees is the ‘juiciest’.

He said, “I was so embarrassed when today, some members-elect asked me which of the committees in the House was juicy and how much they are to expect as their quarterly allowances after inauguration.”

One of them also asked me which committee has oversight function on the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA). It seems these new members are out to scoop as much money as possible from the system, with little or no regard for their primary assignments,” he added.

According to him, the retreat for the lawmakers-elect must be properly focused so that their perception of the House would be redirected. He called for a full re-orientation for the members so that they would not see the parliament as a place for money-sharing.

And so the story continues.

Politics / 100 Million Naira For Ministerial Appointment by Lagosboy: 1:16pm On May 16, 2011
A group of people who claim to have access to the presidency has been going round choice spots in Abuja saying they could make anyone minister for N100 million.

Already, the group has made contact with a number of people who have been told to submit their credentials with assigned individuals, who act as middle-men.

A woman who runs a highbrow eatery in the city, speaking on condition of anonymity, said she has been contracted to reach out to people with that kind of money, who at least have secondary school certificates and are not less than forty years old.

She said the whole matter is ‘hush-hush,' so she only approaches clients she could trust.

The middle-aged woman also said any client she introduced to the group would have to sit with her and sign a written agreement spelling out what he or she would do for her once the person becomes a minister.

A source who has been contacted by this woman said he was told that the N100 million must be given to the group up-front.

"She said as proof of their connections, I would be taken to Aso Rock where I would meet some of the president's men and satisfy myself that the whole thing is legitimate," he said

The man, who hails from Kano State, said "what makes her credible for me is that she won't take any money for arranging the appointment until everything works out. Besides, the fact is that I know the kind of circles she moves in."

A senior aide to the president was recently peeved when told by a retired Naval officer eager for ministerial appointment, that he was told to bring N500,000 before he could be introduced (to the aide.)

Our correspondent, who was with him at the villa during the discussion, said the aide told the officer to call back after the president returns from his Ugandan trip, but also requested for the name of the fellow who had asked for the bribe so that the person could be sanctioned.

"That is how it will spread that we now collect money to book appointments with the President," he said.

Thriving business

In Abuja, this kind of fraud, in which people with some access to political office holders collect money to link others up with their principal, is quite rampant.

It has become a thriving business for people who hang near the corridors of power, using their closeness to authorities to dispense favour for cash.

NEXT learnt that sometimes, even wives of these leaders are not averse to using the opportunity presented by their matrimony to make some money.

Attempts to speak to Ima Niboro, the president's spokesperson was unsuccessful. But another senior aide to the president, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Nigerians should be wary about who they hand money to while searching for public office.

"State chapters of the PDP and its national leaders have already compiled their lists to be sent to the president," he said. "People hanging about Abuja eateries paying for links to the president might just be setting themselves up to be duped."

ekt_bear:

I just wonder if it is worth sacrificing the speaker's position for a strategic point. I'd rather sacrifice it for something concrete and tangible. How do we know any of these other factions even value ideology anyway? If they don't, then we've given away something valuable for free.

I hope you see my point, right? This ACN ideology of merit will not work in a Nigerian setting. So if you use merit to screw your own zone out of something useful, you had damn sure be getting something back in return. Rather than giving away that useful thing for free.

IMO any zone can produce the speaker in as much as the speaker will perform creditably well. a SW speaker has no benefit to the SW except the title. Bankole and Etteh spent 4 yrs as speaker but there is nothing to show for it except looting of billions. In fact Bankoke has looted times 10 of what Etteh stole.

The earlier we do away with zoning nonsense the better. IMO zoning should only be limited to the president and his vice. Nothern president and southern VP or vice versa. This ideology of zoning is gradually creeping into every fabric of Nigerian politics. The other day someone here on NL said 2015 Lagos governorship should be zoned to Mushin , can we imagine where this zoning idology will take us to.

Fair enough. I hope hope that the ACN recognizes the value in having a house speaker from the SW, even if the guy/gal is PDP. Better us than the SE or North.

And how will we (I guess Nigerians as a whole) be able to identify who is most capable for the job? If it were use merit as the criterion?

Keep in mind that they have that rule that disallows freshman house reps, iirc. Which is an anti-merit policy.

The rule does not exist in the house as far as i know, it only exists in the senate through some back door manouvering by David Mark and his gangs
Politics / Re: Dont Zone The Position Of Speaker To The SW : ACN Caucus. by Lagosboy: 11:13am On May 16, 2011
Seeing the billions Bank-Ole squandered as the speaker , i can understand why people want to kill themselves to become speaker. This useless ideology of zoning is just an ingredient or catalyst for perpetual mediocrity in governance. The speaker is zoned to SW and we have to choose between Ajibola an OBJ stooge or Adeola , a lady even her fellow rep dont know well neither have we seen any major contribution from her on the floor of the house.

Why should speakership be decided outside the floor of the house. From my understanding ACN has 70 seats, CPC about 50 seats and ANPP 20 seats. If the oppostion come together and seek the support of some disgruntled PDP reps, a speaker could emerge from the opposition.

Why do we not think outside the box, at least even if the opposition does not win , there will be a good election and merit might prevail.

PDP was about 4/5 from bottom on the ballot paper and it was clear as daylight these people were thumbprinitng for PDP. Yinka Odumakin was very right when he said GEJ shot himself on the foot when he accussed CPC of amassing 6 million underage voters.

It is now clear how GEJ got at least 30% of the votes in all northern states, 40% is sokoto, 30% in Katsina, 30% in Bauchi and all other states.

Having said that, Ajimobi should tell his children to keep a low profile as that is one of the ways you dont get unneccessary distractions and negative media. Lam never recovered from the bad media focus on his children and was one of the reason IMO Dapo lost the election. Impoverished people have a complex and they dont like to see young kids flaunt wealth and immediately associate that wealth to stolen money.

ngcompass:

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) might raise interest rates again this year, if the government fails to rein in spending.

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, said yesterday at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London (Chatham House), that the apex bank was ready to tighten monetary policy to curb inflation, if a much-needed fiscal contraction doesn’t materialise.

“I believe that, in an environment where there are still lots of concerns about sovereign debt, the government will have to face up to the fact that the markets are jittery about debt,” Sanusi said

Sanusi said the apex bank “wishes to see the new government (Goodluck Jonathan administration) not only reduce overall spending but also cut its overhead costs, in favour of a greater proportion of capital spending”.

“It is not so much the size of the deficit but the very low levels of investment and capital. Lots of the money is being spent on salaries and overheads, and that is inflationary.”

Sanusi has been singing and screaming this statement for the last 5 months but the FG together with the over hyped Aganga and our legislooters keep ignoring the message.

GEJ has up to 100 Special advisers, another 100 Senior special advisers, then another 100 Special assistants topping it up with Senior special assistants. All these people have at least 5 different aides wich easily brings it to between 1500 and 2000 people benefiting from useless portfolios.

Dimeji Bankoles office of the speaker alone has 52 staff and below is my source if you want further info

How can we move foward when the speaker alone has about 4 photographers on the govt payroll. Each Legislator i believe employs another 4-8 staff under the payroll of the govt.

When GEJS new found buddie FO is seen with him everywhere he goes, intelligent people should know it is either FO is the one to build our power infrastructure or we would not have stable power supply in another 4 years.

FOs main business is simply diesel and with stable electricity, demand for diesel will almost reduce by 80% which means 80% reduction in Zenons oil and APs business. FO is Femi Otedola

This is a good start , the committee i believe would just be setting out the framework of which detailed policy could be drawn up when the administration is sworn in. Two weeks is definitely not for policy formulation. I am happy with this news and i wish and pray Amosun succeeds in his governance.
