Politics / Re: Gej To Make Lga Reforms Pre-requisite For Revenue Formula Change? by Lagosboy: 2:17pm On Aug 04, 2011
I have been singing on NL about how inefficient our LGA's are. The hypocricy of the governors singing and shouting true fedelaism knows no bounds as they all divert LGA money for spurious uses. I support everything in this bill except the tenure duration. I urge the NA to ammend the bill by expunging the tenure elongation and passing the bill including revenue allocation formular , empowerment of the LGAs and so on.

The independence of the LGAs would make the poltical positions more competitive which should hopeflly translate into better governance. The role of Local government commsiion in states is another thing that should be looked into as these bodies solely exists to get a percentage of LGA funds for personal use.

It is shameful that the LAgos of today or Nigeria of today is a shadow of what it was 40 - 50 years ago. The only inference i can draw is that the older generation failed us woefully and they handed no legacy down to our generation except corruption and mediocrity.

The scary thing is I have the feeling our generation will be worse as most of us are product of mediocre Nigerian education and victims of society at large. Examples are abound of young politicans looting more than their predecessors. Dimeji is a shining example of our lost generation. embarassed

@Lagosboy

I wonder where you have been.

Can't believe you wrote the above. It's unlike you to generalise as such.

Salam sis, i have been doing lots of travels recently across the atlancic and highlands of europe. However , these days i have been more active on the politcs thread as sometime ago i was not too happy with this section   sad

However, I dont think i generalised and if it sounded as such it was never intentional . I stand by my point though that some medicore lecturers have over the years created an image of an ideal husband which unfortunately places an emphasis on outward appearance for a male.

I have delivered talks in places where when i am called people look down on me because of my looks initially , but mellow down when the listen to the content of my speech. I was recently in Lagos and was at the palms in Lekki and i wanted to pray and saw a brother whom i asked if he knew where i could do salah. He was shocked and later on told me i should please try to dress in "sunnah clothing" because he could never imagine i was a muslim or practising muslim. ( i was wearing a bermuda jeans shorts and a t shirt".

The definition of "sunnah clothing" is not what i want to go into here but with all humility i dont think there is anything called sunnah clothing aside any cloth that covers the awrah of a man, which makes the word sunnah clothing insignificant to me.

I have had intercations with some sisters who say "i love the sunnah look", loving something is not a problem as it is a personal choice but looking down on others who dont have a look the mirrors the image you have been taught is what i frown upon.

Islam should never be reduced to dressing and the length of a sisters hijab is meaningless to me as regards her taqwa, faith, knowledge and spirirtuality. Some people might disagree with me , i respect their opinion but hold on to my opinion due to my experiences in life and with many muslims around the world and Nigeria especially Lagos inclusive. Hijab is mandatory for a woman and it is the barest minimum , there are a million things beyond the hijab but unfortunately some of us dont see beyond that.

I do agree with you that the way a guy carries himself also matters and if he is just around to play and fool around then many sisters will not give him the audience. In conlcusion, sisters should look beyond the appearance of a guy and not repulse him because of his looks and not wearing a beard. Those things would not take him to jannah and what will take him is his taqwa which is reflected in his actions and not his dressings.

And God knows best.

Politics / Re: WHY SHUD LAGOS NEED 13B TO TACKLE FLOOD AMIDST ITS REVENUE? by Lagosboy: 10:56am On Jul 19, 2011
This article is only an indictment of the ministry of Environment because they have a solution to the drainage problem. The question is why was the drainage system not improved despite all the warnings they had about impending flooding. It is easy for govt to blame the flood on bad habits of the people but the fact remains govt should have done more to prevent this calamity.

13 billion from Lagos coffers is certainly possible to prevent this disaster if the casualities are put into context and the loss of property and man hours. The other day , Fashola said people built on a canal in Gbagada but then again it is the failure of the regulators to have discovered the construction earlier on.

In the west council operatives go round inspecting the areas regularly, i remember getting a letter from the council about my garden tree overgrowing. This is what government should be doing, Fashola is doing well but could do a lot better in terms of governance and especially administering the inefficient Local governments who are the closest to the people. It is pretty cheap talk for state governments demanding true fiscal federalsim from the FG while they dont practice it within their states by cutting the local governments funds.

In addition, you claimed that you can not name the local governments you based your own thread on because you have a life outside NL, but you had a lot of time to type essays after essays using the same 10 LGs to re-assert your point, but you just just wont name the 10 LGs.

We both know you lied and the only reason you're scared to name the LGs is because you lied and you're trying not to get busted again. You are just like many of the generic ignorant Lagos and Fashola haters on NL and the fact that you inserted disclaimers here didn't hide your intentions, it obviously highlighted them.

Otherwise , i cannot see anywhere in my post where i have assesed Fasholas perfomance on roads in 10 LG. I am a lagosian to the bones and I have no other origin apart from Lagos. I knew Lagos roads in the 80´s and even in the 90´s. I remember when the roads were bad under Oyinlola and the slogan of Oyinlola and his commissioner then Funso Wiliiams was "no bitumen" . I knew the improvment under Marwa and I know roads that have not been touched in the last 12 years.

I named local govts for you , people here could testify to it and you are here asking me to name all the streets in the 10 local govts. Do you think i am a no good who has no life outside NL or the internet. I better let you off and go back to more important pressing issues.

I know you choose to read what you like and leave the rest. I stated about 8 LGS in my earlier post but you chose to ignore that. LGs names are different to street names in case you dont know.

I can take banters and attacks but to accuse me of lying is something i take very seriously.

@Eko ile , buddie i dont trade insults on NL and you could check my posts to confirm, i will not be dragged into an arguement with you either.

Ikeja LG
Many roads within GRA ikeja are filled with big massive pot holes, again this is an assertion i stand by

Gbagada, Alimosho,Mushin, inner areas of Maryland , Onigbongbo

I clearly acknowledged that some of the roads (Bode thomas, Eric moore etc) are currently under rehab but you chose to ignore that and spread your agenda. I again repeat that Surulere roads are an eyesore , the Adelabu you mentioned , could you do me a favor and post a picture of the streets in that area. The pictures I posted are inner streets from many local governments.

You made silly blanket statements without facts, you don't have any proof to back up your claims, even basing your assessment on 10 LGs to assess the governor was flawed and shallow. You said your thread was not created in any bad faith, but how do you justify that statement when you based the man's achievements on 10 LGs and the roads you never drove on, also when we all know that the man has constructed and rehabilitated more roads than many past governors? You just can not tell me you drove on all the roads in all ten local governments. I dare you to name the LGs. Go ahead and watch me punch your lies with proof.

Your assessments was flawed. How do you even pass blame on the man for what's essentially beyond his control? The man can only perform within his means and capabilities and if you think he should be doing more, I suggest you write the people of Lagos state a big check for Fashola to start building and fixing all the roads in Lagos state.

Everybody have something to say about roads, but they are so clueless about the state's financial burden and obligations.

Now, does it even make sense to say the same governor who was elected a little over 4 years ago let the streets in Lagos go bad and just decided to wake up and start fixing the same streets. You mean all the streets in Lagos were damaged within the 4 years he's been in office?

What about the tons of streets he's constructed within the same 4 years? You mean those doesn't count and just the ones you drove on was enough to judge and blame him for? constructed within the same 4 years?

Your thread remains ignorant, thoughtless and mindless,

2. It takes time to even get good muslim sisters, and if you're lucky to see one there's no way you'll get her to talk rather they snub or ignore you.

3. They out rightly judge you by the way you dress, must i stop wearing jeans and T shirt because i want to date an hijab sister?.

It is becasue of they way they have been brainwashed by the mediocre islamic lecturers in their midst, who subtly teach them the level of their faith is a reflection of how they dress. I dress in jeans and t shirts and they are my favourites !!

Addressing Infrastructural Challenges
by Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 4:20pm
In reading your feedback on this page and from personal experience, I understand the issues faced by Nigerians as a result of the challenge we face with infrastructure and this administration is of a mind to address those challenges. As many of you know, the nation's aviation sector has improved through heavy infrastructural investment to the point where we now have the world's highest aviation certification.
Likewise, we have made progress in our rail infrastructure and have resumed limited Mass Transit Rail Services in five of the six geo-political zones of the country. The sixth zone (the Southeast) is set to come on stream by the end of the year as is the Lagos to Kano service so that Nigerians in all zones can have an alternative to road transportation.

In the area of road transport, now that the budget has been passed, our efforts from last year will be continued but with the additional input of the Public Works Project which is designed to employ direct youth labour in the building of roads. The PWP is designed to build infrastructure and provide employment.

Additionally, now that the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority has been legislated into being, beginning from this year, we will have direct investment from that agency into infrastructure with the priority areas being Power and Roads.

I am sharing this with you today so you know that the pre-election vow I made to you to "promise less and deliver more" as well as the post election assurance that with God's help "I will never, never let you down" were words from my heart.

Obviously, Nigeria has many infrastructural and other challenges and I will like to meet them all, however, leadership is preeminently about managing resources and to do this we have to prioritize. I assure you that our nation's resources will be put to work to address those issues which affect the common man with a view to bettering the lot of the most needy Nigerians. GEJ

The local airport wing in Abuja is like a bus garage and Mr president wants us to believe that infrastrucutre in aviation is top notch when common things like AC cannot be put right.

Nigerians dont reason, Lets put your scneario that fashola sucks,,

You have a city of 18 million people and more thousands coming in everyday, There is no way he can finish everything in one term, what are u guys smoking?? Its gona take 30 Fasholas consectuively to uplift lagos state, Rome was not built in a day, it takes years of planning and implementation and of  orientation. He just bought new garbage dump trucks but that in itself is not enough. Revenue per citizen and FG allocation per citizen in  lagos state is still the lowest in nigeria. States like bayelsa and rivers have way much money to spend per head on socal services but u still dont hear about them.
You guys want everything to be perfect in 4 years, drainage sytem,, check, lights, check, roads, check,  Lagos state has more roads than any state in nigeria, man,, its not easy to rule a city of 18 million people and provide services for them with definitely little to no FG assistance.
Even a good road like in abuja built in lagos state wont last for more than 2 years,. the stress on the roads from all the tankers coming to the ports to load up on fuel , cars, motorcycles, man,, its too much, If Nigeria has functioning railway system to reduce the stress on the road and also if half the states in nigeria is working like lagos, then u wouldnt have all these stress on social services, What we should be asking is that the next governor in lagos state should outdo fashola. Continuity is the key here not present scenario, No doubt garbage is eating up lagos and the government should tackle it but u got to understand that lagos has so much problems and limited resources so u have to allocate resources effectively. We all did economics in school.
TO handle refuse effectively in lagos state, its gona take at least 6 mega refuse processing site with thousands of manpower and garbage bins positioned everywhere, So if u put that much money in refuse,  whats gona happen to roads? then u all gona come here and complain about the roads system not being taken care of ,
Its a procsss man,,, it takes years to cleans this mess up cus this mess we are in came from years of abuse and neglect by preceeding adminstatrion and its gona take more than 8 years to correct.

If you notice i made and emphasis on inner city roads which are not highways where tankers and heavy duty vehicles readily pass. Fashola does not have to do everything that is why we have LG responsible for facilities within their domains. Last time i checked Tinubu further created additional 37 LG in order to speed up development but we are actually retrogressing.

My question is what are the LG doing, i personally feel gov and Tinubu cannot criticise the LG because 50% of money allocated to them is always taken by the state gov for God knows what. The LG shares the remainder after salaries and nothing is done, otherwise how do i explain the road in front of a local govt office unmotorable.

Quality of job done by contractors or the actual traffic that the road carries daily?

Traffic volume should be no excuse as a road in Lagos should be designed for the expected volume of traffic with an added margin of 20% . I am an engineer that specialises in design and i know this.

The problem is the first reason you gave quality and these contractors are mainly govt boys who are friend with the govt and cannot be prosecuted. However, most of the roads have not even been touched in the last 12 years.

Thanks for yoy inputs but this thread is not about flooding as there are other threads to discuss that. The thread is about Lagos roads which are not motorable and these roads spans almost all the local govts . The worst roads are the inner city roads and Lagosians could attest to this. How good is the road on your street ?

I travelled to Abuja and was super impressed with Abuja roads and the city in general . I am aware it is the federal money but Lagos generates lots of money and could we understand what the LG money is used for aside payment of salaries and the primary health centres (clinics) who dont dispense drugs.

People like you dont know wats up around the world as far as rain for this year is concerned. Many countries with low sea level have experienced it and u expect lagos to be different. Even those with the best infrastructure and drainage systems lost lives in it. Flood causalities can only be reduced but cant be eradicated completely. If people like stop dropping refuse in front of your house, the causalities would be reduced.

Maybe you can help Fashola paint lagos better by stop making noise here. PUTA!

The issue here is not 100% prevention of floods but the state gave warning couple of months back but did not do enough to clear the drainages. We all know people dump things on canals but the state govt still owes them a duty to clear the blockages or install cameras and fine culprits like it is done in the west.

Adequate Emergency rescue should have been put in place to help victims and prevent deaths and suffering. These floods have become a yearly thing and it is a shame. IMO the 100 billion for lekki airport should be used in providing lagos with an adequate and effective drainage system. Let the private guys build the airport.

I travelled round at least 10 LGA and apart from the new Lekki expresway i could not find any inner city road motorable. In Oshodi Isolo LG , i could not find a single road without pot holes and to make matters worse the road in front of the LGA office has one of the biggest pot holes i have seen, same goes for the road in front of Ikeja LG office. Gbagada roads are just damn shite, Mushin roads are not to be mentioned, GRA ikeja roads are filled with several pot holes and so on.

I am aware there are federal roads, state roads and LG roads but roads within the LG are the worst of all, which makes me wonder why the state governor cannot intervene and sort these roads out. LAst time i checked the fund of the LG are paid through the state government and most govs deduct whatever they wished from the LG funds.

LG are the closest to the poeple but i cannot see any governance from the LGs. Fashola is praised everyday and I appreciate he is among the best amongst his mates but the state of Lagos roads are terrible. I hear Lagos has built more roads than Ghana but what about maintenance of the roads which is what make roads stand the test of time.

This brings me to the manner in which LG elections are held in Lagos. All ACN candidates are handpicked and are almost 99% certain of victory once Tinubu SELECTS them. These LG chairman are not answerable to the people as they know a second term ticket is in the hands of one man and not the people. I dont even think the LG chairman show loyalty to Fashola but rather it is to Tinubu.

These are my personal thoughts and open for discussion.

Jarus,

You miss the point. Someone with such beliefs should not head a body that is against or not in conformity with his religious beliefs. Are you going to argue that a strict muslim can be the CEO of an alcoholic brewery? The fact is that conventional banking does not conform with the Fiqh al-Muamalat (Rules on Islamic Banking). If you argue that Sanusi is not a strict Muslim, then I can understand that.

Sir, i think you miss the point because SLS had been in banking for over 20 years and was a CEO of Firt Bank before he was appointed the CBN governor. Yes riba is haram in islam but it is not forbidden in islam to work in a modern bank but i dont want to go into islamic jurispudence here. SLS as CBN governor is expected to put islamic banking under the table all because he is a muslim scholar? Certainly not ! The truth be told many non muslims in Nigeria have been programmed from birth to hate anything with an islamic tag.

You raised the the issue of OIC but i still do not understand how it affects the christians or other non muslim sin Nigeria, on the contrary it gives all Nigerians access to the interest free development loans of the Islamic Development Bank in comparison to the slave loans of the world bank.

ISLAMIC BANKING IS A BUSINESS AND VOLUNTARY ,IT IS NOT COMPULSORY . WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE AN ISSUE WITH SOMETHING YOU CAN IGNORE ?

Mactunji or wat shocked one can easily decipher from u dat u and your islam is not peacefull. at any little disagreement with wat u believ u result to name calling. the reason why Islam is not tolerant, always resulting to killing non belivers. I will still tell u the blunt truth thou am not expecting u to beliv that wat u defend is no close to peace but violent. Saying Islam is peacefull is like saying the sky is yellow gerrit!

Sister, have you ever thought that there is a difference between islam and muslims just as there is a difference between Christianity and christians and judaism and jews.

@Jamalah

Gentleman, back down from your statements, you need not ask Jarus to shut up. Here you are trying to beautify riba and linking it to loan sharks alone. You could come to the islam for muslim section in the religious section and let us debate riba as it affects the current world economy.

You clearly have an agenda and you see every issue from this mindset, islamic banking is not for you in the north alone as you are trying to do, islamic banking is for all Nigerians who would like to invest in it or deal with the bank. It is optional , it is OPTIONAL, IT IS OPTIONAL. how does something which is optional affect you for goodness sake. If you dont like it simply dont put your money in it. Take your SLS bashing elsewhere as everyone has told you here islamic banking in Nigeria started with Joseph Sanusi in the late 90s.

Your hallucination linked islamic banking to umar faruk , your agenda set mind linked islamic banking to hausa fulani supremacy and your mindset again tried to focus on a logic that when a percentage of the population are aginst something then that issue should be dropped. Even in democracy it does not work like that , when did bankling rules become a subject of the populations desires.

Guy back down as you have exposed your mindset and your agenda here will lead no where as we cans ee beyond our noses here.

Hmmm, this is an interesting development. So if those terrorists issue a fatwah on any political leader if he does not return looted funds immediately, we might see results. Hmmm

Maybe we need to go down that line and terrorize the looters in power, as long as innocent people are left alone. It appears the only thing these looters fear is the barrel of the gun grin grin
