Police in Louisiana have found a new video showing a Black teen leaving his dad’s home and getting into a car days before his dead body was found in a sugar cane field, a mysterious case that has sparked calls for a hate crime investigation.

Authorities said the Oct. 30 footage appears to show Quawan “Bobby” Charles sitting outside a neighboring business before running toward a car driven by a friend’s mother. That was hours before the boy’s family reported him missing and four days before cops found the 15-year-old’s body in Iberia Parish, about 20 miles away from Baldwin, where he lived.

An autopsy found that his death appeared “consistent with drowning,” but authorities are still investigating whether it was the result of an accident, a homicide or a suicide.

The case has sparked outrage in the community as the teen’s parents claim police were slow to investigate his disappearance and failed to issue an Amber Alert. The family also shared a graphic image of Quawan’s body that has drawn comparisons to the famous photo of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Black boy who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955.

Police say the case did not meet the legal criteria for an Amber Alert, which typically requires evidence that a child was abducted or was in imminent danger, among other conditions.

“We didn’t see where it felt that it met that criteria of an abduction or kidnapping because there was no eyewitnesses or no one to say that he had jumped into a vehicle, or someone kidnapped him or beat him and took him into that vehicle,” Assistant Chief Sam Wise, of the Baldwin Police Department, told local news outlet KATC on Tuesday.

The new surveillance video, which police reportedly obtained on Nov. 11, suggests Quawan, the driver of the car he got into and her passenger briefly went into the teen’s backyard to play with a dog, Wise told the station.

“And then they eventually got back into the car together, each took a turn opening up the door, got in the vehicle, drove off and left. There was no signs of a kidnapping or abduction at that time,” he said.

Attorneys for Quawan’s family said the driver and her 17-year-old son “took Bobby from his home without his parents' permission” that day. It’s still unclear if the pair has any involvement with the boy’s death.

The family has also complained that police tried dismissing their fears by telling them that “Bobby was probably at a football game” and didn’t try pinging the boy’s cellphone until three days after he went missing, the attorneys said in a statement last week.

Authorities insist they’re “working hard to ensure no stone is left unturned” in the investigation.

“I want to assure the public that I, and my team, are doing everything we can, and following every lead, to gather evidence into what happened in the untimely death of Quawan “Bobby” Charles,” Iberia Parish Sheriff Tommy Romero said in a news release Saturday.

Leaders for the local NAACP chapter have joined calls for a federal investigation into the case, which they said “looks like a hate crime.”

An autopsy report obtained by the Daily News shows the facial injuries on Quawan’s face were likely inflicted after his death.

“Post-mortem injuries on the face are likely aquatic animal activity from the decedent being found in water,” officials wrote in the report, which also cited “muddy water” in the boy’s airways, hyper inflated lungs and water in his sphenoid sinuses.
