Miss Chierika Ukogu, a 15-year old Nigerian student in Philadelphia, the United States yesterday donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to the needy in Abuja and Ukpor, Anambra State.
Good but this is not what Nigeria needs.

when those shoes are worn out. they will wait for her to bring more shoes.

and the Govt that suppose to provide enabling environment dont do so since they know Nigerians abroad will do something.

Nigerians must stand-up and fight for good life. Thats only way to go.

McKren:
Banks in Manchester can give u loan without collateral or even credit card because they can trace and profile you through a credit scoring system. They can verify the information about the address you give against what is held on National record.

Reason being because their is a National record, there is an identity system.
that bank consolidation by Soludo has done more harm than good to the masses
That it has not done anything and will not do anything for the masses so long the basics are missing.
Rather, the banks are busy advertising on CNN etc.

Exactly.

This is where he would have channel his energy by encouraging the President to ensure this basics-infrastructure exist.

Money is about trust and what is trust if I cannot confirm that you are what you said are.

The whole stuff is a 'system' not one-man race to show he has ideas. It is a team work, everything working in unity of purpose.

You will agree without that no matter your idea, it is going to fall flat sooner or later as no 'system capacity' to sustain it.

But this is Nigeria, everyone is just there to show their individual EGO.
PoliticsRe: Where Is Soludo's Banks Reform? by landis(op): 3:35pm On Jul 29, 2008
@McKren,
We also must remember that this policy can not work alone and needs some national identity system to succeed.
agreed, so why Soludo embark on something which needs basic infrastructure to successed?

That said. Without Local Govt; national identity system cannot work because they are the one close to the people;
they keep addresses, birth, death records etc.

But same Govt Soludo works, and had worked for,are busy trampling on Local Govt elections which further weakens their capacity.

who is going to compel them to be transparent when they contributed to politicians campaign expenses and help them to launder their money abroad
you have VALID point there.

All the money that were taken abroad was actually WITHDRAWN from Nigeria Bank accounts.

Where are these faceless Banks? How come we never hear about them?

What documents are submitted before these Banks transfers $BILLION out of Nigeria's economy.

what role did CBN plays in all this since 1999?

I'd like to know the capital projects these banks are funding? the consolidation is a good thing in principle but I think it was rushed and not effectively implemented.

Bank PHB's funding,UK education for those who meets their reqirements and interest rates, is quite ingenious but really has nothing to do with development. Soludo got it wrong
exactly. we dont need to shore-up capital base so that foreign firms can buy into our banks.

Their view is to make profit as quick as possible while our view is to grow and develop all facet of our economy.

we should rather have level playing field with clear rules and openess.

We should have seen 10 projects in each state, that are financed by the banks to grow the economy

Businesses under siege as banks increase lending rate
A quiet increase in interest rate on loans is being implemented by banks in a move that will further stifle the real sector already reeling from the debilitating effects of poor power supply.

The strategy which has been stripped of the officialdom is being communicated to bank clients including those with existing credit facilities with banks. Although the adjustment of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) two months ago is being blamed for the increasing rate, insiders said the bid to mop up deposits which came with enhanced interest on deposits is the more compelling factor.

The scramble to boost deposits had been prompted by the requirement that year-end financial calendar of banks be harmonized with December 2008 set as take off date. However, the deadline was last week extended to December 2009.

As letters are being sent out almost discretely to bank clients on increased interest rates to borrowers, particularly business people, there are concerns that already stifled businesses are once again under the sledge hammer of banks.

One of such letters from a bank put the blame for the increased on lending rates on the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) adjusted about two months ago.

The MPC had increased the MPR by 25 basis points to 10.25 percent in June 2, 2008.

The MPR is the rate at which the CBN lends to the banks. Consequently, this shot up the cost of funds in the market.

Based on that fact, most of the banks thus increased interest rates from 19.0 percent to 25 percent effective July 2008.

But a majority of experts, including business people who spoke with Business Day said the impact will be crippling.

Head of treasury in one of the banks said increase in MPR is not responsible for increasing lending rates. Rather, she said the ridiculous increase in deposit rates occasioned by the accounting year-end initially put at December 31, 2008 is responsible for the jump in lending rates.

She said there is no way deposit rates would climb up to 19 percent and will not affect lending rates.

The result of this increased lending rates, she said, will impact negatively on businesses, which as it were are managing to keep their heads above water.

Anthony Oyuwe, a Lagos based economist is also of the view that banks are not sincere when they say increased lending rates are driven by increase in MPR. According to him, the reason for the hike in lending rates is as a result of pressure put on the money market by banks who wanted to attract deposit at all costs.

He looked at the scenario and concluded that there is no way businesses will record growth under the present lending rates.

He lamented that businesses in the country have enough problems like scarcity of diesel, Lagos State Land Use Charge, among others to contend with, without that of increasing lending rates.

For Akin Aluko, manager, business training unit, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this will further complicate the comatose state of the economy. "When you take this along with the power problem being encountered by manufacturers what we get is a vicious cycle."

Ike Abugu, president of Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises says NASME is opposed to it. "We see it as another anti-SME decision of the financial authorities.

"We made a presentation to the finance committee of the House of Representatives some time last month. We let them know that it is single digit lending rate that operates in developed economies and same should apply here."

Abugu therefore called on the relevant authorities to bring interest rates down if they do not want the economy to collapse.

For Ike Nwobu, a business consultant based in Abuja , the governor of Central Bank is beginning to lose grip and bankers are starting to cash in on this. "If you take the AFC issue and the uncertainty of his tenure, you will understand what I mean," he said.

For Foluke Areola, national president, Fisheries Society of Nigeria, the decision will cripple business.
So where is the reform of SOLUDO?

It is clear that increased CAPITAL base does not translate to any BENEFIT to the people or improved the economy.

what a country!!!

Strong regional govt is the key so that by using economies of scale can pull together needed resources to develop. Awolowo did it in the old western region and Zik made his imapct in the old Eastern region.
the problem with that is that CENTRAL still have alll the power. And we saw how this was used in western region: Akintola + Ahmadu Bello.

What we need not power-sharing but equal power.

each region MUST have equall power and they all must agree to everything or it goes to VOTING.

My point: Adeniyi always lambasted the evils of govt in his Thisday Column, now he joined Yaradau Govt and he is telling us a big LIE.

Suddenly all his write-up was just to get noticed and get Govt appointment.

I may be wrong but deep down we all know; this would be a miracle: all roads fixed in 2011

PoliticsYaradua To Fix All Roads By 2011--segun Adeniyi by landis(op): 9:22am On Jul 25, 2008
Segun Adeniyi was interview recently. This was his response.

I would like this documented. 2011 is just  3years away.

Question:
There is a general feeling that the President is ill prepared to govern Nigeria , that he has no plan or vision for the country and many say this because of the seeming inaction and I can give you an example. Last year, the Minister of Transportation under a media blitz visited the Benin-Ore express road yet as I am talking today, that road remains as impassable as it was last year…
Segun Adeniyi answer:
The president has taken a different approach and I would say that before year 2011, he intends to deliver most of these roads, some with no fewer than eight lanes and when that happens what people would be talking about is the quality of the roads and not the amount spent on bad roads. All the plans are in place and some of these roads will be concessioned with work started before the end of the year.
Come 2011, if nothing is deliver on Lagos-Ore Road, Segun Adeniyi should be banned from any public office in Nigeria.
He was a journalist that always speak against Govt Evil when still at thisday newspaper.

PoliticsHouse Of Rep Throws Out Motion On Yar'adua's Medical Trips Abroad! by landis(op): 2:39pm On Jul 24, 2008
A motion seeking to cut the frequency of medical trips abroad by President Umaru Yar'Adua and other public and Political office holders was yesterday floored in the House of Representatives.

The Motion entitled a "Need for Public and Political Office Holders to curb Frequent Oversea Medical Treatment" was sponsored by Rep. Daniel "Dino" Melaye (PDP Kabba/ Ijumu-Kogi State ) and 27 others.

The Motion noted that "The frequent trips undertaken by public and political office holders abroad for medical check-ups and treatment which could be ordinarily handled in our hospitals", regretting that "the negative impact of this phenomenon on the social and economic development of our great Country is a situation where such minor ailments could be diagnosed and treated in the Country."

The Motion adviced that "Political Office Holders as servant leaders, must live by example in having preference for made-in-Nigeria goods and services"

It added by regretting that the "The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has not assisted Nigerians in off-setting medical bills and the need for the review of the Act."

The Speaker of the House, Dimeji Bankole, who presided skipped debate on the Motion and called for amendments to its prayers which were all thrown out and the Motion itself was subsequently killed.

The Motion sought among other things to get the House "Mandate the Committee on Health to work out the modalities in which our Specialist and Teaching Hospitals could be better equipped with modern state of the art facilities and trained staff.
"Urge the Federal Government to discourage Public and Political Officers from undertaking medical trips abroad and where such trips are quite mandatory, the medical trips abroad and where such trips are quite mandatory, the medical bill incurred would be borne by the patient." Among other prayers
if any one still dreaming of better Nigeria, such people should have a re-think.

This is not the route to go.

developmental aids have poured into africa but nothing to show for it.

the people would become lazy and only wait for hands-out.

The route is to ensure the GOVT respond to development of the people: any means is ok.

OBJ spent $16bil for NEPA and what you see is DARKNESS, yet the people are not in street.

It is time for hardcore revolution. Nigeria has money/resource to take GOOD CARE of its people.
