souladot: Wow! I just finished 65 pages of an interesting, highly educative (and fun-poking) blog, after many days. The journey from page 1 till now has been worth it.Hindsight never knew what she started 3 years ago would stay active this long. Thank goodness for tough guys like basking4me, fnk, jamp, valrinz . . ., and now this penmight guy for keeping this thread alive and active.
I've been infused with the right momentum to start, courtesy of u guys. I can say I've studied poultry business for free from this blog. I already know my startup cost and the profit to expect (all things being equal). U guys are blessed for the selfless service.

I'll be starting in some months' time with 1500 POL and 500 Broilers. I'm still open to more knowledge. Fnk, jamp and others, kindly forward those reports to my mail (and yes, even though it's 2011). souladot@ymail.com Thanks y'all

PENMIGHT: Thanks for the pieces of advice. I ve no plan of expansion for now. Even if i want to, where is d finances? Though my farm is slightly remote than others, it is not outrightly isolated. Many other farms , like my friend's, is within stone throw and and they cant even keep up with the demands for eggs. Besides, i am planning on having a farm shop in town.

Please, around what time of the year is the glut period? Do u ve a cheap way of getting the cages? With ur experiences and contacts, can u please help in any way possible to solve the cage issue? I will be appreciative!
My manager has been very dedicated so far. He is young and experienced in his own little way. I am developing a brotherly relationship with him and try my best to make the package worth his effort and also make life comfortable as much as possible. He resides in d farm permanently except there is a need to leave and that must be done on permission. I also adopt some check and balances monitoring approach. So far, so good.
I also ensure vet personnel visit regularly.
The birds are doing pretty well for now. I pray disaster does not set in.
Where is ur farm, wouldnt mind visiting to learn more from ur wealth of exposure.

Thanks.

I can supply you locally made layer cages at a competitive price. Cages are made of galvanized steel and equipped with nipple drinkers. You can reach out to me via femmiedot@yahoo.com

Hi Guys,

I need some insight from farmers with hands on experience. I bought 3 boxes (150 birds) of broiler chicks about two weeks ago and their mortality has been very high. They die in drones and I've lost almost two thirds of the flock. I've done all I can, bought antibiotics, bought a coccidiostat drug to no avail. I'm trying to narrow down the cause to forestall further occurrence and from those I've spoken to so far, some insights stand out:

1.) Non fumigation of cage - I had used the cage to rear birds till market weight previously but did not fumigate. However, I let the cage lay in the sun for about a month after cleaning before stocking the new chicks. Guess it was an oversight on my part not to fumigate. What diseases could have been transmitted?

2.) Non vaccination of day old chicks against Marek's disease - A friend suggested that the day old chicks may not have been vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery. He asked if I vaccinated them myself which I responded in the negative. Now, I read Marek's disease has no cure and it appears I'm stuck on that one as I cannot vaccinate them any longer.

My fear on this is that would it not be overdose if they had been vaccinated at the hatchery and I gave them another on arrival at the farm just to be doubly sure?

3.) Finally, has anyone here based in Lagos taken a bird for post mortem analysis before? If yes, where can I get it done on my birds.

I'll appreciate concrete insight on this issue...no point brooding over the lost birds...

Hi guys,

Is there any broiler farmer left out there to help me with my challenge?

Quite a number of my broiler chicks are having leg problems. Six of them are now lame from a batch of 50, though I decided to quarantine them when I noticed so their peers don't step on them. That decision has made them survive till now.
