Welcome to CORE network, where is ur cisco? oya bring it out cos ds is where it will b VERY useful ....for d sake of core network ll b joining both telecom n ISP 2geda. Yes it knw its diff, ISP's core don't v MGW, SGSN n GGSN ...bla bla, ll b joining dem cos of d similar operations wc include policy based routing, quality of service, frame relay n d likes

CORE (ISP & telecom)
With ur skills being @ d routing level of CCNP u shld b able to manage here but somehow I doubt it, Y? Your skill set for now vary a little frm what is needed, how do I mean, let's break it down ;

4 now ur skills include, subnetting, eigrp, ospf, vtp, vlan, redistribution & a little of BGP (ccnp u said u've started huh) fine! But more often dan nt wat will b needed in d core network will b advanced BGP, frame relay, MPLS, QoS, then RTP, RTCP, SIP, H.323 for VoIP. Sure ur skill set will b needed but @ minimal, to quickly chip in d core network tend more towards CCIP dan CCNP, so if u wanna marry cisco n telecom/ISP u knw where to b looking @ though I got a mail frm cisco last week saying CCIP will retire in October ds yr, but there's n alternative .....find dt out! Wanna keep d post short

Back to our real deal wc is gaining 'valuable' experience during IT, d truth is though u r needed with ur skills @ d core unlike access wc is now mainly 'unwired' (wireless I mean...lol) ds places r too sensitive for a fresher @ d end u 'might' nt gain enuff cos ur activities might range frm cleaning d routers n switches, watching d engineers do their tin, some of whom will like 2 hide stuffs frm u (had a similar crazy case with a mechanic 2days ago) to checking if d light is green, red or amber ....(hehehehe). Don't b surprised if u finally get close to one of those babies (routers, plain n muti layered switches) n u find a label on dem saying " DO NOT TOUCH"......hehehehe, do I blame dem, NO! lemme give a simple scenario (chai ds post is alrdy long again)

U remember wen practicing on our packet tracer/gns 3 n we r doing routing protocols, each time we mess up with protocols we (amateurs) r always quick to use d command 'no ip routing', trying ds on d core router of swift or ipnx shldnt get d fellow just sacked but also arrested, dt simple command is possible of costing dem millions of naira, yet some newbies might nt see anytin wrong in it afterall its a valid cisco command and it works fine on packet tracer. Bottom line; ds places r too sensitive for an IT student, u 'might' end up serving tea/coffee and watching d engineers do their tin (wc isn't bad anyway)

Wat do I suggest? Well who m I to say, 'don't go here', 'stay here', but just like ayox said, if u wanna stay with u cisco for now, u v suggested wat I think is d best option in my little opinion, a firm dt does networking for oda firms, u said telnet, there u will have a little more freedom, crip cables, mess up with routers n switches (afterall dey r nt yet in a live network), partake in diff project n see diff scenarios, u shld b active rada dan passive

Don't get it twisted, if u don't get a place of choice pick d one u see and stay put even if it means serving tea/coffee in a teleco or ISP, don't b like me , I didn't get telecom during my IT so I rejected odas.....whether its a wise or f**lish decision, m yet to knw buh d latter seem to b d case

Proceeding further, there r various dept in telecom n ISP but d two of concerns r ACCESS network n CORE network, how do u fit in? Let's break it down 2geda.... (it will b lengthy, radical but worth it)

ACCESS NETWORK (ISP)
Technology is forcing pple out of jobs, during d days wen wi fi was used for MAN, ur work here will involve installing n configuring radios/access point plus antennas, u'll b ensuring perfect line of sight btw d ISP n d customer premises, u'll lead d cable frm d radio to likely a router n feed others....bla bla, it will b fun cos u'll move frm site to site seeing diff problems n scenarios n gaining experience, u might also find urself in mini base stations belonging to d ISP cos one station can't cover a city

But wat do we v today with d ISPs, every1 is going WiMAX, a perfect non line of site technology, a customer just need to plug a pen-drive-like device to a system in mushin or ikeja and there's is a connection to a base station in balaraba musa in VI, to make matter worse, just dis one station can serve d whole of lagos, wats more customer premise equipments r now plug n play, d pen-drive-like device or d bigger table-top one, u don't v much business with ISP access network as an IT student.

Hmmmmn, enuff technical jargons dey here, ll try 2 b simple and str8, truly u v a lot of work here unlike dt of d ISP, u v d radio network planning & optimization u also v d pple doing installation n commissioning, to b blunt n candid if u come here u'll spend 4-5 months of ur IT period bin confused n nt gaining much, wen dey tell u dey r planning scrambling codes for 3G, u won't knw y and won't knw d alternative of dt in 2G is freq reuse, wen dey start talking SDCCH n TCH level to reduce call drop, or pilot pollution,drive testing or co channel interference...bros d truth is u've gotta study b4 u enter ds place n I doubt if a coy will b ready to send an IT student on course, if u go in as IT to dt place u r 'likely' to serve tea/coffee n buy sweet sensation or MR. BIGGS for d engineers there, if u don't get me, I mean w r 'likely' to end up as errand boy that's if dey even allow u here. Telecom coy (both vendors n operators) r multinationals....more often dan nt its nt a place where u perform experiment by tryin to discover urself.

Frm my observation I will say bleak, sorry I mean to say 'very bleak', nobody gives a fu*k abt u, I mean us, every job vacancy dese days comes with a sieve dt d freshman can't pass thru, so I suggest uve got to b aggressive too, keep knocking on doors, d young guy @ d front office in netcomm won't allow u in, he won't collect ur CV either saying u shld submit it on their site, d hefty security in huawei n alcatel won't let u in either but they will take ur CV, I don't knw if d dude in huawei will submit for u but d dude in alcatel will, d beautiful busty lady in IPNX will smile saying 'we r nt taking pple now, buh u can still submit',

Here I think strategic networking is key, now don't confuse it with 'long leg', long leg according 2 me is, I studied yoruba with a 3rd class my dad was d former MD of union bank so I got a job with UBA by skipping all tests n exams wc I cldnt pass in d first place........I c strategic networking as, m ccip n cwna certified, writing my last paper for mcitp, den I went to see my friend, met his dad who liked d way I talked, introduced me to his colleague who took me to an engineer in 21st century who claimed there is no space but linked me with a dude in VDT n I got d chance for a small interview n....viola!
First thing first y u r doing d search, don't forget to constantly go back to d books, in dis field we've just gotta b sound there no much chance for trial n error with a live network, strategic networking I say again, don't underestimate dt dude u met in d BRT, wen u meet pple try asking dem their area of specialization, if it tallies with urs, don't talk abt job buh rada set up a discussion on d technologies, let dem c y u prefer frame relay to mpls even if nt visible b logical or y u prefer microwave to fiber optics.....

WiMAX is just bin rolled out in nigeria, LTE is still in its testing phase in an IT inclined country like india, dese 2 technologies r 4G tech, I can bet u dey r nt on d syllabus, immediately below is 3G (WCDMA like UMTS, HSUPA n co in d 3GPP and CDMA2000 like dem EV.DO n EV.DV in d 3GPP2) and if dis will b touched it will b @ d surface, if RF planning n optimization is included u can't get hands on, abi shey nor b nigerian univ again? M a product of one

We all know wats obtainable, u will end up with courses like data networks, transmission systems, digital signal processing (DSP) and some programming plus may PSTN/ISDN with SS7, if u wanna b telecom techie dis aint enuff, u might get a job wit a teleco cos of d lil respect for second degree but den u might b closer to admin or management (y nt MBA then), if u r @ d tech ull v 2 keep up wit d pace b doing lotta short runs (courses n studies) outside d univ.

My idea is y nt take a master degree in sometin else info tech like ajanlekoko suggested den include dis short runs dt will keep u as a telecom techie THAT IS IF TELECOM ENGINEERING IS WHAT U WANT OOOOOO, it will even help with diversity.

To d issue of travelling, y don't u like it, is it cos of d dear of accident like my mum or cos of boko haram, lol, have u considered d fact dt because of d diff weather condition in lagos, kano, n jos d RNCs, BTSs , BSCs n d likes will b subjected to diff temp (even despite d AC) n give diff problems, diff problems will occur as a result of dense pop in lag n sparse pop in niger, pico n fento cells will n if possible fento cells will b deployed in lag, ph, abj n d likes while macro cells will b found in kastina, diff all give rise to diff configurations, scenarios, problems n troubleshooting techniques, I think I wanna experience it all, u neva knw wat will b useful for u wen u become a consultant, ts just my tots anyway. To d issue of hiding info, @blackgold, I don't think I understand, mayb u want to shed more light , frm d little dt I knw, info in telecom r majorly divided into two, technologies n hardware info. (nt forgetting dt d hardware also Include softwares 2 drive dis hardware).
with d little I knw dese technologies r d same all over d world, load control is load control, rake receiver is rake receiver, OVSF n scrambling codes r all d same, dese technologies r d same b it with HWE, ALU, ERIC, or even mtn n glo, so any staff who claims dey r hiding such things could just head over to google or take some short term course n, viola, make a small publication abt it n distribute it to all tech staff thereby shaming d Indians n Chinese, its time we let dem knw dey r in our country n dey shld stop forming DON,

D oda part wc is d hardware info can b hidden if dey want as d info is always specific to d company, ZTE used software defined radio (SDR) wc include LMT n Net Numen, if huawei wants to hide there own dey can go ahead afterall such info will nt b relevant wen u move on to ALU, NSN or Eric. , once again, my tots.

ttcmobile, i am a graduate of ttcmobile, i was with dem last summer last year, i did transmission n RF with dem, as far as nigeria is concerned, dey r d best, take my world 4 it, not even now dat dey av introduced WiMAX, u'll get value 4 ur money, but if u can add btw 500 - 550k to dat 150k ( i knw dats much) u can come 2 india, convergence labs 2 b specific, i learnt abt d skool on dis very thread 2, m a regular visitor 2 dis thread, i come in as invisible, wit 700k, u go finish work 4 india,,

apart frm convergence wc has got a fee of abt 180k for 6months telecom training, u will also go 2 ZOOM (anoda skool) there will take courses like, ccna, mcitp, linux, exachange server, hardaware n networking plus including ccnp for around 60k, and dont even go there, d quality of d lecture is superb, zoom has proved ova time 2 b dis best in hyderabad, i've gained so much frm dis thread, in fact it is d bedrock of my yet 2 begin telecom career, so c me as just giving back, take all my words 4 it, and yes, i am talking frm experience, 2moro my morning lecture is @ convergence and my afternoon lecture is @ zoom, so i am talking frm wat i go thru nt wat i am told, i dont knw d owner of zoom n i dont knw d owner convergence so dont c me as marketing, , @ convergence u will do course like:

no matter wat, going 2 telecom training skools will give u theory and d foundation, dey will only try their best possible 2 give u practicals ( even wit convergence labs here in india) wc can neva b like actually working or doing internship with a teleco, but how can u get d chance 4 intern wen u av no knowledge of telecom, d computer science, physics n electrical electronic as got little or nothing 2 do with telecoms, so in d long run, telecom training skools r nt a waste of money in my opinion, just make sure u get one dat can give u value 4 money,
