Ok, now Young Dreams has stopped making sense for me. All this secret, corner-corner, budding romance between Rachna and Vihaan is not leading anywhere. And Seema, Mayank's mum is starting to irritate the living daylights out of me. angry After all the wahala that Mayank's previous wife Charu caused, she should be glad that Gunjan (Mayank's new wife) is now married to her son, and she is not a trouble maker. Not so? Instead, Seema is back to her old tricks, and trying to cause trouble between Mayank and Gunjan. Some people never learn...honestly! angry

As for Reach for the Stars, Raghav is just too much. Cool, calm, collected and rather hot. Chai! cool And the scene where he was injured and Kalpana had to hold him till morning under the rain, was so touching. For now, I am waiting for Reach for the Stars to continue with its interesting storyline. Something tells me that Raghav is going to cause confusion among the single girls in that movie! cheesy

King of Hearts is dragging too much. All the Bansi and Shabnam aspect should be dealt with quickly, abeg. For just how long will their evil plans be allowed to thrive? shocked

You have good points no doubt. But for me, NO, NO and NO. What is good for you may not be good for me, different tales for different folks... Let me give you another experience;

I have an uncle (a yoruba man) working in kano and he married an hausa woman. when fight broke out in the north between hausa and yoruba, some of my uncles friend were killed, so he decided to run down to Ibadan with his wife and 4 children, but to his greatest dismay, the family refuses to allow him go with their daughter and children. He relocated some years back and since then he has only succeeded in getting custody of one of his children. The rest is stories... Experience, they say, is the best teacher.
Well, everyone is entitled to his own opinion. But for me, I still firmly believe that marrying within your own ethnic group is not a guarantee that your marriage would be happier and more successful, than the marriages of those who married outside their ethnic group. undecided

As for your uncle's case, please find out the facts very well. He and his spouse may have had some deep-seated unresolved problems, that came to the fore when he decided to relocate to the south. He only used the cultural difference as an excuse.

I know several couple from different ethnic groups similar to the one shared by your uncle and his wife (i.e. Hausa/Yoruba) who have lived comfortably & peacefully in the south for years. Afterall, your uncle's wife and her people knew he was a Yoruba man from the south, before she married him. Didn't she ever follow him to the south to see his family or parents, while they were together? What led to her sudden aversion? Anyway, to each man his own... sad

I agree with almost all you wrote.

But despite increasing inter tribal and inter ethnic marriages, the vast majority still marry within. I can only talk of the experiences of those I know. Not of those I do not know. My submission never claimed to be a scientific position.

Centuries ago, when most people still lived and died within one village or a small geographical location, my ancestors already married from faraway tribes. Aunts married outside in the 1950s already.

My observation of unsuccessful inter tribal marriages mostly fall within the past 15 to 20 years. And strictly only females marrying men of other tribes.
As for women we married from other tribes, it has been phenomenal success. Especially Igbo women.
Oh yes, a majority of people still marry within their own ethnic group. But this debate is not about whether a greater proportion of people marry within their ethnic group or not. sad

This is about the fact that marrying within your ethnic group, is not a cast iron guarantee of marital success and happiness, as opposed to marrying outside it. All marriages encounter one kind of challenge, difficulty or issue at one time or the other due to a whole load of factors, irrespective of whether the spouses come from the same ethnic group or not. What matters most is how you navigate through them, in order to find lasting peace. undecided

Have you asked yourself, that why are more marriages falling apart in the past 15 to 20 years than it did, many years ago? Is it just due to cultural differences? Or is there something more? Aren't marriages conducted among spouses who hail from the same ethnic group failing, as well? huh

Yes, I agree with you. But, honestly, I have relative peace in my marriage. That is not to say that others who married from other tribe does not enjoy same. But, I can only advice someone based on what I have experienced and see others go through. That is why I will always say "Marry from your tribe"

Imagine the teacher asking your child from which tribe are you? Then your child will say, my father is a yoruba man but my mother is from Igbo/hausa. Why not save the stress. Even the prophets that are of old (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) married from their tribe, So, what is my problem if I cannot marry from my tribe.
Nobody is saying you cannot marry from your tribe. What we are saying is that those who marry within their tribe, are not better or worse off than those who marry outside their tribe. So no one should dissuade those who wish to marry outside their tribe. cheesy

I always tell people, that it is not about the tribe you marry from, but about the kind of family you marry from, and also the character of the person you are getting married to, as well as the emotional bond or connection that you both share. undecided

If a child is asked what tribe he belongs to, he is free to provide the answer he desires, as long as he understands his unique identity. cool Besides, what is wrong with a child claiming both ethnic groups which his parents belong to? Is it a crime or an offence? Most times, children would claim their paternal heritage, as our society is structured along patrilineal lines.

As for the prophets of old, please tell me where Moses' wife came from? Was she an Israelite? huh Queen Esther who saved her people, married a king who was not from Israel. Even the lineage of our Lord Jesus had Ruth included in it. Ruth was a Moabite, who married into the Hebrew family of Elimelech and Naomi. Please go through the Bible and check the lineage of the prominent families in it.

What the patriarchs preached against was marrying other tribes that were involved in idolatry. Today, there are Christians from different ethnic groups who believe in the redemption work of our Lord Jesus. Do you still believe such people should not get married because they hail from different tribes, despite the fact that they share the same faith? sad

Good write up no doubt. But that is your experience and what I have written is the little experiences I have gathered over time.

Wait a minute, the question is: why going through the stress of all you have written when you can actually have it easy marrying from your tribe. My marriage is over 16 years now and I have less stress training my children the way I want because my wife is from my tribe. I am a businessman and rarely stays at home, so if I married from other tribe, how will my wife who supposedly does not hear my language train them in my mother's tongue and vice versa.

All of our social functions are just a stone throw away and not thousands km away. Again, remember traditions differ, I followed a friend to Ogoja for his in law burial, we saw hell because of the demand of the community before they bury the old man (my friend was totally annoyed and regretted marrying from them, I have to pet him in most cases).
So you believe there is no stress marrying from your own tribe? shocked Na wa, o! Every marriage has its own peculiar challenges, demands and stress, whether you marry from your own tribe or not. Like I said before, language, cultural and ethnic difference can be resolved with wisdom, understanding & empathy. sad

If your wife is from another ethnic group and cannot understand your language, what stops you as a man from getting an elderly relative from your side to live with you and teach your own children your language? huh Or you can take them to your hometown regularly for short breaks and holidays, so they can get used to the language.

Distance can no longer be used as a barrier, because now there are various modes of travel from airplanes to ferry services and even rail, in some areas.

As for the experience your friend had in Ogoja, accept my sympathy. undecided Obviously, his own spouse who hails from Ogoja had failed to familiarise himself/herself with the customs and demands of their people, especially when it comes to burial rites. And he/she had also failed to inform your friend on what to expect from their people. sad This was caused by a lack of communication, tact & diplomacy on both sides.

Every community and ethnic group has their own peculiar burial rites, customs and demands which varies from one place to the other. Even if your friend had hailed directly from Ogoja, do you think he would not have found it difficult to meet the cultural demands of those people?

I am not babalawo to know.
But most of them said they wanted to avoid those things by marrying outside of tribe.

But they got even worse marrying outside.

But perhaps they turned down guys that might have been better within tribe by deliberately choosing to go outside. At least, the siblings who married within tribe remain married, and from what is known, those ladies appear to have got a better deal.

Therefore maybe your question should have been directed at the ladies who were biased against their own tribe. They used the experiences of some relatives from a previous generation to negatively judge their own tribe. Maybe they should have realised that whether within or outside tribe, things can go awry. My unscientific observation is that for those who married around same time within tribe, divorce rate is much lower than those who went outside. Maybe just a coincidence, but it is as it is.

Marriage is not that easy. You need every support structure you can get. Friends, family, etc.
While love is great, it can be fickle and can also fade. Mills & Boon love exist only in Mills & Boon. grin grin

Let's not fool ourselves: race, tribe, religion are still very important factors people consider when marrying. I have seen it across many countries. What would be ideal in 21st century and what happens in reality do not always sync.
For those who got a bad deal marrying outside their tribe, there are several others who got great deals (or an even better deal) by also marrying outside their own tribes. cheesy

Everyone's case is different. So free your mind, bro'. Challenges such as race, language, ethnicity etc., can always be navigated and solutions can also be found if such situations are tackled with wisdom, understanding and empathy. undecided

Marriages that occur within the same ethnic group can also be very tricky, especially for women as there is often an assumption that the newly-wedded spouse already knows all the do's and don'ts of their ethnic group, when in fact that person may not be aware of what they are. undecided

Culture is dynamic and it changes, within each ethnic group. Acculturation and exposure also have a part to play in what we know and how we behave. Any errors of omission or commission by a member of the same ethnic group could be viewed in a hostile manner and treated as if it were done on purpose, instead of being blamed on ignorance if the said offender had hailed from a different ethnic group. sad

I have seen people from a particular ethnic group who claimed they cannot marry outside their group, but ended up getting married to foreigners when they went abroad, and such marriages were needed to regularise their stay. There is nothing new under the sun. Some worked out, others did not. There is no law cast in stone that says once you marry within your ethnic group, you are guaranteed a happy and successful marriage.

From things I have seen in my young life,I have realised that its not about the tribe but the setting of the family, there are good and bad people in every tribe, however I personally can never even date a Hausa man not to talk of marry(reasons best known to me),but with the exception of hausas, a good man from any other tribe shoudnt be an issue, learning the language and adapting to the culture of one's spouse may take a while, but its not impossible, the problem is most tribalistic parents don't give their in-laws the chance. my former boss made all his daughters marry from their tribe ,two of the thrwee of his son in-laws turned out to be assholes, infact the last societal wedding lasted for 36 hours ,$5000 gift given to the bride by her aunty broke up the marriage under 36 hours, she was lucky to be alive from the beating Mr tribe man gave her

My candid advice to the men/women that cares: do not let this so-called 'love sentiments' blindfold you into marriage. You are going into a relationship that will last for more than 40 years, so why choosing to spend that long years of marriage struggling to hold it together. There are so many more beautiful and good ladies from your tribe, so, why not choose from them and enjoy a fruitful marriage with peace.

See the following:

1. if you are a yoruba man and your wife is igbo, what language did you think your child will adopt and speak fluently; certainly igbo and not yoruba. That means your child will not be able to speak your own language.

2. Your family will not have an official local dialect, except english.

3. You stand the chance of always going very far (more than 7 hours journey) whenever your partner is having a social function. Think of the transportation costs and its stress.

4. Anytime your in-laws are around, you will look like a stranger because you cannot hear them when they are discussing in their dialect.
When people propagate examples using stereotypes, it becomes totally myopic. sad Even if both parents hail from different tribes, who says the children cannot be bilingual? shocked I know several families where the parents come from different ethnic groups, and yet all their kids understand both languages perfectly. I also know families where both parents come from the same ethnic group, yet their kids cannot speak a word of their local language or dialect, except English. Probably because they have become really Westernised. Children learn what they are taught. undecided Most children that you see speaking only English, were just not taught how to speak their native languages by their parents.

I had a friend who corrected this deficiency by insisting that his kids spend their Christmas vacations in the South-east, while they spend Easter in their mum's hometown in the West. One of his older relatives who also lived with the family helped them with their domestic chores, and ended up teaching those kids their native dialect. The entire family lives in Lagos. After doing this for 5 years, the kids now speak the languages of both parents perfectly, and can understand both dialects well. cheesy

As for distance, please stop using that as an excuse. Every single day, people travel from one state to the other in this country, across the breadth and length of the land either for work, trade, commerce or political reasons. So why can't they do the same for valuable relationships? huh And there is air-travel now, so what else? In Nigeria, if you have the funds you can easily fly from East to West, or North to South in about 1 hour, or less than 2 hours. A few areas also have train services, so what is the excuse? I bet if someone told you that a contract worth a few millions was being kept for you in another town, about 7 hours drive away, you would hop into the nearest vehicle to make that journey without thinking twice! undecided

And if your in-laws are enlightened, cultured respectful people who are not narrow-minded, they would speak to you in a language you understand. Most folks in Nigeria understand pidgin, from the youngest to the oldest, so na wetin remain? undecided And what law says you cannot learn another language to a reasonable extent, enough to hold a conversation or dish out greetings, if you have to? Are people forbidden from learning the language of their spouses, after marriage? Chai!! shocked

My neighbour Oghenetega who is Urhobo grew up in Lagos, and speaks pure Yoruba in addition to her native language. Are you saying that if she marries a Yoruba person, she would not be able to cope with her in-laws or in her marriage? cheesy

Very desirable but not easy.

You will have to work harder to make it work. Especially if one or both party's parents are against it.

Should things go awry, you will have to bear a lot of poo in silence. Just to avoid "I told you so" from the anti/suspicious side.

I have noticed the poo the majority of female relatives who married into other tribes have had to put up with. They went into these marriages with much naivety and enthusiasm, brushing aside concerns raised by some people. Their usual position was "people withing our tribe do these things too".

They have put up with worse things they initially said they wanted to avoid within tribe. Such as the hubby impregnating other women, hubby secretly using joint property deeds to secure loans without wife knowing, reckless behaviour of covering corruption of a female colleague at work and getting fired from a very lucrative job without benefits/pay off, making wife sole provider for family, secretly taking unsecured loans that wife has to be paying back all over the place later, etc.

Those guys did just about every stupid thing possible and even surpassed the fears of some family members. cheesy grin

About half got divorced but the rest soldiered on, albeit not happily most times. Very unfortunate.

Going into inter-ethnic marriage, please go in with a VERY thick skin. The odds may already be against you ab initio.

I suppose if it works, it can be very sweet. Like the lovely ladies from other tribes married into our family. grin cheesy

Of course they might have worked hard to endear themselves in the beginning. Once they proved their loyalty, it has been all love.

Most have blended in so well that they are not distinguishable from natural born daughters of the family.
Are you trying to say that if they had married within their own ethnic group, they would not have met people with such dubious traits? shocked Guy, free your mind. The good, bad & ugly exist in every single tribe, in every district and on every single street. sad Wake up and smell the coffee.

And there are many others, like them. I also know a couple who hailed from the same local govt area, but different villages. If you look hard enough, you would also notice couples from the same ethnic background whose marriages did not work out, too. So free your mind. undecided
