The python and other such totems mean more than the chief could explain, they’re also symbolic of order within which there a rights of passage. For the sake of foreign notions of society we cannot simply do away with out primordial cultural norms and values, doing so leads to feral youths, undisciplined men and the chaotic society. For related reasons, wars in many African nations lead after to ferial youth culture. Same phenomena aeries in Ghettos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCc_-pYXdZc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5gUQ6fTR3Q Feral youths |

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has criticised the suspension of Blessing Okagbare at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games ongoing in Japan. In a statement on Saturday, AFN President, Dr Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, noted that the Federation received the news that the athlete tested positive for human Growth Hormone with great disbelief. He described Okagbare, 2008 Beijing Olympics Long Jump silver medallist, as an athlete with impeccable records since her emergence on the track and field scene she was 16 years old. “She has served the country in the best possible way without any scandal and is one of the most disciplined athletes not just in Nigeria but in the world over. “She has always flown the flag of the country high at every level and that is seen in her career progression,” the AFN chief stated. Okagbare and her Nigerian counterpart, Grace Nwokocha, were scheduled to run in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m after they both qualified from their respective heats before the news of her suspension broke. According to him, Okagbare as an athlete has been tested over 12 times – both blood and urine – this since the beginning of the year. He affirmed that in all of the tests conducted, nothing indicting was discovered and as such, “there must have been a mistake somewhere”. As they expect the result of the B Sample, Shehu-Gusau clarified that Okagbare was not banned but only suspended from the games. “We would also like to appeal to Nigerians to stand by her and put her in prayers, as we as a Federation continue to do everything in our power to encourage her as her well-being and mental health is our utmost priority at this time,” he added. Growth Hormone is a non-specified substance on the 2021 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List and a provisional suspension is mandatory following an adverse analytical finding for such substance under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), the independent body created by the World Athletics that manages all integrity issues for the sport, had announced that the Olympic medallist tested positive for Human Growth Hormone. It said it collected a sample from Okagbare during an out-of-competition test on 19 July and the WADA-accredited laboratory that analysed the sample notified it of the adverse analytical finding at mid-day on Friday. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Team Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare with immediate effect after a sample collected from the sprinter tested positive for human growth hormone, even as The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) kicks, saying it received the suspension news with disbelief. The AIU, which is an independent integrity body created by the World Athletics, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the growth hormone is a non-specified substance on the 2021 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. https://thenationonlineng.net/afn-kicks-over-okagbares-suspension/ |
What was officiating like given that Japan is the Home Team, i.e Japanese Olympics? I've just been reading that US are unhappy with some officiating and this reminded me.... |
Google’s time crystal discovery is so big, we can’t fully comprehend it. Forget Google Search and Fuchsia. Researchers from Google, Stanford, Princeton, and other universities might have made a computer discovery so big we can’t fully comprehend it yet. Even Google researchers aren’t entirely sure that their time crystal discovery is valid. But if it turns out to be accurate, then Google might be one of the first companies to give the world a crucial technological advancement for the future. Time crystals will be an essential building block in quantum computers, the kind of computers that can solve complex problems with incredible speed and power technologies that aren’t even invented. What is a quantum computer? Google isn’t the only company building quantum computers, and these types of machines keep popping up in the news with regularity. Quantum computers won’t reach your phone, and they’re not going to play games. Even if they did, Nintendo will totally ignore the latest computer technology when designing future consoles. As The Next Web explains, we plan on using quantum computers for challenging problems. Examples include warp drives that could make fast interstellar travel possible. And medical technology that could cure virtually any disease. https://bgr.com/tech/googles-time-crystal-discovery-is-so-big-we-cant-fully-comprehend-it/ |
Mopolchi:That is one determined girl, very dedicated, busy, and unwilling to settle for excuses at the expense of what she will gain from the fame of winning honours. She deserve gold, I’ll be praying. Apart for the next opponent the only other obstacle will be poor officiating and blood sample test in laboratories overseen by Nationals and systems we have no way of monitoring for bias and skulduggery. |
Security agents operating in no fewer than 15 vehicles, including an Armoured Personnel Carrier, burnt down a hotel, a residential house and about 15 shops in Orlu, Imo State, on Sunday.15 vehicles, amoured personnel Carrier, the activity of getting down, burning down 15 shops and an entire hotel, and no video evidence - at least- in spite of the fact everyone has a mobile device? And the fact that Nigerians are always on the lookout for something to upload on Youtube? |
Minor observation on the probable psychology of the Nigerians athletes: Tobi and Blessing had angry faces -angry unpleasant faces is not normally a Nigerian thing unlike on many African people faces. Naturally pleasant looking faces are one of the ways I am able to tell a Nigerian apart from other Africans. We don’t carry swollen, dirty looking faces in spite of our difficulties and maybe it was because we didn’t use to carry vindictive mindsets, I don’t know. Tobi was pleasant looking in Australia commonwealth games. Anger is not the same thing as determination and if anyone is advising Nigerian athlete to look angry, they most desists at once. Anger saps energy (in sports). A warrior’s Berserker Rage or drug induced rage are different types of anger. Pride – whether it be racial, ethnic, National, class etc- is a more useful psychological tool in sports than anger. |
lolu2019:Ones again lack of organisation: employers in Nigeria have no access to data bases, Nigeria keeps no record, a candidate looking for work may be an ex-convict, ritualist, paedophile, psychopath and there’d be no means of knowing this history. Even psychological assessment by trained analysts attached to police station does not exist. Police stations themselves are deplorable. The harder the times the more necessary psychological profiling capabilities are. No national or even state level genetic records. No Forensics industry. No fit mortuaries. Nigeria has so much basic work to do to build a nation that resorting to tribalistc name calling and catch phrases such as brake up the nation is premature. Learn to walk first before complaining you can’t run and need new legs. |
Femeto:Exactly. After two weeks, everything is forgotten. This happens because no one takes clear charge, sets goals and expects to be held responsible for success or failure. Right now we all have just vague notions of who or what to hold accountable. Is it the sports minister? is there a sports minister? Is it the president? Is there a president? Are states ministers responsible? home athletes? Or athletes’ abroad? Who is committed? Who isn’t committed? What are schools doing? Do we have people attached to organisation responsible for checking doping? On and on. In these absences of Responsibility-taking, this lack of organisation, the public express commonsense ideas or superimposed political views and sentiments as explanations. |
Beancounter94:We require talent + training + facilities + variety + organisation + time in order to do ourselves justice in any global sports competition. We currently rely on talent alone. Nationally we require maintenance and legacy mind frames that leads to enduring institutions, which should save us money long term. |
paulolee:Is Olympic medal and it's associated fame and commercial gains not enough motivation? |
Artificial intelligence in structural biology is here to stay Machine learning will transform our understanding of protein folding. And it’s essential that all data be open. The AlphaFold machine-learning tool can predict 3D structures of full protein chains for 98% of human proteinsCredit: Karen Arnott/EMBL-EBI “I didn’t think we would get to this point in my lifetime.” That’s how one research leader in structural biology responded to last week’s publication of research in which artificial intelligence (AI) was used to predict the structure of more than 20,000 human proteins, as well as that of nearly all the known proteins produced by 20 model organisms such as Escherichia coli, fruit flies and yeast, but also soya bean and Asian rice. That is a combined total of around 365,000 predictions1. The data, publicly accessible for the first time (see https://alphafold.ebi.ac.uk), were released online on 22 July by researchers at DeepMind, a London-based AI company owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and the European Bioinformatics Institute, based at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EBI-EMBL) near Cambridge, UK. The DeepMind team developed a machine-learning tool called AlphaFold. The team trained this program on DNA sequences, including their evolutionary history, and the already-known shapes of tens of the thousands of proteins contained in a public-access database of proteins hosted by the EBI-EMBL researchers. A week earlier, DeepMind also released the source code for AlphaFold and detailed how it was constructed2, at the same time that researchers from the University of Washington, Seattle, published details of another protein-structure prediction program — inspired by AlphaFold — called RoseTTAFold3. The unveiling of this catalogue of predicted structures would not be nearly such good news were the data and the methodology not open and freely available. Structural biologists and other researchers are already starting to use AlphaFold to obtain more-accurate models for proteins that have been difficult or impossible to characterize by current experimental methods. Speeding up structure prediction Predicting the 3D shape that proteins fold into has been one of biology’s unsolved ‘grand challenges’ since the discovery in 1953 of the structure of DNA itself. Before AI, structure prediction from sequence was an intensely time-consuming, not to say labour-intensive, process with little guarantee of getting an accurate result. The new data will still need to be validated and experimentally verified. But the AI tools can accurately predict protein structures in minutes to hours — compared with the months, or years, that it used to take to determine the structure of just one or two proteins. And that opens up possibilities for applications, for example in the engineering of enzymes to break down environmental pollutants such as microplastics. Last week’s breakthrough depended not just on the sharing of open data, but on advances in fundamental science and technology. Since the 1960s, structural biologists have worked on parallel approaches to understanding the science of protein folding. One involves piecing together the structures of proteins by understanding the underlying physical forces. Another attempts to predict the shapes by making comparisons with closely related proteins, using an organism’s evolutionary history. And then there’s been the all-important role of imaging technologies, starting with X-ray crystallography and now cryo-electron microscopy. In the basic science of structural biology, key problems remain to be solved. Although AI in science and technology is good at producing accurate results, it doesn’t (at least for now) explain how, or why, those results happened. The teams at DeepMind, EBI-EMBL, the University of Washington and elsewhere should be congratulated for crucial breakthroughs. But there is still work to be done to unlock the science — the essential biology, chemistry and physics — of how and why proteins fold. Public and private In terms of significance, some are comparing the latest advances to the first draft human genome sequence 20 years ago. And it’s true that there are comparisons to be made. Both the Human Genome Project and DeepMind’s catalogue of human protein-structure predictions equip their fields with a tool that is set to markedly accelerate discovery. The human genome’s first draft was the result of a race. Solving protein folding has also benefited from a kind of competition — an annual event called the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (or CASP), which has been essential to getting a result https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02037-0 |
A Los Angeles company has created phone booth-sized machines to beam live holograms into your living room. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MG7rwKbhCs The device made by PORTL Inc lets users talk in real time with a life-sized hologram of another person. The machines also can be equipped with technology to enable interaction with recorded holograms of historical figures or relatives who have passed away. Each PORTL device is seven feet (2.1m) tall, five feet (1.5m) wide and two feet (0.6m) deep, and can be plugged into a standard wall outlet. Anyone with a camera and a white background can send a hologram to the machine in what Chief Executive David Nussbaum calls "holoportation." "We say if you can't be there, you can beam there," said Nussbaum, who previously worked at a company that developed a hologram of Ronald Reagan for the former president's library and digitally resurrected rapper Tupac Shakur. "We are able to connect military families that haven't seen each other in months, people from opposite coasts," or anyone who is social distancing to fight the coronavirus, Nussbaum added. Prices for the machine start at $60,000, a cost that Nussbaum expects will drop over the next three to five years. The company also plans a smaller tabletop device with a lower price tag early next year. The devices can be equipped with artificial intelligence technology from Los Angeles-based company StoryFile to produce hologram recordings that can be archived. Adding that to the current device brings the cost to at least $85,000. The companies are promoting to museums, which could let visitors question a hologram of a historical figure, and to families to record information for future generations https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tech-hologram-idUSKCN2531D5 |
Listen carefully and you'll hear it in echoes from the future, the people in South crying in protests, "free the Ugbafor Rapists Gang now, the courts in the North frees bandits, why not us?'. |
Bad idea that will lead to, 'jail Igbo we go jail hausa; you free Yoruba, we go free Fulani', judiciary and only infamous thieves, crooked politicians, bandits and militants will be the winners. |
In the Finals, ADEGOKE Enoch apparently did not finish. Italy won. |

bjtinz:In Nigeria no evidence is good news |
Actually poster mountmoriah’s post has made me sad with wishful thinking of the wonderful place Nigeria could become if only half the population could leave Nigeria. |
mountmoriah:If this could only happen, Nigeria would be great overnight. Huge parts of West Africa’s riff-raff are currently in Nigeria, which is why many West African nations are beginning to look, light, breezy and clean for their rubbish litter Nigeria. Fulanis from all over West Africa are in Nigeria, same with folks from Togo, Benin Republic, Liberia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Niger and Chad. There are loads of Congolese too. If all of these people, in addition to roughly 30 million rubbish Nigerians, would only but leave Nigeria, Nigeria would be among the top ten most progressive Nations in the world, and rank top ten in quality of life. Life in Nigeria sweet die for the wealthy, middleclass and hard working Nigerians that trade or run business. These people love Nigeria and live in Nigeria but, oh god, how happy Nigeria would be if only millions of the nasty, moaning ones leave the country and never return. |
bidexiii:Lol, I once suggested this type of craft. I have a feeling that relevantly designed ones for the theatre, perhaps like the Delta creeks and mangrove areas, will prove very useful, even formidable. |
I find it difficult to believe Blessing would take drugs. Something fishy is going on. Are Indians in charge of lab based drug testing for this Olympics? What has she to say for herself, has anyone interviewed her ? |
sunshineV:Oh, of course, nothing concern you. |
sunshineV:It's this sort of comments that emboldened the outside world to pick on Nigerians. If people create this attitude that Nigerians are all criminals and unscrupulous people, for instance, spike Nigerian athletes food out there and later the Nigeria athlete protests that she took no drugs, no one will believe, the world will just say, 'oh it's those Nigerians, they always cheat'. |
He deserves being considered an idiot since he was exploiting the athletes for personal gain. He wanted to gain International Likes at the expense of the girls. If he did not, he might have considered, ‘what if the Athletes had their own protest plans?’ |
Op you cannot redeem the Daft Bus Guy, the panellists in the vid didn’t support his action and even the cardboard Placard carried by some of the protesting athletes declares, “All We wanted to Do is Compete” another, “why should we suffer because of someone else’s negligence” and “ We are not just alternates but potential medallists” . So where in all this does it seems that the Athletes would be better off boycotting the games than competing? They trained hard, dedicated huge parts of their lives in the hope of competing in the Olympics and then some cowardly Twit steps on a bus and verbally harasses term for his own political views (remember many voted and support Buhari). He wanted them to do what he should do himself. In the end, administrative incompetence deprived the athletes of the opportunity their hard work deserved. |
