Programming › Re: Principles Of Great Coding by logica(m): 12:04pm On Feb 04, 2009
i really think comments are a bit outdated as the use of sensible variable names can now be used mostly. we no longer have those languages that limit the length of a name to a few characters. and if u r a beginner in the field, u have no business reading /handling complex code, therefore u wouldn't expect me 2 explain using comments, basic ideas like looping or setting variables.

they are not copies. for instance Clippy is only activated when in edit mode, while CopierciN allows you to "copy" read-only.

In your head think of the data structure "Error" as "ErrorReport" (error is different from error report of course, as error report can make sense as "no error") and keep it moving. You are still talking semantics.
Programming › Re: Error: No Error by logica(m): 8:36am On Jan 19, 2009
U r 2 busy thinking about semantics while the writer was busy thinking about code reuse. If he was to create a data structure for "Success", it would be way too similar to the "Failure" or "Error" structure. He therefore decided to merge both into one. He could have decided to call the structure "SuccessOrFailure" or "ErrorOrNoError" but the name doesn't make a difference. He understands what he's trying to do, and the name does not affect the structure in any way.

simply means u will always have an error associated with any response. and in the case where there is no error, rather than return "null", an instance that says "all is well" is created. what's the biggie?

create a script that runs after the db is installed. u can usually do this by exporting the db schema. the script usually has a ".SQL" extension.

"We're told that the OS is based on Linux, and is in some way an extension of what they've been crafting for a while now, but on top of that Linux core is a display layer that is basically WebKit"

hmmm. they've all seen the light.

"The device features copy and paste, which is implemented by holding a thumb on the gesture area and grabbing the text you want with your other thumb or a finger -- there's also a dropdown menu that lets your move through a number of editing options."

wow. exactly as i suggested that the iphone copy-n-paste feature should be implemented while chatting on the #iphone IRC.

apparently the security model has been updated after much criticism. it now actually looks more like the model in Android (this is quite obvious). there was no need 4 any serious demonstration 2 show that any malicious code that gets a hold of the "mobile" profile can wreak havoc on all installed apps, as they all shared this profile.
Phones › Re: The Apple iPhone Thread by logica(m): 1:34pm On Jan 07, 2009
Hopefully, the security model has changed radically from what I read here in these articles:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/24/omtp_security/

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2007/oct/25/researchersattackiphonessec

http://cultofmac.com/confiormed-iphones-security-better-but-still-not-perfect/1791

I have posted the articles in order of improvement of the security model.

They changed the model by having apps run using the "mobile" privilege (that was the user id I was trying to remember earlier), but this still isn't a sandbox, as a rogue application that takes hold of the "mobile" id will equally be able to do damage to all apps.

Now, I'm not sure if there is a newer model that the last 1 I posted.

Ex Inferis,

my guy, this is the most important phrase in ur post: "most apps with running daemons require root".
Phones › Re: The Apple iPhone Thread by logica(m): 2:28pm On Jan 05, 2009
@naijafan
indeed, there are some 3rd party apps back in 1.1.1 that i remember didn't use root privileges, but rather used something like "mobileuser"; not sure of the exact name. but the fact that an app can run using root privilege at all violates a sandbox model. that's the point i'm making.
Phones › Re: The Apple iPhone Thread by logica(m): 9:59am On Jan 05, 2009
@naijafan

The iPhone OS model cannot be called a sandbox model if applications require root access to run.
Phones › Re: The Apple iPhone Thread by logica(m): 12:24pm On Jan 03, 2009
my guy, why this cyclic argument?  grin

In sum, jailbreaking is not just to install 3rd party apps, it's to also allow tools and code have root privileges in order to allow foreign code and mods like winterboard.

what's the difference between "3rd party apps" and "tools and code"?

Naijafan:

You can receive SMS Delivery Notification by affixing the code "*N#" to the SMS message. Example, the message "Testing delivery notification" will be sent as "*N# Testing delivery notification". This works for most networks (I can verify Etisalat as I have not tried the rest), as the code is dependent on the network of the SMS recipient. You can check online for more on the code.
Phones › Re: The Apple iPhone Thread by logica(m): 9:46am On Jan 03, 2009
The purpose of jailbreaking on the iPhone OS is mainly to install 3rd Party apps. The security model of Android is different from iPhone OS, that's why u may not need to jailbreak Android to install 3rd Party apps. If i remember correctly, an app in Android runs in its own sandbox, independent of other apps, and with user privileges all of its own. On the other hand, for an app to run in iPhone OS, root privileges are required.

if u want 2 upgrade ur 3g to 2.2 and still be able 2 unlock, check this link:

This is one of the reasons why we don't yet have the famous Minority Report information interface. In that movie, Tom Cruise donned special gloves to interact with an awesome PC interface where you literally grab windows and toss them around the screen. But that interface is impractical without the proper feedback—without actually being able to feel where the edges of the windows are.

Shows how little you know.

watch the vids below:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/11/minority-report-like-interface-gets-demoed-at-cebit/
http://oblong.com/

"Some of the SOE's core ideas are already familiar from the film Minority Report, whose characters performed forensic analysis using massive, gesturally driven displays. The similarity is no coincidence: one of Oblong's founders served as science advisor to Minority Report and based the design of those scenes directly on his earlier work at MIT."

Concepts in Sci-Fi movies are usually based on real-life works-in-progress, in case you didn't know.

i don't know y people r talking about the appointments as if they are mandatory. if you are nominated for an appointment that you don't feel you are suitable for, you simply turn it down. that, i believe is what dora (nafdac boss) should have done. but in naija, as long as u r made a leader of a ministry u r not meant 4, even ur family people will ask if u have gone mad 4 turning it down. they expect u 2 take it, so that u can feed fat.

truth is, microsoft did something similar when they had to go bring back a unix guru (can't remember his name) from retirement to develop the kernel for windows nt.
