EducationLearn Math In English From Scratch: A Math Resources For O'level & Undergrad Std by Lukgaf(op):
Without doubts, one of the subjects students really find challenging in our schools (from basic to grad schools) is Mathematics. Even though Mathematics is one of the core subjects in our basic and high schools, many students still fail it. For example, about 45 percent of the candidates who sat for the 2021 WASSCE failed Mathematics and about 70 percent in 2020. This is also true for other terminal examinations. Very disheartening!

One of the reasons is the way some mathematics topics are being taught in our schools. Another reason is the use of complex terms to explain the concepts. Also, there are inadequate mathematics resources in our schools and the available ones are handled by incompetent mathematics teachers. Some schools have no mathematics teachers at all and thus rely on other subject teachers to teach this "core" subject. Haven't you seen a school where a Yoruba teacher or a teacher with an art and humanities background is being compelled to teach mathematics? This is so unfortunate!

So, fellow Nairalanders, while surfing the internet recently, I came across some resources online with hundreds of math videos that students (even those with zero math background) can use to learn this tough subject from scratch with ease. I can vouch that our brothers and sisters (or children) preparing for terminal exams such as WAEC, NECO, JAMB, NABTEB, and even first-year students would find them useful.

Below excerpt is the transcript of what the instructor said at the beginning of the videos:

"I have taught in many schools across Africa and across different levels (from primary to graduate level). I have informally started teaching mathematics right from my childhood when I taught and assisted my siblings with mathematics home works. I am particularly interested in starting this online class to assist students to clear some misconceptions some students have about mathematics. With the help of God Almighty, I have changed the narrative of many students who had a misconception about Mathematics in the past. I hope through this series you can also clear some of these misconceptions. Before I proceed, let me ask you: do you know can excel in math and have an excellent grade in your math exam? do you know you can become a Guru in math? That is possible! for example, let me ask you a mathematics question: what is 1 + 1 ? Guess, 2? waooh! clap for yourself! Tre tre bien! Mathematics is as simple as that (1+1). So sit down and enjoy learning Math from scratch!"

IslamKeeping Company With People/friends Engaging In Haram (unlawful) Things by Lukgaf(op): 8:29am On Feb 18, 2022
Are you keeping company with people/friends who engage in unlawful things? A yahoo yahoo? Ritualist? Drunkard? Thieves? Adultery? Corrupt individuals? See why you should stay away with such friends and keep company with pious friends

Praise be to Allah.

Firstly:

Sincere friendship is something that is required according to Islamic teachings. The Muslim should be very keen to have good friends, because that is one of the means of being safe from troubles and temptations.

It was narrated from Abu Sa‘eed al-Khudri, that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Do not keep company with anyone but a believer and do not let anyone eat your food but one who is pious.” Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (2395) and Abu Dawood (4832); classed as hasan by al-Albaani.

This refers to inviting people to a meal, not when you feed people because they are needy, because Allah, may He be glorified, says (interpretation of the meaning): {And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive} [al-Insaan 76:8]. It is well known that their captives were disbelievers, and were neither believers nor pious people.

Rather we are warned against keeping company with anyone who is not pious, and we are discouraged from mixing with them and eating with them, because eating together instills affection and fondness in the heart. What we may understand from the hadith is: Do not befriend anyone who is not pious, and do not take him as a companion with whom you eat and converse. "Ma‘aalim as-Sunan (4/115)".

It was narrated from Abu Moosa al-Ash‘ari that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The likeness of a good companion and a bad companion is that of one who carries musk and one who works the bellows. With the carrier of musk, either he will give you some or you will buy some from him, or you will notice a good smell from him; as for the one who works the bellows, either he will burn your clothes or you will notice a bad smell from him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5534) and Muslim (2628).

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

This highlights the virtue of sitting with the righteous and good and decent people, those who have good manners and good attitudes, who are pious, knowledgeable and polite. And it indicates that it is not allowed to sit with evil people, those who follow innovation, and those who backbite people or who are foul-mouthed and timewasters, and other blameworthy types. "Sharh Saheeh Muslim (16/178)".

Hence you should try hard to find righteous company to live with, whenever you are able to do that.

Secondly:

If you cannot find any place to live except the place where you are now, there is no blame on you for living with them, if you fear Allah, may He be exalted. That means not sitting with them when they do objectionable things, and if you see them do anything of that nature, you should tell them not to do it and remind them.

Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

{And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.

And those who fear Allah are not held accountable for the disbelievers at all, but [only for] a reminder - that perhaps they will fear Him} [al-An‘aam 6:68-69].

Shaykh as-Sa ‘di (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

This prohibition applies to the one who sits with them and does not act in accordance with Islamic teachings, such as if he joins them in their unlawful actions and deeds, or he keeps quiet and does not denounce the evildoing. But if he does adhere to Islamic teachings by enjoining them to do good and forbidding them to do evil or to say the evil words that they utter, and that results in putting an end to the evil or reducing it, then there is no blame or sin on him in that case. Hence Allah says: {Those who fear Allah are in no way accountable for them. However, it is (their duty) to admonish them, so that they may desist from their mockery} that is, rather let him remind them and admonish them, so that they may fear Allah and desist. "Tafseer as-Sa‘di (p. 260)".

But what is the ruling if they do not respond to your advice?

In that case, you should continue to remind them every time you see a suitable opportunity to do so, but do not do that too often, so that they will not get fed up of you and dislike speaking to you.

You should also offer a great deal of supplication, asking that they be guided.

If you do that, you will have done what is required of you, and there will be no sin on you.

Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

{And when a community among them said, “Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allah is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?” they [the advisors] said, “To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him.”

And when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying} [al-A‘raaf 7:164-165].

But if they continue as they are, then do not sit with them for very long, only as much as is needed, then spend the rest of your day doing beneficial things such as studying and revising in your university and its library, because this is the purpose for which you have travelled there, then you can go home to rest only.

And Allah knows best.

IslamThe Most Noble In The Sight Of Allah Is The Most Of Righteous. Be Humble! (pics) by Lukgaf(op): 8:05am On Feb 18, 2022
From the image below, can you recognize a white/black race?
A male?
Female?
Who is beautiful/handsome or ugly?
Who speaks Yoruba? Hausa? Igbo?
President? Rich? Poor?
Professor? Students?

It doesn't matter your status in society, ethnicity, language you speak, whether you are beautiful or ugly, rather how pious you are. Allah says in Suratul Hujroot verse 13.

O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

Be humble and increase in piety!

IslamIs Fasting In The Month Of Rajab Recommended? Like 27th Of Rajab? by Lukgaf(op): 7:43am On Feb 18, 2022
Do you know Rajab is one of the four sacred months we have in Islam?

How about fasting in it?

Is fasting recommended?

Below from IslamQA, I present some issues concerning the sacred month of Rajab and whether it is recommended to fast some of its days.

Rajab: A sacred month
The month of Rajab is one of the sacred months of which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

What are the sacred months?

The sacred months are: Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and al-Muharram.

Al-Bukhari (4662) and Muslim (1679) narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and al-Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha’ban.

Why are the sacred months given this name?

These months are called sacred for two reasons:

Because fighting therein is forbidden unless initiated by the enemy
Because transgression of the sacred limits therein is worse than at other times.
Hence Allah has forbidden us to commit sins during these months, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Wrong not yourselves therein.” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

Although committing sins is haram and forbidden during these months and at other times, in these months it is more forbidden.

Al-Sa’di (may Allah have mercy on him) said (p. 373):

In the phrase “wrong not yourselves therein”, the pronoun may be understood as referring to twelve months. Allah states that He has made them a measure of time for His slaves, which they may use for worshipping Him, and thank Allah for His blessings, and they serve the interests of His slaves, so beware of wronging yourselves therein.

The pronoun may also be understood as referring to the four sacred months, and this forbids them to wrong themselves in those months in particular, as well as it being forbidden to do wrong at all times, because it is more forbidden at this time, but it is worse at this time than at others. End quote.

Any hadith about fasting in Rajab?
With regard to fasting in the month of Rajab, there is no sahih hadith to indicate that there is any special virtue in fasting all or part of this month.

What some people do, singling out some days of Rajab for fasting, believing that they are better than others, has no basis in shari’ah.

But there is a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which indicates that it is mustahabb to fast during the sacred months (and Rajab is one of the sacred months).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Fast some days of the sacred months and not others.” Narrated by Abu Dawud, 2428; classed as da’if by al-Albani in Da’if Abi Dawud.

Even if this hadith were sahih, it indicates that it is mustahabb to fast during the sacred months. So if a person fasts during Rajab because of this, and he also fasts in the other sacred months, there is nothing wrong with that. But singling out Rajab for fasting is not right.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Majmu’ al-Fatawa (25/290):

“As for fasting in Rajab in particular, the ahadith concerning that are all da’if (weak), and in fact mawdu’ (fabricated). The scholars do not rely on any of them. They are not among the da’if ahadith which have been narrated concerning virtues, rather most of them are fabricated and false. In al-Musnad and elsewhere there is a hadith which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enjoined fasting the sacred months, namely Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram, but this has to do with fasting during all of them, not just Rajab.”

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“Every hadith which mentions fasting in Rajab and praying during some of its nights is false and fabricated.” (Al-Manar al-Munif, p. 96)

Al-Hafiz ibn Hajar said in Tabyin al-‘Ajab (p. 11)

“There is no sahih hadith that would count as evidence which speaks of the virtue of the month of Rajab, or that speaks of fasting this month or part of it, or of spending any particular night of it in prayer.”

Shaykh Sayyid Sabiq (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Fiqh al-Sunnah (1/282):

“Fasting in Rajab is no better than fasting in any other month, except that it is one of the sacred months. There is no report in the sahih Sunnah to suggest that there is anything special about fasting in this month. Whatever has been narrated concerning that is not fit to be quoted as evidence.”

Fasting on 27 th Rajab: Any merits?
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab and spending that night in prayer. He replied:

“Fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab and spending that night in prayer is a bid’ah (innovation), and every bid’ah is a going astray.” (Majmu’ Fatawa Ibn ‘Uthaymin, 20/440)

IslamIs It Permissible For A Menstruating Woman To Hold A Mus'haf? by Lukgaf(op):
Praise be to Allaah

It is permissible for a menstruating woman to recite Qur’aan according to the more correct scholarly opinion, especially if she needs to do that for fear of forgetting (what she had memorised), or to study for a test, or to seek healing thereby, on condition that she does not touch the Mus'haf (A Qur'an with Arabic text only), because no one should touch it except one who is in a state of purity.

If she needs to read from the Mus'haf, she may touch it with a barrier, such as a piece of clean cloth or a handkerchief or gloves and the like.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is obvious that women used to menstruate at the time of the Messenger of Allah (SalAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and he did not forbid them to recite Qur’aan.

He also did not forbid them to recite dhikr (remembrance of Allah) or du‘a (supplication). In fact he instructed the menstruating women to go out on the day of Eid and recite takbeer with the Muslims. End quote.

Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa, 21/460

He also said:

There is no Sunnah at all forbidding (the menstruating woman) to recite Qur’aan. Women used to menstruate at the time of the Messenger of Allah {SalAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam}, and if reciting was haraam for them, as prayer is, then this would have been one of the things that the Prophet {SalAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam} forbade to his ummah, and the Mothers of the Believers would have known of it, and it would have been one of the things that they transmitted to the people.

Based on that, there is nothing wrong with the menstruating woman memorize or performing ruqyah for herself by reciting Qur’aan, du‘aa’s and dhikr that are prescribed in Islam. There is also nothing wrong with her reciting from the Mus'haf, on condition that she does not touch the Mus'haf except with a barrier.

The mobile phones in which Qur’aan is put in written or recorded form do not come under the same ruling as the Mus'haf, so it is permissible to touch them without having purified oneself and it is permissible to take them into the washroom with one, because writing Qur’aan on the mobile phone is not like writing it in a Mus'haf. It takes the form of waves that appear and disappear, and its letters are not fixed, and the mobile phone may contain Qur’aan and other things.

Reading Qur’aan on a mobile phone makes it easy for women who are menstruating and one who cannot easily carry a Mus'haf with him, or one who is in a place where it is difficult for him to do wudoo’, because it is not essential for the one who touches it to be in a state of purity, as mentioned above.

And Allah knows best.

IslamWhy A Muslim Should Not Celebrate Valentine? by Lukgaf(op): 8:31am On Feb 11, 2022
What is Valentine?

Valentine’s Day is a jaahili Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christian. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE. Some non-Muslims (including some Muslims) still celebrate this festival, during which immorality and evil are practised widely. Ina Lilah was ina ilae rojiun!

Listen, as a Muslim reading this, it is not permissible for a Muslim to celebrate any of the festivals of the kuffaar, because festivals come under the heading of shar’i issues which are to be based on the sound texts.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Festivals are part of sharee’ah, clear way and rituals of which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way”

[Al-Quran al-Maa’idah 5:48]

In essence, Muslims should not do any of their rituals at the time of their festivals; rather the day of their festival should be like any other day for the Muslims. The Muslims should not do anything specific in imitation of them. ( Majmoo al-Fataawa (25/329). )

Also, many scholars have issued fatawah stating that it is haraam to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Among them is our noble Sheikh:

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) who was asked:

In recent times the celebration of Valentine’s Day has become widespread, especially among female students. It is a Christian festival where people dress completely in red, including clothes and shoes, and they exchange red flowers. We hope that you can explain the ruling on celebrating this festival, and what your advice is to Muslims with regard to such matters; may Allaah bless you and take care of you.

He replied:

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons.

1- It is an innovated festival for which there is no basis in Islam.

2- It promotes love and infatuation.

3- It calls for hearts to be preoccupied with foolish matters that are contrary to the way of the righteous salaf (may Allaah be pleased with them).

It is not permissible on this day to do any of the things that are characteristic of this festival, whether that has to do with food, drinks, clothing, exchanging gifts or anything else.

The Muslim should be proud of his religion and should not be a weak character who follows every Tom, Dick and Harry. I ask Allaah to protect the Muslims from all temptations, visible and invisible, and to protect us and guide us.

End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (16/199)

Say no to Valentine!

IslamLess Than 50 Days To Ramadan: Plant Seeds During This Month Of Rajab! by Lukgaf(op): 8:15am On Feb 11, 2022
According to the counting of Sultan, today is the 9th day of Rajab 1434AH.

It was traced to the early generations (salaf) that the month of Rajab is the month of planting the seeds. Which seeds are we expected to plant? On this thread, you are going to understand the type of seeds as adapted from IslamQA

The month of Rajab is one of the sacred months concerning which Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

{Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him]} [at-Tawbah 9:36].

The sacred months are: Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa‘dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram.

Al-Bukhaari (4662) and Muslim (1679) narrated from Abu Bakrah, that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Time has returned to its original order as it was on the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu’l-Qa‘dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar, which comes between Jumaada and Sha‘baan.”.

These months are called sacred for two reasons:

1.. Because of the prohibition on fighting during them, unless the enemy starts it.

2.. Because transgressing the sacred limits during them is more grievous than at other times.

Hence Allah, may He be exalted, forbade us to commit sin during these months, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): {so do not wrong yourselves during them} [at-Tawbah 9:36]. Although committing sin is forbidden and prohibited during these months and others, in these months it is more emphatically prohibited.

As-Sa‘di said in his Tafseer:

{so do not wrong yourselves during them} It may be that the pronoun (them) refers to the twelve months, and Allah (st) stated that He has made them a means of measuring time, so time should be filled with acts of obedience and thanks should be given to Allah (st) for this blessing and His making the months a means of serving people’s interests, so let them beware of wronging themselves during these (twelve) months;

Or it may be that the pronoun refers to the four sacred months, and that this is a prohibition on wronging themselves during them, especially when this prohibition applies at all times, because these months are extra special and wrongdoing at that time is more serious than at other times. End quote.

Secondly: the month of Rajab marks the beginning of preparations for Ramadan
The scholars likened the year, and what it contains of special seasons and occasions to several things. The greatest of its special seasons is the month of Ramadan, hence Islam urges us to do more righteous deeds during that month.

One of the most important things is to prepare for doing righteous deeds before the month of Ramadan. The scholars designated the month of Rajab as the start of the preparations for the month of Ramadan. It is as if the year is a tree; its leaves begin to appear in the month of Rajab, its fruit begins to appear in the month of Sha‘baan, and the people pick its fruit during the month of Ramadan.

So the individual should prepare himself by doing righteous deeds in Rajab, and pay extra attention to making them perfect in Sha‘baan, so that he will be able to do them in a perfect manner in Ramadan.

The scholars refer to this idea in several ways, including the following:

it was said that Rajab is for a person to stop drifting away, Sha‘baan is for striving and sincerity, and Ramadan is for truthfulness and purity.

Rajab is the month of repentance, Sha‘baan is the month of love, and Ramadan is the month of closeness to Allah.

Rajab is the month of sanctity, Sha‘baan is the month of service, and Ramadan is the month of blessing.

Rajab is the month of worship, Sha‘baan is the month of turning away from this world, and Ramadan is the month of increase.

Rajab is the month in which Allah multiplies the reward of good deeds, Sha‘baan is the month of expiating bad deeds, and Ramadan is the month of waiting for gifts and honours.

Rajab is the month of those who are excelling, Sha‘baan is the month of those whose progress is moderate, and Ramadan is the month of the sinners [in which they can mend their ways].

Dhu’n-Noon al-Masri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Rajab is the month for giving up sins, Sha‘baan is the month for doing acts of obedience, and Ramadan is the month for waiting for gifts and honours. So whoever does not give up sins, and does not do acts of obedience, and does not wait for gifts and honours, is one of the people whose main focus is trivial matters.

He (may Allah have mercy on him) also said: Rajab is the month of planting, Sha‘baan is the month of irrigating, and Ramadan is the month of harvesting. Everyone will reap what he sowed, and will be requited for what he did, so the one who neglects his crops will feel regret on the day of harvest, and he will not get what he was expecting.

One of the righteous said: The year is a tree, Rajab is the time when its leaves appear, Sha‘baan is the time when its fruit appears, and Ramadan is the time when the fruit is picked. End quote from al-Ghaniyyah by al-Jeelaani (1/326).

Ibn Rajab said in Lataa’if al-Ma‘aarif (121): The month of Rajab is the key to the months of goodness and blessing.

Abu Bakr al-Warraaq al-Balkhi said: The month of Rajab is a month for sowing, the month of Sha‘baan is a month for irrigating the crop, and Ramadan is a month for harvesting the crop.

And it was narrated that he said: The likeness of the month of Rajab is that of the wind, the likeness of Sha‘baan is that of a cloud, and the likeness of Ramadan is that of the rain.

One of them said: The year is like a tree; the month of Rajab is the time when its leaves appear, Sha‘baan is the time when its fruits appear, and Ramadan is the time when its fruits are picked; the believers are the ones who pick the fruit.

It is appropriate for the one whose page has been darkened with sin to brighten it by repenting during this month, and for the one who has wasted his life in idleness to make the most of what remains of his life.

So brighten your dark page in Rajab with righteous deeds that will save you from the flames.

One of the sacred months has come, so the one who calls upon Allah will not be disappointed.

Glad tidings to the one who does a sincere righteous deed in this month, and gives up obscenity and dubious matters during it.

Making the most of this opportunity by striving during this month is gain, and making the most of its time by doing acts of worship and obedience is immense virtue. End quote.

So the individual should sow a lot of good seeds and do a lot of righteous deeds. These are the seeds that he should plant during his lifetime, hoping for the day of harvest when he meets the Lord of the Worlds with a crop of good deeds.

Among the most important things that a person may do in Ramadan are:

1.. Prayer, both obligatory and supererogatory (naafil) prayers, especially qiyaam al-layl (voluntary prayers at night).

2.. Fasting.

3.. Charity.

4.. Reading Qur’an.

5.. Dhikr.

Adh-Dhahabi said: By Allah, reciting one seventh of the Qur’aan in tahajjud as qiyaam al-layl, along with consistently offering the regular Sunnah prayers, praying Duha and the prayer to “greet the mosque” (tahiyyat al-masjid); as well as reciting the soundly narrated adhkaar, the du‘aa’s for going to sleep and waking up, the adhkaar to be recited following the obligatory prayers and in the time before dawn; studying beneficial knowledge and focusing on it sincerely for the sake of Allah; enjoining what is right, guiding and teaching one who is ignorant, rebuking one who is an evildoer, and so on; offering the obligatory prayers in congregation with focus, tranquillity, humility and faith; doing all obligatory duties and avoiding major sins; offering a great deal of supplication and prayers for forgiveness; giving charity and upholding ties of kinship; and showing humility and sincerity in all of that is an immense task, and it is the way of those on the right, the pious close friends of Allah.

Siyar A‘laam an-Nubala’ (3/84).

And Allah knows best.

IslamNigeria’s Constitution Allows Muslim Women To Wear Hijab – FG by Lukgaf(op): 11:52am On Feb 08, 2022
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, says Nigeria’s constitution allows Muslim women to wear hijab in line with the teachings of their faith.

He noted that all citizens are allowed to practise their religions as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people.

He spoke at the National Mosque, Abuja, at a public lecture organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women as part of activities marking this year’s World Hijab Day.

Adamu, represented by Hajiya Sidikat Shomope of the Social Mobilisation Department, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), said it was unfortunate that the controversy over the wearing of hijab in the country had gone down to the school level and generated needless clashes.

There was violence on Thursday at the Baptist High School, Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government of Kwara State, leading to the killing of Habeeb Idris, a Muslim student of the school, when a rally by the Muslim students was reportedly disrupted by hoodlums and security agents.

The minister said: “The wearing of hijab by Muslim women is a Sunna as recommended in the Holy Qur’an (Q 33 V 59).”

According to him, there is a lot the country can gain by dialoguing on matters of religious differences rather than resort to violence.

“Our children will remain citizens of Nigeria irrespective of their faith. They will live and interact in the world outside school where no boundary exists between the religions.

“We should understand that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion to all citizens. This, by implication, means that all citizens are allowed to practice their religions according to the teachings of their faith as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people.”

He appealed to all traditional, religions and community leaders to use their offices to douse tension so that Nigerians could all live in peace, harmony and tolerance.

Adamu also called on parents and school teachers “to ensure that in both words and actions, they present the best model to our children to emulate.”

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aisha Duku; Hajiya Maryam Bukar Abba; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Saadatu Hassan Liman; Prof. Rafatu Abdulhamid of the University of Abuja and the FOMWAN National Ameerah, Hajiya Rafat Sanni, asked hijab-wearing Muslim women to ensure that while the hijab covers their physical appearance, the essence on their lives and behaviours are also prioritised.

The wife of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Hajiya Amina, said: “We are more determined to sensitize and promote this Islamic identity and culture without being intimidated.

Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola, who spoke on ‘The Hijab as a Metaphor of Our National Aspiration’, noted that it is the responsibility of everyone, especially government at all levels, to ensure that the rights of all female Muslims are protected to adorn hijab in public.
