Well the so called wall is natural not man made, it's the moat between the earthen walls that was created at about 800AD, the charcoals plus iron tools used to burn the trees and clear the paths I think were studied. It was basically a "digging" not a "building" . It was ordered by a queen or noble woman merchant who had her giant slaves make a path for her to pass and also as a way to keep her legacy, having no child to do that....so they say So let's assume she dug it to protect herself from bandits, and surely it was completed in her life time But I doubt if this woman had anything to do with Queen of Sheba or that "Bilikisu" was her name. I watched a video, that said some folks walked two months and couldn't complete the path |

Radoillo: Great.
Now, what the Enogie told you about Oba Ewuare's 'home EASTWARDS' may in fact contain some elements of truth in it, because I have encountered traditions from the people living east of Benin that affirm that Ewuare was a son of their daughter's. I had dismissed that tradition until you mentioned that stuff with the Enogie.
According to Agbor tradition, as recorded by Chief Iduwe in his manuscript "A History of Greater Agbor" (written in the 1970s):
"Ogun's mother was an Agbor woman betrothed to the Oba of Benin in those days of old. The woman bore a son to the Oba and received a name Ogun meaning medicine. It happened that Ogun disputed with his half brother about who was to be the heir to the Benin throne. As it were, Ogun had no helper in the dispute so his mother left the city with her son to Agbor her former town. The mother was a daughter of an Oki man of Ikpami cult in a family of the royal physician Nmuw Obonbon. [Note: Oki is one of the sections that make up Agbor.]
Her mother appealed to doctors and priests for help to her son to be the Oba of Benin. She handed Ogun to Oheren Ezuku (priest). Ogun served the priest very well as a good hunter and taught him the Ika arts and science as dibie. Hereafter, Ogun was called back to Benin to be Oba. He went and became the Oba with the title of Eware. He was grateful to his warden and offered him the Ada sword which is yet in the shrine of Ezuku Ogan as a token of gratitude to his warden."
Concerning the Ezuku Ogan and the priest who (according to Agbor traditions) mentored Ewuare for some years, let me quote another passage from Iduwe - to put things in perspective:
"The name Oghan alias Ogan signifies the den of elephants where Agbor hunters found such beasts in the wilderness close to Ohiomo river, thus the saying, "Okeme eyin, ola Oghan" meaning after work elephant retires to its den.
Tradition says hunters formed the cottage called Ogan. After some years a native doctor from Ozoigbon Ubulu-Uku by name Eze Uku came there on Mbian business, i.e., as a herbalist. After some years of toil he died without anybody to inherit his things or manage his medicine with sacrifices but at long last his medicine for lack of sacrifices pestilence began to harm the inhabitants of the village so they went and reported the cause and effect to Eze Agbor [i.e., the Obi/Dein of Agbor] who without delay contributed a sheep and money to the people for the appeasement. The medicine became a shrine called Ezuku or Eze-Uku-Ogan."
So, according to Agbor oral history, Ewuare was not only maternally descended from the Agbor people, he was also mentored by a priesthood that had Ika and Aniocha connections (The Ezuku Ogan). Taking these bits of information together with what the Enogie told you, it may begin to make sense which 'home eastwards' Ewuare was returning to --- his maternal home in Agbor where he had earlier sought refuge in his years of trouble, and where he probably felt at home.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All this talk about Ewuare and his possible connections with the regions to the east of Benin make me want to revisit a little issue that has puzzled me for a long time now, but which I have never had an occasion to discuss with anyone. It's about the possible etymological roots of the word 'Igue', as in the famous Bini Festival.
Many traditions affirm that Ewuare instituted Igue (although I know of some traditions that say Igue is older than Ewuare). If indeed Ewuare instituted Igue, then the observation/speculation I'm about to make may be something to look into, bearing in mind Ewuare's probable eastern (Ika-Aniocha) connections.
The Igue Festival in Benin appears to have a Yoruba parallel celebrated in Oyo called the Orun Festival. The parallels are striking:
1. The Orun Festival centres around the veneration of Ori ('spiritual head'). Igue festival centres around the veneration of Ehi, the Bini counterpart of Ori.
2. The Bashorun (the Alafin's chief minister) plays a central role in the Orun Festival. The Iyase ( the Oba's chief minister) plays a central role in the Igue Festival. Around 1918, Eweka II told an European Commission that, "I cannot celebrate Igue Festival without my Iyase. When you took my Iyase away, you took Igue Festival with him."
3. The Orun Festival takes place in September. The Igue Festival now takes place in December, but historically, it was celebrated in September. Bini history has it that it was Oba Akenzua who moved it to the month of December.
If these two festivals are rooted in the same concept, as seems likely from the similarities, shouldn't one also expect the names of the festivals to show some etymological cognacy?
'Orun' means sky or heaven in Yoruba. But 'sky/heaven' doesn't seem to be 'Igue' in Bini. The interesting thing here is that 'Igwe' is sky/heaven in the Igbo-speaking areas. If indeed Ewuare was maternally from Agbor, and if indeed he instituted Igue (as some traditions maintain), is it possible he gave the new festival he created a name from the language of his maternal folks and his mentor at Ogan? Ok, this is a good one. But how are the Agbor people at making brass? I remember the Portuguese report states that the Oghane sent a brass crown to the new Oba of Benin |

Radoillo: Ofo is a ritual staff of office, normally held by Chief Priests, Kings, Lineage heads, titled men.... Virtually every position of spiritual or temporal authority had an Ofo staff attached to it.
Nri-Menri can be looked at in two ways. Menri is the name that has come to be attributed to the earliest ancestor of the Nri people. (This Menri was himself a son of Eri). The 'Nri' attached in front of 'Menri' is a title, like Eze, Ozo or Oba. Hence Nri Menri or Nri-Menri.
Nri-Menri is also the name given to the Cult of the Royal Ancestors of the Nri Kings. Thus the staff of office of the headship of this Cult is called the Ofo Nri-Menri.
The Beni are one of the subgroups that make up the Nupe nation. The city of Bida is located in Beni territory. The Beni had formed a confederacy with a paramount king who was a kind of first among equals, before the coming of Tsoede. You know I asked you that question cus I thought I was on to something 1. "Ofo" in yoruba is word of power/authority ie. Blessing, curse, incantations. And I know "Ofo" (pronounced slightly differently) is related to authority 2. There are four core Nri towns. .. and "Merin" is 4 in yoruba.. Anyway now I think it's of no use |

I am sure the Portuguese helped Oba Esigie to consolidate power in Edo. Bros I'm sure the correct term is "empire" not kingdom |

To correct an erroneous statement I made earlier, Ryder didn't quite say the Ogane was a Beni-Nupe king. He only demonstrated that the Beni-Nupe confederacy is a piece in the puzzle of the Ogane's identity. Towards the end of the article, he made a fleeting indirect suggestion that it could have been the King of the Kwararafa/Jukun. Now whats the connection between Jukun and Benin? You must admit that if anyone wants to suggest such a thing, there has to be traditons of a strong relationship between Benin and the King of that place |

TOMTOM15: Touching Story. About three phones have gone missing in our room in the past five months. When we reported to the School's security, they only told us that it was a roommate that is responsible. Everyone of us in the room was waiting for the day we will catch the culprit. Last Tuesday, when we were all asleep; I think it was about 2 am, Ben woke up suddenly and his phone was gone. His phone was the most expensive of us all. When Ben woke up and couldn't find his phone, he sprang up from the bed and quickly opened his cupboard. He rummaged the contents, even removed his clothes but could still not find the phone. I was in the room when it happened; sitting and reading before I dozed off with my heading resting on my books. So when Ben couldn't find his phone, he gently shook my shoulders until I woke up. 'It has happened again', he told me. I didn't even need to ask what happened as I could see the panic and loss written in his eyes. This is the second time his phone had been stolen. So I took my phone and dialed Ben's number; just to be sure it had not been misplaced. 'Error in Connection' was what I saw on the screen of my phone. I dialed it again and it started ringing not just on my phone, but the actual ring tone of Ben's Samsung phone was faintly audible. We were both surprised when we heard the tone. I beckoned on Ben to keep quiet as he was visibly ready to 'finish' the person who took his phone. I continued dialing as we moved silently, following the direction of the ring tone. There were four bunks in the room, each with two bed spaces. Ben and I use the same bunk just beside the door and the sound was coming from the last bunk at the extreme left corner. We tiptoed, Ben and I, like Jack Baeur until we traced the sound to the top bed space on the last bunk. 'So it is John who had been stealing phones in this room'. Ben whispered to me. We shook his leg and woke him up only to find out it was not John sleeping on the mattress. Neither of us had ever seen the guy before. To make matters worse, the ringing was coming from the bag he was using as pillow. When he woke up, he looked at us strangely as if he didn't know why we were there. We opened the bag and found not just Ben's Samsung, but three other phones. 'So, you are the one who's been stealing our phones!'; Ben shouted at him. Before he could find an excuse, Ben slapped him on his left cheek and walked out looking for anything to break one or two of the guy's bones. I don't know; but there was something about the guy. So I asked him, 'Oga, what are you doing here?' 'What are you doing with Ben's phone'. He was just looking at me without saying anything, so I slapped his right cheek with my left hand. 'ANSWER ME!', I screamed at him; waking up the roommates who were around. John had obviously gone to night class to read and I assumed the other three roommates who were absent had also gone to read. The two guys remaining in the room with me and Ben came and gave their own round of slaps. The accused was now staggering when Ben came back with a long wood hard enough to kill the guy. As he raised it up, the three of us, the roommates, held his hands so he wouldn't murder the accused. Ben dropped the wood and swept his right leg against the thief's legs and he fell down. Ben had told me before that he had attended the Soldiers' recruitment training but failed the medical test. I believed him right then. I looked at the guy crumple on the floor and before Ben killed him, I decided to interview him, at least to know who he is. He was now sitting on the ground where he landed from Ben's force. 'Who are you?' I asked him again; this time gently. He was crying but it was only the tears that were coming out. It was then I realized he had not even uttered a word since it all started. Not even when he fell to the ground. 'Why are you in our room'? I asked again. 'Can you even talk?' He shook his head then. I was now confused. Why was he shaking his head? So, I asked again, 'Can't you talk?' He shook his head again. 'Wait, is it that this guy is dumb?', I asked the guys. The guy then nodded his head and pointed to his mouth and then shook his head left to right. It hit me then. The guy is dumb but not deaf. That was the first time I am seeing a case like that. My anger changed to pity immediately. 'Are you dumb?', I ashamedly asked the guy to confirm. Again, he nodded his head. 'Can you read and write?' He nodded again. 'Get me a pen and note!' I said to my roommates over my shoulder. I collected the pen and wrote on the note, 'Who are you? Explain yourself.' I was almost in tears as I read his fine handwriting, 'My name is James, I am John's elder brother. I am a student of Delta State University. I was traveling to Delta but our bus stopped for the night at Benin. So I decided to sleep with my brother till tomorrow morning. He brought me here around 12 am and went out to night class to read. He gave me the bag to keep for him. So I decided to use it as pillow so that it won't be stolen'. I held the note with the guys at my back as all of us read it. I became so weak I almost fell. 'The guy is innocent.' I needlessly announced. When we realized this, even I was ashamed of myself. Ben just stood there with the wood he almost used to hit him, looking as if he was the one who had been beaten. I am not sure, but I think I saw tears in his eyes as he realized he had just punished an innocent man. So we knelt down; Ben and I, we knelt down and clasped our hands so he will know we were really sorry. With tears in our eyes, we told him, 'We are sorry. Sorry for accusing you wrongly and beating you for it'. The dumb guy just smiled with bleeding lips from the blow I gave him. He smiled and looked into our eyes. And I could see pity in his eyes. He smiled and shook his head and then wrote in the same paper. 'It is Alright. I took the pain willingly. Please don't beat my brother anymore. I knew why you were beating me. John had always been a thief, right from home. But please don't report or beat him again'. Tears dropped from my eyes as I read his sacrifice. He deliberately allowed us beat him just so that John will be free. I lend my hand and raised him up as I used my cloth to wipe the tears from his face and blood from his lips. It was then my own tears flowed from the corners of my eyes. .. this is what Jesus did for us on the cross of calvary. kept quiet and even died so that we can be saved. He never protested his innocence but bore it all for us. He gave his life for you. What have you given for him? Return the life to Him, He's in Love with u..... Send to others by sharing.... it's high time we won more souls for Christ.. Sharap jesus was no innocent man. There cannot be true progress of a nation without genuine reconciliation, fairness, non_victimization, equality to all parties concerned. How many people are really proud to be Nigerians? How many people can die for Nigeria? What is the Nigerian dream(just like we have American dream). Who are our founding fathers....Are they men of integrity? The hard fact is that 80 years from now, the next generation will still be clamouring for break-up which goes to show that the foundation of this country is wrong.
Nigeria is not a nation because nobody is willing to die for Nigeria. Breaking this country can be a blessing in disguise for all parties. Beautiful! Nigeria is only a curse to the Nigerian people |
