Culture › Re: The Original Yoruba Word For Wife Is Aya Not Iyawo. by macof(m): 10:05pm On Feb 13, 2015 |
tpiah01: Iyawo is bride or new wife while the term Aya generally implies a woman who is not newly married.
The "new Iyawo" period generally only lasts until the "Iyawo" has children, after which she gets a more "secured" position and in the olden days, her old spot of "Iyawo" ie novice, gets occupied by the new wife in a polygamous household.
being a "novice Iyawo", btw, was not an enviable position because you do all the major labour in the household immediately the honeymoon is over and your husband starts scouting for another wife while you try to get pregnant. Sort of glorified slave/servant.
All these are generally speaking, could have different contexts. Your logic is nt so bad but the Op's story is exactly how the word "Iyawo" came to be |

What you miss about explanation of creationist is that, according to creationist "THE UNIVERSE comprises of MATTERS and ENERGY which originated from God/the product of creation but God was never a PRODUCT of matter and energy that's why God is ETERNAL.
If God's nature contains matter and energy which are the product of creation then we can ask WHO CREATED GOD?
The word "TO CREATE" find its use when God began the formation of the universe.
God didn't create Himself rather He brought the word "TO CREATE" into use, that is God begins EVERYTHING we see in the universe at a particular PERIOD. Can't u jst shut up and stop exposing your idiocy? Energy originated from God? |

Radoillo: You seem genuinely interested in understanding 'Osu'. I'll tell you what I know, based on what elderly folks told me. (Like I said the Osu system has completely disappeared from the area of Igboland I hail from).
First of all, this thing about Osu being used as blood sacrifice is pure nonsense. An Osu belonged to the gods and it was an abomination to shed Osu blood. In fact, in some places, Osu had the reputation of troublemakers, despoiling peoples' farm and such because they knew no one would dare touch them.
It is equally not true that 'discrimination' against osu began with Christianity. To understand the so-called discrimination, one has to understand how an Osu is made. An Osu was a slave owned by a god. As a property of the gods, Osu did hold a powerful place in religious and ritual matters. As a slave however, he couldn't have the same rights that freeborn had. He couldn't marry a freeborn, he couldn't participate in political life like the freeborn, and he couldn't take titles.
Think of Osu as a eunuch in an oriental royal household. He could become very powerful, but still had an inferior status as a slave and an emasculated man. Sure I am always interested in matters concerning culture and tradition of Southern Nigerians especially Thank you for the information |

ElekeNtioba: You dont get it. Theres nothing remotely good about osu caste system. It was a traditional practise that turned into an obnoxious discriminatory system. Christianity merely opened people's eyes. Persons of various faiths in igbo land have condemned practises like d osu system not just the churches.
Christiniaty has helped Igbos get rid of many traditional practises that are incompatible with modern values. Practises like d caste system, killing of twins, etc
As for christianity not to be trusted, all i can say is dat christianity should not be judged by the actions of christians especially when some of their actions are contrary to the message of Christ. While the message of Christ is divine, His followers are not; they are human after all. I am nt talking about actions of Christians but the whole story of christianity from inception till date, there has been more lies and manipulative tactics ...anyway that's nt the issue here Fact is Osu is a tradition Igbo system, like against many other traditions in today's African, christianity and Islam has brought hatred and resentment but above all misinformation about traditions. In what Igbo Towns were killing of twins ever practised? wat are ur sources?? Because maybe contrary to what you learnt from school and church, Killing of twins is only known in the Efik city of Calabar. |

Culture › Re: Interesting Facts About The Urhobo People Of Delta State by macof(m): 12:45am On Feb 11, 2015 |
maxiipriestt: literarymathy, you have your story all stolen from my people the itsekiri. i'm itsekiri from koko and firstly, warri is not indigenously your town. the name "warri" is a corrupted form of a word in itsekiri "IWERE", meaning it's the way it is, translated literarily. you called other towns like sapele and a couple others and claim them for the urhobos, but incidentally, history tells us that sapele is an itsekiri town which was a hub for economic activity with the early itsekiri traders who traded with the west and who employed urhobo workers as slaves. and sapele was given up as a bargaining chip by Nanna Olomu to make peace with a warlord because of a breach in terms of agreement for a certain battle price. the soup which you made mention of "owo" is an itsekiri soup and owo is actually a borrowed word from us mister... i can pick out a myriad of false claims which i won't acquiesce to. warri is the ancestral home of the itsekiri people and we only conceded territory to your people because you have a healthy population there due to your high rate of proliferation, and your persistent clamouring for a stake in the city. well, i can understand where you are coming from because the urhobos and ijaw people have been slaves to us for too long and are out against us trying to carry out a vendetta, but it's not really the answer to anything. and you didn't mention the native attire which i saw in your pictures showing you wearing our "kemeje", would you say that that is indigenously yours too? and to stake more leverage on what i've said so far, we are a singular tribe without mixed dialects, probably the only tribe in nigeria which speak a singular dialect and who have just one singular king and not multiple kings. we have chiefs who report to our king, the Olu of Warri. so there are a lot of flaws and false claims about your heritage which i vehemently dispute. also, we have had a long running history with the benin people and our monarchs are intertwined with each other and we've both been the main custodians of the southern region of nigeria from the days when our history was been written. it's really not fair making erroneous remarks and statements because people who don't know the truth would be misled and made to think that this you've put up there is the case, whereas it's not. so please kindly do yourself a favour and get to know your history and people and don't get it mixed up. All these talk about slaves...where's the record? And every tribe speaks one dialect, that's what makes them a tribe. So it's nt peculiar to Itsekiri |

ElekeNtioba: enough with the false assertions. D discrimination has been even before d arrival of Christianity.
Infact, christanity helped break the boundary between d "osu' and 'nwadiala'. As pple turned to christianity, the osu caste sytem became obsolete.
Osu caste system was the product of then traditional practises and beliefs of the Igbos. Fortunately, just like the traditional religion of the Igbos, the osu system is almost extinct.
Find some other ethnic group dat hate progress to preach to. Yet you don't feel the least bit suspicious that it's churches that talk about Osu in this manner. christianity cannot be trusted, there's too much lies and deceit both in the origins and modern conduct of christianity |

Eseries: Hello everyone! I want to state categorically clear that osu is hardly an issue in the contemporary Igbo society. Just think about numerous famous Igbos bearing Nwaosu (decendant/children of Osu) as surname. They are all well received and celebrated in their various communities. In today's world young ones marry whosoever they want be it oyibo, people from other tribes and nationalities, Osu is hardly one of the issues to be bothered about. There is this girl that bears Nwosu that graduated with first class in my department, You think peradventure it happened we chose to marry anyone can stop me because she is "osu"? Believe me most people think like me except few old conservative people and their opinion hardly matter.
Just like killing of twins babies, selling people out to slavery and other nefarious practices found in our culture have been phased out.
If there there is a group that embraces change that comes along with civility, Igbo are the one! no one gives a dammn about if you osu or not, become a success and people will celebrate and associate with you! who do hell even keep track of who is osu or who is their children or let alone children of their children? Did Igbos ever practice killing of twins where and when? |

To be honest I don't like the idea of feminism, the name alone gives it away as a sexist movement. Most feminist are sexists or have sexist tendencies
Women should be respected as human beings deserving of the rights of a Man but shouldn't be given undue advantage over a man either Jst look at the crazy woman terminating a pregnancy and depriving a baby boy of life
If all feminists were like this then Masculism is even better
On average Men are more capable than women in sectors were men rule due to interest and mentality but when a woman is capable she shouldn't be shoved aside
It's absolutely stuupid for a person to tell me to give a woman what she doesn't deserve or what she's not capable of in the guise of equal rights |
