Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has allegedly ordered the arrest of policemen caught wearing their new camouflage all over the country.

The directive is said to be in response to a petition written against Abubakar to the Presidency concerning the sale of the camouflage.

Sources say, “This incident began sometime last month when some concerned policemen wrote a petition to the Presidency concerning the sale of these camouflage uniforms. The camouflage, which is available at all police stores nationwide, were being sold at either N10,000 or N15,000 and then sewn for N5,000.

As opposed to the right way of issuing these police uniforms free of charge to the men of the police force.

However, deputy force police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, a chief superintendent of police, dismissed the arrest allegation.
Nairaland General“I Sell Petrol At N48 Per Litre, Even Fuel Stations Buy From Me” – Pipeline Vand by MahatmaGhandi(op): 4:12pm On Apr 02, 2013

52-year-old suspected oil pipeline vandal, Komuko Ayekede who was arrested in Lagos state by the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit on Easter Sunday confessed selling stolen petrol at N48 per litre.

Ayekede confessed that due to his ridiculous price reduction, he had numerous customers including filling stations.

He however pleaded with the police to release him and the other four suspects, Oluwafemi Bamidele, James Awolowo, Eugene Stanley and Kunle Ogushe, in the spirit of Easter.

“We thought that on a day like Easter, security operatives would go and rest with their families. Please forgive us at least for the sake of Christ that rose from the dead because of you and me,” he said.

The suspect who was formerly into sand dredging said poverty lured him into the illegal business.

He said, “I was engaged in sand dredging. Some years ago when my business was not moving well, my friend, Ebi, advised me to join him in pipeline
vandalism. Initially, I said no because I was a hardworking person, but when it dawned on me that this was the only source of living, I joined Ebi.

“We were using kegs but because of the level of the water, we introduced the use of sack which contains a larger quantity. The sack can contain as much as 125 litres of fuel or diesel. Normally we move about 270 bags per trip.

“When we get to the pipe, we will open it and use our own valve to block it immediately. You then run it through the hose to the water where the bags and my boys are waiting.”

He boasted that selling of the stolen product was not a problem for him as customers are always on standby to buy them.

According to him, “Selling the product is not a problem. There are so many of them at Apapa. The main job is to collect the product and successfully cross the river especially through FESTAC canal. This is why we normally work at midnight.”

The officer in charge of the Task Force, Friday Ibadin said that at about 12am, on Sunday they got an intelligence report that vandals were at Ijedodo, Ijegun in Iba Local Government Council Development area of Lagos.

THE Easter celebration in Ataka Village in Kaura Local Government Council OF Kaduna state was marred as gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen raided the area in the early hours of Sunday, killing over 20 residents.

Several other people were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to unknown hospital in the area while the gunmen disappeared because of the terrain of the area.

However, the police in state said they were yet to ascertain the number of those killed.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer , Aminu Lawan, A Deputy Superintendent OF Police, DSP, while confirming the incident said that the Area Commander and military operatives were trying ascertain the figure of those either killed or injured during the attack.

Said Lawan: “ There was an attack. Well people were actually killed but were still contacting the area commander who right now other security agency most especially he military to get the exact figures of those who lost their lives. That is what I told you. I said our area commander and the zonal commander as well as the military people are already at the place. And they are working hard to get the figures of those either killed or injured.

“Let us wait and see if in a short while they will get the figures. The place is call Ataka, just a little bit far away and it is a border town with Plateau state. The place had a lot of hard terrain.

“The incident , according to what we got happened in early hours of yesterday but because of the terrain, the hill and the mountains. Definitely it would be a kind of difficult for the operatives to get to the place but we are still hoping to get to the root of the incident. Our men are already there and they have already taken control of the place.”

He added that the command had commenced investigation into the incident.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the gunmen suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen stormed the village in the early hours of Sunday shooting sporadically and in the process, many people including women and children were killed.

He noted that but for the assistant from neighboring villages, the village which shares border with Plateau State would have been wiped out completely by the gunmen who were in charge for several hours.

According to the eyewitness, it was a serious attack as the gunmen just enter the village and open fire on everybody at sight.

He said: “At least, not more than 19 people were killed in the crisis in the Ataka Community in Ataka Chiefdom of Kaura area of the state. It is a border town with Plateau State. They just invaded the area and started shooting.

“It was a hostility. It was a serious attack. The gunmen open fire on everybody. Other people came from the neighboring villages. If not for the people that came from the neighboring villages to ward-off the attack, the gunmen would have wiped out.”

Plateau Crisis: Death toll now at 50
By Nurudeen Mohammed on March 31, 2013

The week-long orgy of killings in Plateau State is snowballing into a crisis with about 50 persons declared dead, says officials of the State Task Force (STF), a combined team of military and police personnel tasked with ensuring security in the state.

While Jos city and surrounding urban areas where past crises and massacres in which thousands were killed are patrolled by the STF, the recent killings are a string of attacks on villages in rural, remote areas of the state.

The STF spokesman, Navy Lt. Jude Akpa, said that the most recent killings happened on Friday night when a town in the Bokkos area of BarkinLadi Local Government Area was attacked and nine people killed, with the attackers fleeing before soldiers arrived.

The management committee chairman of the local government, Emmanuel Lohman corroborated his story, saying that gunmen armed with assault rifles struck a village called Ratas and opened fire in the night while many there were sleeping, while witnesses said that shooting lasted for almost two hours before the attackers fled.

Suspicion has been falling on nomadic Hausa-Fulani herdsmen by villagers as being behind the attacks, a charge denied by the state secretary of the cattle breeders association, Mohammed Nura who said that Hausa-Fulani people have also been killed in the reprisals.

The figure of 50 people said to have been killed in attacks, includes an assault on Wednesday on a village in the Riyom local government area that killed 28 people and an attack on Thursday in the Bokkos local government area that killed 18 civilians. The military said it killed six while trying to repel attackers during the assault.

Meanwhile, the management committee chairman of BarkinLadi local government area of Plateau State, Emmanuel Lohman, has given the personnel of the Special Task Force commendation on Jos crisis saying but for their constant patrols around the villages in the area, there would have been another bloody night yesterday.

Loman who spoke in Jos yesterday while giving an update on the renewed killing of people by suspected hired Fulani gunmen said STF personnel prevented another round of bloody killings because of their constant patrol of the area.

The council chairman commended the STF personnel for their professional conduct, noting that the council will support them in the bid to rid the area of the killers.

Meanwhile, the Police in Gombe State have confirmed the killing of two people when gunmen attacked Kumo Police Division in Akko Local Government Area on Friday night.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mohammed Sule, told newsmen in Gombe that the dead were among the attackers, while his men recovered one AK 47 rifle and two motorcycles from the attackers.

“As far as I am concerned, none of my men was killed. What I know is that two of the attackers were killed and we recovered one AK 47 rifle and two motorcycles,” he said.

Sule, however, said he was expecting details of the incident since it occurred in the night.

He decried the lack of information from the public to enable the police to prevent such attacks.

Some residents of Kumo town reported that they heard sounds of gunshots when the attackers came in the night.

They said they could not sleep in the night because of the exchange of fire between the police and the attackers.

Vincent Enyeama believes the criticism he has received in his international career have been largely fuelled by tribal sentiments not because of his performance in-between the sticks.

The former Enyimba keeper came under the spotlight severally in 2012 after making a series of costly errors in high profile matches for the national team and he believes his critics have been vocal because he is not from one of the three major tribes in Nigeria.

The 30-year old Super Eagles safe hands is from Akwa Ibom state, South-South Nigeria.

“My critics will remain as long I am still with the national team. I am criticised because I am not Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo but I am not worried,” Enyeama said in a recent interview.
Music/RadioWhy I Didn’t Talk To Fela For Six Years –femi Kuti by MahatmaGhandi(op): 11:28am On Mar 31, 2013
Femi Kuti

http:///WLJl4nSH9R

Fela Anikulapo’s son, Femi, tells OLUFEMI ATOYEBI and GBENGA ADENIJI what people didn’t know about the late Afrobeat musician

Why did your father choose a controversial lifestyle?

It was because he was too honest about his way of life. He liked women and he did not hide it. He liked to smoke marijuana and he did it in the open. Many people like women but they do it secretly. There are so many brothels all around the world but Fela never patronised them, many people go there to pay for sex.

You will be shocked to know the number of people that smoke marijuana in Nigeria and all over the world. I hope you know that some countries are legalising the smoking of marijuana now. He was truthful about his way of life while many of us are hypocritical about ours. Many people were envious that he was too honest and bold and that was why there were so many controversies about his life.

Most of his friends who are highly-placed admire women even girls young enough to be their daughters. They leave their matrimonial homes to meet them secretly. Some of them hide in hotels to do what they cannot do in the open. Many of them smoke but they are not brave enough to say they smoke. All the call girls you see on Allen Avenue, who picks them? Fela never did.

How was he able to manage his many wives?

It was very stressful for him. Do not forget that he divorced all of them. They were not faithful to him. When he decided to marry them, he did so for a reason. He said they had been with him in difficult times. They endured police harassment and beating. But they never left. Though they were very loyal to him, they still had a bad image in the public because people were calling them prostitutes.

He felt that the best way to protect them was to marry them. They became Fela’s queens, so the society had to respect them. I believe he loved them and he was already sleeping with them before he married them. It was not really a big deal to anybody that knew them. For instance, my mother knew this was happening so it was not a hidden thing. The big deal was how he was able to convince the 27 of them to marry him same day.

Did Fela talk you into music?

He did not influence me as such. I always knew I would go into music. It was just a question of how and when. He was however a big motivation in my life because every child wants to be like his or her father. The son of a plumber will want to be like his father, especially if he is learning the trade early. If the son loves the father, he will want to emulate him. I am not a different son. I love my father and wanted to do what he was doing. The only question hanging over that ambition was whether I could fulfil that ambition perfectly.

How did he punish any of his children who misbehaved?

He beat us. In fact, I was the one who got the most beating in the house when we were young.

Can you remember things you did that made him beat you?

I stole my mother’s £1 to buy chewing gum one day. You can imagine how many wraps of chewing gum that money would buy. They were not less than 100. My friend convinced me to go and steal the money but we were caught while chewing the gum. When my father asked me where I got the money from, I was speechless. I was still thinking of what to say when he started beating me with his hand. He then warned me never to steal again.

He also beat me when he caught me with cigarette in 1969. My mother used to smoke and he saw me put the cigarette in my mouth. I did not really smoke the cigarette because it was not lit, I only put it in my mouth but it angered him when he saw what I did. He beat me again and warned me not to touch cigarette again.

Why do you think it has been difficult to replicate Fela’s style of music?

It is so because the foundation of the band was truthful. He was not pretentious. He really believed in what he was saying. Despite all the police harassment, he was not moved. Many people would have gone to seek political asylum in another country but Fela did not do that. He had so many opportunities outside Nigeria and he would have taken advantage of them to run away from his enemies. These are the things that every generation admires in him.

What are those things you imbibed from your father?

I may not be able to mention them. In the way I deal with people, I am very truthful. If I say I am going to do something, I would do it. But I am more of my mother than my father. My elder sister has more of my father than I do. I am more of a practical person. If I plan to do something, I will think of the consequences. My father would never weigh any decision before executing it. If he planned to go to Dodan Barracks, he would just go there. As for me, I make plans before I do anything. My father would not write a Will. But because I know that I could get killed, I had written my Will a long ago.

I know that in a divorce case, my wife could claim one third of my property, so I would not go into wedlock. The most important thing to me right now are my children. Now, I will not play to the gallery. I will not say because people love me, they must come first before my family. Who are my family? My children of course. So, whether you love me or not, I will let you know that my children come before you, take it or leave it. I live this way because I learnt from my father’s life, the decisions he took and the consequences. When you learn from someone, you don’t have to do what he did. Fela did what he did for his own reasons. I cannot criticise why he did what he did.

Also, we must remember the stardom. Nobody was as big as my father. He had over 100 people around him daily when he became a star. I cannot live like that because I don’t want too many people around me. I saw what people did to him. It was too much. I can keep the Afrika Shrine open to everybody but not my house.

If you come to my home, you will only see me, my kids and may be my girlfriend. Sometimes, my friends visit but I don’t keep a crowd around for any reason, my father did. I like women but I saw the harassment he went through with 27 wives. It is not that I don’t want 27 wives but I know what will happen because of what happened to my father. I can’t tell a woman that I will be faithful in our relationship. That was part of the problem of my marriage. I cannot be faithful. I will not lie about that. It is not that I cannot be faithful, but I cannot start my relationship by saying I am going to be faithful till death do us part. There are possibilities that if another woman comes and I like her, I cannot give the assurance that I will not have an affair with her. I have no intention whatsoever to bring all of them under one roof. My intention now is to cater for my children and do my job to the best of my ability.

Did Fela have any special food?

He ate any food. He liked cakes and ice cream too. I don’t like cakes. I can eat ice cream and chocolate once in a while but my father loved them all. If somebody is celebrating and there is a cake, I can take a little piece not to offend my host. My father could die for cakes. If you visited him and looked inside his refrigerator, you would see lots of cake in it.

Your father did not hide his hatred for western medicine. Is it the same with you?

I grew up not liking tablets too. I grew up to be a traditionalist like my dad. But I later realised that there are too many fake traditional medicine in our society. The government must understand that many of these herbs are claiming the lives of our people. We must ask ourselves which of the herbs has been scientifically proven to cure malaria and the ailment they claim to cure. I once had malaria and I drank herbs but I was not cured. I felt very uncomfortable. I will not say that herb does not work because Africa believes in it. It is a fact that we did survive before orthodox medicine came.

There was African traditional medicine, but where is it today? Everywhere, you will see people hawking herbs, saying it work for this and that. People buy them and mix with hot drinks. Really, when you are mixing alcohol with herbs, you are damaging your liver. While you think you are curing one thing, if it does work, you are damaging another thing in your body. Until we have concrete fact to say something works for the body, we will be deceiving ourselves.

Why do you think Fela hated former President Olusegun Obasanjo?

Olusegun Obasanjo was a bad leader. He did not do well for Nigeria. He ruled this country three times but has nothing to show for it. They called the soldiers that burnt Kalakuta Republic and killed my grandmother unknown soldiers. The Federal Government is yet to apologise for their action against the Kuti family. Whether they like it or not, Fela was one of the biggest stars from Africa. As the days go by, people are beginning to understand the importance of his music. The Lagos State Government is building a museum in his honour. The family does not have that kind of money to build a museum. It is not the governor’s money but the state government money. But the governor took the decision on behalf of the people.

Another museum is also being built Ogun State. Governors are beginning to understand that Kuti’s name cannot be swept under the carpet. The family has done so much for Nigeria and the world. Many people are playing afrobeat style of music today because Fela invented it. Some people are saying he did not start it. But the question is: Who started it and stood firm using the music creatively? Fela stood for many great things and his contribution to the society cannot be pushed aside.

Did he have time to take the family out for leisure?

In 1967, I remember that he took us to Onikan swimming pool and also Federal Palace Hotel. That was the first and last outing for fun with us. He always made it clear that he was not a conventional father. He did not want us to go to school not because he did not like education, but because he believed that education was colonial. He believed that it was structured to show that Europe is supreme and Africa is not good. Even when he took me out of school in my fourth year in secondary school, I had acquired vast knowledge about the outside world through the books I read at home. I was known as a professor in the Kalakuta Republic. I read books such as Blackman and Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa. I read so much that I even found there was a Pharaoh Kuti in Egypt. I wondered if this Egyptian Pharaoh Kuti was in any way related to the Kuti family in Nigeria. My father said we are probably related.

Which school were you attending before Fela made that decision?

I was studying at Baptist Academy and he withdrew me from there when Obasanjo deployed soldiers to the school. I later went to Igbobi College and spent a year. He advised me to leave the school in form four. Many believed I would become a nonentity because of his action. There was disagreement within the family, my mother was against it, but my dad stood his ground. She wondered why my dad took me out of school when he went to one of the best schools in the UK.

She also said since he did not teach me music how then would I be great in life? My father told her not to worry that I would be great. I was not happy too and did not speak to him for six years. He told me that he was confident that I would be great. I did not know what he saw in me. The day my album, Wonder Wonder, became popular and I was becoming a household name in Nigeria, he called our family members and told them that the same boy he withdrew from school had become a successful musician.

At that time, it was only my father and King Sunny Ade that were travelling abroad frequently for musical concerts. But I suddenly started travelling abroad more than the two of them because I was becoming known more outside the country.

Will I do the same for my son? No. He will get a good education. I will let him understand street life which I grew up to know so that he will have a feel of it, but he must be formally educated.

Where were you when soldiers invaded Kalakuta Republic?

I was coming back from the school when I saw the soldiers. They wanted to arrest me. But I managed to escape through a place called Alagbole behind Kalakuta. I ran and went to pick my younger sister at Mary Magdalene Primary School. We then crossed over the railway and went home.

Is there anything you miss about Fela?

I miss his being a grandfather. I think he would have been a fantastic grandfather. He had already been showing the signs with my sister’s daughter and my son. He died in 1997 and my son was born in 1995. I know that what he was not able to do for us, he would have done for our children if he were still alive.

well, it is quite amazing to see how things have turned in nigeria, maybe nigeria needs a fresh start, apart from granting the boko haram amnesty maybe the doors of all nigerian prisons should be thrown open and all inmates granted amnesty so that we can all have a fresh start, that is what the northern leaders should be asking for, at least majority of the people dying in prison did not commit as much as the boko boys. imagine a mother that lost all her kids in one of these attacks hearing that amnesty has been granted to boko haram ,what do you think her reactions will be ? dont you think granting amnesty to boko haram will open the portal for the disintegration of nigeria ? because what i see is if the boko boys are granted amnesty massob will heartlessly and boldly maim who ever they think their targets should be and ask for amnesty should it not be granted nigeria will be plunged in another civil war bout, i personally feel the government has not really put its foot down, if you want to erase boko harm it is quite easy, do not execute them extra judicially, any one caught should face trail immediately, if found guilty should be executed publicly in their community, by so doing a strong signal will be sent to every one that no one will cheat the hang man or firing squad unit in nigeria, why do you think these groups could not arise in the military regimes, there is a level of insincerity on the part of government in this fight as some people are being treated as sacred cows, trust me if a traditional ruler that is linked with this group is fairly tried and speedily executed in public, this boko haram thing will die down, all the government need do is show just one example that it means business. JTF is not the solution, rule of law, maximum legal punishment for committed offenses is the only way out of the boko crises, imagine if all the boko suspects caught since the beginning of the raids were properly tried and executed, imagined if the founder of the group was not extra judicially killed but fairly tried and executed, we will not be having all this problems, the government not necessarily GEJ's has been responsible for what ever injuries the boko boys have inflicted on innocent nigerians. the government knows the sponsors, tie up evidences against a few and execute, trust me calm will return to the north faster than anticipated, fire cannot burn for long without fuel, these sponsors are the fuel, take out the fuel and boko haram will be history.
PoliticsRe: Ijaw Itsekiri Crisis Again by MahatmaGhandi: 12:35pm On Mar 30, 2013
i read so many uniformed utterances on this thread, the version we have all read is obviously the itsekiri perspective, they the itsekiris may be small but are very intellectual and always use that to their advantage, also they whip up the big tribe trying to oppress the small tribe sentiment, but if you have lived in warri before you wont take any stories based on face value, i dont have the complete details right now, but i know this goes way beyond what has been posted. the poster is just using the general dissatisfaction of the nigerian people with the ijaw man in power to put the ijaws in bad light, well their recent activities since their new found political prominence has not helped matters though, i see this as propaganda though, once upon a time the urhobos, the ijaws and itsekiris once lived in harmony, now enter the coming of the colonialists one of these tribes had first contact with them while the others ran away, this created a lopsided relationship favoring the party that stayed and had interaction with the colonialists, if you are interested in history go find out what happened to the tittle nana of itsekiri, also how the title olu of warri came about, the nigerian problem is really huge and will be hard to figure, problems like this occur all over the country e.g there is one hausa community in bayelsa or rivers cant really tell which now that was set up by the courts, because the hausas went to court and said they are being chased from their land and they know no other place to call home, tomorrow there may be up rising to chase those people away and they will insist it is their home and we will have another crises in our hand, the bakassi wahala is in another corner. i do not take sides with any of the parties i just dont fancy a situation where people make judgements based on stories from one party.

African People’s Congress (APC)All Progressives Congress (APC)APCBarrister Saidi BalogunChannels TelevisionChannels TVMr. Rotimi FashakinNewsNigeriaNigeria News
National Secreatry of the African People’s Congress (APC), Barrister Saidi Balogun and a Member of the Publicity Committtee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Rotimi Fashakin today traded words over the claim on who possesses the acronym APC.

Both were speaking during Channels Television’s weekend breakfast programme Sunrise Saturday.

Mr Fashakin argued that the Mr Balogun’s, yet to be registered, party was put together shabbily and a plot to destabilize and dilute their votes by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the PDP are agitated by the merging parties and have planted the African People’s Congress to supposedly weaken their popularity going by the fact that they carry the same acronym.

However in a swift reaction, Balogun debunked all the claims, saying the African People’s Congress has been in existence since 20011, claiming it was formed as an association and it remained quiet because they are not “noise makers”.

He said “We have taken concrete steps to be registered by INEC”. Balogun said they deliberately refused to talk to the press since the formation of the association because “We are still trying to put our house in order”.

Furthermore , he said “We have a very long way to go, our party is a pan African party”.
