PoliticsRe: What Is Actually The Difference Between A Ruler And A Leader? by maimalari(op): 10:54am On Feb 20, 2011
Ikengawo:
a ruler owns his subjects. Meaning they are accountable to him but he isn't accountable to them. the same relationship a person has with property.

a leader is someone that carries a collective from one point to another. you can lead someone to prosperity the same way you can lead someone into poverty, both are leaders because they are the prime navigators.

a ruler is thus an owner and a leader is a driver. a leader is only an authority because a collective has chosen to follow their path but a ruler moves the collective where they see fit as his property.

This is why i cringe when i hear governors and presidential hopefuls talk about 'ruling' nigeria or their respective states. It shows a weak understanding of the english language and democracy.

This is why americans don't call their presidents 'rulers' like nigerians do, they don't call their tenures 'rules' the same way we say "when obasanjo was ruling" or "when yar adua was ruling" or "we want the south to rule" so on and so forth.

Root Words
Rule: To command
Lead: To guide

Thanks. From the above,I have a better understanding. We as a nation deserves leadership and not "rulership".

During the military era, "rulers" is often used to refer to the government of the day. In the democratic era,"leaders" is being used. But what amazed me was the description of Jonathan as a ruler by an international media. Is there really a difference between the two?

I was an eye witness to the stampede. Jonathan and pdp are solely responsible for the deaths. Pdp actually hired crowds from different villages to grace the occation at a fee and at an agreed time. the event started later than scheduled. when the agreed time was up, most of the hired people started to leave the stadium, but in a swift reaction the police hurriedly closed the big gate in the stadium in other to force them to remain in the stadium(monies were pledged to the crowd to remain, but most of them refused). This move resulted to a fight, which the police responded by shooting anyhow and people started scampering and forcing themselves through a 3feet door. If u can imagine when about 20000 people are forcing themselves through a small door. Thank God i was sitting in my car outside the stadium.

Let us look at the 2 PDP Governors in the southwest. Gbenga Daniel, who runs the state without a legislature. Under him 9 lawmakers suspended 15 lawmakers, and Alao Akala who runs Oya state with Thugs. Compare them with the ACN Governors, Fashola the achiever, and the other 3 Governors who followed due process in court to get back their mandates. So am confused when Pres. Goodluck refers to the former as rascals. Issue based campaign indeed
Like u rightly said, the southwest pdp leaders are the rascals. Even obj is a rascal compared to tinubu. I advice Gej to desist from this kind of campaign and face the real issues bothering on our great country. Name calling can only earn him "atiefku's agony" in the general elections.

PoliticsJonathan Says South-West Leaders (Non-PDP) Are Rascals by maimalari(op): 7:34pm On Feb 08, 2011
President Goodluck Jonathan has stressed the critical nature of the South-West to his administration, saying that the zone will not be left to “rascals” to rule.
Specifically, the President noted that Lagos State, being the commercial and industrial hub of the country, must be governed by the PDP.
Jonathan spoke on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo State during the commencement of his presidential campaign in the South-West.
The President said the party’s machinery would be legally deployed to ensure that the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Ade Dosumu, emerged victorious in April.
According to him, PDP leaders “will not sleep” until power was wrested from the Action Congress of Nigeria in Lagos State.
He said, “South-West is the most important zone in Nigeria. It is the most cosmopolitan zone where all Nigerians come. It is a mini Nigeria and it is very unique.
“Major commercial activities take place in Lagos and its adjoining states. We are happy that we have a strong support base here. All we can promise the people of the South-West is transparent and good governance.
“We (PDP) must take over all the states in the South-West. The zone is too important to be left in the hands of rascals. We shall take over Lagos, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states.
“It is true that we have our challenges in the zone, but we are on top of them all. We shall resolve our differences in our own way.”
Three of the four states mentioned by the President are governed by governors elected on the platform of the ACN.
They are Mr. Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) and Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).
The fourth state, Ondo is governed by Dr. Segun Mimiko of the Labour Party.
Jonathan told the crowd at Mapo Hill that if elected in the April poll, his administration would improve the nation’s security, economy, power , employment, entertainment industry, transport and agriculture.
He recalled that his administration had injected about N500bn into the Bank of Industry to encourage job creation, adding that out of the sum, about N200bn had already been disbursed.
On transportation, the President said that his government had completed the refurbishment of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line which was started by the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He read the Riot Act to those behind the recent bombings in some parts of the country, saying the era of impunity had gone forever.
Jonathan said, “There are security challenges all over the world and our country has had its fair share. We must arrest those behind bomb blasts in our country no matter how long it will take us.
“The era of impunity is over. Security personnel are already on their trail and we shall arrest them.”
The President had while inaugurating the presidential campaign office in Abuja on Tuesday, said the PDP would win the presidency in April.
The host governor of the rally, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, in his goodwill message, said the re-election bid of the President was a foregone conclusion.
Alao-Akala recalled that Mapo Hill had played host to prominent politicians, who came to solicit for votes and won. Jonathan’s case, according to him, will not be an exception.
He said, “Alhaji Shehu Shagari was here. Chief Obasanjo and the late Umaru Yar’Adua were also here to solicit the votes of our people and they won.
“You will win. In fact, you have won the election because your case cannot be an exception.”
Alao-Akala argued that the recent sackings of some PDP governors in the zone did not reflect the potential of the PDP, maintaining that the party remained the party to beat in the country.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, who was among those that were handed PDP flags to contest the April elections, urged youths in the South-West not to waste their votes on other parties.
Also at the rally, Obasanjo said that the emergence of Jonathan as President would deepen democracy and strengthen the country’s unity.
He, however, said that nothing should be taken for granted in PDP’s bid to win the presidential election in April.
Obasanjo said, “Nothing should be taken for granted. We know we have work to do. There are areas in this country today that are crying for attention.
“The areas include security, economy, corruption and infrastructure. These areas cannot and must not be neglected. I take solace in the fact that Jonathan has gone through a period of tutelage.”
The former president also called on the party’s leadership to ensure that all members, who felt displeased by the outcome of PDP primaries, were reconciled and brought back into the party’s mainstream
The reconciliation, he added, must be from the ward to the national level.
“Democracy is about number. We need everybody; the good, the bad and the ugly. We have been behind the scene in the zone before, we are now in the mainstream and we must remain there with the rest of the country,” he added.
Highlights of the rally included the handing over of the PDP flag to some candidates in the zone.
While Alao-Akala got the flag to contest the governorship election, Adetunji Olurin and Dosunmu were given the flags to contest in Ogun and Lagos states respectively.
But the presentation of a flag to Bankole took members of the party, who thronged the venue, by surprise.
The name of the Speaker was missing on the list of successful candidates in the recently concluded primaries of the party, which was released by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday.
Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who is the South-West Coordinator of the Jonathan-Sambo Presidential Campaign , and his supporters were absent from the rally.
Also, the Senate Leader, Chief Teslim Folarin, and other members of the PDP in Oyo State, who are against the second term ambition of Alao-Akala, also boycotted the rally.
A former presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Chief Harry Akande, was formerly received into the party at the rally.
Daniel, who addressed supporter at his Asoludero Residence in Sagamu, said he was prevented from attending the presidential campaign rally.
Accusing some people of ‘disorganising things’ in Ogun State, the governor said, “I pray that all the people that can make us to be annoyed may God take them away.”
He added that he was finding it difficult to understand the kind of luck that had befallen the PDP in the South-West.
He said, “I was about going to Ibadan and you came to block the way that I should not go, and I asked why. I was told the people of the state are annoyed and aggrieved.
“We have been ruling Ogun State with honesty and truth and the people of the state appreciated and commended us. But some people came and they were disorganizing things, they claimed to be God.
“I don’t know the kind of luck that has befallen PDP in the South West. People who stole from the nation are today walking free on the streets.
“In Ogun State as God liveth; we have been troubled since the past five years, they took us to court, brought EFCC and they could not do anything.”
He lamented the rejection of the list submitted to INEC by the PDP faction led by him. The governor said, “We conducted our primaries, they brought people to monitor it from Abuja, INEC, SSS, police and all witnessed it. Everything was recorded only for us to hear after about seven days that they were removing and substituting.
“Those who did not come out; those who did not know about the party and did not participate were said to have won the primaries. I promise that none of our candidates will be substituted.”

ENUGU – Hours after it published Governor Sullivan
Chime as the governorship candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Enugu State, the
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,
Monday night, withdrew his name from the list of
governorship candidates saying it was displayed in
error.
But reacting to the development, Tuesday, the
Sullivan Chime ’s Campaign Organisation said it
was not perturbed expressing confidence that
Chime would retain the PDP flag at the end of
ongoing legal tussle.
NEC had displayed the list of 12 governorship
candidates of various political parties including
Governor Chime as PDP ’s flag bearer at its
Independence Layout office at about 2 pm on
Monday following which his supporters stormed
the INEC office in jubilation, but five hours later,
precisely at 7 pm, the commission removed the
names of the governor and his running mate,

PoliticsTunde Bakare Is Also A Northerner. Buhari Has Messed Up. by maimalari(op): 11:04am On Feb 02, 2011
Tunde Bakare's choice as the running mate of Muhammadu Buhari has been described as a surprise to many Nigerians and a miscalculation by the party. This is the view of Aghanya Dennis, the Former National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

According to Mr Dennis, Mr Bakare has no political constituency and is also a northerner residing in Lagos. "Pastor Bakare, with all due respect, is from Kwara State." He said. He described the choice as one of the greatest mistakes made by those packaging the presidency of the CPC, he however declared that he has nothing against the man of God. "He does not have influence over the Afenifere nor the ACN whose political strength is growing on a daily basis in the South West," he added. Mr Dennis in a press statement said "in politics, you don't allow your opponent to cow you into taking panicking measures
over situations.

"My friends from the Southern part of the country have been calling to protest this choice of our VP." He said.

He stated that the party is presently facing a lot of crisis in most states of the North, because of the fallout on the choice of governorship candidates, he also said that "in the South West, the ACN and the PDP will definitely carry the day. In the South East it is a
no go area for any other party except the PDP and partly the ACN." Responding to Mr Dennis' statements, Yinka Odumakin, the spokesperson to Mr Buhari said "We do not wish to join issues with Mr Anyanga as it is very clear he does not understand his subject at all.

"What weight do we have to the analysis of a gentleman who claims that Pastor Bakare is from Kwara state? Is he mistaking him for Tunde Idiagbon
or what? Comments are free in this political season but we shall compare notes with him on April 10 ." He said.

Mr Dennis however asked the party's leadership to
do something very urgent to arrest the situation, by
reaching out "to the aggrieved members of the party
immediately. Every person is important in politics."
He concluded.

The minister of state for nigerdelta, honourable Sam ode said it is apparent that the 2011 budget cannot cope
with the existing infrastructural demands in the
country, so the Federal Government is considering
alternative means of funding the projects,
especially securing a concessional loan from the
Islamic Development Bank.
He also recalled that the government had recently
got a bond for such projects.
His words: "Government as you know, is looking
beyond the national budget. We are seeking
alternative sources of funding for our projects. If
you were on news a few days ago, you would see
the bond that Nigeria has just signed to access
funds for projects.
"We are looking at other sources like the Islamic
Development Bank and several other sources for
concessionary lending that is over time. Some of
these fundings go as far as 30 years, and the
interest rates are quite low to give government a
breather to be able to execute these projects."
He prayed that the National Assembly would sign
the 2011 Appropriation Bill for the projects’
implementation.

PoliticsCourt Declares Osita Izunaso Winner Of Pdp Orlu(imo West) Senatorial District by maimalari(op): 8:19am On Jan 29, 2011
A Federal High Court in Abuja Friday ruled that
Senator Osita Izunaso is the legitimate winner of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election for
the Imo West Senatorial District.
The trial Judge, Justice Abdul Kafarati, in his ruling
nullified PDP purported selection of Hope Uzodinma
as the winner of the party primary held on January 8,
2011 on the ground that he had been disqualified by
the party's screening committee to participate in the
primary election.
The court said that Izunaso, having scored the
highest number of votes amongst the eligible
contestants in the primary for Imo West Senatorial
district was entitled to have his name submitted to
the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) for the April National Assembly polls.
The court further issued an order compelling PDP to
submit Izunaso's name to INEC as the candidate that
won the PDP primary election for the senatorial
district.
It also issued an injunction restraining PDP from
presenting Hope Uzodinma as the candidate for the
election.
The court further restrained INEC from accepting or
recognising the first defendant (Uzodinma) as the
candidate of the PDP for the April 2, 2011 election
into the Imo West Senatorial District.
It also restrained Uzodinma from parading himself as
the candidate of PDP for the said election.

For getting only one vote during the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary election,
a defeated aspirant during the contest, Mrs Sarah
Jibril, has alleged foul play and has gone to the
Federal High Court in Abuja to stop President
Goodluck Jonathan from parading himself as winner
of the election.
The Director-General of the Sarah Jibril Campaign
Organisation, Musa Ajogie, told newsmen in Kaduna,
on Tuesday, that they were also asking the court to
declare as null and void the said primary election
where Jonathan was declared winner, alleging that
what the PDP did was ridiculous and had set a bad
precedence.
Mrs Jibril also asked the court to declare that Atiku
Abubakar was not the Northern consensus candidate
for the PDP and joined President Jonathan, Mallam
Adamu Ciroma, Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) chairman, Attahiru Jega and
Atiku Abubakar in the suit.
“They told the court in their affidavit that consensus
as verdict has nothing to do with voting. Consensus
means unanimous agreement on an issue or on a
candidate not by voting.”

PoliticsGovernor Chime Dismisses Engr Onwuegbu's Gubernitorial Claims by maimalari(op): 8:00pm On Jan 24, 2011
GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of
Enugu state, Monday, laughed
off media reports that some PDP
stakeholders were pushing to
replace him with Engr. Anayo
Onwuegbu as the party ’s
gubernatorial candidate for the
2011 elections describing those
behind the move as “dreamers”.
Gov Sullivan Chime of Enugu
State
Chime’s reaction came even as
he declared Thursday and Friday
this week work free days to
enable eligible voters to ensure
that they were duly registered
for the elections.
The Governor who spoke at a
special prayer session at the
Government House to herald the
New Year, maintained that he
was the only recognised
flagbearer of the party in the
elections, adding that he had
already filled and filed the
necessary forms with the
Independent National Electoral
Committee (INEC).
He stressed that any other
claimant to the ticket must be
talking about another party and
not the PDP and urged both
party members and the people
of Enugu state to refuse to be
deceived or distracted by the
antics of some whom he said
were simply out to cause
mischief.
Engr. Onwuegbu had last
weekend told reporters that he
was the authentic PDP
gubernatorial candidate for
Enugu State having been
elected by genuine delegates
that emerged from the party’s
congresses and primary held by
the Okey Ogbonna-led Executive
under the supervision of the
Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC and
conducted by the Senator
Sylvester Ngele-led panel of the
party.
He contended that Chime who
emerged from the Vita Abba-led
executive that had since been
dissolved by the PDP National
Working Committee, cannot
claim to be the party ’s candidate
because he was elected by
illegal and unauthorized
delegates.
But Chime dismissed his claim
as laughable insisting that the
PDP in the state has remained
one despite efforts by some
people to divide it.
“You People should not mind
those people who are making
themselves PDP flagbearers on
the pages of newspapers, they
are only dreaming. No one holds
the PDP gubernatorial ticket in
Enugu but me ”.
Director General of Chime’s
campaign organisation, Dr
Festus Uzor, had also in a chat
with reporters at the weekend,
declared that only one
gubernatorial primaries was
held in Enugu State on January
12, 2011 during which Chime
was returned and so declared by
Alhaji Isa Tafida, the Chairman
of the panel that conducted the
primaries.
He noted that the primaries had
been widely televised and
viewed across the country
adding that anyone purporting
to have conducted any other
primaries or is presenting any
other candidate was merely
deceiving people and trying to
create the semblance of a
division.
Conducting the prayer session,
the Anglican Bishop of Enugu,
Dr Emmanuel Chukwuma,
prophesied that Chime ’s
political enemies would fail in
their efforts to unseat him as his
mandate was divine.
He warned them to desist from
any action that would truncate
peace in the state in pursuit of
selfish reasons adding that they
should rather join forces with
the Governor to complete the
good works he had started in the
state.
“I warn all those fighting
(Governor) Chime that enough is
enough! They should not
truncate the good works of the
Governor and the peace we have
been enjoying in Enugu state for
selfish and personal reasons.
God has already anointed
Governor Chime to lead Enugu
state and today I also confirm
that he will be the Governor of
the state for the next four
years, ” he said.
The Bishop, who also anointed
the Governor with holy oil,
further urged all political office
seekers in the state to ensure
that they had the best
intentions of the people at heart
warning that churches in the
state would be mobilised to
ensure that unfit persons were
not allowed to be voted into
office.
