PoliticsNational Dialogue Is A Huge Joke And Won't Achieve Anything -governor Elechi by maimalari(op): 11:41am On Dec 28, 2013
Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, Friday in a
sudden twist seen as a big surprise, dismissed the
planned national dialogue being promoted by
President Goodluck Jonathan as “a big joke and
waste of time.”
He further said the planned dialogue was a
distraction to Jonathan as the general elections
approaches, adding that he would not participate in
the exercise.
Elechi, who is seen as one of President Jonathan’s
main backers in the South East, made his position
known in Ikwo when founding fathers of the state
paid him Christmas homage.
The Ebonyi governor had earlier in October lauded
the planned dialogue when Jonathan announced it
and urged Nigerians to avail themselves of the
opportunity of contributing meaningfully during the
dialogue “so that all grievances would be
addressed.”
The founding fathers of the state who visited him
yesterday wanted to know the modalities for
selecting delegates from states and issues that
should form their collective stand during the
dialogue.
But they were shocked by the governor’s dramatic
change of mind, when he wrote off the planned
dialogue and stated further that he would not
participate.
Elechi said he was sceptical about the dialogue as it
would not achieve anything “since the constitution
has conferred on the National Assembly the power
to make laws for the country.”
The governor noted that the dialogue could not
supersede the deliberations of the National
Assembly and referred its advocates to revisit the
colloquium by former President Olusegun Obasanjo
in 2005. “We should revisit that colloquium and the
recommendations reached,” he suggested.
Elechi noted that at the colloquium, far- reaching
decisions were reached “but the National Assembly
overrode it because of the third term ambition of
Obasanjo.”
Though Elechi said he would still consult his
constituency to deliberate on whether or not to
participate in the planned national diologue, he
noted that if they eventually chose to participate,
he would distance himself and be an onlooker.
"The National conference to me is a big joke, waste
of time and a distraction to Goodluck Jonathan. I'm
sceptical about it. It will not achieve anything.
I will still consult my people but if at the end of the
day, they decide to participate, I will not stop
anybody but I will distance myself,” he said.
President Jonathan inaugurated a 13-man Advisory
Committee for the planned dialogue on October 7,
after approving the membership and terms of
reference of the committee.
The Committee has Dr. Femi Okurunmu as
Chairman while Dr. Akilu Indabawa will act as
Secretary.
The committee’s terms of reference include: To
consult expeditiously with all relevant stakeholders
with a view to drawing up a feasible agenda for the
proposed national dialogue and to make
recommendations to government on structure and
modalities of the proposed national dialogue.
It was also directed to make recommendations to
government on how representation of various
interest groups at the national dialogue/conference
will be determined.

PoliticsJonathan's Convoy-police Shoot FRSC Officer 4 Times by maimalari(op): 11:15am On Dec 14, 2013
Policemen and some officials of the Federal
Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday clashed
in Wuse Zone 2 in the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT). The incident involved plain
clothes and FRSC officials who were on the
road to clear it for the convoy of President
Goodluck Jonathan.
In the ensuing melee, an official of the FRSC
was shot while another was injured.
An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP Weekend
that trouble started when officials of the
FRSC were ordered by the police to leave
their duty post around the Central Area
where President Jonathan’s convoy always
pass to the presidential villa from the
Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport.
It was gathered that the policemen and FRSC
officials of the FRSC were mobilised to the
area ahead of the president’s convoy from
the airport.
The alleged refusal of the FRSC officials to
leave the area which they claimed to be their
duty post to ensure traffic flow angered the
policemen who were led by a divisional
police officer (DPO).
The angry policemen allegedly seized the
Hilux van belonging to the FRSC and arrested
its occupants.
But other officials of the FRSC who got wind
of the news blocked the road at the
intersection of Sultan Abubakar Way and
Olusegun Obasanjo Way at Wuse Zone 2
insisting that their officials and vehicle be
released by the policemen.
“As they were arguing, a senior police officer
used his gun to hit an officer of the FRSC on
the head and another policeman started
shooting into the air and suddenly I saw one
official of FRSC down. That is when we
started running for our lives,” the eyewitness
told LEADERSHIP Weekend.
Another eyewitness said the police were
another shot the official four times. “They
came from Bolingo Hotel area where the
president’s usually pass from the airport and
started shouting at the FRSC men who
barricaded the road with their trucks and
then shot one of the FRSC men four times
but I don’t know if he is still alive, he said”.
At the scene of the clash, officials of FRSC
were seen taking the victims to hospital
while men of the Nigeria police wearing
bullet-proof vests were leaving the area.
LEADERSHIP Weekend learnt that the
operation was carried out by men of the
Abuja Crimes Control Squad 44 (ACCOS 44).
Attempt to speak to the most senior officer
of FRSC at the scene yielded no result as he
declined to comment on the matter. One of
the FRSC officials later said that since the
appointment of the new FCT police
commissioner, Femi Ogunbayode, a directive
was given to the FRSC by the police to leave
the streets of Abuja for the highways outside
the Federal Capital City for their operations.
The police high command refused to respond
to enquiries by our correspondent on the
matter.

PoliticsJonathan Remains PDP's Candidate For 2015 Elections - Tukur by maimalari(op): 4:55pm On Dec 13, 2013
The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has declared that President Goodluck Jonathan is the party’s presidential candidate in 2015 general elections. Bamanga Tukur disclosed this during the inauguration of National PDP Councillors’ Forum in Abuja. He further told the party faithful not to be deterred by people leaving for other parties saying that even if they leave the PDP the party remains. He further maintained that PDP remains the strongest and biggest party in Nigeria and Africa insisting that the party is insurmountable.

He said, “Don’t be deterred by some people saying they are leaving the party. People leaving the party are individuals not the party. It doesn’t mean if they leave the party the party leaves. No, the party remains. PDP is the only party in Nigeria that fields a candidate in every election that is held. Don’t be deterred; don’t be afraid, you are part of the ruling party.”

He further tasked the councillors on the role they have to play in making sure that Jonathan wins the 2015 election.

In his remarks the former governorship candidate of the PDP in Edo State Major General Charles Arhiavbere(rtd) said the inauguration showed that the members of PDP are solidly behind President Goodluck Jonathan even as he advised the executives to reach out to the 13 states including Edo State that is not under PDP and bring them under the umbrella of the party.

Speaking on the letter written to President Jonathan by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, the former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha said that Obasanjo should play a fatherly role and stop acting the way he was doing. He maintained that Obasanjo’s present style was what made the former head of state late General Sani Abacha to put him in prison.

He said, “That was exactly what he was doing till Abacha put him in prison, the same style, he has started again. Anyway I don’t think he has advisers. If he has advisers they will call him to order . He is not the only statesman we have in this country. Yes, I respect him as former president. He has contributed also to the sustenance of democracy even in the military, he played a significant role. We acknowledge all that but power is transit. When you finish your tenure you hand over the baton to others and support the person in power and not to pull him down,” he added.

OBJ had his issues while in office
and is partly responsible for putting GEJ in
office (another big mistake on his part), I
agree. But please let us address issues in
Nigeria, and not personalities, otherwise, we
will never move forward as a country. The
key question you should have asked is, Has
OBJ lied in this letter? The answer is clearly
NO.
Nigeria is seriously bleeding, and if you
have not seen it, then please tell us what
you are smoking. The corruption we are
seeing today is at least 250% worse than
whatever we have experienced under any
other previous administration in Nigeria's
history. The Yar'Adua administration has
paid about N285Billion for oil subsidy in
2010, yet GEJ ballooned it to over N2Trillion
within about one year - A growth in costs of
more than 600% within 1 year! And not a
single person is in jail. Yet you say there is
no problem? Are you okay, bro?
The oil and gas industry is almost comatose.
His administration cannot fund a 2013
budget based on a crude oil price of $79/
barrel, yet crude oil prices have been at an
average of over $102/barrel thus far in 2013.
This is largely because oga GEJ's
administration has been unable to stop
bunkering by rogues on the one part, and
collect the taxes and royalties due to the
Federal Government from many of his
friends that bought the assets sold by the
International Oil Companies.
Nigeria has fallen on almost every index of
human development since GEJ came into
office - life expectancy, unemployment,
infant mortality, security, suicide rate and
even polio! Ask the UNDP, ask Transparency
International, ask The Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation.
Yet, rather than look at these FACTS
dispassionately, many of us adopt knee-jerk
atavistic sentiments that do us no good. It
seems most of us have not linked the future
of our children to the misadventures of the
current set of jokers in power.
So, if I do not blame GEJ when things go
wrong in Nigeria, who should I blame? God?
That is why the man is the C-In-C. The buck
stops on his table.

Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in last Saturday's governorship election in the state, Senator Chris Ngige, yesterday squabbled over the alleged killing of two female protesters in Awka.

Ngige's spokesman, Mr. Okelo Madukaife, had in a statement claimed that the two women met their death when policemen shot into a crowd of women protesting the conduct of the election.
However, Obi's Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, disputed the claim, saying it was a figment of Ngige's imagination.

Also, the crisis of confidence between the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party's governorship candidate, Mr. Tony Nwoye, over the election remained unresolved following their different positions on the outcome of the poll.

According to the Ngige camp, the two women, identified as Anne Ifesi and Hannah Njiko, were feared dead when a contingent of policemen tried to disperse the protesters who were marching on the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Awka, to demand the cancellation of the governorship election.

In addition, it said 19 others who sustained varying degree of injuries from beatings and the inhalation of teargas were rushed to a private hospital in Awka for treatment.

It added that some 700 women, ranging from ages 25 to 70 and drawn from the 21 local government areas of the state, were on their way to the INEC headquarters when policemen manning various points at the INEC office intercepted them and engaged them in an argument.

“The situation degenerated when one of the riot policemen shot live ammunition twice on the ground burrowing the tarred road, before his colleagues acting on a telephone clearance from what one officer later described as order from above, dispersed nine teargas canisters into the crowd, in quick succession.
“This led to a stampede that left five women unconscious and 19 injured. But undeterred, the women regrouped at the Arroma Junction, where they were intercepted by men of the State Security Service (SSS) who tried to seize their placards, but the women engaged them in a physical combat, recovering all the placards

“Some of the placards read: ‘Jonathan, leave Anambra Alone’, 'Free and fair election is a must!’, 'Jega is worse than Iwu', ‘Sack Onukogu Now’ and  ‘No fresh election, No governor,’” the statement from Ngige’s aide added.

It explained that of the five unconscious women who were rushed to the private hospital, three regained consciousness while the two others were feared dead.

But Obi disputed the claim, saying it was concocted by the Ngige camp to draw sympathy from the public following his loss in the governorship election.

Obienyem, in a statement yesterday, said: “Journalists in Awka brought to my attention the news being circulated by Dr. Chris Ngige's Media Assistant, Mr. Okelo Madukaife, alleging that two protesting women where shot at Awka.

“I was later informed that Dr. Chris Ngige personally sent text messages to them as he did when the Uke tragedy occurred begging them to use the story.
“The story is completely fabricated and the names mentioned are non-existent, otherwise let them mention the name of the hospital.

“How can a former governor, illegal though, and now a serving senator, be an embodiment of fraud? He is desperately trying to convince people that if the election is not cancelled, there will be violence.”
The election has also caused a disagreement in the camp of the PDP as the state leadership of the party and Nwoye maintained different positions yesterday on its outcome.

The state party Chairman, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, at a press conference in Awka, while commending party members and the people of Anambra State for their peaceful and orderly conduct during the election also thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for providing adequate security and the enabling environment that made the “hitch-free election” possible.

He also condemned the attempt by the APC to discredit the governorship election.
He expressed the readiness of the PDP to participate in the supplementary election whenever INEC is ready for it.

Emeakayi said the state PDP was aligning itself with the stand of the national leadership of the party on the election and its outcome while asking INEC to complete the election and announce the winner.
He feigned ignorance that Nwoye had distanced himself from the supplementary election because of its shoddy conduct.

“I am not aware that the candidate of the party has disagreed with the outcome of the election and distanced himself from the supplementary election when INEC fixes it.
“I am not aware he said so. I am not the party. The party is the NWC and it has said we will participate in the supplementary election. The state working committee of the party met today (yesterday) towards ensuring that we participate. The candidate is not the party,” he said.

But the campaign organisation of Nwoye, faulted the party's chairman, saying it was wrong for the party not to see anything wrong with an election that was declared inconclusive, and adjudged to be marred by malpractices and irregularities.

The Director General of the campaign organisation, Mr. Osita Ezenwa, at a press conference in Awka yesterday, said their candidate had earlier pointed out that the election was flawed and should be cancelled.

“The election has been poorly conducted and what remains to be done is to cancel it and conduct a fresh election. If PDP loses from the fresh process, we will congratulate the winner; no problem, but to foist the result of a gravely flawed election on us is unacceptable,” he said.

He flayed some party officials, especially PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, for congratulating APGA in an inconclusive election when a winner was yet to emerge and wondered why he was in a hurry to do so.

“Nwoye’s name was not in the register of voters for the election. He was our candidate in the election. We call for the total cancellation of the election. Prof. Jega is a forthright person and we hope he will do what is right,” he said.

According to him, since Nwoye is the party’s candidate in the election, it will be wrong to shave his head behind his back by making pronouncements on whether he will participate in the supplementary election without consulting him.

“Before somebody makes that kind of a pronouncement, you need to consult the candidate and no consultation took place. So they are on their own. The only person who has the power to determine what step to take is the candidate.

“The election is still on ongoing and until the chief returning officer declares the results, the INEC can still cancel the election because it is a sham. It was marred by irregularities and malpractices across board.
“We don’t agree with the INEC when it said it lacked the power to cancel the election and start a fresh one,” he added.
