Thankfully dere is small hope: d resistance by executive in refusing 2 pass d inflated budjt, and d denial of further loans on d instruction of d apex bank is commendable.

Freezing of accounts: Your action is illegal, Imo govt tells Okorocha
By Okorie Uguru 22 hours 20 minutes ago
Font size:

The Imo State government has slammed the state’s governor-elect, Chief Rochas Okorocha, for instructing the state government’s bankers not honour cheques from the current government of Chief Ikedi Ohakim until after the handover on May, 29.

In a release signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Elvis Agukwe, the government described the action as illegal as order was being issued from ‘the Office of the Governor-Elect’ which does not exist in the Nigerian constitution and that the action was causing tension in the state.

According to the statement, Chief Okorocha’s order was passed to the banks through his Chief of Staff, one Prince Eze Madumere.

The state said further: "The action of Chief Okorocha is already grinding government machinery to a halt. As I talk to you now, civil servants in the state are becoming restive because the banks, evidently acting under the instruction of Chief Okorocha, have refused to release cheques for their April salaries. Yet Chief Okorocha and his handlers are sending out text messages, telling the civil servants that salaries cannot be paid because the governor used all the money for his campaigns."

The statement further said that aides of Chief Okorocha with a Senator recently went to the office of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation (I.B.C) to ransack computers and files in search of contract papers on projects handled at the corporation in the last four years."

The Imo State government described the actions as acts of perfidy and unconstitutional as there is no office of the governor-elect in the Nigerian constitution, saying the state government was unafraid of probe, but that the Chief Okocha should do that only when he assumes office on May 29.

this is funny. why can't Ohakim the simply issue a counter order, directing the banks to disregard that of Okorocha? The former is, after all, still the substantive governor.

Politics / Re: Okorocha Freezes Imo Accounts by MaiSuya(m): 12:41pm On May 13, 2011
Okorocha, until he is sworn in by State Chief judge as the substantive governor is no different from the ordinary citizen on the street, and for him to seek to prematurely exercise powers yet to be bestowed upon him is a disconcerting sign of events to come.

as for the attempt to justify the move as his way of preempting last minute grabbing by politicians on their way out, my response is why not allow the law take its course? Are there not provisions for dealing with such officials once they are stripped of their immunity?

Does the constitution state that they have a right to become a nuisance at their own risk? Where in the constitution does it state that begging is legal, and they have a right to harass and assault people for money? They should go to their homes where they have shelter's and family support around them. They were simply returned to their homes and not deported. At least they will not run the risk of death on the road ( burial at the state's expense) after being crushed by vehicles or being used for rituals. A lot of them are from Niger and should be deported.

where in the constitution is it stated that begging is not legal?

there you go.

The fact that they're beggars does not in any way stop them from being prosecuted should they break any of our laws.

They must however break the law first, before the action within the law can be taken against them.

How is this a good move?

The state has no such powers to deport Nigerians from one state to another, this is a flaggrant abuse of the Nigerian constitution and disregard for due process, if individuals involved should press charges, I am more than 80% sure they'd have claim on the government, the problem is, these people are too poor both financially and in terms of knowledge to afford a fight against the state.

The Chapter IV of the Nigerian constituition  provides an allowance for the fundamental human rights, section 41 of it states that:

Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereby or exit therefrom.

The Lagos State Government has sent back 3,029 beggars to their various states in the country and 15 foreign beggars to their country in a bid to rid the state of the nuisance they pose. The state has also begun sending children from Lagos abroad for adoption, with 152 children already adopted by foreign countries. Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru disclosed this today at a news conference at the Babauda Kaltho Press Centre, Secretariat, Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos , South West Nigeria.

Does the State government have the right to deport--if thats the right term-- a Nigerian citizen from its State? Isnt that against the constitution that guarantees freedom of movement within the country?
Health / Re: What Are Treamnst For Aids In Pregant Women? by MaiSuya(m): 9:27pm On May 12, 2011
@OP its a combination of different Antiretroviral drugs, usually three, but in some cases two depending on the trimester she is in, the viral load/CD4 count at baseline, the presence of what we call AIDS defining illness and a lot of other factors.

the aim to keep the viral load as low as possible, since this will reduce the risk of it( the virus) being transferred to the foetus, and this is possible if the drugs are commenced early.

Most heart to heart centers, even those that have capped enrollment do render PMTCT services, and priority, as I'm aware, is given to pregnant women.

bottom line: ensure the person is enrolled so that she can commence treatment asap

Health / Amalar, Others Not Banned--who by MaiSuya(m): 2:24pm On May 04, 2011
Like I stated on this thread, WHO have not recommended the ban sulphadoxine-pyrimthamine (SP) derivatives, commonly sold as amalar, fansidar, etc. These group of medicines still have an important role in play in preventing malaria during pregnancy (IPT).

Pls be informed.

Amalar, antimalaria drugs not banned -WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO), the National Malaria Control Programme and the Federal Ministry of Health, on Tuesday, said that Amalar tablets and other antimalarial drugs composed of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) have not been banned for treatment of malaria.

he drugs were said to have been allegedly banned from being used in the treatment of malaria, but this was dispelled by the WHO and the Ministry of Health at the celebration of the World Malaria Day in Abuja on Tuesday.

The two bodies denied their ban and reinstated their efficacy particularly in the malaria prevention and control in pregnancy.

The WHO Representative in Nigeria, Dr David Okello, who spoke on the issue yesterday during a press briefing to commemorate the World Malaria Day, however, stated that a ban should be placed on the usage of oral Artemisinin- based monotherapies, so as to reduce cases of drug resistance.

Dr. Okello said the best way to treat malaria was through the use of ACT (Artemisinin-based combination therapy) and not through monotherapies and added that the above drugs could be used to treat malaria effectively.

The world health body called for the removal of taxes and tariffs on malaria commodities so as to ensure that there are no hitches in the availability of the drugs.

Okello urged research institutes to be on the alert against any resistance from malaria drugs saying that the monotherapies hasten the development of resistance and called that they be phased gradually out of the market.
