my brother was married at 19 and today he and his family r well-going. Many teenagers live with their girlfriends in school and it doesn't stop them from graduating. Tbh most comments here are solely on financial establishments, and that's why I say blame it on the government. I was hoping to c issues like maturity and sense of responsibility etc Cos, I c no reason why a 18 yr old lad won't get a job to sustain his family. I c no reason why a 23 yr old man can't pay school fees and that's if we have a functioning system. No enforced labor laws. Even the minimum wage (18k/mth) isn't feasible . If u say destiny(which I don't believe in) is written by us, why then do u have to leave wealth behind for kids and deprive Dem of their freedom to rewrite their own destiny? At my age, Am more interested about life. Let them marry. Instead of living a promiscuous bachelorhood, simply marry n be responsible. In some tribes (nomads) in Nigerian the males are giving their brides so early and they live happily ever after. The fact is your goals in life which differs from everyone else's. Having a good job and plenty money isn't fulfillment or a dream to some ppl. The fact that YOU FEEL ppl sud be married after financial success isn't genial. Let's Nigerian youths enjoy their lives with their women.
Where is the maturity for a married who is still living in the family house, because he cannot afford a house rent nor build his house.

Where is the sense of responsibility when you cannot afford the basic things for your children? Rather, lazy folks will pray for their children to be successful so as to elevate their parents out of poverty. Every responsible parent will have a deliberate plan on how their children will out grow them, rather than recycling poverty from generation to generation.

Study how the Jews, Indians and Lebanese who came to Lagos less than 100 years ago, grew from poverty and blue collars jobs to millionaires and billionaires in dollars and they have succeeded growing their wealth from generation to generation.

U don't need an expert to show u that Naija is a classical example of all that's wrong without planning b4 having kids... Most peeps fail in school, business, work etc.. Next thing on their mind, let me get married and see if I could turn my fortune around.
While others are passing on wealth-folks like u are passing on hope. As my teacher would say " the rich are getting richer while the poor are having more babies" strength is not in numbers but in strategic planning'
A lot of Nigerians live in Hopeville, believing so much in miracles. No wonder Men of God who sell hope are making a lot of money from their parishioners,

in total support I corroborate your quote. But a slight thing u failed to notice is the difference between wealth and inheritance. I totally agree on leaving behind inheritance for kids, but let's no die to make it all. Life is no competition. Make what u can and enjoy life. I would want someone to define statistically how much a man must make in naira before he can marry. Bro, some ppl get married to become rich while some get even poorer after marriage. Life is a trance. Nothing is ever sure, not even wealth. If money doesn't come to u, then marriage is never made for the rich or old alone. The law states 18 or 21 am not too sure about Nigeria's constitution
What do you call wealth passed on to your children?

You cannot die living a lasting legacy and wealth for your children, provided you plan your life, you are disciplined and you inculcate the right values and attitudes in our progeny.

Getting married at a very young age and no tangible asset of yours is no competition either.

Nothing is sure, but with planning and taking responsibilities for your actions and who you want to be, you can tilt the odd to your favour. Remember our destinies are not written for us, but by us. Barack Obama

The laws states 18 years, you can advice your 18 year old brother who is still in the University to get married and start procreating immediately.

hello Mr. Educator! Google never offers anyone a certificate of education. Brings us back again to another debatable topic, are the upper middle-class ppl really described as wealthy? Don't think u r too educated Mr. Educator. Your brain is full of Google and not substantial knowledge of profound fact. I said and will say it again, Mr Williams Gates sr. never left WEALTH for Bill Gates, but he (Bill) made wealth. Go back to google and do your research and date it back to Bill's history.
Having a degree doesn't make u a champ, defending it does.
An upper middle class that can comfortable afford to send his child to Harvard can be described s wealthy. Bill Gates parents were wealthy enough to send their children to private elementary and high schools. It takes a family with pedigree and real wealth to give his child, the type of good head start Bill received from his parents. Members of the upper middle class and above represents just 5% of the American family.
Even Bill Gate had to consolidate on his foundation, maybe that was why he got married at 39.

There is no way you can amass wealth for yourself alone, you amass wealth and make money by solving problems at a profit. Do you know the number of workers employed by Dangote, they are over 40,000. Do you know the number of indirect jobs created by Dangote's businesses? The are in hundreds of thousands. Do you know the number of small shareholders in Dangote's businesses? They are over 100,000. Do you know the billions of Naira paid by Dangote's workers as taxes to government coffer?
The guy has succeeded in creating opportunities and possibilities and you think he is making money all alone.
Some of these workers, contractors and suppliers are millionaire via the dream and acumen of Dangote.

we have seen that you have made it, but pls don't judge anyone for his choice to be married. Rich or poor, God watches us all. The main thing is to serve God n not to amass material wealth for yourself. The Bible said, "marry n multiply", and there's no where in the Bible where it says " amass wealth ". We all come empty to go empty. Bill Gates father never had wealth, but his son made it. Gathering wealth for ur kids does not ensure their lives. All is vanity. Gathering wealth or poverty for our kids does not ensure their lives, but equipping them with the right attitudes on how to make, manage and multiply money.

The problem is not with the inheritance left for our children, but giving them the right values and mindset about money. Don't forget that the bible says a good man lives an inheritance for his children.

When your child has the right values about life and money, the inheritance left for him or her will give him a good head start.

His parents were not poor, they belonged to upper middle class in American, which is the top 5 percentile of the American family by net-worth.

Bill Gates father was equally a philanthropist. The maternal grandfather of Bill Gate was also the President of a Bank

Gates was born in Seattle, Washington in an upper middle class family. He is the son of William H. Gates, Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates. Gates' ancestral origin includes English, German, and Scots-Irish.

Thanks for the reply, your points are clearly aligned with OP's reasons (early Birthing & women Fertility clock) which are though reasonable but not compulsory because everything is now achieveable with convenience & cash in hand. It all boils down to individual preference. My neighbour (east Indian) married in her
early twenties after college and started her Nursing Practice but surprisingly they mutually chose not to expand their family till date. They both seem very happy.

Honestly, I'll pick your last two points over the first 6 100times grin Raising family and struggling to make ends meet is no child's play especially when you have specific taste of lifestyle.

Have a great weekend . It's a beautiful warm & breezy day here.

Holá J, we dey 0, thanks for asking. Just hayfever dey worry us one kind, but it's easing somewhat. How far with the loved ones?

To start, I said all things being equal. So assuming there are no questions of readiness or maturity - which are not necessarily age-dependent anyway.

1. It gives you more leeway in terms of when you start a family - older couples are under more pressure to have children soon. Giving you less time to simply enjoy each other without parenting cares.

2. It actually gives you more scope in the actual size of your family. The younger you marry, the more you are able to have - if you so desire. One of my cousins has six - only because he married at 24 to someone a bit younger. It's unlikely if you marry later.

3. If also forestalls/reduces the risk of fertility issues, and gives more time to deal with them if they do arise.

4. A big one for me is it matures men quick-time. Makes them more focused and responsible - studies show that married men tend to earn more. A marriage dividend so to speak.

5. More energy and time with and for your kids. Before and after they are grown. Which gives you your time together back when you are still a relatively young couple.

6. More likely to have the generation before you around to help, support and advise - and for longer.

I do see some potential benefits in marrying older, but in sum, I don't see them outweighing the advantages of doing it younger.

1. Probably more settled and possibly wealthier
2. Possibly more appreciative and ready to devote time to family and embrace "family man" things

What are your thoughts?

Unfortunately all things are not equal for most people in Nigeria and there is a lot of uncertainty. I have seen unemployed guys getting married at the age of 26 in Lagos, this is a guy living in a room in the family house. He believed getting married will open doors of blessings to him, the marriage did not last 3 years before the young lady moved out.

I don't support the idea of getting married immediately after getting a job, one needs to save and invest some of his earnings in income generating assets and then getting married after working for about 2 years or more. This will cushion the effect of any eventuality or uncertainty.

A cousin of mine got married almost immediately after getting a job with the defunct Oceanic bank in 2007, he was barely employed for less than 18 months before losing his job in 2008. The guy went home with nothing because he had car loan debt to pay his employer and his wife was also jobless. He traveled to South Africa for greener pasture in 2009, living the wife and daughter in Nigeria for the past 6 years. The wife and daughter visited me 2 weeks ago for assistance,

i do not discredit yoyr point of view, but I c where u r coming from. Undoubtedly, you are from one of the few privileged low middle-class. I am as privileged as u, but the average Nigerian man isn't. And those are who I represent more. The comparison is way too vast. I wish ur ideas could thrive in Nigeria, but sad I'd rather be honest with u, it can't work in Naija. If u like hold workshops, trainings n seminars all over the country, still we need govt interference. A vivid example is INNOSON motors. Dangote is successful today cos of govt policies. We can only try, but the bottomline is govt.
Am i really privileged, graduating with a poor grade and did not get a good job. I knew no one was going to employ me, so I started investing in the stock-market and real-estate about 20 years ago and thank God for the foresight. If I got married immediately after graduation without consolidating on my foundation ie investments I will not be where I am today.

It depends on your imagination and horizon, when I was a salary earner I have businesses that employed 4 people. 30 million creative and productive minds with can do mindset in Nigeria can decide to create 2 jobs each. In case you do not know micro, small and medium businesses are the solution to the current rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

I worked all my life in small businesses, but I give God the glory for my modest achievements. well said! Your points are not wrong at all, but would better serve in a Democratic setting. Are we truly Democratic? Does the average man even no his constitutional rights? Will the average man striking rock to make water ensure steadiness in the populace? Why does the average man need to vote if his survival and security depends on him alone? Talking about education, u asked of the essence of education if we can't solve our problems. Well, you will need to upgrade yourself on the percentage of uneducated ppl in Nigeria. U also need to ask the quality of education given to the said educated ones. I wish your ideas could work, but let me remind u that we have tried it for decades and we are still sinking in the mud. How much longer? Fela is a great man today cos his messages hit straight to the head and not the tail. Your contribution without a government policy cannot stand time, and it cannot reflect the generic objective of a nation. Bro, we are educated, we have tried, we are not letting up, but yet there is still a long way ahead. Governmental policies and programs can help us get there n in no time. Mention a countries that got positive transformation without strict governmental directives. Are we talking China, Japan, Singapore, US or France? It takes a leader to lead creative minds. Most of our intellectuals thrive elsewhere cos of better policies. How many inventors have had a breakthrough here in Nigeria? How many businesses have nosedived to the rock here in Nigeria? How many businesses have got bailed out? Your individual input requires a collective input.
The earlier you see yourself as the MD/CEO of Me Myself and I incorporated the better. In the past, people expected manna from heaven but now we need to make our own manna. There is a saying that heaven helps those who help themselves, I think you really need to renew your mind it will do you and your children a whole lot of good. Live and plan your life and that of your children as if no government existed.

The purpose of our education is to equip one with the skills, tools and attitudes to be a productive member of the society. It is lazy minds that will complain about the quality of the education received in Nigeria. The internet has made the world a global village all you need to improve mind is just a click. We have people who graduated from Nigerian Universities who are making the nation proud in their post-graduate studies in foreign universities, while some are only complaining about the quality of our education.

The percentage of educated Nigerians may be low, but those of us who are privileged to receive University education should see it as a call to create opportunities and possibilities rather than waiting to be partakers of the dreams of other people. My brother as a man thinketh so he is and will be. You need to change your mindset and values. Where you will be in 10 years will be determined by the type of friends you move with and the type of books you read.
Most Nigerian graduates may have the skills and tools, but what is lacking is the attitude. I will advise you to read a book attitude is everything by Keith Harrel.

When 20% of Nigerians are creative, we shall see the impact on the life of the remaining 80%.
..................................................................................................................................................................................................

NB. Yours truly graduated with 3rd class from UNILAG in 1997, nobody was ready to employ me but had to work as a teacher. I was also out job twice for a minimum of 6 months on each occasion.

Fast forward to 2015, I have 2 houses in Lagos and the 3rd one is almost completed. A sum of N1 million was also invested for each of my sons in 2014, this should have grown to a minimum of N2.6 million in 9 years at a minimum return of 10% provided I did not add to the investment, I will surely add to the investment every year meaning the value would have grown higher than N2.6 million in 2024.By this time the eldest will be in the University and the youngest will be writing his SSCE.

But I'd rather he'd just keep shut than come out to say all of that at this time when we do not have a defined direction for the economy. Maybe I'm just been selfish ,you cant blame me tho; I have millions in the the stock market and the quicker the market recovers the better- and alterations like those aren't going to help.
You are not the only one with millions in the stock-market, no matter how gloomy the direction of the economy is I don't see the ASI going down to 20,000 and if it does some of us will buy more. Some of us were fully invested in the market and also made more investments when the market was rougher than this, so I do not see this period as an exception.

Many poor folks usually intentionally write letter to poverty and geometric poverty cuz they keep doing things that further sink them down the hole.

I am not the govt. I refuse to accept that. Don't fool us with education. Reality check confirms that the masses know nothing in the govt. How am I the govt when I don't no how much my president is worth? How are we the govt when we have no access to information? How are we the govt. When we can't tell how the leaders get to their positions? How are we the govt. When we can't pay ourselves for over 6 months. How are we the govt. And we don't know where our loots go? When we can't influence decisions even when we protest. We can't hear our cries and we can't help ourselves. Get it clear, we were only taught that in school but practically the govt is vastly different from the masses. The fact that 1 million Nigerians could make their way thru poverty should not exclude your mind to the fact that over 170 million ppl do not have the same opportunities or endowments as the others. Do u know the number of disabled ppl in ur own society? Will u expect them to hustle like you? Do u know our IQ are different? Do u ever stop to realize that most ppl have tried and failed and need assistance to try again? Brother, Nigerians are not lazy. You can type words on NAIRALAND cos u can spell. Have u pondered that most of ur creative write-ups couldn't make it to some ppl who can't read? Brother, some eggs don't require same heat to incubate, but no egg can hatch in the fridge.
Our parents have made the govt to believe that without them we can survive and today we the children pay the price. They say don't dwell on what the govt will do for u, but what u will do for the govt. Yet they tell us that we are the govt. Isnt that delusional? Ppl who can't get their pension will blame themselves? Our educational system is decayed we blame ourselves? No ministries to see to the need of the ppl is our fault? It took Bill Gates to vaccinate us, it took world bank to distribute mosquito nets. It took America to beef up our security.
The govt owes us what they included as the constitutional rights of the nation. Don't fool us to thinking we are to blame. Encourage transparency in the govt n accountability
Who are the people that voted in our current leaders? People will definitely get the type of leaders and government they want. Nothing stops the people to vote out any leader or government that cannot meet their aspirations. You and I are the government, and the people can sack any leader and government whenever they think enough is enough.

Nigerians and most especially the youths need to change our mindset and values. I am a realist, and the reality on ground shows that more than ever before our destinies are written by us and not by the government, economy, family nor employers.

Ask yourself, while we are complaining about the government and the economy we still have hardworking, focused, intelligent and proactive Nigerians who are creating opportunities and possibilities. I think rather than looking at the problem we should think of how to solve the problems at a profit.

What is the essence of our education, if we do not have problem solving skills. Our education should give us the skills, tools and attitudes that should make us productive members of the society. Someone defined knowledge, as what we know which gives us an edge.

1. ON EARNING:
Never depend on single income. Make investment to create a second chance.

3. ON SAVINGS:
Do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving.

6. ON EXPECTATIONS:
Honesty is a very expensive gift. Do not expect it from cheap people.

7. IF YOU are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present. Past is a waste paper. Present is a newspaper and future is a question paper.

listen to yourself. What is Ur point based on? Poverty or marriage? These r two different things. Blame the govt for poverty not the individual. We don't have to suffer all the time for the sins of the govt. God himself said marry n multiply, what r u holding on for? At 25 isn't a man supposed to have his BSc and a job? At 25 are most men not living away from family? At 25 most men have lived with or dated many women.
Even the law states 18 or 21 if am not mistaken. There's nothing holding a. Man from marriage at 25. By our school system at 17 latest one side have his SSCE and by 22 latest a degree and 24 latest his masters. PHD? which isn't damn on job market demand. travel and see bro. Your mates are all married and done raising kids. Our parents say marry early, I still support that. Is silly a man in his 60ies raising kids in sec school. That's why most men reduce their ages to stay in active service when they sud be seeking retirement. I've seen many ppl who waited till their late 40ies to settle down still heading for divorce. No marriage is safe from breakup if u like wait a hundred years
#LETTHEYOUNGMARRY
I believe our destinies are written by us and not for us. Because of this, I have refused to blame my parents, employer, family or government for my condition. I think adults should be solely responsible for their actions and in-actions. I lost my job twice between 1998 and 2010 but that did not give me the right to blame my colleagues, employer, economy or government for my job losses. I see myself as the MD/CEO of Me, Myself and I Incorporated.

But I think every Nigerian who is lucky to graduate by 25 years should work hard and pray to settle down between 2 years to 10 years after graduation.
Getting married in 40s and above is not too good.

When you talk about more income, I dont really understand that. Let me clarify with these assumptions. For equality sake, we will assume equal opportunity at age 24. Assuming Mr. A and Mr. B finished school at age 24 and at 25, they got a job at the same firm paying same salary, and they grew in ranks at same time. if Mr. A decides to marry at 26 and Mr. B decides to marry at 40, I dont see how Mr. B will have more income. Mr. A will use his early first small salary and be buying mainly pamper and maybe just paying for kindergerten, while Mr. B will be saving, if he wont be chasing women up and down. At age 40, when both should be attaining managerial level, Mr. A children will be finishing scecondary school, while Mr. B will use bulk of his money to throw a lavish wedding, because I cant marry a 40 year old man and do a managing wedding (=shame) and also, he will start buying pampers from what he has saved over the years. By 50, Mr. A children is out of university and Mr. B will still be attending PTA meeting at primary school. Qualiyty of aged sperm should also be considered. Younger sperm produces smarter kids. maybe Mr. B children might eventually graduate with 3rd class
Both of them will have the same income, but one will have more investments than the other provided the guy who married late is smart. Mr B would have also invested in other qualifications that will aid his career growth.

I believe a young man should have a good foundation in form of investments and savings before getting married, this foundation will act as a defence when uncertainties occur.

I got married in my 30s, I have lost jobs twice between the time I graduated and the time I got married. But because of my foundation ie income generating investments and savings, I realised I came out stronger after every job loss.

You caused the problem. U made him stylish and trendy. My sister don't you know when u make a bush man attractive he will start baiting bigger bush meat.

The dude before ur marriage was never attractive to ladies because of his bush way of doing things and the only reason he felt u married him was out of pity. If u had left him the way he was with loads of ANKARA HE will not fit into the settings and class he just found himself.

Omo oko is now feeling like lagos boy.

My advise. Deny him sex, give him good food, leave him to himself, pray and deny him sex.

Never look into his phone, Never ask him why he is late, pretend like all is normal and deny him sex.

Always look attractive, play cool Christian songs when you hear his car sound.

Deny him sex, show more care and pray hard. May God help u
Are you sure they are still having sex together, I doubt if sex denial is the solution to this problem. I know a couple who have not had sex together in close to 2 years.
The wife denied the guy sex for 6 months, when the wife is now interested in sex because she realised that sex denial did not work for her, but unfortunately the husband is no longer interested in having sex with his wife or is it flat mate again.

Any fund you want to put your money consider how easy it is to exit such fund...........So many fund are good on paper even famous ones and when it comes to liquidating your asset, then they will start asking for unneccessary documents......................
Beware of any investment that is not regulation by SEC. Customers of BGL Securities that have billions of Naira trapped can be linked to investments that are good on paper but SEC does not have oversight functions on such investments.

Is it possible to buy stocks using for example XYZ stock brokers and Tell DFT stock brokers to help you process transfer forms for the stocks you bought with XYZ stock brokers. Secondly if I have 10 stocks being managed by same registrar, if i have my signature on one of the stocks with the registrar, do i need to process transfer forms for all the rest 9 before i can submit Edividend form.
If you have 10 stocks that are managed by the same registrar, and you maintain the same name, address and CHN for all the stocks, you should not have a problem. Provided you have your signature for one of the stocks with the registrar, you do not need to process transfer forms for the remaining 9 stocks.

I got my Afriland, APR and UBA Capital via e-dividend, even-though I did not apply for e-dividend for those stocks from the registrars, but I have a subsisting mandate that my UBA Plc dividend should be paid into my account.
