you could have said you disagree instead of saying not true. What i wrote was my experience and it was not even up to 10mins. The interview process too in Nigeria is typically less than 10mins. So i know what i am saying, its just to let whoever wants to apply not feel entitled because you are a canadian PR.

Are you comparing a Nigerian national to a Canadian PR when trying to get a U.S visa ? Your experience isn't reality though.

I was telling myself the same thing ...
But then again, you need connection or information to know what to do.
In other words, you need to mingle with the right people.

No. It's the ignorance and arrogance most Nigerians have when coming abroad; specifically to the U.S. They also buy the bullsh!t "American dream" which is just that, a dream. When they realize abroad is not a banana republic and laws are followed and enforced here, they end up being out of status and asking for help on nairaland. I'm curious to hear her story on how and why she let herself and children go out of status.

Please stop giving out false information about ICE being called to deport her and her family.

As long as she and her kids remain out of anything of crime that will lead to any kind of being arrested then she will not be bothered by ICE.

Anyone who calls ICE on her will just be wasting their time. The ICE in the US works in a different way than what is portrayed or assumed.

With that, I will not encourage her to remain without legal status in the US even if getting deported by ICE is far fetched.

However, your suggestion to her to use the US-Canadian border crossing route will also have be considered and done very carefully. And if she is forced to go that route when other options are fruitless I'll advise that she and her kids make such journey across the border during the early summer months.

False. ICE has arrested 37, 000 non criminals, a 145% increase from 2016. Trump has given ICE far greater power under his administration than Obama did. ICE has stopped prioritizing catching and deporting violent criminals over non criminals. It's now fair game for anyone. This is common knowledge. Furthermore, with the South Americans attempting to cross into the U.S, Trump has given border officers/soldiers permission to use lethal force if they have too to prevent them from entering. I suggest you do some research and stop passing out false information yourself. This administration is not one to play with when it comes to being illegal. I agree she should enter Canada during the summer, but will she have time ?

Note that it is not automatic that you will be given US visa as a permanent resident. You will still be subjected to the same questioning process like we used to experience back in naija. What is certain is that if your visa is approved you will be given 10 years.

Not true. Unless if you have something in your background or they feel you're shady. On average it takes 10 min. Show proof of employment along with no criminality, and you'll get your 10 year visa within 10 min.

Pls for those with a PR card already, are you allowed entry into the US without visa for a short period?

Wondering if to renew my US visa in Nigeria (interview required) or wait till i reach Canada. Heard the rejection rate is very high now. Pls advise.

You're part of the 1st world now. Wait till you reach Canada. The high rejection rate doesn't apply to Canadian citizens or PR.

Thank you for this response.
Carleton University. I plan on living off campus.

You can find shared accommodation off campus for 500-600 hundred per month (own room, kitchen shared). Or you can get a 1 bedroom for yourself for 1k plus per month. Transport you could get a student discount for maybe $80 per month I think. Those who use the bus in the Ottawa area can answer that. As for food, you should have access to the food bank which would reduce your food costs. Hope this helps.

From wikipedia. This is how his story goes:

Olubankole Wellington[1] (born 27 March 1981[2]), known by the stage name Banky W, and credited in film as Banky Wellington, is a Nigerian singer, rapper and actor. Life and career Early life and career beginnings Banky W was born in the United States to Nigerian parents. His family moved back to Nigeria when he was
five years old. He started singing at a young age in the church choir. He schooled in Lagos for his primary
and secondary education and returned to further his tertiary education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York on a scholarship. He started his record label E.M.E in 2002 while still studying. After moving to
Nigeria in 2009, he established the label in Lagos. He signed artists like Niyola, Shaydee, Skales and Wizkid to the label at the time. His breakthrough debut studio album, Back in the Building was released in 2005.[3] He wrote the first theme song of Etisalat Nigeria titled "0809ja for life".[4]

Banky w has never been poor. Don't let him deceive you

Banky like davido are Nigerians by convineance. These are people who have western passport but claim Nigeria only when it benefits them. How did banky parents afford to go to America, and eventually having him there, paying for his medical delivery in dollars if they were poor ? Why don't banky and davido renounce their American citizenship and only keep their naija passport ? Nigerians by convineance like banky don't really care about Nigeria.

I don’t know about Whites not ignoring themselves. I am not a white man and I really just don’t care about them. I get to read about this competition alot from Nairaland - what competition? On what level? Except you are part of the super rich that can employ lawyers and accountant to assist you avoid taxes, then I can understand. Canada is a leveler. The taxation brings everybody to equilibrium.

Hence anybody with the mindset of this Competition that I get to read a lot is deceiving themselves. You can virtually afford anything.

If a black man sees another black man as THE COMPETITION, that black man is insecure and uncomfortable with his own skin. This is my own opinion.

Some companies may look to hire, keep, or promote their token black employee, but there are 2 black employees including yourself. That other "black brother" will do everything in their power to belittle you and your work, to make sure you get sacked or don't get that promotion. A black police officer will go to a black neighborhood and harass the citizens there, even more than his fellow white officers, in order to get a promotion and become a Sergeant. These are small examples.

But a white will never ignore another white because he is white.
When in the midst of black people, a white will see another white as an allied.
But in the midst of white people, some black would look at other black as competition.

I can weigh in. To begin with if someone smiles at me and says hello, I will do the same regardless of their race. It's simply the human thing to do. I've also went out of my way to help newcomers to Canada, from relatives to strangers, regardless of what race or country they come from. Hence why I'm on this thread. But if I see a black stranger I'll say hi/hello but that's it. Unless I was introduced to them by someone else, or you're a colleague and I've gotten to know you well enough to trust you. Other than that, forget it. Why ? You said it. Blacks in North America view other blacks as competition. The co-workers who have stabbed me in the back and have attempted or gotten me sacked were black Africans. White people are 2 faced and have no loyalty to me as a black man, I know. I keep them at arms length and know my way around them. But black Africans ? If I don't know you, stay in your lane and hi/bye is all you get. Unless we get to know each other and I start to trust you. The things what blacks would do here to advance their career, objective, etc to other blacks is sickening. Lastly, in this part of the world, a lot of people suffer from mental health issues, or they just want to be left alone. It's not by force. It doesn't mean anything negative if someone isn't out-going smiling and saying hi to everyone.

I am not here to discourage him but the papers issue in abroad these days are tough. He needs paper to work. He can live well in Nigeria with 7 million than CAD $25000 because you have to factor in expenses like rent and government taxes.

Rent is free in naija ? Nobody pays taxes in naija ? He doesn't have to factor anything in naija ?

There are immigrant PhD holders, doctors, MSc holders who engage in unskilled jobs in Canada and every other western country. If you earn as much as 7 million/year in Nigeria, you are equal to what the average 'upper class' earn overseas. I would advice you take a few months of leave, travel and see things for yourself. If you really want to migrate, try to ensure you migrate directly into a job that you are already qualified in. Don't get sucked into the rat race of engaging in unskilled low pay jobs, you are much better than that.

If you do emigrate and work within your profession, you could earn $100,000/year. You will be taxed at circa 40%. You will pay rent/mortgage on whatever is left of it. If you factor in family expenses, car expenses etc, you will end up with a pittance to save every month. That's when you will remember that the N7 million/year you earned in Nigeria offers you a better quality of life than someone who earns $100,000/year overseas. The only advantage overseas offers for people who earn that much in Nigeria is security of life.

Well said. Because in Nigeria everything is free. You'd be able to save more there.

Nothing being worse than being a Nigerian with Naija mentality, Nigerians talk ill about their country whereas there are other countries worse than Nigeria but because their citizens cherish their country and wants to do anything to make the society a sane one and improve their standard of living make a difference. I’m outside the country also but my mind is made up after few years of working here, I’m going back to Nigeria to give back to the society, establish a business, it might not survive at first but with determination I hope it will be a success, that’s how it supposed to be but our Naija mentality is about desperation of making it big within short period of time and leaving the country for good. Hadn’t been the citizens of those countries we re moving to were also migrating and not coming back to add value to their communities, there won’t be anywhere to visit. I was discussing with my friend who is a PR holder in Canada this weekend and she said she just learnt that the Canadian Government pays its citizens that are children $650 CAD monthly and that she was told of a Nigerian Lady (who gave birth to triplet and returned to Nigeria) that receives $1950 CAD monthly for her triplets from the Canadian Government. My friend confirmed that the Canadian Government pays her son who is not a Canadian citizen some money every month.

@Hotstepper, please is this accurate i.e. that Canadian Government pays its citizens that are children certain sums every month? Because this could be one of the immediate benefits that the VO was frowning at and referring to as an abuse of the system.

Thanks.

It's true. Money is given to your child along with many other benefits. But I think the mother or parent(s) now has to be living in Canada. I doubt they'd be sending her dollars while in naija. I think they've changed that rule. As for the son, unless he's at least a PR and living in Canada, I can't see the gov't giving him money. Why would they ?

I am already learning some of the courses in the program I plan to go to school for (web development) online, but I have no experience or certificate so studying will not be really difficult, I hope.

I feel you're trying to run before learning how to walk. As a result, you're bound to make some mistake. I'm trying to figure out why you're in a rush to enter school so quickly ? You're a PR or will be. I'd enter the country, stay in your AnB until you secure a place in peel region. Register your child in school while you get a job. ANY JOB. Even if na McDonalds. Then sit down, conduct your research on what benefits you're entitled too, then make a game plan. Boss 13 said : "In Canada, more Particularly Ontario - you need to ask. If you don’t ask, nobody would direct you." That was my biggest mistake back in the days. Not doing my full research to know what was available to me, to make my life easier. Just some benefits:

1. Mature students like yourself may be available for free school

https://www.moneysense.ca/news/new-osap-rules/

2. Your child will have their medical and now prescription drugs covered by the Ontario government. So you know their medication treatment/ needs is fully covered while you get yourself together.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/medications-now-free-for-anyone-under-25-in-ontario-1.3742407

3. As low income (depending on your salary) you may be eligible for subsidized housing. Meaning you pay rent according to your income to help with the financial burden of housing.

https://www.peelregion.ca/housing/apply-for-subsidy/

4. If you're low income, your child's dental care would be covered by peel region (you region you'll be living in). OHIP will cover eye care, and peel region should cover whatever OHIP doesn't.

https://www.peelregion.ca/health/dental-health/fin-help4kids.htm

https://www.optom.on.ca/OAO/Patients/Medical_Coverage/OAO/Patients/Medical_Coverage.aspx

As a low income your child would be able to register for sports for free. On top of all these benefits, you'll be getting money every month from the government, would get a tax break claiming your child on your taxes, etc. I would cool down. Spend a year working while researching all these benefits, then make a comprehensive plan that would benefit you and your child not only for today, but for the future. You and your child are assets here, aka future tax payers. The government will never let your needs go unmet. I've met single mothers in medical school surviving and being successful in school. You're situation is not even that serious.

Goodness, all one has to do is google these easily accessible answers to these questions. Childcare subsidy ( I think you mean daycare ?) is different and goes by your income. Most, if not all benefits in Canada is usually determined by your income. Except for things like education or healthcare.

We are not here to get taught on governance or criticism or lack thereof. No one neglected the asian woman that racked up that enormous bill, it is totally wrong and one of the reasons the visa officers get skeptical. And yes it is not our business what Canadians decide upon, but in this point in time, jus soli is legal in Canada so whether the people living in Canada are happy or not about it then let them change the constitution accordingly and obviously this will not be a topic of discussion if that happens. But until then. Another point here the poster or couple of posts prior visa adjudication is subjective, and this particular officer showed that exactly that he is not one of the people that like jus soli. As @mslala said, one officer might refuse you visa and with the same documentations, another officer will grant you the same class of visa. They have absolute power to exercise.

P.S. The rejection that you mentioned there is standard because the officer knows he cannot state that this person wants to give birth in Canada so I will not give them visa, then trust me that officer will be put on audit and possibly suspension because it is not against the Canadian law. SO its a normal template that they will have to give reason for a refusal according to the law and they hide behind the financial and asset things. I can tell you that I know of a serious rich man, with over 20 properties that each property is worth at least 200,000 US dollars and other assets that can amount to no less than 2,000,000 US Dollar and he has a business that turns over easily 200-300k USD on average each month and this individual has extensive travel history that use to travel every other week but has since stopped because of age. And guess what, he was refused Canada visa twice.

As they say, there's both side of the story then the truth. You're only hearing this woman's narrative/side of the story. I'm sure if the officer came on this board, his side of the story would be different. The fact people assume she's automatically telling the truth because she's a regular here is comical. How many Nigerians who met requirements to get a visa, got one, and never returned ? Do you know about the crisis with Nigerians happening at the Canadian border now ? The visa officer has to take everything into account, even if you meet all requirements on paper. And I'm sure the federal government has told visa officers to reduce the visa's given out to Nigerians. They even begged the trump administration to do the same, with Nigerians now claiming refugee in Canada left and right coming from the U.S. But I have to repeat, whether it's right, legal, etc to do so in Canada, it's nobody's business but Canadian citizens. If Canadians aren't complaining, which they are not, nothing will happen. Everyone in naija can bone their face all they want. Foreign governments don't respect Nigerians, because at the end of the day, their government doesn't either. But lastly, she can easily appeal, and if he did do something wrong, it will be found without a doubt. Canada is not a banana republic and laws are followed/enforced. If the visa officer is bias/corrupted, it will inevitably be found in an investigation. Though it'll take a while as the investigation would be lengthy.

My 2 cents

You may agree or disagree but its obvious that some of these border officials that you claim aren't fools are actual fools. You cannot just discriminate against someone because you personally feel what they are doing is wrong when in actual fact it is not wrong that's why its in the constitution. If the government of Canada feels this is wrong and wants to exercise the views of its citizens, then they should do so at the polling station and adjust the constitution accordingly. And for your information the officer that refused that particular lady is a prejudicial POS, as if you read her originally post, the refusal never stated anything about it being for the birth. So that alone should let you know that its personal and discriminatory from the officer. He/She is just bitter.

She got rejected for "financial assets, purpose of travel etc". Nobody knows her true financial situation but herself and the visa officer. Furthermore, this woman is clearly telling her side of the story. Last I know being rejected for financial reason is part of the law. Just because you feel she got discriminated doesn't mean she did, nor does it make your feelings factual. But I like how everyone is ignoring the Asian woman who racked up over 300k in hospital bill. Maybe Canada now wants people to have extra money in case the pregnancy doesn't go accordingly ? But like I said, it's not ones business to decide or try to figure out what the Canadian people want to do or agree upon. Nigerians like to criticize other peoples government, but won't open their mouths and stand up to theirs at home most of the time. Even if it is discrimination, what will you do ? You'll still stand in line to get visa tomorrow.

I still cannot understand how the presence of a patient at a hospital other than her own country’s, especially when she is in the country legally and has fulfilled all requirements to be in same country, can be seen as hinderance and unlawful in the eyes of its citizens.

This is same as saying that irrespective of your reason for being a foreigner in a country, when you fall ill then the citizens, sorry the government should see you as disturbing the peaceful tally sequence of the medical circle for its citizens. This is absurd.

If every country’s was to have this same view about visitors to their country for tourism, business or other reasons accessing their medical facility, people will prefer returning to their country when they fall ill abroad rather than face this kind of unbelievable rejection.

This is not about citizen by birth haters, it is bigger than that. If this type of prejudice is allowed to fester it will one day result in ordinary tourist being rejected at hospitals because a majority think that their presence prevents a citizen from having his time at the doctors.

As if taking a citizens turn at the hospital is the same as taking his turn at the voting booth. Well this is just me saying I may still be wrong.

Well she wasn't granted a visa. But it's not for you to understand what the people of Canada has decided to do. This is what they're trying to avoid. Guess who's on the hook for this mothers bill ? The tax payer. Besides you're only hearing this posters side of the story. These border officers aren't fools.

I would like to say that you did the right thing by declaring your intention and you also tried with the answers you gave the officer. His judgement was skewed towards how he personally felt about the citizenship by birth law and not what the law actually allows one do lawfully. He is not there to enforce the laws of the "haters of the citizenship by birth group". He was supposed to look at your visa application without a biased mind according to the laws governing birthing by internationals.

How is it government assistance, when a bill for international patients will be applied.
How are you denying service time to other Canadians when its time paid for. Sheeesh

The laws governing the issue of birthing abroad and others should always supersede other views even if they are in the majority.
An officer of the law should not let his personal views cloud his judgement.

If he had an atom of judicial temperament he would not have denied you this visa and funny enough grant someone who is not as honest same visa and end up meting her in a Canadian hospital as an international patient for birthing.

If he did meet this dishonest person, there is nothing he can do but squeeze his face in disapproval of his own prejudice that made it possible for the dishonest patients to be in Canada to the annoyance of his haters of the citizenship by birth group

Whether it's time paid for or Not, her being in the bed, a Canadian citizen could be in that same bed. That's the visa officers point. Don't agree with the decision though.

So house, I don't have any idea about Canada and I'm very sure God willing, I will leave Nigeria after my service. I just need someone to tell me things I need to know about Canada, is the Masters link very sure? What's the goodies that come with masters students? Like how much should I budgeting?

Thanks

Try skilled worker first. If you can't get that one then go with masters. Coming as a PR would speed things up and make things cheaper for you.

Landed seniors I'm still awaiting your response to the question I asked about which bank in Canada do you advise one to open account with?

It's all the same. I personally go with TD because they open later than most banks, and are usually open on Sundays too. But most people do online banking so who cares. But products are all the same really.
