Hello Fam,

Thanks for all the useful info posted her for landed immigrants. After reading the thread, I realise that so many good paying opportunities are available to engineers, skilled labour, physicians, nurses etc.
What is the fate of bankers? Looking at posted salaries on glass door and the likes, you realise that annual salaries of some sales role is just btw 40-50k, whereas people in other fields are looking at over 100k annually.
We can't all be engineers and processors. Is there anyone with banking background that has successfully build a career here in Canada, making six digit figures that can share tips with some of us.

Thank you

Don't focus on salary. Focus on the cost of living. The bankers I know make around 60k with around 4 years experience. They also get amazing benefits like stock options and pension plans. The ones I know that make 6 figures have an MBA. They're also in Toronto.

Thank you so much for this. I'm at a crossroad now. I am scheduled to begin an M.Eng in Civil Engineering program(co-op option), needed that to help with the Canadian education and Canadian experience. After this, I was hoping to get an E.I.T position but since I can earn more in an alternate career, I am really beginning to reconsider.

Do your education but have an open mind. You may never end up using that education is my point. Just do what makes sense, but having an education in your back pocket can never be a bad thing.

just surprised? I would say I am stupefied cheesy

I really would like to know all the details of that "different means". My interest is to go where the money is, or at least where the pay is commensurate to the stress and challenge. Title and status is not my turf. I wasn't born an Engineer, I chose to be, so I can as well choose to redeploy my skill set and energy to an alternative career, even retrain, if it turns out to be more rewarding.

Whatever your employer has agree to pay you, is your value period. If your employer feels I need to pay you X amount of dollars in order for me to be able to make X amount of dollars in profit, then that's what determines your value. That's one of the means. So for example when I worked in Northern Alberta in the oilfields, I got a professional drivers license and was hired to deliver fuel and lube to different departments on site. Which they needed to accomplished their objective of course. I was one of those guys working the 12 hour shifts salford explained. Except I worked 7 days straight, and got 7 days off. I would also get overtime after 8 hours each day, and each overtime day, the full 12 hour shift was OT. I grossed 160k one year, though I took a lot of overtime when asked. While most people would be shocked how much I made to haul and deliver fuel around, remember my company easily made millions off my services/"labor". What's paying a man 160k when you can make millions off his services ?

That's what I mean different means determine ones salary not a fancy degree. Mind you my former company didn't care if I could read or write, as long as I was able to deliver the fuel and lube around. So people coming here shouldn't get caught up on fancy degrees. Some of those "uneducated laborer" make more money than some will ever make.

Wages vary by employer and province. Canada is a unique country when it comes to wages. I can't really say if techs earn more or engineers earn more. You could have technologists earning lower or higher than engineers in private firms or government firm. Some reasons are given below:

1. If in a government role, Technologists and trades people are unionized and have a contract they renew every two or three years. This contracts increases their wages by a certain percentage every year. The union also tries to get them a sweet spot on the tax bands.

2. Both government and private firms techs technologists and tradesperson) are not placed on monthly wage like engineers. They are usually placed on hourly wages. Some work a 12 hours week e.g power engineering technologists and instrumentation technologists that are found in oil sands operations, hospitals, power generating stations etc, Civit techs in summer season (road maintenance). This factor also leads to enormous amount of overtime hours.

3. Some employers would recruit engineers, trades people and technologists for the same job e.g substation maintemance, and would offer same wage to them.

4. Engineers salary are low when they are in- training, but it starts increasing when they become PEng.

5. It's easier for engineers to land management roles than techs. Problem is that management roles doesnt always equal more money except you get towards the vp/director level in firms. Note that techs can also get to that level, but you would usually find more engineers in management positions especially in private firms.

These reasons are from my experience in Western Canada (Sask and Alberta). Natural resource extraction has somehow created an anomaly on how much people earn or how wages are structured. Payscale/wages might be very different in Ontario, Quebec or other parts of Canada.

Well said. The inflated salaries in Alberta has definitely increased the national averages. But lastly, people who recently came from naija are surprised when a "laborer" is earning more than an engineer. Salaries here are determined by different means, not by if you have a fancy degree or not.

You're so right. It's really different from the States in this aspect. I'm sure at least 50% of people in Canada have had to wear safety shoes and/or hi viz vest at least once in their life! The crazy thing is most of the jobs pay same or better than office work. It's like Canada is still in the industrial age. Reminds me of images of 20th century England with everyone working in factories and such.

Office jobs are overrated and these guys should get paid more than office jobs most of the times. But I think you're simplifying things. There's a reason for these things.

An average Mexican values his family so much. He always want to stay close to his extended family no matter what. They're happy even with the little money they have so far they can enjoy it with their family members. Unfortunately, Canada is very far away from home than the US. Furthermore, the language barrier. In US, there is a Latin population which is not obtainable in Canada where you have to speak either English or French. However, this is changing. Some Mexicans are now moving to Canada instead of the US. Just recently I was approached by a language academy here in Mexico to travel and teach English to a Mexican community in Canada

They just can't afford it. Forget all that family narrative. Plus the U.S is closer and more convenient.

it's impossible, Mexicans can't travel to both US and Canada without visa, I stand to be corrected.

They can travel without a Visa to Canada. But they have to go through Canadian immigration on Mexican soil before being allowed to get on the plane. Most are not permitted entry into Canada though for obvious reason.

Who will force him to take care of his child ? If he isn't. You can't take care of a child by yourself, neither does the man love/care about you, yet you allow him to enter you, put his seed in you, then carry his child for 9 months which can be deadly especially in Nigeria as woman can die from child birth. Yet wizkid is the idiot ? Todays woman are very dumb.

Bro you are just wasting your time trying to convince some people that Mexico is way better than Nigeria. Is very absord for somebody that have never been to Mexico to come here and start saying what they don’t know. I was there and I know everything you have said is true. Those that will appreciate the information you are giving will be happy you created this topic. God Bless you

That's not the case. Most people leaving naija feel they must go to a 1st world country. If not why even migrate ? 2nd place is simply not an option.

I'm sorry my sister but please try not to give your opinions simply based on how you feel or what you've heard others say. First, Mexico can never be compared to the United States but when compared to Nigeria, it is heaven. All of us won't go to the USA. And hey, I live in the borderland and have a 2years US B1/B2 visa stamped on my passport yet I've never spent a night in the USA.
Also, at the bold, why do Nigerians bomb themselves in churches and mosques? Why do Nigerians use people for rituals and mine their skulls? Why do Nigerians do internet fraud? Or better why do Africans still go around their villages butt naked?..... You get my drift? All of this permutations are borne out of ignorance. Don't generalize. Don't say Mexicans smuggle themselves to the USA when it's just a minority of them that do so. Also know that most people trying to cross into the US border illegally are originally not Mexicans but from other Latin American countries

Two questions

1. Why aren't you trying to get papers in the US.

2. Why don't these Latin Americans stop and settle in Mexico ?

Hello all. Arrived Calgary last weekend and settling in well!
Will find time to give landing gist soon.

Landed seniors, please I need your thoughts and information on buying a car. My budget is CAD 4 - 5k for all expenses to be incurred.

1. Someone recommended buying from Regal Auctions, who conduct auctions every Saturday and Wednesdays. Are there any experiences using them? pros and cons? I have also checked out kijiji. Will be glad for thoughts on this.

2. Please can you provide a breakdown of all expenses to be incurred when purchasing a car? E.g. sales tax, registrations, and car parts (e.g. winter tires - how much and when it should be done)

Thanks in advance.

With a budget for 4-5k, it doesn't matter where you go. Just hope it'll last you a couple years. Just get a trusted mechanic to look over the car.

1. Sale taxes is based on percentage and each province is different.

2. Registration/sticker like $140 give or take.

3. Winter tires and other parts depends if its new or old.

You guys should really research job opportunities before deciding on where to land.
Housing in Ontario is skyrocketing too.
Single applicants have more flexibility to move around than those with kids.
Winter is coming lol.

That being said Toronto is also lovely haha. grin

Housing is only skyrocketing in Ontario, in the Toronto area.

I noticed the amount of US flags at the Calgary airport too and concluded that it could be due to the high amount of air traffic flying between the two countries.

Yes that's why. Both countries economies are extremely integrated. In Calgary you have oil exes from both side of the border flying back and forth. In Toronto CEO's. Hence the nexen program Canada and US have with each other. Then you have tourism, especially with Canadians going down south during the winter months.

Honestly,I keep wondering why ppl waste time and huge financial resources to go to these popular countries to become average citizens ,when there are many many countries one can go to with less those amounts and get settled in the most comfortable respectful way and even get residence permit. I think the major issue is the reason and objective for travelling, some ppl just want to travel and be in places they have been dreaming of. Ppl should try and do their research very well,no be everything be Germany,London,Canada or usa.

Because those are highly developed countries with big economies who speak English. Minus Germany of course. People want to hit ground and start hustling, making money. Not trying to learn a new language when you get there.

Hello house.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this thread informative to all of us.

I'd like to know how this short landing stuff works. I'm looking to do short landing and use the time to secure accommodation, get a school for the kids, enrol my spouse in school and return to Nigeria to continue work for sometime before joining them finally. However my office won't give me more than 5 weeks. Can I achieve all these within 5 weeks? Also if I'm unable to get my PR card (I understand it takes about 12 weeks) before returning to Nigeria, what will happen to my PR status.

5 weeks is more than enough time if you start doing your research before you land. My cousin got his PR card within 5 to 6 weeks. I wouldn't go back until I physically have the PR card in my hand. Call your job and make an excuse and stay longer if you have too. What will happen to your PR status. You'd be a PR in the system, but what you could use to re-enter the country you'd have to inquire the appropriate gov't agency. I wouldn't take anyone's word here on it. Go to the Canadian embassy direct and ask if you have too. Something like this you can't afford to do he/she said. On another note, while everyone is in a hurry to leave naija, I've been reading about a lot of "soft landing", while returning to Nigeria "to continue work for sometime before joining them finally". I have seen marriages break after such a plan. People are delaying the inevitable I feel, especially men.

One thing about taking your chances in life is that, you either win or lose (forget the "learn" cliche). If you do all you can and win, good for you! You become a hero. Everyone becomes your friend. If you lose, trust me, you are on your own. Even your friends will disown you. People have tried it and pulled through, people have also failed. We hear of deportation everyday. People trying to pull these types of feats should learn from people like the OP instead of calling her a liar. In the end, this is what will happen if you move to America as a student without money to support yourself: if you make it, people will call you brave for making such a courageous move, if you fail, people will call you stupid for making such a foolish move. We live in a world full of asslickers. One thing tho, while the end justifies the means, if you try to make to through illegal means, there is no assurance that it will not end up catching up with you, even years after you may have acquired citizenship. What goes round comes round.

I repeat, if you think you can always cheat the system and do things illegally, there is no assurance that it will not catch up with you some day. You may be lucky to escape, but even smarter people get caught sometimes. It's up to you.

Getting out of naija will never be seen as a foolish move regardless of how it turns out.

Not everything requires records. If you go to a place where records are not taken, good for you. But one has to be smart and very observant in all things. I have volunteered at a guadalupe center where I served foods to some american indians so i know what you are talking about. Since we were the ones serving them, we had to eat with them and even take pictures. What I'm just trying to emphasize on this thread is that non-immigrants, especially those on student visas, should stop thinking that life in America will be for them what it is for immigrants. These are two completely different scenarios that should not be juxtaposed. The original twitter OP of this thread was a non-immigrant who came to the US on a student visa, the same process many here are trying to follow, so they need to learn from her, and not compare themselves with some privileged kids.

Any sane person would take their chances as a student in the U.S than stay in naija. It's America, if she puts her mind to it she can legalize herself eventually. I know people in worse situation who have legalized themselves in the U.S. Though Trump and his ICE team are making things much harder. The fact is this woman is a liar and exaggerating things. The Mexicans can show her how to get a job without paper.

The U.S healthcare system is ranked below UK, Canada's, and almost, if not every develop nations, with a lower life expectancy. yes people do get bankrupt, they file for bankruptcy but at least they alive to do so. But the truth of the matter ,government still pay a good portion of healthcare in the US. The problem with this universal health care is that not truly universal. If you have basic problem or generally health then it's fine, but if you have special condition then its horrible. That's why you see Canadians crossing into the border to get healthcare but less wait time and more specialized doctors. We a lot of specializations here , its not even funny that of the money being spent.

no actually your bias is showing. I'm not stopping anybody from going to Canada. Let them go. Even self , make the whole Nigeria go pack themselves inside Canada, thats they're business. I'm not back tracking from anything. I said the OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE. Getting medical residency in a developed country takes a while for even those born in the country so I don't expect a Nigerian immigrant doctor to start practicing tomorrow. But there are so many Nigerian doctors practicing in American and doing well compared to Canada. There recently a report that Nigerian immigrants are some of the most successful group of people in America. Because the Canadian government , give you one yeye paper , you will not let anyone hear word. They give that paper for a reason, that the only good thing they have to offer you. Even on this nairaland, you often see Canada as a plan b option when people can not get an American Visa.

Lmao counter the points and stop getting emotional.

No he can not start practicing tomorrow, please don't be stupid. But he far likely to be able to practice in America than Canada. Please google about medical practice especially for immigrants in Canada. I'm not preaching America exceptionalism, its just the truth. There are job opportunities here and there is opportunity to become an EMPLOYER here better than Canada. Look at the link, see how Americans are using immigrants to flourish their economy. The immigrants in the economy also get a green card and make more money.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23gnk4ZF-sU

Your back tracking. Now he'll "far likely to be able to practice in America than Canada" Is this your opinion or is this a fact ? If it's a fact show us. If not how did you come up with this conclusion ? Your bias is clearly showing. I'm aware of the medical issues in Canada for residency and altering foreign qualifications. Unlike you I'm not bias. Again back to the Mexican guy who couldn't make money during construction. One construct job below pays 29 an hour (60k per year), while the other pays 88,500k per year, with little or no education required. Add overtime and that's easily 100k per year. Post US construction wages.

While you're preaching America exceptionalism which is becoming a myth more and more, you know the 1 percent who became a bill gates, you conveniently like to forget who has a wealthier middle class, or who can move up the socio-economic ladder faster in which country, and the growing gap between the rich/poor Americans. You're more likely to win the lottery than become a Bill Gates. Lastly, what do you mean opportunity to become an employer ? With the internet and how connected the world is, anyone can become an employer anywhere. Your bias is too much my friend. I love America. Lived in Houston and have family all over the U.S. from Houston, Chicago, Oakland, etc. Canada also has major flaws without a doubt. But people who live in developed nations know the truth and will not be drinking the U.S exceptionalism Kool-Aid. It’s like Trump asking how come more people from Norway don’t migrate to the U.S. The world had a good laugh, including people from Norway. They really feel themselves down south.

To sum things up because I can’t go back and forth. Got things to do with the pikin dem. My cousin recently came as a skilled worker and is pulling in 6 figures a year. My good friend ( Femo Yoruba guy) is an engineer, making 6 figures, owns 5 houses in the Toronto area worth 1 million each. Guess his net worth 5 million ? Please no mind am. Even some of the people who left the US because of the tight immigration to go to Canada because they offered them PR are already regretting it. No jobs . Even one time , I was watching the news and one Mexican who was residing illegally in America went to Canada to get paper . He said totally regrets his decision, he prefer to stay in America illegally than stay in Canada legally because he makes more money doing construction work in the US and can take of his family. Getting professional job in Canada is incredibly tough, they would be asking for stupid Canadian experience . I have never heard of such thing on the US. Every country has it flaws , but I have seen so many immigrants do well in this country even better than some of the people wey they born for this country. In America, there are opportunities, especially if you are not lazy . Plus you do not always need to go to school to make money in the country as well.

I can't go through everything, just too much. But to counter the last quote, I've never made less than 6 figures since coming here. And the majority of my co-workers making the same amount were high school drop out. The Mexican guy clearly didn't know where to look or maybe he didn't like paying taxes ? So a doctor in Nigerian can land in America and start practicing tomorrow ? Keep preaching American exceptionalism, I know the truth.

If Canadians wanted to run away to the U.S millions would, believe me. In fact several states depend on Canadians, literally. lol, why are Canadians running away though? Because Nigerians like to behave like Canada is heaven on earth.

Read and comprehend the article well. Canadians don't need a visa to enter the U.S. and can stay up to 6 months visa free. Older Canadians who go down south for a warmer climate during winter time, forget this and may stay a little bit passed the 6 months. The reason this article is extremely comical for anyone who lives in North America, is that Canada has a better safety net than the U.S. Why would any Canadian intentionally live underground in the U.S when they can cross the border and receive free housing, medical care, monthly gov't allowance, etc ? Use your heads people.
