you dont get it. life is not about having a roof over your head and a lil car to drive. your spirit has to be nourished and happy too. what you have is called poverty mentality. i didnt go to canada looking for opportunities. i was young and was heavily into the NBA and most especially vince carter when he was with the toronto raptors. i was in toronto during the 2000 slam dunk contest when vince did that crazy dunk. i came for basketball. to be close to the raptors. come to find out after 2 months in the place, it was like hell. the snow on the street was like 10 inches. the cold was brutal. everyone looked miserable. black people there had no glow whatsoever. it was very depressing. i had to escape before i get depressed. i remember the streets though lol. bloor. spauldina, younge, etc etc
So you didn't go to Canada looking for opportunities. Instead you cam to Toronto Canada due to the NBA. Basically to watch a grown man put an orange ball into a metal rim. Then you were surprised to find out there was snow in Toronto Canada and it was cold. Then you went to a friends place who lived in a run down area and you felt that's how ALL blacks in Toronto or Canada lived. So after that you had to leave, got on a plane and went all the way to Ethiopia PASSING naija? You seem like a young man with no wife/children who just travels all over the world with a back pack. I also have no doubt your refugee claim was denied in Canada making you unable to live here. My friend you are not qualified to give this woman advice even if you're entitled to your own opinion. Lastly, will you ever go back to the Nigeria you keep on bragging about ?

Well I guess your definition of peace of mind relates to money.... to me it doesn't necessarily.

I see people are always talking about bills in the western world like everything is free in Nigeria. Nigeria is expensive and very hard to budget because of so many unexpected expenses that come up daily so I don't really get this bills complaint.

I notice people tend to make this comparisons from e.g. a banker in Nigeria to maybe someone doing odd jobs abroad, but for a working professional perspective you can live a very good life. if you compare bankers with same number of working experience in the UK or US to Nigeria are you telling me the nigerian lives a better life or earns more? Compare doctors to doctors or engineer to engineers?

What i like about the UK or US is I can budget properly and live within my budget.

You say mortgages like it a bad thing. A mortgage is what will allow a 22-25 year old buy a place here and his monthly mortgage payments will be less than the equivalent rent if he was renting same place. This means over the life of the mortgage not only is he paying less than the rent he would have paid if he was waiting to buy the house outright, but he also benefits from price increase from the start. This mortgage is what will allow same type of person buy houses to rent out without putting down the whole amount of the house which means he earns the difference between the rent charged and the mortgage payment and benefits from price increase.

I have friends who work on the island and live in Ajah, earn good money and send hours in traffic everyday. Get home have to put on generator etc, that is a stressful life and yet no vacation to enjoy and destress. And no travelling to London to stay with uncle or aunty and shop all around peckham and brixton is not vacation.

This tax you complain about is what pays for free medical, free education etc .
Don't mind them. A good amount of Nigerians are idiots who don't know how to build a functional 1st world country. The taxes they complain about or mock is what keeps these countries going. They'll say you get taxed to death here but once they earn their salary over there, by the time they pay for their kids schooling, healthcare, etc themselves, they don't know people abroad probably takes home more ? If it's so expensive to live abroad and cheaper back home why am I supporting my family over there and still managing to support my family over here ? They also don't know how the mortgage system works here. Then again they compare a good functional house with all the essential amenities, to the poorly built/crap craftsman ship houses back home.

First of all, you are doing very well already in Nigeria and you have no reason at all to leave Nigeria. You have a good job + investment properties (buildings) which you own. Investing in business is preferable in Nigeria than in US or Canada (about 90% of start-ups fail in the US), high taxation (at least 35% of your profits) and there are more profit returns on investment in Nigeria than in US/Canada. When you come here, life starts afresh for you. You will discover that your foreign (Nigerian) degrees and experience are totally nothing and they don't count here and you will have to go to school for about the next 2 years (during which you will have to make-do with meagre, low-paying jobs to survive). On average, it will take you about 5 years to stand on your feet in Canada.

After going to school and getting a job, you will live an average life here in Canada, nothing exceptional or more than that. A great part of your salary will go into heavy taxes (imagine earning $5000 a month and $1200 goes to taxes leaving you with $3,800), bills (mortgage, light, water, gas, phone bills e.t.c), leaving you with just enough to survive and nothing extra. You see jobs, you will find them aplenty here but you will not be left with much as most of your money will go into taxes and bills. The average US/Canadian works to pay bills and it is an endless cycle. Several Nigerians are returning home to invest.

To be honest, life in Nigeria is better financially if you have a good job and several investments and you can always visit US/Canada for holidays.
Can you imagine all that money in taxes. It's better to not pay taxes and stay in naija. Who needs good roads, education, security, infrastructure, hospitals, Police, etc. The average nigerian in Nigeria lives in poverty while the leaders steal money and eventually come or send their children abroad ironically here. Now that's an endless cycle.

There was a successful bank manager with a large house in Lekki owned by him who was doing very well in Nigeria. He was advised by his wife that they should relocate to Canada and live bigger. He foolishly heeded the advice, sold all his properties and his big house and moved on to Canada. They returned back four years later having lost everything and the marriage crashed. Canada has done a lot of havoc to Nigerians and instead of coming back they stay put tolerating the inhuman lifestyles that they are forced to inculcate and then they will be dreaming of when they will return back to Nigeria. Later, out of frustration, they will now talk evil about Nigeria claiming that Nigerians are suffering, no light, no good roads. In the end, there is regret and regret has no cure, it is worse than HIV and Ebola and in the end, like the Bible said, then desire will fail and man goes to its long home and as the preacher stated, Vanity upon vanity. Madam, Stay back and let your husband find something else to do. If he is hardworking and business is low, it is because he has not realised that the Brook cherith has dried up and that he need to do something else. For that, he should think deeply about what he is very good at that he often times overlooked. Like the woman, who was asked in the Bible, what do you have in the house? Hello Nairalanders, Please I need ur advise. Am currently 2months pregnant, and My husband is thinking of us relocating to Canada. I currently work in the bank while my husband is into Forex and Securities Trading Business. We were doing averagely okay until last year when business started shaking, my husband has lost a lot and now he is thinking of us relocating to Canada to start afresh. If I resign and we sell our properties, and the little savings we have should be enough to sponsor him for a Postgraduate Course (2years), while I follow him as his wife ( then I get a job), he wants this option cos am a professional and I have good work experience. Option 2 is for me to do a post graduate course and he accompanies me (mayb I will get a good job fast cos of my qualifications). if I wait till we have our baby, the expenses will be much(I.e the financial requirement for the visa). My hubby's uncle is ready to assist us, but my husband doesn't want to take the risk of investing in business again. He has Sasacheskwan or Toronto in mind. I will really appreciate advise thanks
Just for the future of your baby's sake, move. There's no future in NIgeria. You said the business started shaking. You don't want to be poor in Nigeria. I'm currently in canada. Those who couldn't make it here either had no papers or are losers who got into 419 and chased around jamaican girls all day. canada is a country that you get out whatever you put in. Do your research, make competent plans, work hard and you two will be fine. Try to have your child here if possible for automatic citizenship. But definitely move to Canada if you can. That shouldn't even be debated.

Run away. Her child was no "mistake". She was enjoying, sleeping with "ballers" with "swag". She was not interested in good men who had something going for themselves at the time. Now they gave her belle and left her, she's looking for a saviour. NOW she's' looking for that good guy. Now she wants that good guy to help raise her child, share the expenses, etc. I personally had a naija women who had a 4 year old boy and wanted to get with me. I respectfully declined and went my way but she kept on asking why. I had to explain to her I'd rather die a honourable death before spending a penny of my money/time raising another man's child, while the actually father is in the club poppin bottles. Of course the father as a 419 guy with "swag". My brotha run away. This is parental fraud.

I think such statements are usually just a big stamp on the forehead of intrinsic insecurities and inferiority complex masked with defiant pride.
That's just it. Most if not all are insecure. They'll run around in the diaspora claiming naija, riding around with a naija flag in their cars. Buy them a 1 way ticket, ask them to denounce their US, Canadian,UK ,etc passport they'll never. They'll also claim how Nigerian they are because they go back for 2 weeks every year or so, chop suya and enjoy. Having pride and giving such an allegiance to a country that never gave you anything makes no sense to me. The truth is most, especially the ones who are stuck in naija don't care about her. Even naija celebrities like Banky, who has a US passport and would get rid of his naija passport before his US. Even P-square didn't want to have his children born on their fatherland as they all flew their wives to America to have their pikin. This naija pride is stupidity if you ask me.

Hello all,

Myself and my two kids have just gotten our visas processed in 6 working days.

Please i just want to know if i can apply in canada for open work permit on arrival as my spouse is currently studying there and would be on coop work permit from May.

I want to know if my son who is 4years can also school without study permit. I will enrol the little one in creche once i am able to get a job.

Anyone with valuable input should please shed some light to my question for clarity purpose.

A visiting visa is just for VISITING. You won't get a work permit. While I don't think Canada would like to educate your child with tax payers money, I believe by law every child has a right to attend school to the high school level. You may get away with that one.

No, she thinks money grows like grass in Canada..
It's not hard to understand what she meant. Mike's son and wife are Canadian citizens. They are GUARANTEED quality healthcare, education, running water, electricity, and yes money every month to provide for themselves if they can't financially. Mike being married to a Canadian citizen can and already has permanent residency if not citizenship by now. Therefore he's entitled to the same benefits. What does this mean ? Nigerian can be a war zone tomorrow and he'll just buy a one way ticket and leave. The state of Nigeria or Nigeria's prosperity does not directly affect him, HE HAS OPTIONS unlike most Nigerians. What can't most here understand when she was blasting Mike for having Canadian papers yet endorsing anyone ready to pay him despite their ability to govern ? What ?

If GEJ was doing such a good and Nigeria is getting better why is he tucking his wife/son away all the way in Canada ? Buy them a 1 way ticket and let them come and enjoy the prosperity happening in naija due to GEJ leadership. The fact is most of these Nigerian celebrities have dual citizenship to a better country and could careless about who leads naija and how well they do it. They can always get on a plane and leave. Lastly, the state must give one a platform to be success and become self-made. While Bill Gates is self-made he wouldn't have accomplished what he did without good and stable electricity to innovate, no ?

You cannot compare students who have to apply for a visa "from" elsewhere to Rafeeq. Rafeeq was born in UK, the only thing he is not entitled to is a BRITISH PASSPORT. He is entitled to EVERYTHING ELSE a British citizen is entitled to. As soon as he is born, if his parents wants to take him out of UK, his
parents can apply for a Nigerian passport for him/her, get the same visa category as them, but make sure he does not spend more than "Bleep" amount of time outside UK, and when his parents wants to renew their visa to come to UK, all they have to do is include his passport...until he gets to full time education...OR his parents can live him in UK...This is why Illegal immigrants even send their children to school in UK, do you think the Government is not aware of this!

As a child age 5 entitled to full time education, if he starts attending and starts missing classes or attending erratically, his mum/parents would be subject to fines or imprisonment...that should tell you how compulsory/important education is.

He was born here, and has spent his formative years here so sending children aged 5 and above back affects them psychologically because all they have known their whole lives is UK.

This is not a generally known case because it came on the back of another case whereby a Portuguese lady and another lady followed their husbands. When their hubby returned to their respective countries, the mum applied for right to stay and were granted SOLELY on the basis that the children were aged 5 and above, in full time education, had spent their formative years here so sending them back home would affect them psychologically and of course they are still young children so need someone to look after them and ideally the mums are the best in this case. And you know EU laws is universal....what is good for the goose is good for the gander...UK are legally bound to apply the same rule and they did this hence reason they took out the "7year residency rule" and replaced it with nothing...read through any case involving children, you would see that even if they want to deport overstaying parents, and issue them separate letters of intention to pick them up/surrender to UKBA, there is always a "subtle" separate clause in the last paragraph of the children's letters of the extra rights "qualifying" children has...
Isn't the boy already in naija ?

Then you cousin never had proper work permit, post-study work visa (PSW) is just 2years work visa given to every foreign student after graduation(though cancelled now) and its non-renewable.

Proper work visa gives you 5years route to ILR, first you will be given 3yrs when you renew that it will add up to the 5yrs needed for ILR.
Well he had proper work visa just not the one that leads him to ILR. So can't one transit from PSW to a proper work visa ? He did his master's there and worked with a good company. And isn't 5 years a long time just to get a ILR ? To get a renewal doesn't the company have to prove no Brit or EU member wants/can do the job ? Lastly, he's been there going on 5 years, are you telling me he's illegal ?

Exactly!
Same scenario played out in most countries that opened their doors to immigrants in recent times, that is another reason why Canada is some years late in almost everything, all these friendly immigration programs(most closed now anyway) were copied from Europe, GREAT britain to be precise. From the days of HSMP, IGS, PSW e.t.c ...... The government is actually listening to these ignorant Canadians cos they have the power to vote them out hence they are tightening the rules e.g express entry
I know Canada needs immigrants especially the tim hortons, Mcdonalds and walmarts! I can't imagine how those places would function without them.
Care-in-giver has been changed too. They now need LMIA/LMO too. What that means is employers would have to consider Canadians and PR first before outsiders unlike before.

A lot of British resident I have met here left the UK to take advantage of better wages in Alberta cos of the oil sands, the wages in other provinces are low and of course ease of entry.

And Quebec would definitely not take in people cos they can speak French, if that was the case. Francophone countries in Africa would be empty by now. lol
Good debate. I kind of like politics and I feel people here looking to come to Canada will learn some things about Canada by this discussion.

Every country modifies their immigration policies according to their needs. Because Canada did not do it 5 years ago and are doing it now doesn't necessarily mean their "5 years behind". It could just mean it wasn't needed at the time. I mean if Canada is constantly 5 years behind, the bank of England wouldn't have a Canadian running it (j/k). But in all seriousness, I'm glad the UK did it before. Because with the amount of illegal immigrants running around there, Canada could lean from some of the mistakes they made.

The Conservative gov't lead by Harper will do anything they need to get votes. Just as in the past election Harper's gov't had a plan to reduce green gas emission. With the oil sands boom he has not done a thing. My point is the gov't will do whatever to generate capital. Some of the new immigration laws are flawed and will be returned to it's original state in due time. Watch express entry will be done with I'm telling you. And yes Canada actually needs immigrants to work at the Tim Horton's, McDonalds, etc. They're vital to the country's economy. Now if you're dumb enough to stay stagnant and remain there years later after migrating to Canada then it' your fault. Canada offers immigrants opportunities. Nothing more, nothing less. Start working at minimal jobs, go to school and make something of yourself. I did ! Besides I'd rather work these minimal jobs and live in Canada than some 3rd world country.

It doesn't matter that they changed the caregiver program. No PR or Canadians are willing to do it period. I mean after I was offering workers minimum wage, and saying they must be fluent in Igbo, and able to cook egusi soup, nobody came calling. Therefore I had to import someone from naija (cousin) who I on the verge of getting his visa to come over. Get my drift. But back to the matter. Everything is about supply and demand. And as of right now Canada needs immigrants in comparison to other developed nations. All I'm saying is that I'd take my chances here over other countries as of right now before it becomes overpopulated like GB. As of Quebec that's what I heard. But I don't care about that province really.

No Canadians actually want potential immigrants shut out. So the next government might take tougher measures. I have seen this scenario played out in the UK. Canadians are now blaming potential immigrants for loss of jobs and low wages. Check CIC express entry page on Facebook to feel the pulse and thinking of average Canadian on the street.

Bu infrastructure and tech. I meant, postal system, banking, transportation , traffic e.t.c
Canada is like 5 years behind. have you wondered why eBay is not functioning in Canada and why you have to set reminders on phone to pay bills like credit card..
going to work now. back at 5pm.
Rhetoric from ignorant Canadians compared to the government are two different things. When one gets frustrated they look for a scapegoat for their lack of success. In reality immigrants are needed to keep Canada going and even if whites who don't admit it, they know it deep down. Look at any major cities in Canada, can you honestly say without immigrants they'd be striving? If Canada really wanted potential immigrants shut out they would have shut down the caregiver program by now. I mean coming here as a "caregiver", then getting your PR in 2 years, then citizenship after that. A PR can now file for their husband/kids and so on. Nowadays all you have to do is speak French and show allegiance to the French language and Quebec will take you in lol. Honestly which other developed nation has such a liberal immigration policy. Didn't you leave the UK to take advantage of that ?

As for infrastructure I can't speak about it. Haven't had enough experience in Europe to compare.

Things have started to change or changed in canada too. Canada is stylishly closing its borders just like Australia. CEC (canadian experience class) which most, if not all students usually use to apply for Permanent residence(PR) has been cancelled.

Any application for PR has to be through express entry and an applicant only stands a good chance of being selected if his/her employer is ready to go through the hassle(prevalent wage, job ad specs, paying lawyer, setting up the job ad, interviewing people etc) of applying for LMO/LMIA, similar to the Resident Labour Market Test in the UK i.e the employer can't find a Canadian/PR to do the job.

A student may be lucky to apply for express entry PR through PNP in some provinces after completion of studies in that province especially in western Canada (although highly competitive), but this still increases the chances of being selected.. But in a province like Ontario, I heard that a student getting PR via their PNP/express entry route is like a camel trying to enter through the eye of a needle.

''Misleading? — Lana Ferries 2014-09-29 17:28
What about the international students who already invested a lot of money settling in Canada to study here? They were promised that after finding a job (on their field) and having worked for 12 months on a full time position, they could then apply for PR right away. Had they known the rules could change any time during the process without considering the harm this would cause and the risk this represented, I'm sure they would have not invested their time and savings in Canada. This is so unfair. Wouldn't this be consider misleading?

# Internation Students would not have a way to stay in Canada — Lana Ferries 2014-10-01 21:06
I'm actually talking about the thousands of current and former international students who are in difficult positions now. They have contributed to the Canadian economy by paying high fees to attend Canadian educational institutions (which is almost double the fee), as well as purchasing both goods and services during their studies. Most came to Canada hoping to stay – because they were told that after graduating and working 12 months they could apply for permanent residence but for them staying might not be an option anymore. In other words international students with Canadian job experience do not have a way stay in Canada permanently.

I'm an international student and just checked this on the CIC website and cannot believe what I'm seeing! I feel so cheated! I am paying triple for my education because I was lured under the promise that I could apply for PR afterwards. Now all I get is a "thank you for spending your money in Canada, go and wait forever to see if we want you". This is not even misleading lady, this is plain FRAUD!

To say that many of us students feel cheated and taken advantage of does jot describe the anger we feel. Canada will lose much credibility over this. In business practice this is called "bait and switch", you promise one thing and then after the customer (students) pay, you change the rules of the game. I can see a class-lawsuit in the horizon. Students left their families, friends, jobs and homes to come to Canada, pay TRIPLE the local rate for a degree/diploma, with the promise that we could apply directly for a PR after 12 months of Canadian Experience. Now that we are here the govt is telling us that in exchange for our sacrafice we will get nothing but to wait in an endless cue with millions of others sitting at home abroad who have sacrificed nothing for Canada!!!! Then again, having lived in both countries. The UK is a much advanced country than Canada, maybe that is why some students prefer UK, not every one might be interested in Indefinite leave to remain (ILR). When I moved to Canada from the UK for work and residency reasons, it was like I traveled 5 years back in time due to the difference in Infrastructure and environment.
This was just implemented by the cons gov't. People are still waiting to see how it'll turn out. And with federal elections around the corner, they can be possibly voted out. I feel in due time it'll go back to what it use to be. The new system has a lot of flaws. Also elaborate on what you mean by infrastructure and environment being behind. I'm confused.
