If I was doing a build with a fixed timeline and I can accommodate their Supervision fees then I'll go with one of these.

No one is perfect but I have found these list to be above reproach.

Why am I not using them?

My build has no immediate timeline (there are two houses, one of which is totally empty that I can stay in) and is go as I feel is necessary. Most of them would not want that.

What's your thoughts on using stone dust to fill a compound before laying interlocks, I know it's sharp sand that is usually used. I have sand filed with literate as high as it can get.

my question is that, does stone dust offer any advantage as I know it's more costly compared to sharp. My interlocker suggested it but he thinks brabus has either finished paying me or Dasuki shared some money with me. grin grin

Chekitaut:
This will blow your mind

IMPORTANT USE OF STONE DUST

After reading the attached file(PDF) i believe your perspective towards stone dust will Change!!! apart from science and technology it is observed that 90% of sharp sand is with salt content or mud, understandable that the best sharp sand is from Odo Ogun in Ogun State that is without salt but is with particles of mud, this mud when mixed with Cement in future loose its size like when decomposition took place leaving void(holes) in Bricks, Mortar and concrete where is mostly use. Report shows it that products from stone dust is 15% higher strength than that of the concrete made of normal sand and brick chip.

To the main point of discuss
Sharp sand price is on the high side now, despite its less strength to stone dust. Major reason is simple economy recession, High cost of Diesel and foreign exchange to parts attached to articulated truck used to transport this product.

Standard Organisation of Nigeria mandate all bricks producing factories in Abuja to produce bricks with stone dust. To the big blow a tonnage of stone dust is N2,200, while in the south west is sold at the peck price of N700 per tone another funny thing is that bricks in Abuja and Lagos sold at same rate.

Why Chekitaut is HERE
Stone dust is cheap now

I find it confusing or perhaps misleading, would Lakowe be classed as Ajah ?

My thoughts used to be that Ajah ends at Abraham Adesanya.

I had a similar dilemma, and instead went for the option of a tank tower at a considerable cost. I thought long and hard about it, and below are the factors.

# The water tank is extra weight, has this been factored into your structural drawings and provisions made ?
# I hear that when the water overfills, it can sometimes stain the paint work, I like low maintenance and I try as much as possible to factor that into a build.
# You know as good as water is, it can be quite destructive if not well controlled. So you would not want this damaging your building, leaks/overflow etc.
# Even if you put it over your roof, you will need it higher to serve the upstairs showers if you have one, if you have taps in the bathroom you will be Ok, I have both so that if pressure is not good, tap is the backup plan.
# Most of the roof designers back home are funny, they design the outlet for the tanks, but you find that when it rains, water is coming through there as its usually not well sealed, thus damaging your pop/pvc/roof wood, we had this in one of the builds that our favorite NL engineer did for us, what was himself and his architect thinking ?

The tank tower if well constructed gives you a few options, you can have 2/3 tanks at the top level etc. Mine has 2 levels serving different parts of the building.

I also share your concern about running the pipes downwards as well, that is how my current water flow has been done, the supply pipe comes down first, but I wonder if going upwards first and then coming down would have been a better idea (I dont know as i am not a plumber). I also asked if a 50 mm pipe can be used for the supply but I don't think this was done, i suspect its a 32mm but the pressure is good sha. However it has not been tested in anger, which will be the moment of truth (Open a lot of taps at the same time).

As per the pressure machine, I currently have this system in my nija house where I reside, personally I do not like it but for the sake of having the feel of a power shower, thats my only option. I will not also sanction the installation in a tenant house as I just see it breaking down very often, the fact that you also need electricity to run it 24/7 means its just flawed in my opinion, I also detest the fact that if a tenant leaves a tap open or not well closed, the pump is working 24/7, most of those pumps are air cooled which is not the latest and most effective design, the best is water cooled, so they could be working 24/7 and we wonder why the coils end up burning.

earthrealm:
the present discussion on water pressure issues on duplexes is an interesting topic, in my residence, the tan k is diecly placed on the roof, water pressures to the shower heads is inadequate, the LL installed 1 of those pressure pumps after much complaint from the residents, and it somewhat remedied the problem...albeit not satisfactorily....presently there is what i suspect to be internal leakage, as water is dripping from 1 of the walls outside.....also the main tap outside, once that one is turned on...water supply ceases totally on the first floor of the duplex

going forward, am about commencing my own build, also a duplex, and am worried about how to prevent such an issue from my build.
i also would prefer having the water tan k on the roof...if i can, the 2nd option am considering is making the security houise a 1 storey build and placing the water tan k there.

some plumber said the present practise of first dropping the supply from the tank to the ground first before sending it up again is wrong, that he prefers running the water supplypipes up in the ceiling/last blocks on the roof...and the dropping them down to the shower heads/water taps...ie the bathrooms....
has anyone tried this....what are the pros and cons?

also mny people recommended using 1 '' pipes to serve as supply from the overhead tank, am thinking 2'' should even work better is creating the differential needed for adequate flow,... am i right in this assumption?
i detest those pressure pumps, and i would want to totally avoid it in my build.

nice thread btw, hv been on ghost mode for a while
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by mavverick(m): 9:43am On Jul 25, 2016
Great to see that the thread is serving its true purpose.

On the subject of water flow, I want to have a dedicated tank so supply compound taps which are usually plastered into the wall and would typically have a zenos tap, here is my question I do not want to raise the tank higher than necessary, lets assume that the tap is currently at 3 feet above current ground level, at what height should the tank be ? , how many foot/inches should it be higher than the tap to maintain good pressure, the distance is also going to span about 40 metres to the other end of the building.

Actually interested to know if such raw material exist in Nigeria, if its imported then no value to me, as I personally would not buy such if it was imported.

ottersberger:
I'm sure you can import anything that's not on the prohibited schedule.

The problem is, in Nigeria, we love the word cheap. I'm yet to hear that word anywhere as much as I have heared at home. We seem to have problem distinguishing between cheap and value.

China have any quality you desire. You only get what you're willing to pay for, and our people usually opt for cheap.

The other day, during lunch I stumbled upon these guys who were laying what we call interlocking stones, and as I stepped on it, it felt very strong and sturdy, in fact this is what is being used for what we call cobbled streets, they can last for 100's of years with little maintenance. Stopping by, I was very happy since I was planning on using interlock as well, and I stopped by to ask them what the mix ratio was or if they were doing anything special, to my amazement the guy supervising the work said that this is how it comes from China.

He said its granite stones that has been cut into those shapes, I could not believe it and the fact that it was coming from China. sad
https://www.zenet.co.uk/images2/interlock1.jpg
https://www.zenet.co.uk/images2/interlock2.jpg

I also noticed how they did the manholes ets, its metal like it is in most places in the UK, and can be lifted up easily for access.
https://www.zenet.co.uk/images2/interlock3.jpg

Why dont we have something like this in nija ? Is there anything stopping the use of such ?

The breaking of ground or removing interlocking, I dont think belongs to the modern era.
https://www.zenet.co.uk/images2/interlock4.jpg

I am also curious about the stones, do we have such in Nigeria ? I know we have huge granite deposits in some parts of Nigeria, any reason why we cant have something like this in Nigeria, not imported though.

Hello Egun.

In as much as I understand your points, I think you will find that you have more trouble doing something too radical than sticking with the norm. If you wanted to consider solar + 110v, why dont you just have dual as in on grid and then solar as well. At least that's the setup that I know works in the western world, my neighbor has one of those solar panels, he even sells the electricity back to the grid. Ok let me stop there, I know we are not there yet in nija.

What happens if your solar panel battery dies or a component and it will take some weeks to get a replacement from USA ?
You will also be surprised with the choices of electrical fittings in nija, when I went to buy mine, there were a lot of nice options. It just didnt make financial sense for the deployment purpose, most of the stuff they sell in nija comes from China, most of the electrical fittings they sell in Europe, not sure about USA also comes from China.

EgunMogaji:
I'm looking for "intelligent" feedback from those "using or have supported/installed" wholehouse 110 volts in Nigeria.

Please I'm not looking for reasons not to use it but rather the challenges and how it was solved.

Thanks.

Depends on tiler.
It typically ranges from 300 - N400 per sqm
Expect to pay a separate price for staircase or anything they class as different from normal tiling.
Expect to pay a separate price for skirting

Ensure your bricklayer rough rubs the wall before tiler starts, otherwise they will charge for that.
Also, get them to measure it in front of you, this is what I did, I then put all the measurement into Excel and I do my calculations, that way nobody gets cheated and calculator will not make mistake shocked

I may be able to help but I dont know how i can because i am not a builder, I may be able to give you prices for tiling per sqm which is widely available anyway, prices of electrical stuff and toilet fittings. Then again, taste can be different so might be better if one of the more experienced builders give you an idea.

Do you have an idea of the space area ?

Demainman1:
Please tell me more. Will I spend more? It's only a BQ. I don't intend to do the compound with interlock yet.

This is hilarious.
Its clear you don't also know how to lie as this your story has K leg. Are NL accounts that expensive that husband and wife are sharing, is it not NL accounts that boy hugging dating site is opening like as if he's opening bottles of coca-cola.

Who like brabus pass ? is it husband or wife ? grin

Instead of you to just sit and learn from the fraudsters being exposed (thier tricks and what to watch out for), and also learn about building matters, you chose to dig your head inside sand and now you are sinking and struggling to come out. I think you typing your open letter makes you look like an absolute joke, how do we even know that its not Mr Lastpage who got your school daughter pregnant ? and Mrs Lastpage is playing good Samaritan. lol grin

When I exposed Bosun on this very thread, the very bad works he did, the forged building plan. It was all to educate others, the money is a secondary issue, you will all notice that I stand by my generosity to offer that boy N5k to tidy himself up.

lastpage:
OPEN LETTER

Good Morning everyone.

I am the wife of Lastpage.

As husband and wife, we use this same account on Nairaland.
Sometimes, l make it known that it is a female/wife that is posting if l think there may be confusion. Other times l dont bother.

I opened the (Give birth thread) that has been quoted as Lastpage (My Husband) sometimes ago, to assist my former school daughter when she came up with the idea of giving birth abroad and asked me for assistance. I could not help her directly because we are not related so l promised her l would help her get information from people with similar experience. She insisted she has the money to fund it and kind people volunteered all those information and many other people that l dont know, as you can read from the responses, also benefited from the information provided.
This is why my husband (Lastpage) insisted that l should not delete the thread otherwise l would have done so a long time ago.

She gave birth in the U.K, paid her hospital bills and all was done and documented properly.
As luck will have it, she also won the Visa lottery in 2012 and eventually relocated permanently to the US, with her child. she has three kids now.
This is the summary of it.

Now, l have been reading things posted by some posters here which at best is uninformed and just mischievous.
I cannot stop anyone from making any post they want to make so, they can continue to make the post till kingdom come.

I had a serious discussion with Lastpage himself about his exchanges with some characters on this particular thread and l have made it clear to him that he does not need this sort of lowering himself, to the level that others have put themselves.
At least, if children are behaving as children, what about him? Should older person not know better?
Anonymously and online, people would say things they dare not say in person, because they dont have to defend it.

He takes to Nairaland as entertainment and unwinding but l have made it known to him that even at that, he has to carefully chose those he responds to. There is a limit to such things.
I wrote this to clear the air once and for all, with regards to many people who hold him in very high esteem on Nairaland.

Those that want to hold unto their rumour (one even said he is a woman, one even called him Brabus, imagine?) are free to do so, since that is their upbringing.
I have specifically pleaded with him to ignore those who are like children here but he is still free to have an adult discussion.
That is why l am his wife.

I will not respond to whatever insult as l cant identify the person making it.
