We can't play one striker as Chicarito can't lead the line,Berba will drop into the space  that Wesley will be in and rooney will be wasted there besides Wesley likes to play in the number 10 role but so does Rooney. Utd could play a 4-3-3 with Rooney as the lone striker but even then Rooney will try and drop off. So he could get in Sneijder's way.

Sneijder is also quite injury prone. To spend 35M for a player that's played an average of 22 league matches over the past 3 seasons is a huge gamble.

He's 27 so there's no resale value.

His name is also difficult to spell. Very annoying name
Playing two strikers with sneidjer behind will be possible only if we sell Carrick for a more physical defensive central midfielder.besides i don't see Fergie playing two out and out wingers at aa time.there is the huge possiblity that he will play one line hugging winger and another who will tuck in most of the time (Park,Giggs).so there we will not be crowded out in the middle with two upfront and Wesley in the middle.
my problem is that for 35 mil and 190 pounds a week, you need to build your team around that player and it feels like Veron part 2 all over again.
the presence is Carrick and Rooney in the first 11 make it look like a bridge too far.

he is known to tell a lie or two but,

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied pursuing Wesley Sneijder, rejecting widespread reports that Manchester United are close to a deal for the Internazionale playmaker.

Although no formal offer has been received by the Italian club, the United chief executive David Gill is reported to have been in contact with parties close to Sneijder, and to have received assurances that the player would be open to a move. And while the Inter director Marco Branca has insisted that the Holland international is "not for sale", there is a sense in Italy that the club's owner Massimo Moratti could yet be tempted to cash in on a player who is not ideally suited to the new manager Gian Piero Gasperini's preferred tactical system.

Ferguson, however, has rejected all suggestions of a move for Sneijder. "I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that [reports of United's interest in the player]," he told ESPN Soccernet Press Pass. "First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway.

"You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately. And we have to answer these for some reason - why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player. There's nothing we can do about it."

part 3:

The real test though will be by leading by example. Starting from the presidency, Jonathan would have to start by cutting costs in his office and that of the vice president. Right now, both offices are manned by a retinue of aides that they can both do without. In addition to the numerous aides are the legions of parastatals that are statutorily under the presidency but would be more effective if they are granted autonomy to function as self-funding institutions like the Central Bank of Nigeria or the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Of equal importance is the need to prune the size of the presidential air fleet. The website of the Nigerian Air Force shows that the presidential air fleet has a current holding of 11 aircraft, mainly used by the presidency, national assembly and the judiciary. Other uses include the furtherance of the nation’s foreign policy objectives through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ECOWAS Secretariat, African Union, Heads of friendly African countries, and in support of peace-making efforts within the West African sub-region.
All well and good; it is obvious that we have one too many aircraft to spare with which we like to play the role of Father Christmas in Africa. But, charity, it is often said, begins at home. We must first learn to take care of the homestead before spreading our largesse all over Africa.

Politics › Re: The Cost Of Governance (iii) by mbulela(op): 5:09pm On Jul 13, 2011
part 2:

Clearly, the main reason the federal government cannot curb expenditure on the recurrent side of the budget has to do with its size. As human rights lawyer and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, pointed out in an interview over the weekend, the federal government has its hands in too many pies. It wants to invest in education, health care, agriculture, industry, ecological matters, and so on, which should be the responsibility of the states. But if power is devolved from the federal government to the states, a lot of these expenses taken on by centre would be eliminated, making it less attractive to political jobbers and their cronies.

Another reason stems from the lack of political will to take the tough decisions, constitutional and policy-wise, to cut down on consumption. For instance, the removal of petroleum products subsidies, as unpopular as it is, is one way of eliminating a major cost that does not get to the poor for whom it is intended. If it is the federal government’s desire to raise living standards and bridge income inequalities, a better way of going about it is by diverting subsidies - implicit and explicit - to areas such as agriculture where it would have the most impact. Another advantage of removing subsidies on fuel is the value added in the downstream oil sector, as petroleum refineries would function and fuel imports would become a thing of the past.

Well, the time for those tough decisions is upon us, as we can no longer hide from the fact that there must be improvement in the quality of spending by the federal government. Restoring fiscal discipline will be one of the first tasks Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in her expanded role as Minister of Finance would have to deal with in the months ahead. The good thing is that she has the mental fortitude and drive to push through reforms that would improve transparency in the public sector, and plug leakages and wasteful spending.
Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts, however, would have to be complemented by a directive to the Civil Service Commission and the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government to commence a wholesale review of the public sector, without exempting any ministry, department and agency of government. Their terms of reference should include, but would not be limited to, developing a status report on all the MDAs; establishing their roles and effectiveness in undertaking the functions for which they were established; ascertaining the desirability of retaining them and the implication on the public purse; ascertaining those that carry out similar functions; making recommendations, including legislative amendments, to scrap or merge them; and most import, establishing the savings that would be made from sector-wide reforms and rationlisation.

Let no one delude themselves. For the Jonathan administration to undertake an assignment of this magnitude will be extremely unpopular. It also has the potential of being politically volatile, and will be resisted from all quarters, starting from the executive, legislature, states and local governments to organised labour and the media. But the goal for the president is not to win a popularity contest. And sometimes, unpopular decisions have to be taken for the greater good of the country. However, in so far as the objective is well-intentioned and would enable the federal government divert more resources to infrastructure spending, through which more jobs can be created and absorb the jobs losses from the public sector, then there should be no hesitation about taking the bull by the horn.

The Jonathan administration just does not get it. If the stories that have been published in the newspapers in recent weeks are to be taken for gospel truth, then President Goodluck Jonathan either has his head in the clouds or is being ill-advised by the people around him. First, stories rear their heads in the media that the president intends to create new ministries in order to reduce the incidence of discord that arises between ministers and their ministers of state. The thinking in the presidency is that if new ministries are created, all 42 ministers will be at par and no longer have to bicker over the discharge of their functions.

Then another story makes its way into the papers that the federal government intends to create the Ministry of Information Technology to cater solely to the whims of the information technology sector, in isolation of the communications and science and technology ministries. As nonsensical as that sounds, the president then decides to over-crowd his office with a deputy chief of staff, a principal secretary and a coterie of special advisers for energy, internal affairs, social development, ethics and values, and gender issues. These new batch of special advisers, mind you, would expectedly busy themselves with matters already undertaken by ministries, departments and agencies under the federal civil service structure.

Surely, there is a disconnect somewhere. On the one hand, Jonathan deems it wise to create new ministries to eliminate schism between what we term senior and junior ministers, and on the other, he appoints special advisers (of cabinet rank) who would interfere in the day-to-day operations of the MDAs. In his desire to restructure the ministerial and special advisory portfolios to function with greater efficiency, the president is creating more chaos and an unwieldy, costly government.

But all this would not arise if there was rigour applied by the president and his minders on the restructuring of those portfolios and eliminating waste. As it stands, Section 148 (1) of the constitution grants the president enormous powers to assign any responsibility of the federal government, including the administration of any department of government to his vice president and ministers. The section states: “The President may, in his discretion, assign to the Vice President or any Minister of the Government of the Federation responsibility for any business of the Government of the Federation, including the administration of any department of government.”
The implication of this provision is that conflicts need not arise if the president, in his discretion, elects to delineate and assign specific roles to each of his ministers. Unfortunately, that kind of rigourous thought process and innovation is missing in this government. Otherwise, the idea of creating new ministries would never have been given consideration at a time when the focus should be on rationalising the public sector.

ANY staff within these banks will easily tell you how life has been taken out of these banks where CBN installed its own management. For almost two years, all the eight banks under CBN have seen their financial situation deteriorate into critical states. Most members of the CBN installed management were failed managers in their various institutions until the CBN picked them up to come and manage institutions that were far bigger than any institution they have ever managed before their appointment.

What has emerged in the two years of CBN installed management are banks without direction and staff that are highly demoralized. Figures obtained from the CBN clearly show that at the close of 2010, all the CBN taken over banks were highly dependent on the interbank market. Of the N900 billion inter-bank takings as the close of 2010, the eight CBN managed banks accounted for over 90 per cent of these takings. These were the same banks that when the CBN took over, he told the world that their indebtedness to the interbank market stood at N247 billion. Now even after pumping in N620 billion into these banks, after they have sold their toxic assets, their net interbank indebtedness is now in excess of N800 billion more than thrice the figure when the CBN took over these banks.

From when the CBN management took over these banks till date, while other banks not managed by CBN engaged in aggressive loan recovery drive, the CBN installed management sat patiently, waiting to offload toxic loans at significant discount to the AMCON. In two years, none of the CBN managed banks was able to recover up to 10 per cent of the non-performing loans they inherited. Insiders in these banks will tell you that the CBN managed banks did not consider it their mandate. So what was their mandate? Nigerians should ask. To sit down, earn fat salaries, and wait for AMCON to bail them out while they negotiate the sale of the banks to their cronies or CBN preferred cronies. How sad.

In my books, this is SLS greatest sin.the choice of managers for the rescued banks and their mediocre performnce alone is a sackable offence.

Business › NSE Employs Chief Of Staff From JP Morgan Chase by mbulela(op): 5:28pm On Jul 12, 2011
11 Jul 2011

By Goddy Egene

Barely one month after THISDAY exclusively reported that the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Mr. Oscar Onyema, had received approval from the Exchange Council to employ the services of experts, the employment has begun.

It was gathered that one Mr. Bola Adeeko has been employed as the Chief of Staff of the NSE, a newly created office. Although THISDAY did not get official details about him as at press time, NSE Spokesman, Mr. Wole Tokede confirmed Adeeko’s employment.

“Yes, Mr. Bola Adeeko has joined the NSE. He resumed last week. That is all the information I can give you now,” he said.

THISDAY checks revealed that Adeeko may have been recruited from JP Morgan Chase, New York,United States where he occupied the post of Vice President, Global Trade Sales.

THISDAY had exclusively reported that the approval given to Onyema by the Council of the Exchange to hire experts (mostly from outside the country) that would help drive the Exchange’s transformation agenda.

The CEO was said to have made a proposal to the Council to employ more hands that would facilitate the execution of the agenda of the new management.

A market source had explained that the new management was of the belief that most of the current senior officials of the Exchange do not have the capacity to drive the new products being planned for the market.

“They are talking of securities lending, index/exchange traded funds, options and financial futures among others. The CEO was able to convince the Council that for these products to become a reality, he needed to get experts who are specialists in each of the areas. And I can tell you that the Council has given its approval,” the source added.

The news of the employment of experts had sent jitters down the spine of many of the employees of the Exchange over their fate given the plan of the management.

Some of the employees who spoke to THISDAY under the condition of anonymity, had said that although the management was yet to formally tell them anything regarding the employment of fresh hands, they expressed the fear that their jobs were at risk.

“We have not been formally informed. But there is no smoke without fire. We are just hoping that the baby will not be thrown away with the bath water,” an employee said.

Speaking in the same vein, a senior stockbroker told THISDAY that the new management of NSE should tread cautiously in their efforts to transform the market.

“We know that the CEO and Executive Director have worked in foreign establishment. Also, their wealth of experience is not in doubt. But they should be guided by the fact the environment there are coming from is different from our own environment here. Whatever decision they are taking they should consider the local content side of it. For instance, if they bring all the experts from overseas, are they going to bring stockbrokers from abroad too? The management should come up with policies and strategies that will help to sustain the confidence reposed in them,” the broker said.

Unveiling his agenda recently, Onyema disclosed that the Exchange had been re-organised into four major divisions including : Market Operations and Technology; Business Development, Legal and Regulation, and Corporate.

“We believe that in order to position the Exchange to achieve its stated quantitative goals, its organisational structure must be changed to realign strategic business units accordingly, Onyema had said.

As much as I would love to attack BRF and blame him for this enormous disaster, I realize my arguments would rather be emotional rather than logical.
BRF is a man who seem to underestimate the vast challenge called "Lagos".
Lagos is the perfect microcosm of Nigeria at large, and BRF's work is a lot more difficult based on the fact that he rules about 10% of the nation; and if he could survive at this level, he could rule the giant of Africa called Nigeria.
With the countless challenges facing Lagos day to day: fixing this problematic state would take more than 10 BRF administrations. But Fashola can do more if we stop making him feel like he's done it all. He definitely is imperfect and I wonder why he is not learning from some glaring mistakes and keep repeating it. One thing for sure: He's got a very long way to go and should focus more on the most pressing projects of the state. I think he will do fine based on his sincerity.
