PoliticsRe: South -east To Produce President After Yar’adua-pdp by McKren(m): 5:55pm On Jul 08, 2009
This is a joke and an insult to the South East

In other to work through this just ask why we are zoning 2015 presidency when we don't know who will lead us in 2011.

in 2007 Yara'adua, Buhari, Bafrawa contested all from the same geopolitical zone and my sense is that they all got votes so how did the North West Unite behind Yar'adua, even in PDP primaries The Governors of Bauchi, Kaduna all contested against Yar'adua in the primaries. So what is the talk about a whole region uniting behind a candidate all about? Is that really possible in a democracy?

I think the only thing I sense Haliru or whatever his name is saying is that the whole South East should vote Yar'adua in 2011 in the hope that Yar'adua and PDP will back a South East candidate in 2015 at which time PDP would have been totally destroyed.

The idea that we are even being asked to condone a Yar'adua second term for whatever reason is patronising and insulting.

The South East should ensure Yar'adua is not voted in wholesale in 2011, even if he wins with votes from other zones so be it.
PoliticsRe: Lamido Sanusi: If Audit Reveals Some Bank Executive Have Been Cooking Their Book by McKren(m): 2:08pm On Jun 25, 2009
moneygurl:
But to help small business we need investors (local and foreign) and to bring investment we need transparency. The banks that are cashing in now and running up and down are the ones in trouble and have not open up about there margin loans. Every report you read about Nigeria banks (local and International) keep saying the same thing nobody know the true nature of this banks. He is not only helping foreign investors but shareholders which include Nigerians. Did you not see how a bubble was created with share price of this banks and how everything came falling down.

We need to know were these banks stand now to be able to help our economy which includes helping small business. China is not transparent but they have a good regulatory system. Here in Nigeria we do not have that when even the CBN does not have a clear picture of what are in the books of the banks.
No foreign Investor will invest in a country unless they see small Businesses already succeeding, so Government need to drive these small businesses first before it hand's off to free market. If you like post a Bank's books on the internet for all to see these Foreign Investors will still not come except we get some fundamentals right.

So the CBN should concentrate on making those things happen rather than grandstanding for the sake of it.
PoliticsRe: Lamido Sanusi: If Audit Reveals Some Bank Executive Have Been Cooking Their Book by McKren(m): 12:46pm On Jun 25, 2009
Me thinks all this noise about regulation, openness and transparency sounds good but should come after we have ensured that our banks are playing the roles they need to play in developing Small Businesses in Nigeria and by extension developing the economy.

These policies being pursued now by Sanusi no doubt is loved by Foreign Investors but how much it advances our National Economic Interest is not very clear. China is yet to have all the transparency as International Investors will love it.

I think Sanusi should concentrate on working out a framework for supporting small businesses to access loans responsibly probably through Government driven schemes so as to create jobs and grow the economy first.

We have a Banking system that is Isolated and is not part of a loop driving our business landscape to new heights. Sanusi may be practicing text book economics that works in countries with industrialized economies, we need a custom approach tailored to our challenges.
Our Banks will continue to be vulnerable so long as all they do is use people's money to engage in stock trading. If we do not diversify our manufacturing sector and all we export is oil, the naira will continue to be volatile, the stock market will continue to be volatile, our Banks will continue to be weak and no amount of risk management or stringent regulatory reforms will change this fact.

So I will advise Sanusi to chill, listen to Foreign Investors but know that they are looking after their own interest first. At this stage in our development process we still need Big Government programmes to catch up with the rest of the world and free market principles may not work at all times. When they work we adopt it where they dont we adopt measures that will help us grow.

Foreign AffairsRe: Obama And Netanyahu - Sense Of Entitlement Crushed. by McKren(m): 6:49pm On Jun 14, 2009
Obama should ignore this issue and tackle other problems

Just as it is wrong to bully Palestine to accept any peace deal, it is also wrong to bully Isreal to accept any peace deal

This people are not ready for peace

I just watched Bibi's speech, he has some genuine concern. But certain things he said wont also work.
The idea of a de-militarised Palestinian state don't make sense, however the experience Isreal had after pulling out of Gaza give's the argument some sense.

So I think other Presidents who ignore this issue to their last days in office may not be as stupid as Obama thinks they are.
The Isrealis and Palestinians are not ready for peace.

On Sunday, the eight-team Fifa Confederations Cup gets under way in South Africa when the host country take on Iraq in Johannesburg.

It is the eighth edition of a tournament that is still something of a mystery to many football fans around the globe.

So, what is the Confederations Cup? How did it start? And what do the home nations have to do if they want to get involved? Read BBC Sport's guide to Fifa's best-kept secret,

IN THE BEGINNING,
The competition began life in 1992 as the King Fahd Cup, the brainchild of the late Saudi Prince Faisal ibn Fahd.

The four-team tournament comprised Saudi Arabia, who were the 1988 Asian Cup winners, Argentina, the 1991 Copa America champions, 1991 Concacaf Gold Cup winners USA, and Ivory Coast, victors at the 1992 African Nations Cup.

CONFED CUP WINNERS (hosts)
1992: Argentina (Saudis)
1995: Denmark (Saudis)
1997: Brazil (Saudis)
1999: Mexico (Mexico)
2001: France (S Korea/Japan)
2003: France (France)
2005: Brazil (Germany)
Alfio Basile's Argentina triumphed, beating the Saudis 3-1 in the final in front of 75,000 fans thanks to goals from Leonardo Rodriguez, Claudio Caniggia and Diego Simeone.

The second edition also took place in Saudi Arabia in 1995, this time the hosts were joined by Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Nigeria and Denmark, who beat the 1992 champions 2-0 in the final.

It became known as the Confederations Cup in 1997 when Fifa took control of the competition. From then on it was staged every two years, with Brazil and France (twice each) and Mexico all triumphing.

From 2005, Fifa announced that the cup would be held every four years, one year before each finals tournament in the host country of the forthcoming World Cup.

Which means, with less than a year to go before the World Cup, it is the turn of South Africa.

WHAT'S THE POINT?
Having started as a relatively small-time affair between the winners of four continental cups, the Confederations Cup is now of paramount importance.

This year's tournament, as it did for Germany in 2005 and Japan and South Korea in 2001, gives South Africa the perfect opportunity to fine-tune its hosting skills ahead of putting on one of sport's greatest events next year.

The state of their stadia, transport links, ticket sales, marketing campaigns - you name it, if it is on the agenda for the World Cup, it is almost certainly being tried out this time around.

It's very important for Fifa and for the participating teams. I'm sure it'll be a great tournament

Fifa president Sepp Blatter
Even South Africa's notorious crime rate will be monitored to see what measures can be put in place before the entire footballing planet descends on the southernmost corner of the continent in 2010.

About £1.2m has been spent on marketing the so-called 'Festival of champions' to try and generate interest in the host country, with ticket sales relatively slow.

"The campaign is good," said Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke. "It would be a shame if we don't have full stadia. It is a unique chance, it is something special."

On Friday, two days before the start of the tournament, organisers revealed all but 1,000 tickets has been sold for the opening match and 453,218 of the 640,000 tickets, or 71%, had been snapped up for the entire competition.

World Cup organising chief Danny Jordaan added: "We feel confident we are going to deliver a hugely successful Confederations Cup."

Fifa will be watching on with interest, president Sepp Blatter casting his eye over proceedings to make sure the South Africans can produce in 2010.

"It's definitely time to kick off now, not only in terms of the organisation, but in terms of making sure they can deliver and will deliver," said Blatter. "This cup, one year before the big event, is crucial."

PoliticsRe: Fg Replies Sanusi: 7-point Agenda Stays by McKren(m): 7:19pm On Jun 08, 2009
I think we should give Sanusi a chance to settle in and see what his policies are, but to be honest in an organised society a new appointee either agrees with the previous policy in place or he is the face of reforms that the government who appointed him seeks. However with Sanusi non of the above is the case.

I wish him luck as I believe time will tell based on his record of achievements. I am optimistic he will deliver.

PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Tips Lamido Sanusi For CBN Governor by McKren(m): 12:32pm On May 23, 2009
President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has tipped his son-in-law, Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, as the next governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The current CBN governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, will complete his tenure in May, this year.

The presidency is said to be buzzing with lobbyists for Soludo's seat. But LEADERSHIP SUNDAY learnt that Yar'Adua is favourably disposed to anointing his son-in-law Yuguda as the next CBN chief.

Also, Tanimu Yakubu, currently the president's chief economic adviser, may be made chairman of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). Yakubu would still retain his current position, if he eventually becomes the PHCN boss. That becomes a combined honour for him.

A curious aspect, however, is that Rilwan Babalola, minister of power, who until his appointment as minister was Yakubu's special assistant, should have been chairman of PHCN, being the supervising minister.

Kola Adesina, who is a director with Sahara Oil and Gas Limited and a close friend of Yar'Adua's, has been appointed vice chairman of PHCN.

Yuguda is currently the arrow head of Yar'Adua's major economic think-tank - the advisory committee on the global economic meltdown.

Yuguda was a banker of note before going into politics. He was the MD/CEO of Inland Bank, substantially owned by Bauchi State. The bank eventually became First Inland Bank after consolidation. It is now known as Finbank. From there, he moved on to NAL Bank as the managing director also. During Obasanjo's first term, Yuguda was the minister of aviation.

He became governor of Bauchi State in 2007, after a bitter political battle between him and the former governor of the state, Ahmed Muazu. Bauchi was hailed as one of the few places where the 2007 election was viewed as transparent; consequently, Yuguda triumphed over the PDP and formed an ANPP government. This was seen as a feat, considering that the PDP machinery was a formidable force to overcome in many parts of the country.

Since he became governor, Yuguda has been enmeshed in a battle of wits with his predecessor. He recently married the president's daughter in a move that, many believe, was intended to checkmate his opponents. Plans are already under way for him to join the ruling PDP. In a recent interview, he said that he was only forced to leave the PDP by the party's former helmsman, Ahmadu Ali, and other gladiators. Currently, Yuguda is dealing with the religious crisis that rocked Bauchi last week. He has since blamed his political opponents for the crisis.

PoliticsRe: Why Is Obama Visiting Ghana Before Nigeria? by McKren(m): 10:24pm On May 17, 2009
Look there is no point being in denial

You can argue all you like about the significance of this occassion

but a "NEW WORLD ORDER" is emerging

Why not wonder why he visited TURKEY recently .  . . . . .  they are a Secular country with muslim majority

also watchout for countries like Jordan where the civilised King Abdullah holds forth.

Egypt is also very necessary in breaking the Isreali Palestinian deadlock.

In West Africa . . . . . . the Obama administration has described Ghana as their most trusted allies in the region, bear in mind this is coming after the Yar'adua administration made frantic efforts for Yar'adua to visit President Obama in White house, instead he personally goes first to Ghana in our backyard. . . . we have handed over our leadership of West Africa to Ghana . . . . . and yes South Africa will be next black African visit.

Watch out for his speech in Ghana, he will call the next generation of leadership through democratic means to emerge across Africa, and no where else is it better to call for such than a nation that has succeeded where its neighbours failed.

And yes the US will mantain some kind of ties with Nigeria because of oil, but bear in mind President Obama is pushing for electric cars and alternative energy sources in a bid to make oil less relevant.

So our importance in commity of Nations will continue to dwindle unless we change course and get more serious.

I have always argued that the reason her job at NAFDAC was so straightfoward was because fake drug dealers neither had political clouts nor could spin anything against the NAFDAC boss.
