Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors are feeling uneasy with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman.

The amended BOT rules in the party’s constitution give the Chairman the power to supervise PDP Governors and sanction those adjudged as not performing.

Obasanjo is also the Life Leader of the party, unlike Tony Anenih, Solomon Lar, and Alex Ekwueme who were BOT Chairmen before him.

His new status was conceived long before the PDP commenced its electioneering campaign in February.

Party sources in Abuja said the arrangement was contrived to give Obasanjo in retirement such powers as would compensate him for the failure of the plot to extend his tenure as President.

It was learnt that former PDP Governors, while in office, consented to the amendment in the BOT rules because it was the other condition – apart from supporting Umar Yar’Adua’s Presidential candidature – the party leadership gave to shield them from probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This was the party hierarchy’s strategy of confining to the past things that happened in the past.

The reasoning being that the prosecution of so many former Governors in the PDP would give the party away as one in dire need of moral rearmament.

Serving Governors are concerned that the Federal Government would exercise such absolute control over federating units as though Nigeria were a unitary state.

They are altogether perplexed that so much power could be concentrated in a President that had negotiated his exit from office.

They contend also that even where the party, through its National Executive Committee (NEC) – and not the BOT – has the prerogative of monitoring activities of Governors and other party members in public office, the constitutional rights to sanction Governors should be exercised by state Assemblies.

Governors, especially those from the Niger Delta, are determined to raise this issue at the next NEC meeting.

"Our leader … Obasanjo will remain with us on the BOT and will be guiding the hands of the new candidate and all the Governors because the new BOT empowers him to question any Governor that does not perform. What happened has happened in the past. Let us march forward", Ali had said before the swearing-in of the new Governors.

The Governors had scoffed at the idea when Ali first announced it.

They believe that Yar’Adua would be self-respecting and not allow elements outside the government to perform such an important function.

Some openly argue that the North, whose lawmakers deflected Obasanjo’s third term goal, would never consent to the arrangement.

But there has been a recent rapprochement that has seen Obasanjo regain favour with Yar’Adua, Ali, and others, at a time some party leaders had hoped Anenih would continue as BOT Chairman
Call it coup or whatever
This country can not dwindle back to the days of politics of scratch my back I scratch yours.

Yaradua should grow up.

I beg to disagree, if Andy Uba made his 1trillion Naira through illegitimate means and Yaradua made his 769million through illegitimate means they are both criminals. There is nothing like small or big fraud nor small or big embezzlement in the constitution of our country.

People should stop eulogising politicians merely because they declared assets, the rapid change between his present figures and the one he declared in 1999 demands some explanation in a country where commensurate economic growth was not recorded between this time.
So may be those who accuse him of giving most State Government contracts to family owned bussinesses are not wrong afterall.

At the rate we eulogise people for merely declaring their loot, if before seeking 2nd term in office Yaradua declares 10 trillion Naira we will still eulogise him for declaring.
Foreign AffairsRe: Bye Bye Tony Blair by McKren(m): 6:39pm On Jun 28, 2007
Only ignorant Britons on the streets of Britain wil have unkind words for Tony Blair.

The British Foreign policy whether Labour or Conservative has always been the same and will always be the same. The Brits dont agree with the French, they have a long and cold History with the Germans and thus no love lost between them, they dont even trust countries like Italy, Spain or Portugal, it is even no use talking about Rusia as that is a no go area.

There natural allies have always been and will remain US no matter who occupies Washington. Those hoping to see a detached UK from US will die waiting cos it is not going to happen any time soon.

That being said, it is only an oversatisfied or overfed public that has time to querry if their leader is being nice on the foreign front. Domestic politics is miles apart from International politics. In international politics the priority is National Interest, Blair whether right or wrong went into Iraq believing he was doing the best for his country.
Though he was unfortunate not to get the same amount of loyalty from Bush like he gave him. Even Bush testified that Blair was too sincere for the political circles they operate in.
And that is a fact, Blair pursued debt relief for Africa with so much dedication when other world leaders were simply uninterested or will never deliver there promise.

On the local front, those who are in the know will tell you that 1997 Britain before Blair met it still experienced power cuts, some old people who had no money to buy energy freeze inside their homes, school pupils had poor study conditions with students still having to deficate in pitholes. Today all those are history that is why they have enough time to Judge Blairs Government solely on the war in Iraq.

1997 Britain was so acient,  he left a modern Britain with a strong economy, beautiful cities and great transport system. Like Angel 101 pointed out, a fact which led him to being confident enough to carry his own travel bag to join the train system he offered his people (that is an act of a sincere leader).

In his words He met Britain with so much hopes, he is living Britain with even higher hopes.

Thank God, our new president is intelligent, a listener, honest and understands the role of a true learder.

Mr. McKren:
The wuruwuru, magomago, rushrush, pafpaf, and short cuts ERA is dead.
The Nigerian problems will be studied profoundly and a clear and effective final decision will be made at the right time.

Nigeria belongs to all of us, we all have our rights, we are all equal and no more dancing behind a fake messiah.

Problems in Nigeria will be resolved collectively as a group. There is no more one man show in town.

Failure is behind us and perfection is what we crave!

Nigerian president is here, it's time for business

One love
I will come back to debate this issue when the cabinet list has been released and when the electoral tribunal is over. After then we will know Yaradua's tru colour.

Now you are standing up for what is right at all time by suggesting that all those who looted should be set free and yet celebrating every now and then that Ehindero is in the duck.

I have told you before, you lack the moral right to lecture Ribadu on ethics.

You simply have no clue what right and wrong is, no matter how you disguise your love for Nigeria you true intentions shows by every word you type.

He's responsible for the crisis in Oyo state, Anambra and he has created the delay and the reason why none of these governors has been arrested
That sums up how misguided your argument is and your desperate attempt to blackmail Ribadu at all cost.

Ribadu did not play any role in the impeachment of Ladoja and Peter Obi.

If anything he thought Adebibu and Alao Akala were not fit to be leaders.

I hope u're right.

@BigB1 & McKren
I beg to disagree with u. while i agree that Ribadu was selective in dealing with corruption, i believe he did the job to best of his ability. Abi u go do pass wetin your master send u? he was acting on instructions and could not do otherwise. EFCC was not an independent body. shikena!
Very reasonable comment.
EFCC was not independent agreed, not because Ribadu did not want to be independent but because Presidency had every right to fire the EFCC boss without explanation. That is the unfortunate nature of the act setting up EFCC. While I do agree that EFCC was not independent the talk of selectivity does not hold water with me.
Because Ribadu went against Tafa Balogun against the wishes of OBJ. And a lot of politicians considered friends of OBJ. When EFCC indicts any they will tell you the politician in question picked up a quarell with the President the previous night that was why EFCC went after him. Politicians indulging in all sorts of pettiness to justify their impunity.
Where else in the world will a public officer justify his being corrupt because the other person is coorupt except in Nigeria. That is BigB1's idea of perfect Nigeria or perfect strategy.

Ken Nnamani attempted to make EFCC independent by making it necessary to require 2/3 majority of both house of assembly to remove the EFCC boss, why did the House of Representatives not ratify ithuh? Why did they not help make EFCC independent if they mean well for Nigeriahuh

Now we have our EFCC learning to do cash-for-freedom bargain. That is BigB1's and Mr. Listening President's new idea of fighting corruption effectively.

The new Governors should simply loot as much as they can so that they will have enough money to negotiate cash-for-freedom deal.

What is going on in Oyo State is a National disgrace.

Alao Akala will himself lead a convoy of thugs wielding cutlasses to intimidate people on election day instead of canvassing for votes

The same Akala will send thugs against Striking Workers to bully them back to work

The only place I have heard of this kind of Governance in most recent times is in Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe.

I feel so ashamed and this is a National disgrace.

BigB1

You know that am obviously not running away from you, when you have a leader doing your wish in his desperate search for acceptance. All your claims will easily be confused as right.
Defending Ribadu is what I love to do, and I will always do it. In fact whenever I have the honour to tell my kids about "Heros of Nigeria" who tried to make a difference. Ribadu will be part of that list.

But trying to convince you (BigB1) to appreciate Ribadu, is an excersice in futility. And I am not going to attempt it. It is obvious that the Children of Alams, Tafa Balogun, and all those Ribadu brought down will simply not have kind words for him. I do understand that because I don't know if I will have kind words for him if I am one.

However, what needs to be done needs to be done.
I don't know what you mean by Ribadu undermining the Anti-Corruption War, I have always asked you to produce one Innocent person Ribadu has prosecuted and till date you have not.
Please don't bore me with talks of Selectivity, Ribadu is a professional and it is not his duty to keep inventory of those you consider friends or enemies of President. Those he was able to establish facts againts he prosecuted, those he was not able to he is still investigating. If there is any person you think is corrupt and should be prosecuted, it is your duty as a patriotic Nigerian  to furnish the EFCC and the Police with any dosiers you have on that person or remain silent. Ribadu is not going to prosecute anybody he has not been able to establish cases against merely because there is an unsubstantiated public perception that the person is corrupt. Courts don't do public opinnion or logic, they do facts.
No one in the history of this Nation has fought corruption the way Ribadu did, if Yaradua decides to demobilise EFCC I wish him luck. But then Ribadu will hold his head up high knowing he gave it his best shut.

But like I always tell you, you might just be celebrating too early. It is only 1 month into Yaradua's Government and I wont like to speculate on his policy direction. I am waiting for his official Cabinet list, then we will know if his loyalty is to Nigeria or the hawks.

I am very sure that for the simple fact that I am a practicing christian I cannot be accused of siding with the muslims so the issue of religous sentiments don't hold water.
It does hold water because I think you are arguing along this lines because you are a christain and want to be seen as someone who speaks the truth regardless of religous linings. But I think you are trying too hard.

Palestine is not Iraq, I share your views in Iraq but not palestine.

This is exactly why sometimes I accuse of political correctness.

My position remains that any bad or wrong action must be acknowledged regardless of the person, group or nation responsible.
Well you are arguing along the lines of ethical do's and don'ts. But unfortunately that is not the case here. The issue here is a Nations right to protecting its security and territorial integrity in the face of war. The dos and donts of ethics apply in the Ideal world when all things are equal not at the middle of a war.
Palestineans voted a terrorist organisations whose most significant election manifesto is to wage a war against Isreal, in essence they voted for war. They are simply facing the consequesnces of war. There is no need for Propaganda.

Dokubo-Asari demands for N137m - Says no disarmament until the money is paid
Soji Ajibola, Yenagoa - 26.06.2007

LEADER of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, on Monday asked for the refund of N137 million being the amount he said he used to procure the arms he surrendered to the Rivers State government.

Addressing newsmen during his visit to Bayelsa State, Dokubo-Asari disclosed that Rivers State government still owed him N137 million, adding that the government should not talk about disarmament until the debt was settled.

Dokubo-Asari stated that the militant groups were ready to surrender various arms in their possession, but that the government must be ready to fulfil its own part of the bargain.

According to him, “we bought the arms, we did not pick it. If they are ready to pay, we are ready to surrender all the arms in our possession.”

On hostage-taking and other related crimes in the region, the leader of the NDPVF promised that these would be stopped, just as he warned both the government and affected oil companies against paying for the release of oil workers held hostage.

Blaming both the government and affected oil companies for encouraging the act which, according to him, was criminal, Dokubo-Asari said that since he was released on bail by the Federal High Court, Abuja, he had been consulting with various militant groups in the region and making them see reason why the act must be stopped.

“Hostage-taking is not part of our struggle. Ijaw people are not known for criminal acts as we hardly involve ourselves in criminal activities. In Ijaw land, prior to this period, both the strangers and indigenes co-habited peacefully, but now, the reverse is the case.

“Today, both local and foreign investors are running away from the region. I am going to meet with those that are aggrieved with our proposal; this evil called hostage-taking must stop. We must protect Bayelsa. This is the only state we can call our own,” he said.

He called on the leaders of the Ijaw nation to stand up for the liberation of the region.

On his view on the corruption allegation levelled against the erstwhile governor of the state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, he said those who did more than him were walking unmolested and wondered why he was still being detained.

According to him, “Alamieyeseigha remains the only governor still being held captive while others are now freemen. What manner of selective justice is this? Alamieyeseigha’s ordeal is an Ijaw cause, an injury to one is an injury to all. Ijaw people are now carrying the burden and disgrace that Alamieyeseigha stole money. We allowed him to be disgraced. We will not allow the situation to repeat itself.”

He called on the people to rally round the present administration in the country, adding, “a majority of Ijaw people believe in Goodluck and as a result, we will rally round him to succeed.”

Receiving the leader of NDPVF, the governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, thanked the Federal Government for its support, describing his release as a relief to the Ijaw people.
Stop Hostage taking for ransome, but Fedral Government you must first pay me my ransome for my amunition.

Mariory:
I believe the answer to that question is the subsidy. If the subsidy were completely removed, then you would see true market fluctuation in the price. I could be wrong about this though.
Yes there will be fluctuations due to market forces but that will be after an exponential hike. because the cost of logistics, foreign labour and production costs, import duty, tarrifs and all sorts of costs will be born by the consumer.

The only way we can guarantee lower price as a result of market forces is if we produce petrol locally. That should be our priority right now, local production.

When local production is achieved we can now talk of 100% removal of subsidy.
