Lets not get carried away
all President Yaradua can do is to keep Nigeria on track on the path to greatness
no one President can solve all of a Nations problems

Blair after 10years as PM claimed he met a country with hope and is leaving the country with greater hopes

Obasanjo claimed he met a failing Nigeria and left Nigeria with hope

Even Bill clinton did not solve all of America's problem and may be God knows Bush will leave a hopeless America than he met it.

Following his alleged implication in the N21 million scam, the presidency has reportedly restricted the movement of the former Inspector – General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, within Abuja. P.M.News gathered that apart from seizing his passport, the government has put on hold his job in the United Nations Civil Police.

Police sources at the Louis Edet Headquarters of the force in Abuja revealed that over N300 million was taken out of the police budget department by Ehindero and his associates in his last days in office.

The report of an investigation committee set up by the police hierarchy to investigate Ehindero reportedly indicted Ehindero as the owner of the N21 million recovered from Mr. John Obaniyi, the police commissioner in charge of budget.

President Umar Yar’Adua, P.M.News gathered, had, on receiving the preliminary report of investigation of the scam, ordered Ehindero’s arrest, pending final investigations.

Meanwhile, the embattled former police boss has told the investigation panel on the allegation of financial impropriety levelled against him that the commissioner of police, in-charge of Budget, Mr. John Obaniyi, lied about the N21 million found at the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

P.M.News gathered from a police source that Obaniyi was directed to release the money and since it was an accumulated allowances of policemen who went on foreign mission election duties, the voucher was issued to him to pay the cops but he never knew that he (Obaniyi) was waiting for him to take his leave as Inspector–General of police before he could move the money.

P.M.News further learnt that Ehindero, told the panel that it was a set up to implicate him by those who did not see anything good in him.

He, however, said that if truly he had wanted to perpetrate any fraud he could as well done it neatly when he was the Inspector–General of Police (IG).
The bit in bold sounds like the same argument I heard from Mamajama a couple of days ago, how Ehindero himself is also making the same asertion is funny.

Truly most of what Mamajama says here is like a preface to Ehindero's doings.

I urge mamajama to at this time stay of this forum or any other forum as he could be making life more difficult for his dad.

Honestly its good Asari is released, I believe MEND will be better managed with Asari in the field than Asari in Prison.

Because while Asari has never in record been associated with any petty crimes like stealing or pickpocket, the same can not be said of the likes of Ateke, Soboma George or Prince Igodo. He has formal upbringing and could adhere to some fundamentals as different from others who were ex-criminals. Asari on his part is a Natural rebel but surely not a hoodlum.

Though I doubt if he might command that much respect like he used to have having been in solitary confinement for 2yrs, in fact his relevance at the moment will depend on his loyalty to his lieutenants like Jomo Gbomo.

But what Nigerians should expect now especially those in Niger-Delta, is fierce gang war (ecumenism of some sort) where MEND will try to bully other splinter groups to declare loyalty to them or face attack. When this is achieved, MEND might now have a credible front to negotiate with the Government.

The Asari I heard speaking on BBC Network Africa is likely to change his strategy and do more dialogues with Government (though he is Naturally soft spoken), however whatever strategy he adopts will only make sense when he has all the militants under his command once again.

@Uwazurike
Those calling for the Igbos to launch a campaign for Uwazurike must understand the reservations of Ohaneze Ndigbo and South Eastern governors. As much as the underlying issues that led MASSOB are similar to those of MEND, our society will simply refuse to percieve them in the same manner. As a matter of fact if Uwazurike does the amount of havoc Asari and his MEND are doing he will simply face firing squad.
Do not expect anybody to campaign for Uwazurike, all those concerned about him can do right now is pray that he is given the same treatment as Asari and Ganiyu Adams.

Tlops, it is too late to prevent this scenario i.e. stagerred swearing in of Governors in 2011, even if the tribunal is given a time constriaint now because a 4 years tenure that begins anytime from now will end at the earliest 15th June 2011. Also, it is unlikely all tribunals will reach judgements the same day and all affected states swear in the new governors on the same day, so it is inevitable that they will be staggered. I don't think it is a bad thing though.
My brothers staggered elections and swearing in is a welcomed development. It will encourage grass-root politics not the current scenario where someone sits in Abuja and pontificates who governs and who wont.

The will of the people in our politics is about to be restored.

EFCC insists on trial of ex-governors
By Musikilu Mojeed, Abuja
Published: Thursday, 14 Jun 2007
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Monday, insisted that it would prosecute former governors who looted state funds.

The commission said it might not accept the ex-governors’ request for plea bargaining.

Plea bargaining is a negotiation in which an accused person agrees to plead “guilty” or “no contest” in return for the reduction of the charges or dismissal of some of the charges against him or her.

In some situations, an element of the bargain may recommend that the accused reveal some information on the location of stolen goods or give information about fellow accused person(s) in the crime or pledge to testify against the accused.

A top official of the EFCC told our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday that the commission had realised that it “lacked the power for plea bargaining.”

The official said, “We have reconsidered our position and the former governors may not enjoy the kind of reprieve they expected. The power for plea bargaining belongs to the courts. We don’t have such a power.”

The commission had last week given some former governors the option of returning their loot, or risk being prosecuted.

In the past one week, it had quizzed Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers); Chief Lucky Igbinedion (Edo); Chief James Ibori (Delta); Mr. Jolly Nyame (Taraba); and Alhaji Ahmed Sani (Zamfara) over alleged mismanagement of public funds and money laundering.

Others are Chief Uzor Orji Kalu (Abia); Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (Lagos); Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu); and Chief Joshua Dariye (Plateau).

Alhaji Saminu Turaki (Jigawa); Mr. Boni Haruna (Adamawa); and Chief George Akume (Benue), who were also summoned by the anti-graft agency, are yet to honour the invitation.

Our source said that apart from the fact that the EFCC lacked the power for plea bargaining, its chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, was resolute in prosecuting the erstwhile governors no matter the pressure.

He also said the anti-graft agency had to make a U-turn following admonitions by well-meaning Nigerians that the earlier decision not to prosecute indicted former governors might set a bad precedent.

The official said, “We toyed with that idea (plea bargaining), but have changed our mind. We are not going to do that any longer. So, once investigation is completed, we will charge them to court.

“But we encourage them to return their loot all the same. If they do that, they may get forgiveness from God. By doing that, they will be helping their conscience as they will be moving from a blemished conscience to a good one.

“If they like to plead guilty before the court, that is their business. No more deals with them.”

Another source in the commission said that the loot-for-freedom offer was part of the investigative technique of the EFCC.

He said the commission made the offer as a bait for those who had fled the country to return home.

”We have succeeded in getting what we wanted to achieve. The offer is what encouraged Nnamani and Dariye to return home. Now that we have them in the bag, we will prosecute them,” he said.

The official said that operatives of the EFCC would start visiting the states next week to verify projects that some of the governors claimed to have executed during their tenure.

Before travelling to London on Wednesday, Ribadu reportedly instructed the commission’s Director of Operations, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, to intensify work on the investigation of the former governors.

Ribadu, who will attend a meeting in Norway before returning to the country, was also said to have advised Lamorde to seek the assistance of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the Nigerian Society of Engineers in the investigation of some projects that required technical input.

The official added that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar would be questioned again on his management of the finances of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.

Abubakar is expected back in the country on Thursday.

The official said all the interrogated former governors were released on bail after they surrendered their passports as proof that they would not flee the country.

He said, ”All of them (former governors) who came here were released on bail. And the bail was not based on personal recognition.

“I can confirm to you that because of the gravity of the matter involved, the bail conditions were stiff.

“One of the conditions was that they had to surrender their diplomatic and Nigerian passports.

“Now that we have their travelling documents in our custody, we are sure that they won‘t run away. We believe that as law-abiding citizens, they will honour the EFCC‘s invitation whenever we ask them to report to our office
http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200706142212129

Do not be suprised to see video conversation between these men and EFCC in court.
This is just a ploy to corroborate their allegations.

I'm bit confused here. So governorship election will hold in anambra in 2010, 2014, 2018, x+4?

Anambra is quite customized.

Well, the supreme court ruling stands. More strength to our democracy.
Which is a good thing as INEC will dedicate all of its resources on that day to conduct free and fair election as against the 1/36 of Efficiency that can be dedicated to each state under the present setting. Even police will concentrate on the State to ensure the people's vote count.

Our elections should be staggered. That will be the most important electoral reform we need.

PoliticsRe: Andy Uba Out Till 2010 by McKren(m): 4:10pm On Jun 14, 2007
In a landmark judgement this afternoon, the Supreme Court ruled that former governor Peter Obi of Anambra State should go back to the Government House as governor of the state till March 17, 2010. The court also ordered that the incumbent Governor, Cheif Andy Uba, should vacate office as he ceases to be governor as from today. In the lead judgement, Justice Katsina Alu said INEC erred in law by conducting election in Anambra State when Peter Obi has not served his four-year term.

The court ruled that the four year tenure of Obi commenced from the day he was sworn in and will terminate on 17 March 2010.

All the six justices of the apex agreed with the lead judgement. They all agreed that a governor should only vacate office four years from the day of assuming office.

They said Obi had not served the constitutionally stipulated four years in office. The Supreme Court justices said a fuller explanations of the judgement will be given on 13 July, 2007.

Obi was not in court but his deputy Dame Virginia Etiaba was in court.

As at the time of filing this report, there was jubilation in Abuja by supporters of Obi in court.

In the second case involving former Governor Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo State who also sought an extension of his tenure, due to his impeachment, the apex court referred the matter to the high court for adjudication.
