Ammishaddai: [s][/s] Oga shut the hell up!!! What do you know about a family...? So because he's out of a job his wife and the innocent children should starve abi...? Nonsense. Instead you telling him to get his lazy ass up to scrap around and hustle like a man, you're encouraging him to fold his hands here on Nairaland by looking for sympathy from people of his calibre . Nonsense. Later you'll say you're a man . Tueh !!! Who is this stupid man spewing nonsense on an issue he knew next to nothing about? I am very sure you have never been married, or a neophyte in marital life who has never face any trying time, or who has a source of illicit funds to rely on to keep a needy wife. It is better you shut up if you have no good advice to contribute on any serious issue. |

blackslayer: General question! I already forgot about Nigeria having any future so i've not been following anything going on there. Are things really bad in Nigeria at the moment? Exceptionally bad? So why are the citizens not marching and demanding a better country? March and be killed. That's the reason. #Endsars2020. |

Tinyemeka: I'd beg to disagree on that.
Those banks have their Investment Banking divisions that provide services relating to advisory, due diligence, M&A, etc.
JP Morgan has a Private Equity holding (JP Morgan Partners LLC) not VC.
Modus operandi of VCs and PEs are quite different.
PE firms provide funding with a view to gaining majority control of an existing or mature firm. Firms that are well past their growth phase.
VCs on the other hand are not primarily interested in having majority control, but would rather provide funding to have a stake in early-stage startups that have a high potential for strong growth and performance. Those are the kind of partners OP should be looking for.
Banks and PE firms would rather be interested in investing in an already running company (usually one they deem to be under-performing and under-estimated, take control of the company's management and operations, turn it around for the better and then sell it off - exit the investment per se - when the fortunes of the acquired company have improved). https://www.reuters.com/article/jp-morgan-moves-venture-capital-idUSL2N27L0AR |

Tinyemeka: VC firms are not banks. And the OP did not approach a VC firm. JP Morgan, and other Investment Banks, have venture capital division. |

einsteine: Banks don't provide loans to start ups.
Stop saying what you don't know.
VC firms are the ones who provide funding for startups.
Banks only provide growth capital after you have proven viability and even so, most banks are collaterized or based on particular projects cashflow. Have you ever heard of venture capitals firms set up across the globe, which are another form banking and financial credit source. Their major focus for credit provision are technological start ups. |

Shokoloko: I have pulled out how the four entities you quoted started. Please take some time to read it as none were started with bank loans. Thanks Nobody ever starts any business with a bank loan. You start with your own little contribution, and thereafter to boost it, you seek for bank credit. But as long as you are still managing your business with your little fund, you are a start up. |

Shokoloko: In 1975, the 20-year-old Jobs and Wozniak set up shop in Jobs' parents' garage, dubbed the venture Apple, and began working on the prototype of the Apple I. To generate the $1,350 in capital they used to start Apple, Steve Jobs sold his Volkswagen microbus, and Steve Wozniak sold his Hewlett-Packard calculator
Did Bill Gates borrow money to start Microsoft? Gates reportedly called MITS (the maker of the Altair 8800) from his dorm room and offered to create software for it. MITS readily accepted and both Gates and Allen set to work. By 1975, the pair sold the software (as the programming language "BASIC" to MITS for $3,000 plus royalties
Where did Larry Page get money for Google? In order to further their search engine, Page and Brin raised about $1 million in outside financing from investors, family, and friends. They called their expanded search engine Google—a name derived from a misspelling of the word googol (a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros).
Did Jeff Bezos start with a loan? Amazon.com: Founder Jeff Bezos got a $100,000 investment from his parents to start the famous online store.
Even foreign banks will want to see some small scale success.
You can see that the four entities you quoted were not funded with bank loans So in your own view it is those little funds they contributed to their inspiration that make them the big technology giants they are today. Why don't you dig deeper and reel out their debt profiles with banks before they become the cash cows they now are. There are always a beginning for any business, and in a sane climate, banks are always willing to help any customer with a good business plan. |
Career › Re: My Experience Visiting A Bank For Loan As An Entrepreneur by membranus: 10:39am On Sep 14, 2021 |
Shokoloko: Because banks do not have any money of their own. They hold other people's money you can only access a loan after you have succeeded in the business on a small scale. I personally do not consent that the bank use my money to fund start ups or ideas. In fact there is no bank shareholder will consent to that This a very myopic opinion. If the foreign banks have been doing this to their customers, do you think we would have seen the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon on the world stage. This set of companies were also start ups at their initial stage who benefitted from their banks assistance, at which the banks are also benefitting immensely from their patronage. Nigerian banks are generally risk averse, that is why they will continue to remain local champions, ripping off innocent customers with illegal charges. |

The problem is that most banks have sent their long serving, and therefore widely experienced and competent staffs home, under the guise of cutting cost and improving profitability.
Their present crops of staff are mostly newbies, with little or no knowledge or experience about loan and credit processing. Moreover they have less passion for the job because they know that their bank managements can also dispense with their service at will, in the same manner they treated their former senior colleagues. |

Obi can only deceive gullible followers/ IPoB like una Nigerian Doctors and Lecturers are always going on strike under any government, therefore you cannot use that to judge Obi. Obi is far above the grades in governance achievements than your dear president Buhari. Are Doctors not on strike now running into months under your president? |
